goodnight

I saw Silverchair in concert during Edgefest 1999 in Saskatoon (Canada). They were often listed but basically never played Saskatoon.
Quick aside - Edgefest was a Canadian 90s travelling concert tour with a bunch of great bands (Hole, Finger Eleven, Green Day, Foo, etc)
Anyways I wasn't expecting them but they came on stage and everyone went nuts. They played a few songs and then shouted out how much they loved playing Calgary. It was hilarious - I don't know if he was wasted or what but that was their next stop. I like to think someone just tricked them into playing Saskatoon.
Another quick aside - Hole closed that concert and Courtney Love showed everyone her tits. Peak 90s experience
breeezyc@reddit
Edgefest ‘99 Winnipeg concert-goer. Holy shit that was a great time. Also saw Courtney’s tits

How's this - after driving from Melbourne over Nullarbor (with boyfriend in EH Holden our dogs & surfboards lol ) saw Silverchair play & share stage few songs with ... THE F***ING CULT at a BIg day out in FREO WA ! * Fun fact - Dogs were for real allowed to BDO ! I rang before buying tix (we were living out car) Woofies got mega attention all day & night, water food bought for them , I was ushered up front for few big bands and dog was cared for , I was showered with hugs drugs , drinks water & food . Folk were über respectful giving dogs " room" but making sure we were included 😂 Silverchair went on tour with Red hot chilli's after that BDo. Not bad for few Newcastle teens

Unbelievable just how utterly hard that song rocked

Sigh.
I have nothing else to say.

First tape I ever bought. Camelot records. Cost me 13.99, but so worth it.
29stumpjumper@reddit
They were only 15 years old when that album released. It was so good. I still listen to the entire thing regularly.
dystopika@reddit
I remember that was the big deal with them, they were so young -- they actually formed their band when they were 12. Daniel Johns is 45 now.
gravesisme@reddit
I vividly remember people calling the lead singer Curt Kobain reborn, which I never really understood, aside from them both having long blonde hair I guess?
Acrobatic_Ad7061@reddit
I remember reading Courtney Love said that he looked like her late husband.
pilierdroit@reddit
…and sounds like Eddie Vedder - how lame” was her entire quote - on stage at the Big day out in Sydney.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
TIL I'm older than Silverchair. I didn't know I'd got started on failure that early. 😅
RainaElf@reddit
I remember I dropped to my knees when I first heard that. seems like on VH-1, maybe? the album hadn't been out long. my knees have been out ever since. 🤣
CapitalElk1169@reddit
Absolutely nuts they put this together at that age.
spinereader81@reddit
Had the album, had the poster, had the crush on Daniel Johns.
thecicilala@reddit
I loved this album so as a 15 year old.
SoloMotorcycleRider@reddit
"Pure Massacre" is the best song on the album.

Thank you for this. I had all but forgotten about them. Listening to it right now and man, the memories!
Hootinger@reddit
I remember being at Meijer, and they had the headphones setup where you could listen to a sample of albums. I selected Frogstomp, but didnt realize the headphone audio was allll the way up. I still remember that pain.
tourniquet2099@reddit
I had the tshirt in high school, mainly because I liked the image and 2 songs off the album. Lol

After freak show the band nosedived. One of the greatest bands in the 90s and even more impressive they were basically kids.

erinrachelcat@reddit
At least one of them had an eating disorder, right?
Genericname187329465@reddit
Yes, Daniel Johns, the singer/guitarist had anorexia. He was vegan and also read he developed a fear that the food he was eating would hurt when he swallowed. I believe it ended up with him developing reactive arthritis because of it and missed out touring for Diorama because of it.
Traditional_Nebula96@reddit
Awww ❤️ 🕊️ I remember that. Rest easy, Daniel Johns
Disco_Lando@reddit
He’s still alive
Disco_Lando@reddit
Diorama was a solid album too

Love all these comments what a treat. This was my most favorite band in the whole world, god I loved them so much. Got to see them back in 2007 for the last time, twice that year in NYC. They are such a rock band those shows and all the ones I went to before were just so awesome.
Daniel Johns has made newer pop type music and it may not be everyone's cup of tea but that guy can write a song!
hot_rod_kimble@reddit
Lately I'm a separate believer But I'm walking in straight line
LeftHandedGuitarist@reddit
They went out on a high, their later albums were incredible.
_undercover_brotha@reddit
Same age as them when this released. Fucking incredible album.
greatdaytogetgas@reddit
For my entire life I thought this album was called Frogstone. Wow. This changes everything
ptatersptate@reddit (OP)
I can see why! I’ve never noticed that before.
JeremyDavidLewis79@reddit
I really miss the weird photography and cinematography of early to mid 90's album art and music videos!
jakeordie@reddit
Saw these guys play the centre court of a shopping mall promoting the album. Three little kids with Marshall stacks.....I still remember the look on the grown-ups faces when the beat dropped
_shut-up-nerd_@reddit
30 years in the rotation and I'm still not tired of it. Shade is one of the greatest tracks ever recorded.

panteragstk@reddit
I listened to it a few weeks ago and had forgotten how damn good it was.
Listened to Freak Show right after. Good, but not as good.
RocktoberBlood@reddit
Their second album was bleh. I couldn't do it. It felt so corporate.
Kinda like Bush, their first album was great, and then Gavin's ego exploded and everything was trash after that.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
Both really great albums but I agree. Then there was Neon Ballroom..
well_hung_over@reddit
Never heard of it, I assume you’re mistaken…
TransportationOk657@reddit
I still listen to this album regularly. It still blows my mind knowing that they were about 16 when they recorded this album.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
Yep, it's absolutely wild, debut album at mid teens and it was an absolute monster.
TransportationOk657@reddit
They sounded so polished, instruments and vocals. It's too bad they couldn't recapture that magic with their follow-up albums. It's been years since I've listened to it, but I was really excited for Freak Show. However, I remember being disappointed and not really liking it. I might just have to give it another chance.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
I think Freak Show is still pretty solid, just not to Frogstomped level. Then there was Neon Ballroom....
Bay-Area-Tanners@reddit
I really like Neon Ballroom. It’s different than their first two albums but still good.
Genericname187329465@reddit
I agree. It was a new direction for sure but they developed more musically with Neon Ballroom and really hit the peak with Diorama. His vocal range was amazing and I remember that they specifically made note that they weren't using auto tune on that album.
AmorFatiBarbie@reddit
Across the night is still a classic.

Traditional_Nebula96@reddit
Soooooo good
GustavSnapper@reddit
I feel bad for these guys looking back on this, especially as an Aussie. It was a weird time for a bunch of high school kids to release a genuine world wide best seller. Then they got caught up being dragged through the mud as satanists in our very conservative media and it was just kinda shit for them with all the popularity.
Crazy they peaked on their first album too, an impossibly difficult album to follow up.
ARWren85@reddit
That makes sense, I grew up in Kansas and got grounded for buying their c.d. At Borders. I didn't understand why my when it was convenient "evangelical" parents grounded me. Anna's song was my shit..
selftaughtgenius@reddit
That’s crazy. They were pretty big here in Canada (unsurprisingly) but Satanism wasn’t really even a point of discussion here at that time so maybe that helped to some degree? Crazy!
Waste_Curve994@reddit
Bummer you have religious nuts in your country too. They’re ruining my country more if that makes you fell any better…
Any yes, I had this album when it came out long ago.

We listen to this album somewhat regularly still. It hit a good rotation when the husband got it on vinyl a few years ago. I can’t believe it’s been 30 years!

Shit, I used to slap this bad boy in the PlayStation 1 after Ridge Racer booted up, allowing you to use a “custom soundtrack” hack while you raced.
I also remember learning every single track of Frogstomp on guitar and drawing a bunch of the cover art tree frogs!
