My foreign boyfriend wants to go to America and I am worried
Posted by JaguarEducational534@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 191 comments
My bf(22) wants to go to USA to work. But I am worried since he has Myanmar nationality and resides in Singapore. He doesn't grasp that Singapore is way better but he is stubborn. He doesn't have permanent residency in Singapore. I am so worried that if he goes to America he'd have a lot of problems, gets detained or even sent back to Myanmar instead of Singapore.
MuchDog4094@reddit
Hi! I've lived in Myanmar for a while, and think this is neat that he is looking into opportunities.
I do know other people from Myanmar who have successfully gotten visas in America, BUT this was before this current administration. Are you American? If not, maybe you could convince him to do Canada, the UK, or Australia instead of he's wanting time in an English-speaking country?
SimplyRoya@reddit
Well he can't just come without a visa. Please don't marry him to bring him here.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
Im not american and i don't reside in america :/
SimplyRoya@reddit
So how is he planning to go there? He's never going to get a green card without at least a million dollars to invest.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
he has family there who could give him a job
SimplyRoya@reddit
That's not how immigration works.
alexa-etc@reddit
Seriously America sucks. We are trying to escape. Quality of life, infrastructure, health care, food, literally all of this is worse than in other countries and you have the threat of gun violence on top of it. If he’s determined to ruin his life then let him. Don’t let it bring you down with him.
smart_cereal@reddit
Enshittification is so heavily intertwined here. The only reason I can imagine her bf would want to move here from Singapore is to make more money but truthfully a lot of it will go towards the insane cost of living. The new tariffs being implemented today will make everything worse. Even people I know making six figures are struggling and are not able to save any money. Everyone I know here is in serious debt. I hope her bf reconsiders. Maybe in the future it’ll be fine to immigrate to but absolutely not for the next four years. My partner and I were planning on leaving at the end of the year but with everything going on, we’ve discussed leaving even earlier.
alexa-etc@reddit
Just realizing that our government doesn’t invest in its people, our quality of life, our health, or our infrastructure has been a big eye opener and I’m about to turn 35 and I’m coming to terms with the fact that I don’t want to waste the rest of whatever life I have left living in a place like that … and then also be constantly afraid I’m gonna get shot on top of it.
forreddituse2@reddit
You need to clarify, does your bf want to work illegally in the US, or does he want the H1B visa route? The former route can take a decade to obtain green card. (usually fake asylum or marriage) Western (white) people like Singapore because they are treated well. They never understand how pathetic life can be for SEA immigrants who hold WP and will hold it forever.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
he wants to work there legally but I am scared for him because of ICE detaining people
forreddituse2@reddit
There is no "want". The only thing matters is that whether there is a US company willing to sponsor his H1b (or other type) visa (highly unlikely unless he is qualified to work in Big Techs). No sponsorship, no legal route.
ICE detains people, which is a risk. Whether to accept the risk and gamble a chance for better life for him and his next generation, it's up to him.
SeanBourne@reddit
How is ‘Singapore way better’? There are places where I could see the argument but SG is not it.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
because I value the safety of my partner.... that's why at this moment it is better to reside in
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
It’s crazy that you think Singapore is any better. You feel safer in a place where you can be imprisoned for criticizing the government or publicly executed for a nonviolent drug crime?
Per human rights watch
“Singapore’s political environment remains overwhelmingly repressive, with serious restrictions on free expression, association, and peaceful assembly through overly broad criminal laws and regulations. In 2023, the authorities carried out the highest number of executions for drug-related offenses in over a decade, including the first woman put to death in 20 years. The government aggressively enforces a sweeping “online falsehoods” law that permits government ministers to order the “correction” or removal of online content, and uses the Foreign Interference (Counter-Measures) Act (FICA) to restrict interactions with foreigners. There are no legal protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.“
RoundCollection4196@reddit
You’ve clearly never stepped foot in Singapore and it shows
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
Yes I don’t like to support oppressive dictatorships. There’s plenty of democracies to visit!
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
well america for sure isn't one right now
Technical-Row8333@reddit
Singapore is authoritarian yes. But it's stable and has well defined rules and has due process. Don't do drugs or criticize the government and you'll be fine. While the US has changed drastically the past month, and who knows what will be happening next month.
Used to be that unless you were an illegal immigrant, proven to be so, you don't get deported. Now you can be a legal immigrant, Trump can pass an EO to change the law and make anything 'illegal' like protesting against Israel, and you get kidnapped by not in uniform not showing ID """police""" and deported without any due process, without a court, without a jury, without evidence. Which means that anyone, even citizens who broke zero laws, can be deported to who knows where.
Without due process, you might be next by random chance and being unlucky.
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
lol “it’s just an authoritarian dictatorship where you can be executed for non violent crimes or imprisoned for political beliefs what’s the big deal??”
Technical-Row8333@reddit
well, it's a comparison with the US. So for your argument to hold any water, compare it to what the US might be in a few months and next year, you can't just re-state how bad Singapore is. I already said it's bad.
Singapore has been the same level of bad and good for the past decades.
the US drastically changed to much worse than it was in a month or two. It's unclear where it will be next year. I wouldn't make any life plans that revolve around the US political situation.
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
You could make the same exact argument here. “If you just stay quiet and support Israel and Trump, aren’t gay/trans, and follow all laws to a T you will be fine” it’s a bullshit argument for places. The worst case scenario here is that we end up like Singapore is now.
Technical-Row8333@reddit
No, you can't. Because:
Singapore has due process, the US is ignoring due process and detaining people, moving them around the country for weeks so they can't get legal representation, and deporting people, without any evidence or transparency.
This change happened just in the last 1~2 months, at drastic speed, meaning there is a shit ton more uncertainty what is going to happen next month much less next 5 years. Compared to Singapore, which has been the same level of authoritarianism for maybe like 2 decades? So it's a lot less risky.
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
You’ve obviously never known an undocumented immigrant because this has always been the case here in the US. But at least they aren’t subject to caning.
“Under section 6 of the Immigration Act, a person found to have illegally entered or left Singapore without a valid pass or entry permit is punishable with a jail term of up to 6 months and at least 3 strokes of the cane”
https://singaporelegaladvice.com/law-articles/penalties-illegal-immigration-overstaying-singapore/#:~:text=Under%20section%206%20of%20the,the%20offender%20is%20above%2050
Pristine-Ad-4306@reddit
I mean getting sent to a highly questionable foreign prison is pretty far up there for really bad things that can happen to you. Also they've been keeping people they plan to deport in detainment in the US for quite a while, even solitary confinement. It wouldn't surprise me if some of them end up staying several months in confinement while either waiting for their case to get through immigration court or while the admin figures out what it wants to do with you.
trippysushi@reddit
He is offended that OP thinks that the US is worse than Singapore... which it is.
Pristine-Ad-4306@reddit
I mean his critiques of Singapore are not wrong. Two places can be bad for similar or different reasons. But also stability and predictability are very important. I for example wouldn't say that you can for sure know what you need to do or not do to stay safe in the US, especially as a foreigner attempting to live there.
inertm@reddit
we’re talking about quality of life. Singapore is really nice. American whose been to Singapore many times here.
slip-slop-slap@reddit
It's very easy to avoid both of those issues
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
Yes I agree. Don’t live in Singapore
trippysushi@reddit
So many of your citizens are scrambling to leave the US now... So many of your citizens on this thread alone are also telling OP's boyfriend not to go to the US. I wonder why.
Poster_Nutbag207@reddit
Yes it’s certainly not an ideal time to immigrate to the U.S. I am not a fan of what is happening but the reality is that the vast majority of the 46 million immigrants who live in the United States will be mostly unaffected by this. Without more information it’s impossible to judge the situation and the right course of action.
carnivorousdrew@reddit
To you. There is no objective way to compare democratic countries and objectively say "This country is better than this other one!". There is what is better to you and it does not necessarily mean it is better for everybody else.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
If trump didn't detain legal foreigners, I wouldnt have to worry. Besides Singapore is safer. No country is the best at all don't get me wrong, I loved america as well for the fact that having your own business could work out well in the USA. But with what's going on right now it's the worst time to move there now isn't it?
__HumbleBee__@reddit
Have you been following the news lately?!
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
Yes I have thats the reason for my concern

Singapore isn’t way better than the US if you want to ski 10+ times a year, own more than a hectare, experience seasons, live in a superpower instead of a city-state….the list goes on endlessly.
I recommend you actually listen to your boyfriend—you come off as thinking that he’s silly, and you know best. Could be the first sign of a dying relationship imo… I wouldn’t want to be talked down to like that.
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
He's not going to the USA to ski 🗿, he just wants to work there. He doesnt even wanna live in the US for all his life, we want both of our lives to be in asia when we settle down. I don't think he's dumb he is just unaware of what's happening to the USA economically and politically. Who in their right mind would not be worried when their partner goes to a country that is detaining tourists!!! Or legal visa holders!!
hermione_clearwater@reddit
He cannot work in the U.S. on a tourist visa…
JaguarEducational534@reddit (OP)
hes not going on a tourist visa, a work visa
hermione_clearwater@reddit
Even then non-citizens with green cards have been told not to leave the U.S., I’m assuming he’d be on an H1B visa so far less protected than an LPR. Best case he gets sent back to Myanmar, worst case he ends up in El Salvador where they’ve accidentally sent at least one US citizen and aren’t helping to get him back (they’ll do even less for a citizen of Myanmar tbh).

LateKaleidoscope5327@reddit
I'm not it's relevant whether he can qualify for a visa. People with permanent residency visas have been detained by this regime with the aim of deporting them. Does your boyfriend want to live in a country where immigrants are being targeted for illegal detention by a racist regime that disdains due process and the rule of law?
Illustrious-Skin2569@reddit

it's disgusting. same tactics isreal uses - which are rightly criticized.
except we have a long history of continuing to do better. we almost made it to 250 years of (mostly) democratic due process. despite failures we fight back and improve. slavery, internment, etc overturned. protesting historically unjust war propels political change.
all because of due process and free speech.
EVEN IF you there are true violent active gang members or hamas bomb vest makers - which sure we all agree they should be deported. BUT ONLY WITH EVIDENCE AND FAIR HEARING.
You're insane if you think getting rid of due process for what you think are special cases won't expand.
They are doing this to give SCOTUS multiple avenues to expand unilateral executive authority and waive habeas corpus.
it won't stop here. they push. little by little. get scotus and congress to abdicate more and more.

do you not get this? an accusation doesn't require evidence. Case in point: you support terrorist organizations. See? it's that easy.
No_Turnip1766@reddit
If they aren't getting due process, you don't know whether they actually support terrorist organizations or not. An accusation without proof presented to a court means nothing. That's the point.

I loved Singapore when I was there 10 years ago. I'm sure it's changed, but so has the U.S. I'm currently working on a semi-permanent move to NZ now. The greatest thing America has going for it is the freedom to do whatever you want to make money. But the costs of doing this is getting too high. America is the land of corporations and oligarchs now. Our political body is composed of millionaires and billionaires. I'm sure Singapore seems like it's more expensive now also. But for a new immigrant to the U.S., it might be a lot worse. First of all, to work, you're going to have to live in a "big" city. Housing in "big cities" is appalling. Your rent will likely be a minimum of 24K per annum (unless you like roaches and rats). Forget healthcare unless your company pays for it, private policies are going to set you back another 8K per year, minimum. Groceries run about 12K per year. Power, Cell phones, and TV will be about 1.6K, 1.6K, and 1.2K per year. Just these "bare essentials" total about 50K per year. It's generally accepted that a single person needs to have a job making about 80K per year to live in a U.S. city reasonably well (and this means getting by without too many luxury trips, items, or activities). Though capitalism has made the U.S. seemingly the richest and most powerful country in the world, it emphasizes money and greed. (By seemingly, I'm alluding to the fact that in 2024 the U.S. debt/GDP ratio - i.e., how much the U.S. owes to how much the U.S. makes in a year - is 124%). The new political administration is trying to remedy this. It remains to be seen whether it's too much to do, and not enough time to do it in.
And one more thing about oligarchy, it probably won't be long (and I mean this seriously) when a few people in this country will become the landlords over everything, i.e., the vast majority of Americans will be "renting" their lives and property and indeed, own nothing. In the U.S., we once "owned" things; now everything is "shared" from homes, to cars, clothes, tools, even love. There is nothing in capitalism that will prevent this. Indeed, it is the ultimate goal.
Make sure your boyfriend does his research. America was, and maybe, hopefully, still is a great country to live in. But the emphasis on money and greed, makes it difficult.

I can understand where he might be coming from with the cultural, social, and racial pressures within Singapore with him not being one of the main 3 ethnic groups there. He wants to be in a country where he is more accepted among the population and potentially less strict on rules and social norms.
However, if he comes to America without a work visa, green card, or spousal sponsorship and he decides to work, his ass will be shipped back to Myanmar. That is the reality of the situation. Or he gets imprisoned. Even if it is only a deportation, that will make it significantly harder to immigrate to most countries later and for some countries, he will be permanently barred for life from even visiting their countries, with him having a deportation from the US.
It might be a better decision for him to consider immigrating to Australia or New Zealand instead. Or potentially another developed nation in the region such as South Korea, Taiwan, or Japan. However, these nations will probably carry similar issues that make him want to leave Singapore.

As an American citizen looking to establish citizenship elsewhere, I cannot tell you how dangerous an idea this is right now. Our government is not only actively targeting immigrants (especially non-white immigrants) but they are also dangerously incompetent. Technical-Row8333@reddit
I'm sorry, did someone say "Oh no an innocent person was taken!" ?
I sure didn't say that. If someone said that, then it would be relevant to say: "actually, not innocent, she committed a crime." It would be relevant to say: "are you sure she is innocent?"
But NO ONE FUCKING SAID THAT
I said there should be due process, court, jury, lawyer, accusation of a crime and the proven that the crime happened.
Do you disagree with having due process or not you fucking coward weasel?
realone3500@reddit
Once again, they clearly had law enforcement badges around their necks. She was arrested. How do you know she was not arrested and then brought in and charged with a crime, as were millions of people when Biden was president. Tell me, how are you so sure?
Technical-Row8333@reddit
An irrelevant question. If there is no due process, both people that break the law and people who don't break the law can have the same thing happen to them, because due process is the process of proving that the law was broken.
Technical-Row8333@reddit
in case anyone with a brain reads this exchange.
No, during Biden and Obama, ICE was not arresting people - wait wrong word, an arrest requires a crime to be enunciated by an police officer - kidnapping people from the streets in plain clothes, without identifying themselves
No, this is not propaganda:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/video-shows-arrest-tufts-university-student-allegedly-supporting-hamas
realone3500@reddit
Every country in the world has examples where non-citizens have been taken off the streets for something they have done. Although it’s very very rare. What the you singling out the United states.
This non citizen was supporting a terror group that killed hundreds of innocent people. Why would any country want a non-citizen like this in their country?
Do stupid things. Get a stupid reward. Try this in the Middle East and see what happens. Try it in Southeast Asia, etc..
What does this have to do with the question by OP? Do you think they plan to come to this country and support a terrorist group? Then damn right, they shouldn’t come to the USA. If not, they are welcome and have ZERO to worry about.
Do you want
Technical-Row8333@reddit
very very few, and that makes it totally okay!!
/s
realone3500@reddit
What country in the world is the exception? You’ve been brainwashed by the media into believing this is an American situation only. This has happened in virtually every country in the world on a minor scale since the beginning of time. Do you not realize this?
Technical-Row8333@reddit
the comment above implies that all countries, today and in the past, ignored due process, had police officers arrest people in plain clothes without identifying themselves, without specifying the crime for which the person is being arrested, and that people arrested have been held for weeks without legal representation, and transferred around to multiple prisons, and deported. that is what I stated was happening, and the reply was "This has happened in virtually every country in the world". This is false.
Technical-Row8333@reddit
the comment above implies that, if other countries do X, then X is not bad.
this is a fallacy. the morality of X does not correlate to the number of countries that do X.
Technical-Row8333@reddit
I hold my country, and the country i live in, and any country with claim to being a first world developed nation, to a much higher standard than "This has happened in virtually every country in the world on a minor scale since the beginning of time"
Yeah, it's almost as if societies have been absolute shit until like, a few decades ago when a few, very few countries, actually did somewhat decent, but a lot more progress still has to be made.
Certainly deporting people without even proving they committed a crime by following due process does not meet my standard.
If that is your standard, then go live in your shit hole country.
realone3500@reddit
Ah so certain countries should be allowed to enforce their borders, laws and regulations and other countries should ignore them.
Do you realize how absurd you sound?
Technical-Row8333@reddit
what the fuck are you talking about?
realone3500@reddit
What you said makes zero sense. You are saying all countries but the USA should enforce their borders, ales and regulations.
99.9999999% of the 12.7 million USA Visa holders have not been deported nor have there ever been any claim they will be deported.
And yet you are still freaking out? What is wrong with you?
Technical-Row8333@reddit
I didn't say that.
realone3500@reddit
So what is the issue?
Technical-Row8333@reddit
you said: "If you follow the laws, rules and regulations, then you have nothing to worry about."
I said: "if there is no due process, there is no need to prove that you "go around causing disruption in society". "
Your claim is wrong. Even law abiding people should worry, because there is now no need to prove that you broke any law before you get detained by """police""" with no uniform, no identification, to proof they are police, without stating what crime did you commit, without reading you your rights, you can be inprisoned, transfered to other prisons around the country, and deported.
In all the replies to did to me, you presented no good arguments against my rebuttal of your premise, that law abiding people need not worry.
One by one:
you said: "The OP is a visa holder. There are 12.7 million visa holders in the USA. What percent of visa holders have been deported by Trump?"
Being a visa holder is irrelevant. There is no guarantee that they will check the visa, there is no guarantee of your rights being upheld.
The percentage of visa holders being deported being low, is somewhat relevant. If it's one in a million, might as well worry about being hit by a car. However, I don't find this argument compelling at all, because
1: OP would be a new visa entering, so their % chance of having trouble is much higher than the % chance affecting the hundreds of millions of PAST VISA HOLDERS. most visa holders interact with officers once, when entering. of course they have a very low chance of having trouble. that is not a good indication of the chance of trouble for new visa holders.
2: in 1~2 months, we went from "if you are not illegal, nothing to worry" to "anyone, citizens, legal visa holders, Canadians, can be locked up by the secret police and transfered around for weeks without legal representation". The fact that very very few people were affected out of millions, is more of an indication of how recently this happened, not how unlikely it is. If this continues for years, the % would get much higher.
After I dismissed your argument that very few people were affected, in another comment you brought up a new argument:
"What country in the world is the exception?"
first, this argument implies that morality is relative. That if all other countries in the world do this, then it's okay. If there is a parallel world where all countries do this, guess what? It is equally bad of an action. Equally. Zero fucking difference in the morality of it. Cunt.
More over, did I ever claim there is a country that does not do this for you to make this question? No, I didn't. You were the first to bring other countries into the conversation for no reason at all. You are derailing the conversation. This is a absolutely awful, shitty argument. You would be destroyed by a 12yo in middle school debate club.
"This has happened in virtually every country in the world on a minor scale since the beginning of time."
No it has fucking not. You are weaselling your way in this argument, by using "this" in "this has happened" without specifying what is "this". You see, I stated that due process is not being followed, which is bad. That is what I was reffering to as "this". You on the other hand, maliciously changed the subject to be "enforcing the border". This is a strawman argument. That means you are attacking things I never said, like fighting a strawman and then pretending you won a fight against me, in case you don't know what that fallacy is.
You then proceeded to completely misunderstand my reply to you, lacking the intelligence to understand this exchange:
implying it's okay because others did it
which is me saying: if other countries did this, that's bad, it doesn't make american good for doing this bad thing.
there, I wrote it like explaining to a 5 year old.
Somehow, you understood this to mean that I'm okay with some countries enforcing their borders and others not. It is impossible to understand that from my statements, but you did it. because you are brain dead.
Safe_Ad_520@reddit
The “fuck you, I got mine” people don’t care and won’t care. They lack empathy, and voted in someone who basically promised revenge against the people who are perceived to be causing our social unrest, i.e. immigrants and refugees. Even if that’s demonstrably untrue. They showed us who they are—ugly, spiteful people who are okay causing the suffering of others.
Even after WWII liberation and after the death camps became worldwide news, there were still massacres of Jewish people and other minorities committed, like the Kielce pogrom in Poland. Hateful assholes will never learn.
realone3500@reddit
I’m not reading all this nonsense. You sound like a deranged trump hater. Respond with facts, data and statistics that show me legal citizens and/or visa holders are being deported in mass.
Oh you can’t? Because they aren’t. Turn off the mainstream news.
Angel_Sorusian_King@reddit
Refugees have every right to be here, they are here legally sponsored by the United States government. You can't just kick them out.
Congrats for showing your heartlessness.
I'm not criticizing Germany because I'm not German, I don't know what's going on there, and this post is not talking about Germany.
realone3500@reddit
Well maybe you should be aware of worldwide politics before making a blanket claim. Why not criticize Europe for kicking out their refugees?
Angel_Sorusian_King@reddit
Stop moving the goalpost. I'm not making a blanket claim, we are talking specifically about the United States. What Europe is doing to refugees has absolutely no relation to what the United States is doing to refugees.
Everyone inside the country is protected by the constitution, even non citizens who are here legally. If a foreign student decides to go and protest that is her legal right.
We're are not free speech unless you are a foreigner.
realone3500@reddit
Do not come to the USA and claim to be a refugee. Good. Look at what happened to Europe by allowing millions of ‘economic immigrants’ into the country that claimed to be refugees.
You made a post about refugees being kicked out and a post about one random pro-palestine protestor.
Where’s the post about the mass deportation of legal citizens, legal visa holders, etc.. being kicked out?
Someone is out of touch and being brainwashed by the media into a false reality.
Angel_Sorusian_King@reddit
Refugee status is a very extensive process, as I just quoted above, you need to provide valid evidence for your refugee status, you don't get to walk in and just declare refugee status.
I mentioned the refugee post and the protestor post because you said
The posts I shared literally show that is not true. In both instances these people were following the laws and regulations. They aren't criminals, they didn't kill anybody or harm anyone.
As for your last comment, here you go
realone3500@reddit
Refugees have absolutely no right to stay in a country.
The OP is not a refugee nor are they claiming refugee status. Nor do they most likely plan to go around and protest for Palestine.
Why should they be worried or concerned?
Angel_Sorusian_King@reddit
They should be worried and concerned because people, who are here legally, are getting arrested despite the laws and court rulings. That is the entire point of this conversation I have been trying to point out to you.
realone3500@reddit
You mean the handful of people that are actively protesting publicly about being pro-Palestine, correct?
So the OP has absolutely nothing to worry about as a legal visa holder, if they do not go around protesting against Palestine, correct?
Halfjack12@reddit
You are painfully dim.
realone3500@reddit
You are painfully ignorant. What did I say that is incorrect? What does the OP have to worry about as a legal visa holder?
Angel_Sorusian_King@reddit
The point of this conversation has absolutely gone over your head. Oh well.
Have the day you deserve.
realone3500@reddit
The hsa bas 12.7 legal visa holders. What percent of them have been deported? Less than 0.00000001%.
And yet the OP should be worried, right? People like you with trump derangement syndrome that cause absurd fearmongering should be required to seek psychiatric help.
Rheum42@reddit
Ah yes, only you "European Americans" get to have free reign
realone3500@reddit
Free rein of what? A European or American will get kicked out of any country for overstaying or illegally being in a country.
Salcha_00@reddit
You are extremely out of touch with reality.
I get it. Your brain isn’t yet allowing you to acknowledge the travesty you committed by voting this monster into the presidency, so you will continue to believe the propaganda and dismiss any information that is contrary to your beliefs.
Sad. You will eventually wake up to the horrors when someone you know is impacted.
Glittering_Dark_1582@reddit
It’s a fucking cult. Don’t expect anything that they say to make sense or be based in reality.
Subject-Shoe-5764@reddit
As a U.S citizen as well, I would 100 percent agree with this. This is not the time to try to come to America as an immigrant. It is a sad and scary time, and even U.S. citizens are on high alert. I hope we make it through intact, and reemerge to live up to our American principles once again.
hermione_clearwater@reddit
This. I wouldn’t trust the U.S. at all right now.

My brother in law has been a legal resident for years in the US, but had the unfortunate issue that his relative happened to die while the orange loon got inaugurated. He was detained for a week.
Sugarloaf78@reddit
He should definitely not come here, and if he insists, you don’t come with him. It’s not safe.
Ok_Development3162@reddit
It’s not a good right now he needs to wait
Arbersulavan@reddit
They still need good workers in US. He should be fine as long as he is doing his job
Duke_Newcombe@reddit
Your BF picked a fine time to try to come here, from where he's from.
Myanmar is in the "yellow" category of Trump's proposed Travel Ban 2.0 list, meaning that visa to nationals of that nation will be "sharply restricted".
We'll leave aside how the mood has changed both among many of the populace, and this government toward those coming here--he'll be subject to the very same issues that residents from other nations are getting here (getting grabbed off the street, raids on home/school/business, severe restrictions on even nominally critical speech or associations, revocation of visas for trivial/no reasons).
_twinsizemattress__@reddit
This is the worst possible time to consider coming here. He is safer staying in Singapore. I actually have family moving to Singapore from New York this year.
tehereoeweaeweaey@reddit
What if he got a remote job in Europe? The American economy is garbage and will get worse. Not worth coming all the way here for work when you have a better exchange rate elsewhere.
smirc99@reddit
Your BF is better off staying in Singapore. Setting aside current political climate in USA, the cost of living is similar with less opportunities for work should he try to get into the USA.
If it gives you solace, He will likely be denied a tourist visa given his home country is literally on the banned list.
ma-doodles@reddit
do not come to the US
Seachica@reddit
Ask your BF what he thinks he will find in the US. Many immigrants think all the US is like what they see on tv/movies, but the reality is that immigrants without wealth often start making very little money vs the cost of living here (sure, $10/hour is a ton by Myanmar standards, but it won’t buy you a hamburger in many parts of the country). And where there is a lower cost of living, the areas are very rural and nothing like the cities most people think of as the US
He is from Myanmar, where the US-Myanmar is very touchy. If caught here illegally, he would likely be sent to Myanmar or to a camp in El Salvador. No way would he be sent back to Singapore. If he is here legally, he still runs the risk of deportation in the current political environment.
Are you Singaporean? Could you not marry him to give him legal status there? And if he really wants to go to the US, is he a serious boyfriend? Something is missing here.
SkittyLover93@reddit
Singaporean here. Marriage to a Singaporean does not automatically grant legal status, and if he were to successfully get it, it does not come with work authorization. Work authorization has to be applied for separately, and there's no guarantee of getting it.
Adventurous_Fig4650@reddit
Do. NOT. Come. Here.
You have been warned…
Entertainthethoughts@reddit
Is it possible he has ulterior motives? Has this relationship been serious for quite some time? If not, putting yourself through such a difficult process might not be worth it. Can you live with losing him to a detention center?
WC-Boogercat@reddit
America has always had problems, but they used to be worth it for many because of the benefits. Those benefits are gone. It's not the America people used to dream of coming to. He shouldn't come.
ExpatHomesItaly@reddit
Any time someone other than a centeral or south American gets detained its literally international news. Its super politicized so people really ham it up every time it happens. If it were more common then people would be talking statistics instead of doing a whole article on each individual time it happens.
It will be just fine. My wife is Italian and we have had 0 problems going in and out.
Rheum42@reddit
The "European Americans" we live with, everybody
ExpatHomesItaly@reddit
We dont live in the US, but we come and go a lot.
But, who cares. Take advice from a bunch of people who have no experience if you want.

You have a US passport and your wife is travelling with you. As far as the US is concerned, bf is an illegal alien and he will be sent to the gulag in El Salvador.
ExpatHomesItaly@reddit
You are fear mongering just to shill your political beliefs. If you have no experience with it then you shouldnt even be talking about it. You are literally just making stuff up.
may_be_indecisive@reddit
I don't have to experience something myself to understand that it's happening. What a ridiculous idea.

Travellers may not be being send to El Salvador prison right now but they are being detained. It's not a big leap with this president.
ExpatHomesItaly@reddit
Yeah, exactly like I said. An article for an individual time someone was detained. Then stories about undocumented people from south america being deported via El salvador.
You are literally a misinformation spreader telling people they will get "sent to el salvador" for coming to America. You are so stupid bro. Its obvious you have a chip on your shoulder.
