vienna to bologna

I’m feeling overwhelmed trying to plan my itinerary, and all my ideas seem to involve too much travel.
Dates: • Arrive Vienna – August 4 (11:20 AM) • Depart Bologna – August 15 (12:00 PM)
Ideas I’ve Considered: 1. Vienna → Innsbruck → Dolomites → Bologna (all by train) • Concerned about recent delays on Vienna to Innsbruck trains. • The Dolomites seem tricky to reach by train. 2. Vienna → Flight to Bologna → Cinque Terre → Bologna • Feels travel-heavy, and I’m not sure if it’s the best use of my time.
I enjoy walking, outdoor cafes, beer, scenic areas, and food-focused stops like Parma and Modena. I’d prefer to cut down on long travel days while still having a mix of city, food, and nature. I prefer train travel, but a bus or plane could work if needed. I do not want to drive.
Suggestion greatly appreciated!

How about Vienna > Worgl, spend a couple days there in the Austrian Alps > Bologna. Then use time in Bologna for day trips to Parma/Modena/Ferrara which you would likely enjoy and are all easily accessible.
Just two easy direct trains, and you still get your mountain time.

Can you tell me where to get info on the two direct trains? Thanks!

The Vienna > Worgl train will be via OBB (https://www.oebb.at/en/), the Worgl to Bologna train via Deutschmark Bahn (https://int.bahn.de/en).
Even though it’s a little annoying to have to book them in separate places, I would 100% do this versus book through a 3rd party site like Rome 2 Rio.

Vienna -Innsbruck-Bolzano-Bologna by train works all right for me.
A bit tight in your timeframe, but possible.
The CT and back is too far out of your way.Parma and/or Modena you can visit from Bologna,if you have the time..or maybe one of them on the way from Bolzano to Bologna.

Thinking of skipping Innsbruck. Maybe break the trip from Vienna to Bologna with two stops. A few nice towns on the train route. Bonus, if I can get a hike in and enjoy a tasty beer. Any ideas?

Lots of nice places on that route... depends which line you take.
You have Salzburg nearer to Vienna. And Verona or Padova in Italy, for example...all well worth seeing.
Salzburg has some great hiking nearby, some really nice mountains.
