If you decide to shut down a highway in a hail storm…

Just know there is a special place in hell for you, and you are the worst kind of person. Happened to me yesterday just north of Fairfield; some idiots shut down all of 45, what would’ve been a 5-minute drive through some minor hail ended up being 15 minutes getting pelted by eventual baseball-sized hail. Saw it happen again today in Mesquite. Unacceptable.
BunkMoreland1414@reddit
Protecting yourself while saying a fuck you to everyone else has become Americans’ calling card. I’m not shocked to see this manifestation of it.
OrneryError1@reddit
It's noticeably much more pervasive in Texas than any other place I've been in the U.S. Texas pride now is just dangerous roads, dirty parks, and dickish behavior.
LilDebSez@reddit
Texas wasn't like that before everyone started moving here a couple decades ago. When I first moved here from CA 40 yrs ago, I (and all other transplants) would remark how shocked we were by how nice and thoughtful Texans were. It was very foreign to all of us. So I would argue that it's not Texans, it's the transplanted people who are the problem.
JayZ_237@reddit
Then why aren't the states they came from anywhere near as notorious as Texas for low self awareness, zero empathy "fuck you" behavior? I'm native, BTW.
It changed, in real time, w/the breaking bad to the hard right politics & politicians of the state.
Op_ivy1@reddit
Have you ever driven in Los Angeles? If not, I wouldn’t recommend it. A lot of these places are known for these things.
whip_lash_2@reddit
I’ve driven in Los Angeles during an atmospheric river, basically a hurricane without the wind. It took three hours to get from the city limit to El Segundo. But nobody cut me off without a signal, nobody sped up to block me changing lanes, nobody brake checked me, and nobody ran a red light or tried to cut across 8 lanes of traffic to exit.
All that happens at least weekly in DFW. I don’t have a strong opinion about whether it’s natives or transplants or both, but somebody here has a problem.
James318b@reddit
Wouldn’t that just be a monsoon like rain?
Op_ivy1@reddit
All those things have happened to me in LA 🤷♂️
JDM_TX@reddit
I lived in LA for a year. Traffic was not the worst. Yeah, there's a lot of traffic, and the highway is crowded, but when I put on a blinker I can move over. When I want to merge onto the hwy, I was able.
Much better than Dallas!
Naive-Cheesecake2233@reddit
California liberals vs states that they mainly have Califonrina conservatives moving into.
LilDebSez@reddit
It has gotten worse lately. You have to consider that during that time there was a huge increase in people coming from other states. And all those people have the attitude that Texas should change because where they moved from was superior.
ChicagoRay312@reddit
This notion that people in Texas were just all accommodating and had empathy is ridiculous. It has zero to do with people coming from other states. People in Texas just don’t care about others.
rohrloud@reddit
I grew up in north Texas and people were more “we’re all in this together”, than “me first”
syzygialchaos@reddit
West Texas here, people were very much mind your biscuits and bless your heart. Now that layer of genteelness is just flat out gone. Sucks, it was part of what made Texas great.
LilDebSez@reddit
It does suck. Then people who never knew the old ways come and bash TX cause what TX is to be known for has been overtaken.
daniipants@reddit
Yeeeea someone said it further down, what Texas used to be was a thin veneer of politeness covering up raging sexism, racism, and homophobia. The mask might be slipping, but don’t try to tell me that Texas used to stand for love and equality and kindness. Being polite isn’t the same as being kind.
OddSand7870@reddit
This. When was the last time you let someone merge and they waved thank you? It waserycommon
LilDebSez@reddit
That's exactly what I'm talking about. It's really sad. My kids don't feel the ties to Texas, because they have had that experience... Even when we lived in other states for a few years.
srw9320@reddit
That's not my experience. I transplanted from the least empathetic state (Michigan while in an auto recession) to Texas in 1983 and could not believe how nice people were. I chose Texas over job offers from California, Florida, Missouri, Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia, and of course, Michigan in large part due to the culture of the state.
fletchlives2323@reddit
You've lost your mind. We used to be the most polite state in the country. Which I'm sure had some impact on the Californians coming here. Of course most people moved for work, but the type of people that were here sure didn't affect that decision making in a negative way. I don't know how many times I've held the door open for somebody and they commented how that's never done back where they're from. The current problem with people y'all are talking about isn't a Texas thing, it's a United States issue. Everyone is out for themselves and they're brainwashed by the media and government. United we stand, divided we fall. And through TV and school curriculum they have divided us immaculately
ChicagoRay312@reddit
Most polite? This is a state that teaches children that the civil war was about “state’s rights.” You can pat yourself on the back and think that Texas somehow had cornered the market on being polite, but apparently only towards a certain segment of a population.
whip_lash_2@reddit
Yes. My racist grandma was extremely polite to Black people, especially by modern standards. There is a difference among polite, nice, and kind.
ChicagoRay312@reddit
Racist yet polite. Hooray Texas!
whip_lash_2@reddit
Better than racist and impolite, I think was the point. No one is pretending that Texas is paradise, or has historically been a nice place for women and minorities, or whatever other thing you’re trying and failing to make this about.
All that’s being said is that there used to be a pleasant veneer that’s now been peeled off, making it… wait for it… less pleasant. It manifests itself in things that didn’t previously happen, like parking on a freeway during a hailstorm.
ChicagoRay312@reddit
You decided to chime in. I was responding to the notion that Texas was ever somehow the “most polite” state.
LilDebSez@reddit
I agree. I think it goes both ways. And yes, people all over the US are not held up to thee old standards of decorum and influences have tainted behavior. It will only change when people start expecting and demanding better behavior.
Argentus01@reddit
That is false.
ChicagoRay312@reddit
Nah, it’s true.
cscaggs@reddit
You're clearly bitter and not a texan. If you think people in places like NYC are as courteous and respectful as people from Texas or the Midwest you are completely uninformed.
Additional-Push-5950@reddit
Uh i'll have you know the people in NYC are very courteous. Every time I work there people are super friendly, they even still have shower caps taped to the smoke detectors in the hotel rooms so you don't have to inconvenience yourself, and the food selection is amazing.
I've driven cross country 6x and lived in 7 states and after living for a year in Dallas I'd rather be in LA traffic any day of the week than this bullshit here. Hell even in NYC there are rules. Here its lifted truck assholes that can't use turn signals trying to bully you into guard rails because they want to do a lane swap or trying to play frogger in a 90s suburban between you and the 18 wheeler in front of you.
People can't drive for shit here and every single uber/lyft driving native I've met whos been out of the area agrees, and everyone thats been here for 20-30 years remarks on how much worse its gotten the past 10 years.
I honestly can't tell whos worse the unaware inconsiderate assholes in the Cybertrucks and Teslas, the BMWS which I don't even think come with a turn signal installed anymore, or the roll coal lifted clown fucks.
cscaggs@reddit
I wasn't referencing driving habits at all, but I agree people don't know how to drive, in Dallas and LA.
NYC is famous for being rude so I'm not sure about all that. I suppose there are courteous people everywhere same as rude people everywhere.
All I can say is that the people I interact with, random strangers, are all kind to me.
If you're saying things changed around 10 years ago that would indicate an influx of people who are transplants.
Anyway, have a great evening!
Additional-Push-5950@reddit
Dude i've ran into more inconsiderate clowns in Dallas in all aspects than anywhere in America. The driving is just the tip of the iceberg.
cscaggs@reddit
That's really hard to believe based on my experience, but I won't take away from your personal experience.
Why do you think random strangers who you've had no interaction with prior are, as you call them, clowns and being inconsiderate to you?
Do you hold doors for people? Do you make eye contact and greet them? Do you smile and make attempts at small talk? Do you say things like 'please' 'thank you' 'youre welcome' 'have a good day' etc. ?
I'm trying to understand what's going on in your day to day.
Additional-Push-5950@reddit
Well, how many states and countries have you lived in?
cscaggs@reddit
Two countries. 4 states in one country and 2 states in the other country.
I've also visited several more than I've lived in.
Now that I've answered your questions, can you answerine please?
Why do you think random strangers who you’ve had no interaction with prior are, as you call them, clowns and being inconsiderate to you?

ChicagoRay312@reddit
That’s rich. Respectful isn’t constantly gloating about “Texas is the best” by many people that have never left the state.
BewilderedParsnip@reddit
Oh yes and everyone in Chicago just cares about their neighbors don't they? Texas was fine until all you people came here trying to turn it into the crapholes you fled from.
LilDebSez@reddit
I take it you're from another state. I'm from another state as well, and have the self awareness and awareness of the changes I've seen to recognize there is cause and effect at play here. You say "Zero to do..." Kinda like when the people came to America and encountered Indians. Are you gonna say the Indians were the problem?
ChicagoRay312@reddit
Well, no, since they were Native Americans. Also, your analogy is way off.
LegendOfShaun@reddit
Because CA Republicans move here so now we doubled are assholes
whip_lash_2@reddit
You understand that the hard right turn is also transplants, right? Native Texans voted majority Beto O’Rourke for senator, not sure about the last guy.

Texans deflect as much as I have ever seen. Any issue with the state is blamed on the boogeyman, i.e. people moving from out of state, usually Californians. Texans love to blame California on every single problem.
fletchlives2323@reddit
Well have you seen the way California is ran?
JDM_TX@reddit
have you seen how TX is ran?
fletchlives2323@reddit
Yes. Lived here my whole life. Its ran just fine. We could support ourselves if we needed to. Trust me
ryanwolf74@reddit
Who cares? This is Texas they’re talking about. You’re proving their point. Have you seen the way Texas is ran?
MoroseMorgan@reddit
I don't think it's the transplants. I think it was just the greater cultural shift in America creeping in and infecting Texans.
rambam80@reddit
This is it exactly. United States culture has become a cesspool of consumerism and me first mentality.
ByronFerrari@reddit
I lived here in the ‘80s/90s as a kid when Dallas was decimated by the greed and reckless behavior of the banking and business community. My dad had a high-ranking job, so we got a close up view of it. The Dallas culture of extreme selfishness and greed overlaid with a veneer of pleasantness and faux-earnestness existed back then and was a shock to a non-native like him. 1990s Dallas was a chastened place, brought down by the bust, so it seemed a bit nicer. Looking at where the state has gone, it’s clear that was temporary and the core was still rotten. This place attracts a lot of selfish, junk people from elsewhere because of its core values, not in spite of them.
Snobolski@reddit
Texas relaxed regulation to allow the worst businesses free rein. They came here and brought their trash culture, and we encouraged it.
JDM_TX@reddit
not WE but Gov Hot Wheels.
Enough_Equivalent379@reddit
Ditto! We moved here (from Minnesota) 40 years ago. Quite different back then: - Most everything closed on Sundays (Blue Laws). - Very friendly neighbors for the most part. - Native Texans very proud to be (and sometimes a little bit defensively so). - Ladies dressed to go shopping. Included gloves if going to Northpark or Galleria. - Traffic was way worse then than now, of you can believe that. LBJ was a logjam and 75 Central was only 2 lanes in each direction.
Vivid_Speech3773@reddit
Merging onto Central (75) was an experience. There were stoplights at all the entrance ramps. Had to wait until the light turned green, mash down on the gas pedal while saying a short prayer and somehow squeeze into a space between two pickups. Fun times.
North of LBJ (635), access roads were two way. Confusingly both the highway and the access roads were called Central Expressway.
JDM_TX@reddit
Loved the old 50' entrance ramps. /s
Better mash that gas and hope you can get up to speed before your lane runs out into a cement wall.
MethanyJones@reddit
The best asshole filter ✨ever invented💫 is telling Texans you moved from California.
crooke86@reddit
I drove a friend's rental car with California plates when they were in town last year. That unlocked an entirely different level of asshole driver compared to driving my own car or any other time I've used a rental with out of state plates. The car might as well have had a target painted on it.
LilDebSez@reddit
Okaayy. Moved here at age 14. And I love Texas and I'm saddened by the changes I've seen as more and more people move into the state. So, not trying to be an asshole, just noting that people who moved here, just as my family did, are part of the problem. I would think the assholes are those that say they moved here and Texas needs to change for them.
MethanyJones@reddit
Cool story
Argentus01@reddit
Humm… people who don’t belong moving here… I’ve been hearing that’s a problem…
8Tsfan1968@reddit
Totally agree here
Beautiful_Sipsip@reddit
Absolutely agree with you! I’ve experienced the same. I was pleasantly surprised when moving to Texas first two decades ago. People were kind and welcoming. I remember that my new neighbors started showing up with pies and cookies to welcome us to their neighborhood. Now, I have no idea who my neighbors even are after moving to a new place about a year ago. Everything started to change when out-of-state people started showing up in large numbers. We don’t have true Texas culture anymore in big cities. In the countryside and small towns though people are mostly kind and considerate
LilDebSez@reddit
Unfortunately, I find myself learning for those small town communities and wish they had jobs. And then... the cycle begins again. 🤷🏼♀️
Warm_Sugar8888@reddit
Thank you! I’m a native Texan of 62 years and I agree.
LilDebSez@reddit
And this "warm_sugar" is fitting. 😁
playballer@reddit
We’ve imported people primarily due to our good economy since then. That is to say, the only reason people came here is because of money and have little ties to the existing community. We can’t be too surprised when they all act greedy and selfish once they get here.
No_Satisfaction_6797@reddit
Only if you are white.
ghoul5843@reddit
Texas kindness was carried by a few rare souls, but for the most part it’s superficial and performative. I am a native but I dated a woman from Chicago around 20 years ago and she remarked about how kind Texans are. I did not get it because I never knew anything else.
I moved to Illinois with her for about a year, and I noticed what she meant. It’s mostly just the way we talk and suppress contempt until your back is turned. The people up north were just as kind in action but were much more blunt and upfront in the way they would speak to you.
boldjoy0050@reddit
This is common across the south. People say things but don't mean them. No telling how many times my wife and I have heard "we should get dinner sometime" or "we are going to have you guys over soon". It's all bullshit to make you think the person saying it is nice.
melalovelady@reddit
Are you saying that the native Texans acting like this were all persuaded to become assholes by transplants? Bc I see a LOT of people that are born here acting like this.
LilDebSez@reddit
No, I'm saying you see more of the behavior because the while atmosphere has changed. Kinda like when you put chocolate in milk, and then you have chocolate milk and when you put vinegar in milk it's gonna sour the milk.
red_whiteout@reddit
The atmosphere has changed because of political decisions and the gradual breakdown of social services by corporate-owned actores

Idk man, been around awhile and my boomer parents agree that it seems people with empathy vote democrat and people who lack it vote republican 🤷♂️. Also in general even 10 years ago and less so as you go back people weren't being convinced the other side is amoral and evil.
Really it's all a ploy to get us infighting within our classes so as not to realize that all of the people in power are screwing us.

The tea party Republicans were making effigies of Obama and lynching and setting fire to them back in 2008-2016
Nolyism@reddit
Oh come on, of course there are examples of hate, it wasn't all sunshine and roses. But it was nowhere near as pervasive, I could still communicate with half my family without them always bringing up what the "radical left" did this week.
TeaKingMac@reddit
Yeah, ok, that's fair.
I'm not sure what's happened in the last 10 years to make everything so much more tense.

Worthlessstupid@reddit
That’s because half of this state likes to pretend they personally defended the Alamo and rode the Llano Estacoda with the Rangers, rather than being golf bros in F250s driving to their home in Frisco.
RamboAlvatorres114@reddit
Around here, they'll say "I'll do anything for my family" but they really mean "I hope I get to commit violence in the name of my family". They never mean "I'll invest time, energy, and resources into building relationships and infrastructure for the betterment of my family and, by extension, my community." 😫
BewilderedParsnip@reddit
I've lived in Texas all my life. Drivers did not act like this in the 70s and early '80s. Then we started getting people from other states and now Texas is inundated with rude people who can't drive.
faeriechyld@reddit
You misspelled "rugged individualism".
(I fucking hate it too.)
lifegoeson5322@reddit
Oh, I wouldn't call out just Texas on that. I take long road trips every summer, going to other states and immersing myself in their culture (including visiting many parks which were in bad conditions) and I've noticed over the last ten years a increasing amount of dickish behavior from about every place I visited. I basically attribute it to lower living standards and people emulating our politics.
Gummibehrs@reddit
I agree.
Politics has become more of a sport now, my team vs your team. People are very divided. People vote against their own best interests just to say fuck you.
And everything is broadcast/televised/posted on social media so we just are constantly bombarded with depressing news.
People are under more stress than ever - working longer hours, sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic longer, cost of living is high, not much in savings if any. Not much time if any to enjoy hobbies, travel, or leisurely activities.
Having kids is expensive and daycare costs are astronomical. Medical care can bankrupt a person and some people can’t even seek it. Air quality is shit. I could go on, but these are all very valid reasons why people are more assholish now vs 30 years ago or whatever.
Front-Door-2692@reddit
By product of Covid. Instead of only taking one package of toilet paper to get you through the next week or two, clear out the whole shelf. Now you have enough for the next 2 years and everyone else was sent into a frenzied panic buy doing the same thing. That mentality has not gone away.
navaja1965@reddit

iIkonoes@reddit
You are lucky if you live in small pockets where people are still decent as I feel I do. I live on the boundary of three cities where all have different income brackets and what I consider very diverse.in my perspective. And for the 95% of the people in the area, they're are the same good people. There are a few bad seeds but the rest make up for that 5%.
FingerEmbarrassed902@reddit
I’ve worked on hail damage for over a decade. Happens every single time in every single city. If the hail is bad it sounds like the world is ending and people get rightfully scared. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to stop, could be dangerous too. Windshields break and shit
ChaoselementX@reddit
This was the most frustrating going doing 635 northbound and seeing everyone race down the shoulder, dive under 35E bridges trying to shelter from tiny ass hail, and causing traffic to stop suddenly.
dicknut420@reddit
Serious question.
Who is at fault if you slam into someone stopped under an overpass in the middle of the highway?
Spiritual-Coyote-950@reddit
If you legitimately reared by accident, the stopped vehicle can be found to be at fault. Depends on the cop you get, I suppose? My husband ran out of gas on a fairly small through street and was rear ended. He was found at fault for having let his car run out of gas. Even though he had pulled over and turned his flashers on!
K3B1N@reddit
You
TwiztedImage@reddit
Obstructing a roadway when you have the right-of-way is a traffic offense.
So technically, the first car stopped is at fault, but good luck with an officer finding them after the fact, or even bothering to look.
But if you hit that first stopped car, you're not at fault, in the very least, not completely at fault.
Everyone should have a dash cam.
LilDebSez@reddit
I wonder if you could get traffic camera footage?
TwiztedImage@reddit
I doubt there is any to request. Not that many cameras out on the roadways.
LilDebSez@reddit
I asked because the other day I can't across txdot camera online. I was surprised by how many cameras there actually are. https://its.txdot.gov/its/District/DAL
TwiztedImage@reddit
I guess there are more than I thought, but I still don't feel like it's so many that I can expect to be on a camera in the event of an accident. Which...maybe I don't want either? If I'm being honest, lol.
Mixed feelings on how much I want to be filmed by govt entities, lol.
toobadornottoobad@reddit
In Texas both parties can be at fault as far as insurance is concerned. But if you rear end someone you're always going to be at fault unless you can prove some serious outlying explanation. I would imagine someone being stopped doesn't count if conditions are so that you could reasonably see them.
TwiztedImage@reddit
Anecdotal, but I've personally seen it twice.
My roomie rear ended a lady who stopped while making a right hand turn into a parking lot. He told the officer, "She stopped while turning in and I wasn't paying attention and couldn't stop in time." Officer talked to her, she admitted she stopped. She got a ticket for obstruction and my roomie got nothing.
I watched someone stop at a yield sign when they had their own protected lane (they stopped so they could cross the double white, make two illegal lane changes, and then turn).
Guy rears ends her. She wont move the car, so we're all stuck there waiting since they're blocking the road. Cop showed up, told her to move. I gave a statement stating that she had stopped entirely before she was hit. She got a ticket, the other guy got nothing.
You're simply not always at fault. Neither of those instances even had dash cam footage.
toobadornottoobad@reddit
You're talking about cops making judgment calls, I'm talking about insurance. Cops decide not to cite people every day, I wouldn't take a cop deciding not to cite someone as they were not liable for the accident.
TwiztedImage@reddit
Police reports drastically influence insurance decisions.
BrokeBoy2600@reddit
Yea, break checking is illegal and crashing into someone who stopped for no apparent reason can be seen as break checking and the guy who crashed would not be at fault
dicknut420@reddit
So one is allowed to simply impede the flow of traffic with no repercussions?
alltheblues@reddit
You can’t do that either. I’d imaging there’s some kind of ticket for it, but rear ending someone is still almost always the fault of the trailing car. Still, good reason to buy a dashcam.
K3B1N@reddit
If you rear end somebody, it’s your fault. This how things work. I don’t make the rules, I just know them.
boldjoy0050@reddit
That's certainly true but I'm sure there are laws for being improperly parked somewhere which may cause the fault to shift somewhat.
K3B1N@reddit
There probably are, but proving it is where it gets sticky

It may be a traffic offense to stop on the highway. But it's still a crime and a tort to go ahead and hit them vigilante-style.
Unpetits@reddit
So unfortunately, dicknut40, “repercussions” are definitely not covered by insurance.
You can call 911 but you can’t use your car as a battering ram against idiots.
MethanyJones@reddit
You can also get charged with assault with a deadly weapon
rob2722@reddit
I can tell you exactly how it’ll go down. Your argument is the guy under the bridge, stopped. Is it night? Street lamps work? Or daylight? Was the cars hazard lights working? For all you know, they could’ve had a break down at that “unfortunate time.” Assuming yes to anyone of those, YOU on the other hand, have a duty to maintain safe distance and speed (reasonable and prudent for conditions) and to maintain proper lookout. Now, you can go ahead and play road rage if you want, but you know your policy doesn’t cover intentional acts.
Folks that do this stupid shit are either worried about rates going up (which is not always the case) so they rather hold up traffic under a bridge, OR they don’t have comprehensive coverage to begin with and know they’ll have to pay for this damage themselves.
I personally think the proximate cause was because this guy stopped to avoid hail. Unfortunately, it’s you who read ends them.
dicknut420@reddit
So just make sure someone hits me afterwards. Or be uninsured. That seems to save them from ever having to pay.
rob2722@reddit
Your example is more of a law example. Mine is a civil one, much like PD insurance
paralleliverse@reddit
You have to make a genuine good faith attempt to avoid the collision. I've seen people killed by drunk drivers who were stopped (asleep) on the freeway with their lights off in the middle of the night. Just because you're the one in the battering ram doesn't mean you won't be the one who dies. The law wants you to make every possible attempt to avoid getting yourself or anyone else killed.
LilDebSez@reddit
It's illegal to stop on the highway.

I expect nothing less from drivers here. They’re all selfish assholes or just generally clueless. I see red light runners every single day. Some even use the open right turn lane to pass the stopped cars then run straight through a red. Keep your wits about you out here.

I would say, it’d be nice if some semis on a double with reefer trailers, were right behind those people. Unfortunately, I’d feel bad for the truckers but getting rid of these parasites may save more lives.

HOLY SH!T, seriously! Thank you for posting! I called my husband from the road yesterday for a legit sanity check because I could NOT believe that people were stopping under an overpass in Plano. They were 5-6 car lanes across and maybe 4-6 cars deep there was only one lane to barely pass through. I have NEVER ever seen that in my life. It was bizarre and stupid and dangerous and incredibly selfish. I laid on my horn that whole time while shouting profanities over the sound of gumball sized hail hitting my car!

Always remember being to nice and allowing a woman to stand in the last parking spot on the garage at my apartment saving it for a friend. I parked outside and my car looked like a golf ball the next morning.
Fearless_Height7407@reddit
Do they not have insurance?
Perky214@reddit
Who shot the highway down - law enforcement or private citizens
tacoscholar@reddit (OP)
People stopping under the overpasses because they didn’t want their vehicles in the hail.
Perky214@reddit
Aha. Sorry buddy - can’t fix selfish assholicity
jamesdukeiv@reddit
Sure you can, just have to get up to ramming speed
Aderj05@reddit
Great way to harm yourself, someone else, and have to pay a fuck ton of money in insurance and medical bills and possibly get sued. So yeah, pretty stupid suggestion.
jamesdukeiv@reddit
So there’s this wild thing called a joke https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=joke
Aderj05@reddit
Yeah well people are fucking insane enough to do just that so thought I’d put that out there. In a world where people get shot or run over for blocking roads during protests it’s pretty difficult to tell
red_hair_lover@reddit
That's shittt
94Trooperman@reddit
Happened last night on Loop 12 and Jefferson too. 50 cars trying to avoid pea sized hail that lasted less than 10 minutes. What a bunch of assholes.
ImpregnableDefense@reddit
Pics of your new aerodynamic car or it didn't happen
Recreational_Pissing@reddit
People downvoting because they don't know about the speed holes that make your car go faster
bloodygoodgal@reddit
Ok I'd be pissed too.
Quiet-Section203@reddit
Zing!
BustedEchoChamber@reddit
Half the reason we live in Texas is for its independence mindset. It’s my right to protect my car from hail. If you didn’t want to get caught in it you should have taken heed of the forecast.
PresidentBaileyb@reddit
It’s not your right to block a roadway. If you didn’t want to get caught in it, you should have taken heed of the forecast
BustedEchoChamber@reddit
It’s my right to do anything I want as long as I don’t personally/physically harm you, I am a libertarian.
Latter_Hat_7995@reddit
I am an idiot*
FTFY
BustedEchoChamber@reddit
Libertarianism is mental illness, not idiocy.
Latter_Hat_7995@reddit
Then get off the public highways and stop using government subsidized gasoline
TTRedRaider27@reddit
you're a worthless piece of shit.
psellers237@reddit
You really shouldn’t brag about that.
PresidentBaileyb@reddit
It’s illegal to impede traffic regardless of your political stance. I think I should be able to run into you if you stop in an underpass, that doesn’t make it legal.
See how that works?
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
Wouldn’t you have ended up driving through the baseball sized hail anyways? Or were you close to your exit?
Shirkaday@reddit
There was baseball sized hail? Where?
OutrageousQuantity12@reddit
In the section of 45 where OP got stuck apparently
Shirkaday@reddit
Oh dang. My fault for not fully reading the post. That’s crazy.
DKE3522@reddit
I guess we need under bridge cams to bust these idiots but it will be considered unconstitutional
Wife came home yesterday complaining about this it's stupid
syzygialchaos@reddit
Take pics and video, submit to cops and your insurance company if you get damage. Not sure what else you can do if you’re stuck, other than just watch the weather and avoid highways when they say there’s a chance of large hail
animalhappiness@reddit
This is definitely totally the appropriate channel to raise this complaint too, so like definitely be on the lookout for improved service in the future.
paralleliverse@reddit
Lol I just want you to see the downvotes. This sub clearly doesn't agree with your attitude.
Shirkaday@reddit
This is by far the craziest sub I frequent when it comes to weird downvotes and pile-ons. People get downvoted to hell for simply stating true facts in completely neutral way, or simply having an opposing opinion.
u/animalhappiness is not wrong!
ShadowZNF@reddit
What’s the word on this, isn’t it better to pull over than to cruise through it at 85? Had not been in this situation. Makes sense if it’s small and just starting, but plowing through the big stuff doesn’t seem like a good idea?
paralleliverse@reddit
Yeah this is super illegal and dangerous. Anyone who does this deserves consequences.
tacoscholar@reddit (OP)
Is there no other option than fully stopped or 85?
ShadowZNF@reddit
I thought that was the Texas way? Generally discarding the license plate is part of the process too?
AbductedByMJ@reddit
I just print new ones personally
MethanyJones@reddit
I wipe my backside with the paper plate. It’s green. Well, depends what I ate.
Unpetits@reddit
Get off of the highway. You CANNOT park on the highway, move towards the exit slowly if you must and find a place.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
This is the best way, but also impossible to do if traffic can't flow, because a ton of people are already crammed under the overpass ahead of you. It also makes it impossible for emergency vehicles to move through.
I got stuck on 183 a few years back in a similar hail storm situation. I thought my windshield or sunroof were going to get broken. You were just sitting ducks, and this was potential tornado weather, where being in a car is the worst place to be. The only vehicles that could get off the highway were the 4x4s who could drive over the median to exit.
Unpetits@reddit
Oh no, you are incredibly right!I’m talking specifically to the people who think “eff everyone else I’m protecting my car under the overpass”. They need to know that they can very SIMPLY exit and find an alternate cover. These people are fearful drivers and make it worse for everyone else they are impeding.
That is awful to experience, the worst place to be in inclement weather is stuck in your car on the highway. People don’t really listen to the radio anymore, we need to find a widespread to get severe weather warnings and safety instructions to the majority of people who use streaming services. That’s my hot take out of this.
MilkmanResidue@reddit
You keep driving and exit the highway if you feel unsafe. It starts with people stopping under the bridge on the shoulders then very quickly turns to people stopping in the lanes in between. I’ve seen it happen and it is infuriating.
NietzscheRises@reddit
To bad the ones stopping on the actual highway don’t get plowed by a semi truck
zekesaltspider@reddit
“People who want to protect their car should literally die by a semitruck”
Unpetits@reddit
Protect your damn life and don’t park on the highway. Exit safely. Your car means nothing compared to your life.

ThatOneUpittyGuy@reddit
Buddy can you even vote? You barely out of high school.
AbductedByMJ@reddit
Is there a candidate I can vote for that will allow these people to be run over by a semi-truck? You don't have to keep selling me on it, I just need to know where I can find this person to immediately volunteer to campaign for them.
csonnich@reddit
I guess these days caring about public safety is a hot-button political issue.
Chazzybobo@reddit
Don’t you know trump supporters value property over people?
NietzscheRises@reddit
If they stop in the middle of an actual highway yes they are selfish asshats
sadisticamichaels@reddit
Not everyone shares your opinion. If it's hailing there is a good chance visibility is poor and the roads are wet.
Do you want hail damage or rear ended at 80mph while sitting still?
spacedman_spiff@reddit
Here, read this and educate yourself.
ShadowZNF@reddit
Good article, thanks!
Kyosuke-D@reddit
This shit happened to me 2 years ago. I was livid. My car got so much damage because of these selfish jack asses. Had everyone kept driving wouldn’t have gotten really any damage overall.
paralleliverse@reddit
Reminds me of a time when it was storming and I needed gas. It was GOING to hail but hadn't started yet. People were parked under the awning at the gas pumps, and refused to let me get gas, because their precious cars might get dents if it hailed. I literally couldn't make it home if I didn't get gas. I was furious.
zekesaltspider@reddit
If you have a luxury vehicle (or a custom license plate) I don’t see an issue with wanting to protect your valuable asset.
I recommend checking the weather app next time before going outside
noUsername563@reddit
This might be the most braindead, stupid fucking argument in favor of this I've ever seen
letsgetitstartedha@reddit
It’s an asset but cars are constantly depreciating and the license plates aren’t transferable currency lmao they’re just vanity plates. Definitely not a valuable asset lol
Prior-Ad8373@reddit
Take your own advise with your luxury vehicle and asset. If it's that precious don't drive it
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
You're blocking emergency vehicles and if it goes from hail to tornado, an overpass is the most dangerous place to be. Yet way to block traffic so no one can escape.
BrokeBoy2600@reddit
Isn't that why you get full coverage If you can afford a luxury car you can also afford good insurance
djrosen99@reddit
I moved to the area about 25 years ago and I was living in the HEB area at the time. I was not here but a couple of weeks when this happened to me and I was completely flabbergasted by this. I have never seen anything like it and cannot believe the collective dontgiveashitness of people.
virtualspecter@reddit
I exited onto the freeway bc the highway looked packed. This dickhead truck driver on my left suddenly swerved into the middle lane and I had to slam my brakes to avoid a collision.
He did this because people were taking shelter under an overpass from the hail storm and he wanted in. He wasn't even fully in the center lane and I wasn't trying to wait or contribute to blocking the freeway off so I drove between him and the car on the right and guess what
It wasn't hailing past the overpass
94Trooperman@reddit
It was ridiculously small hail and over in minutes. If you drive a 35 year old car with 325K on it and hail damage that's older than many of the drivers pulling this stunt, it's amazing how little you worry about it. I did, however, manage to squeeze through the single lane out of 4 that was left open with my left hand out the window saluting the idiots.
dard12@reddit
There wasn't baseball sized hail in the DFW area.
JonasTwenty@reddit
What the hell is wrong with you
3stricksURout@reddit
*hail
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Let me guess, they all thought they could get under the overpass.
