Does anyone else ignore internet celebrity (specifically music) like my parents ignored artists that gained fame in the MTV era?

As I (we) age I reflect on patterns. My adult son can’t believe I haven’t heard of (insert unknown name here) given their level of “popularity”. I gave up active participation in socials about 6 years ago, do listen to the radio, and “cut the cord” in like 03, but still have a big blind spot. I don’t feel bad about it. Am I one step closer to being a curmudgeon?

I have a general aversion to watching videos of people with their face filling the frame and speaking directly into the camera anyway, so I sure as hell don't want to watch an ad like that. Unfortunately, a lot of advertisers today are pushing commercials that mimic that look with fake Tik-Tok looking videos complete with terrible audio, awful lighting, obnoxious acting, quick cuts between words, and a bunch of shitty icons and text popping up all over the screen. Kill me now.

I keep up with current music. Ever year I find a new act or two that I like (even an old heterosexual fart like me likes Chappell Roan, maybe because she's a young curmudgeon and really upsets the far right with her queerness). I love how Dolly Parton likes to work with newcomers to the music world too. I wish the Kardashians' 15 min...years...of fame would end NOW. I hate (un)reality TV with a passion. I do follow some folks on YouTube. I'm one of those ASMR weirdos and have been since I was a child (without knowing it was a thing). I like watching mystery box unboxing because they're usually garbage and the reactions to said garbage is pretty hilarious. I can't recall buying anything a traditional influencer has promoted, so they're not influencing me at all. I've lost count of how many pretty college girl influencers thought they could make their career out of YT, and TikTok, and Instagram, only for them to fade out eventually and have to \*gasp\* get normie jobs. What's even sadder are the tween and teen girls who so desperately want to believe in the fantasy. I'm glad I'm not of this current generation. TikTok can go die in a fire.

I'm there, too, mostly. I stopped paying attention to new music probably in the mid 2000s aside from groups or artists I already liked - but even then I'm sour on some of them. I mostly listen to classic rock stuff. I sometimes catch wind of weird things on youtube, so I am a little familiar with some of those jabronis. I have a huge blind spot on current stuff too. One of the weird things I've picked up over the past few years is an occasional interest in pop music, of which I have had little interest in since the early MTV days, and even then it was just a casual listener. I find that I am digging early 2000s pop more often, even some of the teeny boppy UK stuff like McFly sometimes. ***Even more so,*** over the past 4 years or so, I've gotten way into KPOP - maybe as a side effect of being into kdramas and such and for some reason it lodged in my brain - so I am weirdly current on that. No idea why THAT has stuck with me.

I read an article several years ago (that I really wish I could find again) which said that most people nope out of new music at around age 32 and pretty much just stick to what they already like from that point on. For me, that was 2005, and it's pretty accurate. There's maybe a dozen bands/artists that have come up after that that I liked enough to become a true fan, where I'll buy their albums and/or see them live.

But I have no idea how they got there nor do I particularly care. But in general Idngaf about influencers. If they stay in their lane and talk about what they know, then all the best to them. That's interesting. At 30, I spent at least an hour almost every day, with my children, listening to every band we could find on YouTube that we'd not heard before. We went through yhe NPR Tiny Desk concerts, Paste, and a bunch of others whose channel names I don't remember. We started doing this for a few weeks every year or so, and now at almost 48, I have at least as many "new" bands as pre-30 bands. I still listen to music I've heard since in the womb! But I really love music; it's therapy for me, and gives me a sense of home, even the new stuff.

You’ve got to listen to more. Skip the insipid pop, but find something. Example: I like Rush. This past year someone told me Alex Lifeson has a project called Envy of None. No defined style. Everything seems to be “hey, let’s do this because it will be fun”. And I like it. Last year someone turned me in to the wonderful world of niche Scandinavian metal. I watched people knit to it at some festival and laughed while enjoying the tune. Then I found Tarja and Floor Jansen’s siren like voices in the operatic metal genre (Nightwish was fronted by both of them) and love that blend of amazing, trained voices and a metal beat. I just listened to the new Hot 8 Brass Band album…some great New Orleans Brass Band covers of songs you will recognize on it along with new works you won’t. Don’t have to like these bands, but get out and listen to something. It is always fun finding new music.

The internet celebrity and almost all of the popular grammy level type of artists suck. There is however a pretty damn golden age of music happening down the food chain. There are phenomenal artists in about any sub sub genre you can think of out their actively making and playing music if you seek them out. You just have to avoid all of the generated playlists and platforms which are geared to drive you to the industry products and actually look for music and artists. I.e. on spotify you can go down a rabbit hole of similar artists to things you like and find bands with much much smaller followings who are doing great things. There are non spotify tools that do similar things where you can put in bands it will lead you to all kinds of musically related bands that are unique.

No, I've actively sought new music since I was 30 because I found my discography stale. Also, my children were young and I wanted something new for all of us. We lived where winter is 9 months long and music was, and still is, an every day experience. I don't seek celebrities, but I never have. I don't know most of them from my own youth. I am a curious and creative person, and though this last couple of years I've had little time or energy for it, my yt subscriptions are widely varied, but mostly pretty niche. I have no idea if any of those channels are famous, but they do represent a wide range of ages too. I have been annoyed that I haven't learned more languages though, because I wish my "collection" of subscriptions included more ethnic and cultural diversity. I do watch yt vids with my Gen Z children though. Right now they're watching Doug Doug, and we put Markiplier on while I do their haircuts/trims. My daughter and I watch several equestrian channels together and we watched EmmyMade for years but stopped after the c-19 lockdowns. We watch Caroline Winkler since then. We all watch Ryan George together. All this said, overall, I probably watch one video/week. And it's my children's choice, so i rarely watch the ones in my own list- probably one every few months. It's just from exhaustion and lack of time, not disinterest. I feel old, but I'm not even close to a curmudgeon.

I don't think I've ever seen an influencer or celebrity in my reddit subs, unless it's like here, in the comments, mentioned as a response. I do occasionally watch yt channels, but I have no idea if they're famous; they're pretty niche.

Good music died somewhere around 2000. Maybe 2005. I don’t know who most of the popular artists are right now because there’s not much good music out there. Movies are mostly dull. I know a few of the newer actors but again nothing too exciting. Luckily there’s still a good movie here and there but I find most of the “popular” young actors to be meh.

Oh my goodness yes. celebrities need to be HUGE and have to have been around for at least several years before I'm likely to have any idea who they are. I know there are Kardashians, but I couldn't tell you who they were if you showed me a picture. Although, I work in music, so I am a bit more likely to hear about a famous musician than I am of people in other fields. And if I hear of them, I am more than likely to take a quick listen to hear if it's anything I might be interested in. I can appreciate some of them, particularly from a record production POV, but mostly it's not music that does anything for me.

I find the whole thing bizarre. I think about the term “influencer” and wonder how many people realize its meaning. Are you going to be a free thinker or willingly influenced? Too many people mindlessly allow others to determine their thinking process to the point where they don’t have to think, just go see what your favorite influencer says about whatever and adopt that without giving it any discerning consideration. If I am influenced to change a perspective or buy a product, it won’t be because an influencer said to do it. Life is about learning. Being influenced is simply following without learning.

I would believe that but I've been on this sub long enough to know there are a lot of cable watchers and that means commercials. My opinion of commercials is lower than low. It's brainwashing, really. The repetition helps. I refuse to deal with commercials unless I can't avoid it, like a Superbowl party. That said I've gotten into fb reels lately. The first two weeks I thought they were marvelous. I learned about crazy cooks and their reaction viewers, brood mares, dogs, and philosophy from a 27 year old. Now I've expanded my video interests with more humor and politics. There is only one who stealth sells stuff: she never gives a bad review, which is annoying because she's a reviewer, but her and her husband are adorable so I'll allow it. OP, you might like Garth Beauregard: he likes to rank 80s/90s grunge metal music but I've also seen videos of his in which he says something like if you like Disturbed you might like this [new band]. Other than that the same 4 songs play as background music in reels. I learned who Docchie is but that's about it.

I’ve talked to my son about this. There is a very popular fishing based you tuber (very popular) who has started skewing his content toward camping and outdoorsmanship. I love his fishing stuff, and he’s exceptional at it, but the forays into the other areas are so off base and often are bad / poor practices. One of the beautiful things about the internet is artists of all kinds can show their passion without needing a middleman. It means more music is being made, more experimental stuff gets put out and yes, there's a lot of crap but there's also some amazing things happening. My adult sons keep me in the loop. I'm always down to discovering new music. But I do remember my most "get off my lawn" moment. My younger son wanted me to listen to Yung Lean when he first started uploading music (he was a teenager, at the time, in Sweden releasing music on YouTube and SoundCloud. I HATED it and said it wasn't rap, period. And my son called me out on my stubbornness and eventually I had to conclude that these new SoundCloud bands and artists are legit, even if it's not my cup of tea.

Most newer music sounds like elevator music to me. Even the rap is extra boring. That’s why I no longer follow what we called pop music I do find great new music though using services like Spotify, where I can play an old song I like and then it will automatically play newer songs or acts that have some similarities. All the streaming services have this great option and a great way to find new material that suits you

I genx and work in IT and as much as I embraced internet culture in the late 90s and early 2000s I never got into youtube personalities, podcasters, or streamers. It all quickly changed from people who had something genuinely interesting to discuss or some niche interests someone was happy to expand upon to content for content's sake. As soon as an internet personality opens any video with "What's up guys, today-" I immediately lose interest.

I checked out of radio and "current" music 10 years ago. Pandora 60s, 70s, and 80s is my go to for music. Sometimes 90s alternative. Internet/twitch streamers can make a lot of money just by views and sponsorships. There are some solid commentary people out there, from gen x law commentary about various current cases to gen z cozy gamer people.

I think you’re missing out on a lot of hip hop if you’re lumping a short lived mumble rap trend from almost 10 years ago with all modern hip hop. I mean Kendrick Lamar is a huge point to make on that. But beyond that there’s been Vic Mensa, Lupe Fiasco, Chance the Rapper (although he pretty much fell off after Coloring Book), J. Cole, Kid Cudi and a bunch more that are really really good.

I remember standing in a line at a grocery store and looking at all those magazines (cue Kiss song). I didn't have a clue who most (nearly all) of the "celebrities" were. IMO the Internet celebrities (aka influencers) are very cliquish, and niche; you're either in that interest circle or you don't care. Good for them for making some money and/or fame, but don't expect it to last. I hope they save any money they earn. I for a moment watched Michelle Phan (Rice Bunny) on YouTube. She landed a cosmetics deal and travelled to my area on the companies dime. I randomly mentioned her to my niece (early teen) around that time, she know who Michelle Phan was. Still "famous"? I don't think so. Successful, yes, I believe so. Best of both world's IMO. IMO MTV/Much Music didn't make people famous. Although I do remember my great uncle (born 1930s?) saying "We used to listen to music, not watch it."

Social media only plays a part in my interest in music insofar as its one of the only places to get news about releases. I'm not too influenced by "Buzz" because I don't listen to music that creates a "buzz." I don't pay attention to "influencers" all that much. I don't use Twitter, I have an IG that I don't really use, I don't use discord or twitch. I watch some YouTube videos, but it isn't typical personalities having opinions. The creators make topical videos about politics, world events, money, etc, but I honestly could only name Simon Whistler, and he doesn't even really write the stuff; he's just a narrator.

Ehhh, first of all, there's only so much attention to go around. Once upon a time, you only had to keep up with a handful of channels worth of entertainment, Top 40 music, and whatever your specific areas of interest were. Now, though? It's basically infinite content. There are now hundreds of cable channels, dozens of streaming services, limitless music platforms, endless YouTube channels, and limitless other social media personalities...there's simply no way to pay attention to it all. Add to that that we have actual lives, jobs, and families that all demand time and mental energy. Beyond that, the VAST majority of these internet 'celebrities' are famous for being vacuous, loud, outrageous, and nonsensical, and the odds are that no one with a fully-formed prefrontal cortex is going to be interested. As long as you're not simply saying "no one makes anything good anymore" about literally all media and entertainment, you're probably fine. In today's over-saturated and always-connected world, you're probably just tuning out noise, and are wise to do so.

If we're talking bands or musicians I'm pretty plugged in there. My high school daughter and I exchange music suggestions all the time and while we don't have exactly the same tastes, we both have broad enough interests that it overlaps a lot. If we're talking about social media and YouTube people I am pretty much out of the loop there. I do follow some gaming streamers but nobody that anyone would reasonably expect anyone to know about. I don't even follow the biggest ones, and 50% of them I follow just to keep my ear tuned to French speaking so I don't lose it completely. Ultimately, there's so much out there that I don't even think of it as being in touch or out of touch. It's really more like if you're into something, there are people out there that you can tune into. You aren't necessarily out of touch, you just aren't into their thing. Podcasts, socials, Youtube, etc.

Yes. I ignore most of this crap. Not because I'm old but primarily because most of these folks lack substance in what they're producing. There's no redeeming value or anything that gives hope for the future. Their persona tends to gain traction whenever they're arguing or fighting with someone or making a fool of themselves. And in the midst of all of this foolishness, they're perpetually teetering on the edge of being "cancelled". One day my niece can think that a particular celebrity is the best thing since sliced bread. And then 2 weeks later she gets mad at anyone who mentions them. It's one thing to lose interest or to fall out of love with an idol. But the fact that they just "switch" on someone overnight simply because someone else that they admire decides that they don't like that person anymore. When the Bill Cosby thing surfaced, a lot of us were disappointed but those fans of our generation made a conscious and thoughtful assessment of whether or not we wanted to continue to be fans. We didn't just go with the trend without finding out all of the facts.

I learn about new music mostly from Peloton. I don’t really listen to regular radio, so I don’t hear a lot of the new songs and artists the way we did back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. I learned about Doecii when I read who was nominated for Grammys (and I love her!!). So - I guess I find new music in different ways than I did in, say, the 80s and 90s, but it’s out there and not hard to find.

Fellow curmudgeon here... I couldn't name a single Taylor Swift song and don't even recognize them when they come on the radio. The whole "swifty" thing is weird to me. While I may rock out to a few specific current musicians, the bulk of my playlists come from the 70's to early 00's and now I know why my dad never got away from the 50's; there's just something comfortable and sentimental about the music we grew up with. The biggest difference is that while I never got into his 50's stuff (and he didn't like "my" music), my kids (GenZers) are now and always have been absolutely obsessed with 90's Alternative and I deeply love that. My 17-year even told me he'd been rocking out to Queen on the way home from school yesterday. I think that proves our generation grew up with the best music.

Wet Leg is awesome, I'll have to check out Maggie Rogers. Do you listen to Sofi Tukker? Sofi Tukker and Wet Leg were on heavy rotation for me for a road trip 2 years ago. Chappell Roan is really hit and miss for me, she's got some great pop songs that remind me of GaGa and then some ballady stuff I just can't get into. I wouldn't consider any of these musicians internet celebrities though. Even if they jumped into popularity from their music videos, they are legit, release albums, and tour constantly.

I think internet celebrities and modern musicians/bands are two separate categories. I don't follow influencers or TikTok stars at all, but I do try to keep up on current musicians, and the nature of the industry has changed now that their music may blow up online before they put out their first album.

If my kids think it's important enough to tell me about an influencer or the students I teach feel the same then I'll look them up. But otherwise I just do things my way. I generally get recommendations of veritaseum or kurzgesagt videos from them.
