Where to live in or near Plano

Hi everyone! I’m a recent graduate who might be moving to Plano in the summer for a job. I’m coming from New England, so I’m used to a walkable life and I know I’ll need a car in Plano, but I just want to ask if there’s any apartment complexes you would recommend for a young person who enjoys being able to walk to shops, parks, and bars. I’m looking for a luxury apartment with great reviews, maintenance, management, pools, fitness center, etc that’s close by car in traffic to Legacy West (close to my job) and is a fun area with lots to do (but with thick walls to not hear the busy streets). Money isn’t an issue so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

I know I'm a little late, but I recommend The Place at Harvesttree and Legacy North.
killer-j86@reddit
Its an older community. Families and older professionals. If you're young Id find something in the surrounding area.
Ravioverlord@reddit
Idk why you are being downvoted, I was the youngest person in grocery stores that wasn't a teen working a day job. My brother still works in a Plano store and 95% of the customers are retired or people with kids. It is not a young person's city.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Young people don't spend much time at the grocery store, so it's not a representative sample. Go to Trader Joes. Lots of college kids and young people there. The ones near UTD are packed with young people.
Ravioverlord@reddit
Of course they don't but they need to shop and my brother who works there says he never sees young people shopping. Idk why you have to discredit my experience on both this and the rats xD it seems like a weird hill to die on.
Great that the one by utd has more but I'm talking about a specific area of Plano and again, my experience.

Frisco, Richardson or north Dallas area
FabulousBullfrog9610@reddit
Kincaid at Legacy has a mix of younger and older residents. 2 pools and walkable to both Legacy West and the other legacies. the apts actually in Legacy West are a little newer but aren't high rises. I prefer high rise. Plano is full of rats. Just saying.
Plano is not New England and it never will be. I know!!!
Vegetable_Aerie9223@reddit (OP)
New England is full of rats too haha, thanks for the input!
Ravioverlord@reddit
Just fyi the rats here are not the same. I'm from the PNW and lived city center a lot of my life, we had the usual city rats. Big and slow. Here in TX I've only seen roof rats and they are worse mainly because they are fast and can chew through anything. Our Xmas lights were all ruined last year we were in Plano and now in Frisco.
I also wouldn't feel safe on a bike anywhere in Plano personally. Or really DFW. I don't drive and hoped to keep biking here but it just isn't feasible. Nor is walking unless a store is right below your complex because blocks are not the smaller normal city size. Some I've lived on here are a mile long before you hit a new street.
I'm curious why you are picking here? Is it a job or something? This, Plano especially, is not a city of young people or walking/biking. There aren't even cross walks often as needed. It is more for people with kids who drive everywhere and I was bored to death there personally.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Squirrels chew the christmas lights, not rats. And bunnies. They are right at mouth level and both like to chew, and extremely common in neighborhoods.
Ravioverlord@reddit
We have a video camera and it was rats. So sure others might but roof rats have def done it more. We don't have squirrels in our area very much compared to the rats. Was likely both though.
FabulousBullfrog9610@reddit
i had no idea. we didn't have any issues when I grew up there!!! good luck. I hope you love it here

Just plan on a car unless you live close to a dart station. Even then you will need a car. This is not a walkable city by any means
Vegetable_Aerie9223@reddit (OP)
Yeah I’m planning on a car. I just want to also have the option of walking to places (not to work but cafes and shops). Know any areas like that? I heard downtown Plano and Addison circle but I don’t know how it’s like to really live there.
basylica@reddit
I cant think of anywhere really walkable in dfw. Even if the distance is reasonable, there isnt the infrastructure for walking. And if that doesnt deter you, the 100+ temp 6 months of the year will.
All of DFW is designed to be car friendly even for 1/2 mile distances.
Even the outdoor shopping plazas are designed to be driven between. You can walk of course, but you will be dodging cars and sidewalks are blocked etc.
Its pretty nutty
TexasReallyDoesSuck@reddit
dallas is walkable. the suburbs aren't.
AggressiveInitial630@reddit
I wouldn't want to live in downtown Plano (or more specifically I wouldn't want my early 20s niece living there). There are apartments and condos on Parkwood & Legacy that are walkable to Shops but yeah, this is not a walkable place or a nice/pleasant place to walk. We came here from CT/NY and I miss that greatly here. You may want to try google maps for that area. From the exterior they look well maintained and I see a lot of people walking dogs around there. Another cross street would be Bishop and Legacy, look towards Mexican Sugar (restaurant) and you'll see them.
Addison is a weird little town if you ask me. We looked at buying there, but it was just... weird, I can't put a finger on it. Like you're in North Dallas, blink and you're in Addison, then bam you're in Plano.
Vegetable_Aerie9223@reddit (OP)
Hi! When you say that it isn’t a pleasant place to walk, are you referring to Downtown or Legacy? And is Addison weird as in the people have a weird vibe, it’s boring, or unsafe? Thx
yesitsyourmom@reddit
Love Addison! A lot more options for food and activities than downtown Plano
Lurcher99@reddit
Yea, there is more walkable food options, but Plano is nice. Can you tell me why specifically you don't like it? Yes, this is a "ethnicity diverse" area, but a train station is also right there to get you around.
AggressiveInitial630@reddit
u/Lurcher99 ? not sure what you mean about ethnicity diverse or where exactly - I'm guessing you mean downtown? I don't know about the demographics so I can't comment on that specifically, but regardless, ethnicity wouldn't figure into a location preference for me personally.
DART is fine but pretty useless for getting around other than going to the state fair or downtown Dallas - you will need to get an uber from DART to most locations at least in my experience. Maybe we go to different places, but I think everyone can agree that Plano is very evidently anti-public transit and the city council is actively trying to defund it, so I wouldn't hold out hope on any improvements, unfortunately.
I like DT Plano for dinner/nights out, but it's just such a small area to me. It's like a few city blocks of things to do and then you're just going to hop on 75 to go somewhere else. The rent and parking doesn't have enough return for me to recommend it to my niece who is 22 and moving here in August. That's all. *shrug*
Lurcher99@reddit
I meant, it was mostly Hispanic until the train came in and gentrification started. Yes, I'm not the young demographic anymore and was hoping to actually live in DT when I moved back a few weeks ago. Couldn't find a decent place so, move up to Legacy. Train is important as I work DT Dallas. Access to many places along the way is good, but it's DFW, and you will always have last mile problems. Plano will always be NIMBY. I'm actually surprised to see the silver line is getting done.
Vegetable_Aerie9223@reddit (OP)
Cool! Is it a fun place for people in their early twenties?
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Downtown Plano, Addison Circle, and Legacy West itself are all perfectly safe places to live and walk. The main problem is they are all disconnected, surrounded by highways and sprawl, and very small, so you might get burnt out doing the same things.
Legacy West is pretty busy on the weekends, kind of a proximal version of a busy city.
AggressiveInitial630@reddit
From a crime perspective I'd say pretty much Collin County in total is safe for walking - it's getting hit by a car that I worry about personally and I'm just used to walking in an actual city rather than a multi-use area that was built 10 years or so ago (depending on the area). It's a different feel - you don't really meander here, like you would in a city. You walk to a destination here. There's a difference in the vibe but I don't know how to explain it.
AggressiveInitial630@reddit
I meant TX in general, not any specific location for walking. Generally people are distracted drivers who speed and the roads are wide which is hard when you are a pedestrian. Like every street is at least the width of Park or Lex in NY but with a 45mph or higher speed. Boston is very walkable as an example, but a complete cluster for driving and/or parking. Flip the narrow curving roads for flat, straight and wide (and, yes, fun to drive!) and that's the primary difference.
Addison - we almost bought a house there when we were looking. It was okay but it is a really small town. It's literally 4.5 square miles and they have (or had) 14 cops. There is one hub area and that's the end of it and then you have to drive elsewhere for things to do. Benefit - it's close to Galleria mall, it's a good location/compromise between Dallas and Plano. If I were in my 20s/early 30s I'd feel like I had one foot in one city and one foot in another. YMMV.
Lurcher99@reddit
Dig into Google maps, that will help.
Lurcher99@reddit
DT Plano is a fun area. I live two miles away and have spent time there. If you are looking at renting, really need to see them in person. I just went through most of the non-apartment units myself 😁

Thousand Oaks at Austin Ranch is where I’m at and it’s great. Moved here about a year ago fresh out of college and it’s right in the middle of everything

The Cityline area in Richardson (just south of Plano) is walkable to Whole Foods, restaurants, and a great park. Close to Dart as well
Hopelessgirl14@reddit
Frisco by the Star! We love that area and it’s near legacy west as well
TexasLiz1@reddit
There are several apartment communities right in Legacy West.
tom_sawyer_mom@reddit
The Legacy West/Shops at Legacy area has the highest concentration of young single professionals in Plano. I think you’ll be happy living there.
_Auck@reddit
That doesn't exist in Plano. Texas. Oil state. Gasoline. Buy a car, looser. That's Texas.
Vegetable_Aerie9223@reddit (OP)
Bro what? I already said I was getting a car. Lighten up

MuscleFlex_Bear@reddit
Addison near belt line and the toll road is probably something you’re looking for. It’s got a huge area of restaurants, movie theater etc. but you definitely need a car
briancmoses@reddit
I suggest hiring a realtor and getting used to driving.
killersticky@reddit
Legacy West is the best area in Plano for walk-ability. I would also check out CityLine in Richardson. There's like 5 apartment complexes right there that you could choose from. CityLine is mostly younger crowd too.
ZeRussian@reddit
Based on OP’s post history, they are an actuary, so most likely working at Liberty Mutual at Legacy West. I would not want to commute from City Line to Legacy West. Tolls will add up really quick and driving through Plano skipping tolls is about 45 min commute each way.
killersticky@reddit
I think the pros of living in a cheaper, more desirable area can make up for some toll prices especially if the drive is only 20 minutes when you pay tolls. Just depends what each person values. Wanted to throw out another option.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
CityLine has less stuff and fewer events than Legacy West.
ZeRussian@reddit
Fair point. It also doesn’t sound like OP has a car and while they will be getting one, I’m just thinking how a newish driver will feel on the autobahn for the first time.
peacelovetacos247@reddit
Check out Flat Iron district or Thousand Oaks at Austin Ranch.
ImGish@reddit
I grew up as a young professional here. Now I'm married now with kids and live around Addison and generally would not recommend it. It's way more spread out and the crowd is older. So cross that off your list.
There are realistically 2 viable options that meet your criteria.
1) The shops of legacy & Legacy west. They are separated by a highway, but super walkable. There will be young people here, but will be more of a mixed crowd in terms of age. This was my personal choice in my 20s as I liked the proximity to work w/the nice amenities and social scene.
2) The other option would be Uptown in Dallas. This will have a much stronger cohort of people your age and more social. I'd assume that most of your peers at the job will be living in Uptown, so you'd have maybe some built in social network if you just stay down there. Any apartment close to McKinney Avenue in uptown will be fine. Check out Gables Turtle creek cityplace or any apartment building around that, which will put you in the center of the action. Driving to work will be kind of annoying depending when you are coming/going, but you'll be against the flow of traffic, so it's not too bad most days, maybe 30ish minutes.
Good luck! It's a great place to be a young professional.

Cortland West Plano and the apartments surrounding it are walking distance from Walmart, Sams club, a couple of fast food places, and like one or two bars. I’d say it’s an okay balance or options unlike something like Legacy West where the apartments would only be close to bars and places to eat.
itchysweatersdaw@reddit
Any apartments near legacy west are good.
BusPilledTrainMaxx0r@reddit
Well there is legacy west itself that has a lot going on. I work near there too and while it is decently lively, it's rather sterile and corporate. Other side of DNT there's old legacy that is more authentic.
You could also move to Addison circle and take the bus into legacy west like I do.
Note: Plano is currently very hostile to public transit and are trying to kill it, so take that into account when picking a location
