It doesn't have to be rational or make sense, but never underestimate the sheer length, scale and complete cold-heartedness some former friends and supposed family will go to get money from you if they think you have a lot and there's a chance of getting some. And there's no way of knowing ahead of time who that would be. It's just as likely to be the "he's a shifty one, watch out for them" person as it is to be the "they'd never do that, I know them too well" person.

You're right, but I value mental peace. I'm connected with quite a few colleagues outside of work and I would prefer to leave with everything in order. I'm of an age where I could retire, and while it would be early, it wouldn't be completely implausible. To just quit, and not explain why, would create a lot of questions, would leave people in a bit of a hole, but would probably also require terminating at least a dozen friendships. I'd spend the three months tying up the loose ends and leave knowing that I'd done the right thing, rather than coming into money and immediately behaving selfishly.

Yeah, I'm an NHS admin and work in a great team. I know how hard it is to have a colleague down from sickness or even leave. And I really value what I do for the team's operations as a whole. So I wouldn't want to just leave them in it all of a sudden, and use the time to let it sink in and plan out my next steps.

I don’t think it would feel like work knowing you could leave at any time and you’re just finishing things off. I’d basically just do the stuff I want to do and say no to anything else, and spend a lot of time making plans and thinking things through rather than rushing off to spend a load of money. Would probably be good for me to take that breathing room and relax a bit. No point confirming big plans until work is finished so four weeks of breathing room living my same life to work out what I want to do

I dont hate my job like many do, so just the anticipation and planning for that notice period would be awesome. Things you think are a good idea now may not be immediately afterwards. I really get on with my coworkers, but I don't dream of labour. When I've spoken to people that have a genuine passion about their work, they still wouldn't do that job if they didn't need to. If money was no object they'd often choose to volunteer where their skills were most needed. I know a lot of Vets for example, very passionate people who love working with animals. Given half an opportunity they'd quit the Vet life and volunteer helping animals around the world.

I think the point being made is that by resigning immediately, you leave your team and colleagues completely in the lurch without any handover, process change, or even the ability to manage your workload effectively and it causes a ton of problems and stresses for them. Sure if your notice is 3 months then by all means say "I'm only working 1 month of my notice, just FYI" but if you like and get on with your colleagues, you're really throwing them a ton of problems by resigning with absolute immediate effect. Let's put it this way: You have your whole life to enjoy a crazy sum of money. I'm sure you can take the month to ensure that those you're leaving behind and worked with aren't negatively impacted by your sudden departure.

I’m not meaning to keep working indefinitely, but 4 weeks to breathe, get financial advice and work out a cover story would probably be a good idea. I’d skip work for any meetings with the financial advisor and be looking at houses and holidays at the same time but it would be easier to leave with a bit of cover story that doesn’t have people wondering where I’ve gone. In both cases, my employer would go on - but it would be months at least before someone was up to speed up enough to do my job poorly and a lot longer to do it well. This has been brought up to them in the past, but they've not done a lot about it. It does mean I pretty much do the hours I want though! I don't avoid buses for their sake, but for mine. To answer the original question - I'd convert to part time. I have products I've worked on for years, and feel quite a bit of ownership. I still occasionally hear questions about software I built 15 years ago going on to new platforms...

Over the years they moved around the business, got promoted etc untill they had people as heads of departments in marketing oops, compliance directors, senior finance, account manager etc One of them going could be replaced, all of them at once would cripple a business. It was actually written into the BCDR plans and regularly updated to mitigate for precisely this risk

My company are great people, and they have looked after me amazingly over the almost 15 years I've worked for them. When I needed 2 weeks off to go home for my brother's funeral during our busiest period ever, they simply said "take all the time you need". When I had depression they said "take all the time you need". Heck, when my cat died they let me take time off as compassionate leave even though that's totally not what our company policy and the law say. It's rare, but some companies do the right thing by people, so I would do the right thing by them, because they've earned that level of respect

I read somewhere that when you win, the lottery people help you set up a private bank account, which takes about two weeks. Once that's set up, it takes another 48 hours for the money to be put into the account. So I'd wait until then before I handed my notice in. If anyone asks, I'm setting up my own company. I figure enough time will have passed that noone would connect the dots and realise that I was the winner. Then I'd quietly work my month's notice period, change my LinkedIn profile to my new fake job, then disappear.

I would want as few people as humanly possible to know I'd won, and I started a new job recently, a job I have been after for a while and that people _know_ I have been after for a while. I've also worked at the place I'm at over 20 years and I like most of the people I work with and enjoy my job. If I just vanished or did something it would raise suspicions I don't want. I'd do 2-3 years, while I set my new life up in the background, buying a new house, doing it up to my requirements, sorting out everything so when I do finish I can drop straight in to my new life, quietly resign for 'a job in another organisation' and walk away, no questions asked.

I think in threads like this that people often forget this side at times; that some people genuinely have a job doing what they want to do that they've spent years to a decade or more getting in position to take that they don't just want to instantly drop, especially if they've only recently started and haven't had time to either prove themselves there or even just to not have had the initial enthusiasm tarnished by the crap sides of the role. Obviously I'm not talking about fairly generic admin type jobs here (and no shade on those, that's the broad label mine would fall under), but to come to with just a couple of examples you'll have people who are working on a frontier in science or other academic subject in a field they find fascinating - money alone can't buy your positions there, though can of course help with being choosier with no more scrabbling for rent/mortgage payments.

If it actually happened then quite likely - but there are enough horror stories about what happens to people who let too many people now right away, you can't undo the knowledge once it's out there. That said, there are ways with my work that could massively reduce how long I'd need to be there ie book a fortnight and a day off (which would definitely get approved) for 3-4 weeks away, then right after hand in notice and as the time left before the leave is less than the leave they can't cancel it (not that that would matter as a hundred millionaire, but for keeping up the appearance of just having had enough). I only work 9 days in 10 so likely would only have to do 8 days. But, on the other hand, if it was a glorious spring day like today then the first boring call could well see me just say fuck it and I'd be off.

Hopefully I'd hold it together for a month so I could be seen to work my notice and just leave - my main reason for this being that once/if people twig that you've got a huge lottery win you can never make it a secret again. Because you *are* legally required to work your notice period. The consequences for not doing so are minor though. You can be sued if the company can demonstrate they were harmed by you not working it. It's usually not worth the company doing that, so it almost never happens. I like my role, the company and the team but when it comes to massive sums of money, the safest thing is to never reveal it. Resign. Let my manager know it's a significant family situation that means I won't be able to work in 2 weeks time and that I understand it breaks my employment agreement when it comes to pay (because why quibble over the 3 month notice?) Spend the last two week setting up what I need to make it a smooth off ramping as possible for them all so they can start recruitment ASAP. Short goodbyes on the last day with the team of other colleagues - no leaving do. Done. If I didn't enjoy working with the people and the org, then resignation letter on the day. Same reason but make it clear I won't be working at X time that day.

He stood up, said he's got to go, and just left. Laptop still on the table, just up and walked out. Never came back, and never answered the phone to work again. Company are obviously concerned, ask police to do a welfare check. Maybe he's being bribed or something serious, or family are in trouble. Most of us don't understand how wealth works. £100m would give you around £450,000 a month income on around 4-5% interest. You'd never spend the initial money. You could quit and compensate the company ( unless public service or faceless large company) and still be wildly ahead. Buy shiny stuff? Why? Just rent it until you're bored. Give family money? Of course not. I teach so I’d stick out the rest of the year. Watch the kids lose their heads when I turn up in a McLaren one day. I would actually have to do something, I couldn’t just sit at home all day. Do the last weeks in the knowledge that you never have to work again and you will be free to do whatever you want. Hear me out, but I love delayed gratification. I also respect my boss and most of the people in my team too, so I would stay on for another month as I KT what I do and how I do it to someone else, knowing that in a few weeks time, I won't be getting up to work anymore. That whole month feeling of not giving a shit, denying peoples meetings and not responding to 'urgent' requests will feel so much better than just not turning up the next day. Add onto the fact that I've handed things over will just make me feel I've done what I can given that I didn't have to.

Not sure if I would. I think I'd go nuts if I had nothing to do day after day. It's possible I'd leave my current job for something I would enjoy. Pay would no longer be an issue so it could just be some part time gig doing something interesting/fun. I hope I'd remain humble in such a circumstance too. I'd pay off the mortgage in one swoop, give some money to close family and in-laws, stick a ton in saving accounts and try my hand at investing. Fun money would be on travel. Travel to all the places. See all the things.

Besides, I wouldn't know what to do with myself, so leaving on bad terms by walking out of the door would cause reputational damage and would hinder me if I were to later set up a company, social enterprise or charity working in that arena.

I’ve got a fairly unique job, or at least a fairly unusual set of experiences that make me suited for it. I was also in the happy position of having just rage quit my last job when I saw it, they had tried to fill the role for over two years before they hired me. It also a job that I enjoy, and I do think is important. I think I would stay there for at least a year to hand over my major projects, although I’d definitely go down to 50% time pretty much straight away!

So many people say they would carry on working, or they would resign. There’s a lot to deal with when you come into a large amount of money and work will just distract you. You’re not going back. I have always wanted to do it this way. I would continue to work until something very stupid was announced in public. Then I would sigh and say: "You know, there comes a time when one cannot put up with the inane bullshit this place spews." I'd get up and walk out and that would be that.

I'd cut my hours down but I would still work just to continue having work history and skills. But I would also look for jobs I'm more passionate about (but unfortunately pay way less). I'd like to do something relaxing and more enjoyable, and if I was a millionaire, I could really take a step back from work life. I still think it's important to continue working for having a work history if you ever need to get back into work in the future though.

I would use up all my sick days and leave time until I've got the money physically accessible to me. Once confirmed and available I would quit without notice and Im sure any employer would understand this situation. Unless of course I was a GM or CEO then the story would be much different.

I’d probably not quit. You need something in your life to make it interesting. Also demonstrating a work ethic to your children is worthwhile. Now I’d probably upgrade my work experience. Better plane seats, hotels, tech. Then over time work out where the job and interests align and move towards those parts of working. Eg sustainability can be a corporate function and also an interest in supporting the planet.

I'd hand in my notice as normal and work it which is three weeks for me. Boring I know but my company looked after us with extra payments to help us with our energy bills a few years ago, gave us a double bonus when we exceeded our sales targets last year. They also restructured the wage rise to be more beneficial to lower earners. Yeah, I get it that I'm still just a number but I'd do the decent thing. Three weeks is no biggie.

I'd just hand in my resignation which is 3 months, sure if something came up during those 3 months I'd just go but it's unlikely. You shouldn't make quick decisions when it comes to sudden life changes so the 3 months would give me time to think about what I wanted to do with all the money

I would just hand my notice in ,I wouldn’t tell anyone I’ve won anything just make up some shite about a new job or a career break ect. Once I’ve left I’ll get in contact with my mates from work and sort them all out on the quite. Pay their mortgage off ect. The euro millions is such a huge amount of money. I could help so many people and still be left with so much.

im probably not at least till id finished my current main project. i like my work, im good at things and enjoy doing them but i still for some reason do better with something to drive me and give me a little structure. if i didnt have something id likely slide into some very unhealthy or dangerous patterns pretty quick. ive said it before, unless i was really careful having a large amount of cash would be the death of me in pretty short order
