Lucy Lawless says she and Renee O'Connor is down for either a reboot or a sequel. They're just waiting for a writer to show up, just like us!

I've always thought animation would be the way to bring back Xena.
They can't realistically expect Lucy at 51 to do the same stunts, and let's face it the success of such a show would need to have the same type of action scenes.
As animation they can create Xena again in peak condition, while Lucy and renee lend their voices.
circuit-maker@reddit
If you take care of yourself, as she clearly has done, 50's ain't old at all. Maybe not stunts everyday as in a grueling episodic TV series, but she could totes rock a movie...
PaleontologistSad766@reddit
Why not, Tom Cruise is f** ancient, and insufferable.
I bet that they could both get in shape and kick ass.
SnooSuggestions9830@reddit
Well for one Lucy says she doesnt want to in the clip (only for a movie).
Agent8699@reddit
Flawless Lawless does do some stunt work on MLIM. It would simply mean a greater use of stunt doubles - something that is highly likely to happen anyway as studios are way more concerned about their “stars” being injured during production than they were when Xena was originally filmed.
I mean, they had Lawless doing her own fire breathing stunts for the first two (?) seasons?! Who would be allowed to do that these days, other than Tom Cruise?
Or they could actually lean into it and have Xena complaining about not being able to flip and bicycle kick and tornado around like she used to.
Stingrea51@reddit
I don't recall the name of the film, but Xena's main stunt double is the headliner
Lucy plays her neighbor and I think they had a silly tongue in cheek stunt of Lucy's character falling over a couch or doing her own little stunts
Agent8699@reddit
Zoe Bell.
Joethesamurai@reddit
I feel the same. It could more easily retain its tonal zaniness that way too. I'm just afraid a live action reboot would take more ques from Game of Thrones than Xena and that's not what I want. Animation doesn't have to fill anyone's shoes either.
CheersToLive@reddit
I have my fear they would make it into another cashgrab lgbt show, like Agatha All-Along, because they refuse to write a good material to make up for the expensive film cost. A Game of Throne Xena would be fantastic, I don't see the problem with that.
Personally if they go the animation route, they would make Xena too childish for my taste. Like She-Ra.
cataclytsm@reddit
Why is it that transphobic dinks are the only people who ever bitch about this
CheersToLive@reddit
The only people that complains about this?? Have you been alive the past 5 years? And what's transphobic this time, saying there are many shows that use lgbt characters as a plot device but refuse to write good queer stories? Ofc it's weirdos like you who'd surf through people's profile over a disagreement. Fucking creep.
Nipplasia2@reddit
No please no cartoons
bbofpotidaea@reddit
Animation could definitely be a cool way to explore new Xena stories, but I don’t think it has to be the only way. The idea that a successful revival must have the same type of action scenes feels limiting. Xena isn’t just about stunts. Her strength, leadership, and relationship with Gabrielle were just as central to heart of the show.
Also, why do we assume a 57-year-old woman can’t still carry an action role when male actors do it all the time? Keanu Reeves is pushing 60 and still leading John Wick, Harrison Ford just played Indiana Jones again at 80, and Tom Cruise is out here doing stunts well into his 60s. If Hollywood can choreograph and adapt action for older male leads, they can absolutely do it for Lucy Lawless.
Lucy doesn’t need to be flipping through the air like she did in the ’90s to be a badass warrior. There are so many ways to tell a compelling, action-filled story that acknowledges time has passed while still honoring what made the show great. I’d rather see a version that embraces where Lucy and Renee are now than one that tries to trap them in their past
only_norj@reddit
She 56
SnooSuggestions9830@reddit
This clip is 5 years old??
only_norj@reddit
I agree that an animation, even just a one-off movie, would be a good way to bring it back even just to correct that horrible finale. It would have to be much better quality than Battle for Mount Olympus, as that was terrible.
SnooSuggestions9830@reddit
There were a few terrible ones where the scale was just laughably off but they did the best they could I guess.
Helen of Troy episode comes to mind.
badfortheenvironment@reddit
Yes please. Get the cast back to voice it and I'm in.
kodamisterbear@reddit
They can definitely pull off an animation or a full-on PS5 computer game. I'd love that!
FirebirdWriter@reddit
Well... Who do I drop my fanfic on to get the job?
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
I don't think pitching is enough, becoming their head-writers would be a full-time job. Unless you're still up for it, you'll have to contact NBC headquarter.
FirebirdWriter@reddit
Yeah I admit I couldn't do that part medically but if they were ever open to reasonable accomodations? I would be very good at it since I am a professional.
aangita@reddit
I want to watch My Life is Murder! I hope they license it stateside soon
ermy_shadowlurker@reddit
Sequel pass the torch to someone worthy to carry it
PaleontologistSad766@reddit
I also think they could direct a fabulous reboot with a new cast.
aqueladaniela@reddit
Pls no reboot and no remake. We want a revival or sequel 🙏🏼🙌🏼
godsibi@reddit
Mate, I don't understand why they don't do an animated midquel/sequel already. Just have 10 or so animated adventures with the original cast voicing and the original writers penning the script. The visuals can range from anime to realistic nowadays!
cataclytsm@reddit
I think the crew they had doing Blue-eyed Samurai would be pretty perfect for a modern take/sequel/whatever on Xena's world.
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
Omg, blue-eyed style Xena would be fucking badass!
wafflehabitsquad@reddit
Lets fucking go
ShondaVanda@reddit
Honestly, they don't need to hand it off to the next generation. They just need to fix the ending.
Do a one off Xena movie, bring her back, maybe send them back in time to during the gap so we can see the old characters again and do the ending properly. If you want to also use it to do a backdoor pilot for a new franchise, fine, but fix the Xena ending.
RiversSecondWife@reddit
What are the Batwoman writers up to? Let’s go!
SortovaGoldfish@reddit
I mean... We as a collective have to be within the top 10 collections of Xena minds. We all got key boards. What's to stop us?
Xenaslittleb@reddit
Why can’t we get an epic open world rpg on ps5. Voices of the original characters, epic cutscenes! Think red dead redemption ii but….Argo
Fearless_Volume7450@reddit
Best show ever , we need a movie too
resumeita@reddit
Ok this made my day ♥️
KaidaStorm@reddit
Honestly, if they do live action again, I could see them doing a starting episode where they get xena back, but in doing so... they have to change bodies (this getting new actors but being the same story)
Otherwise, I agree with others, animated would be the best way.
ChampionshipKey979@reddit
Nah keep your woke ass retired
StarrE1@reddit
It would be cool to have them be the age they are now. You know, still in the Xena timeline, but reminiscing about their past… Just saying I think that would be a better story. Have Gabriel use all of gods power that was leftover to bring Xena back. Tell how they lived out their lives in a changing world. How everything affected their perspectives. Just saying I’d be interested in watching. 🤷
Annazon_864@reddit
Someone call Melissa Good! Stat!!!
flynnigan14@reddit
Melissa would be the only option for this, for sure!!!
flynnigan14@reddit
She and Renee said that at the most recent convention as well. They would absolutely come back for Xena.
NiceRefrigerator4079@reddit
We want sequel, not remake/reboot!
HausCat4@reddit
Would love to see Katherine Fugate or Melissa Good write a movie to properly tie up the show. Lucy as Xena and Renee as Gabrielle. They can still do it 😊
Katherine and Rob had a script! Let’s do it!!
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
Has Katherine Fugate release that movie script somewhere publicly or no?
Agent8699@reddit
No. There was no “script”. There was no money, so Fugate wasn’t going to spend months writing a script without being paid.
Fugate wrote a basic outline / beat sheet to be used by Tapert when pitching the film to possible investors.
Way back when, Fugate offered a copy of the outline / beat sheet as a prize / reward when she was fundraising for Elizabeth Warren. For some reason, that document has never (to my knowledge) been shared online by anyone who received it. I don’t know why that is - perhaps Fugate asked them not to share it?
I would love to see it. At the time, being an Aussie, I didn’t contribute to the fundraising, but I wish I had now. I tried reaching out to Fugate previously offering to donate money to her chosen cause to obtain a copy, but she never responded.
All we know is what she’s said - Gabrielle would resurrect Xena in Egypt to battle some baddie. And they would kiss - unequivocally romantically at least once in the film.
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
Since Tapert had plans after s6 finale, it's good to know xena's death was just a farce to get a sequel movie deal where the lovers finally reunite. Still sad it never pull through.
Agent8699@reddit
I don’t think that’s technically correct. Tapert publicly stated that he considered his time with Xena to be over and killing her off in such a definitive way was almost his way of smashing the toys so no other kids could play with them.
Then, potentially due to fan … backlash / demand after FIN, he eventually reconsidered his position and was open to producing a Xena movie - perhaps because he wanted to expand beyond his product company’s more horror-centric offerings.
He did put in what appears to be a lot of time and effort to get a Xena movie made. It just didn’t happen.
There’s also all the behind the scenes dramas and legalities with the intellectual property rights in the Xena: Warrior Princess brand which was subject to dispute between Tapert and NBC Universal (or whatever the company was at the time). That was eventually sorted out to the extent that Tapert could pursue a movie with their involvement / approval.
bbofpotidaea@reddit
I don’t care that they’re in their 50s now. I would watch every second of new content with an open mind and, like, fierce optimism and gratitude.
Their worth as characters and actressses is not dependent on their age and physicality. That narrative strikes me as misogynistic. Their legacy deserves to continue while we still have these beloved actresses here on earth with us. Why shut down the opportunity because they are older and MAYBE less able-bodied than they were 30 years ago.
What I wouldn’t give for Lucy Lawless to reprise her role as Xena Warrior Princess!! In whatever capacity she would agree to. And if that means she never has to do another fight scene, I will gladly watch her do literally anything else.
If all they did was sit in a bathtub and talk about the weather I would still thank the gods for one more blessed minute with EVELYN RENEE O’CONNOR as the freaking battling bard of potidaea y’all!!
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
I don't think it's just the age they're worrying about, but the production moneys, and how successful that show/film would give back to the borrowed money. This is the usual fear in art making business, the money spent might not means money back.
bbofpotidaea@reddit
I hear ya and I don’t disagree, I just think it’s a misogynistic take overall to promote male action stars well into their 80s but write off Lucy and Ren because they’re older women
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
What year was this?
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
2021 or 2022 I believe, whichever year after My Life is Murder s1 was released.
Tricky_Direction_897@reddit
Thanks!
yaoigay@reddit
That's amazing, NBC needs to give them a chance. They could do an animated sequel if the stunts would be too much for Lucy and Renee.
BurstTheGravity@reddit
Omg I didn’t realize Lucy is so young and how close in age I am with her since I grew up watching Xena.
DuchessSwan@reddit
i would love anything that would bring them back!!!
Flicksterea@reddit
Gabrielle was heading towards Eygpt. If that wasn't a perfect setting to bring Xena back, nothing is. Book of the Dead in Gabrielle's hands? Fighting the Egyptian gods and goddesses to get Xena back? Totally plausible.
But I agree, first and foremost a good writer needs to be found. Craig Mazin is free in a few years...
myusernameisabore@reddit
Yes plz! With technology today, it would be amazing to see!
olorin818@reddit
I’d love it, but after seeing rebooted X-Files I m sceptical. Wouldn’t mind retelling with Lucy and Renee in cameo
