Grown-up adults of Britain, what time do you go to bed and get up?

Posted by goodassjournalist@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 632 comments

I’m 42 and a parent. I go to bed at 10 and wake up at 7. I lost track of time tonight like a renegade.

I'm usually in bed by 9 (and asleep not long after) and I get up at 5.45ish for work. I don't enjoy getting up so early, but I don't function without a few hours waking up time before work!

Go to bed between 10pm and midnight. Wake up screaming around 3am. Very occasionally go back to sleep until 6am.

If I'm on a good sleep schedule I'll be in bed by 22:30 and up by 06:30. I don't feel like a proper grown-up but I think I fake it better than most people so I'll take that as a sign I'm as close to being a proper adult as I'll ever get.

I go to bed at anywhere between 9 and 10pm, read some shit on the Internet with my reading mode light on for around an hour, then straight to bobbos. I wake up around 7am. Im dull, and I love my sleep. Research suggests I'll die before night owls.

None taken thank you for asking ! Yes I workout to help with my adhd as I don’t take medication. But sometimes when I’m hyper focused on something or really enjoying it I won’t stop and go to sleep. Or if my head is so over loaded (I have like 20 thoughts going from when I wake up to when I sleep in my head it doesn’t turn off) it won’t turn off when I go to sleep. This happened last night I was awake until 6am on Reddit because for 2 hours I just lay there not falling asleep.

Oh man that does sound bad. I have occasional bouts of insomnia but not as bad as that. Hope you figure out your sleep patterns! Advice I’ve been given that does work, but I struggle to stick to sometimes- if you can’t sleep you’re better getting up and doing something rather than just lying in bed

View on Reddit #51933408

I struggle so much with this myself. I just stay up too late when I've got things on my mind, or feel like I've not done enough in the day.
View on Reddit #51932506

gregd303@reddit

I get that too. If I've not done enough with my day then I'm not going to lie in bed and (maybe ) sleep , when I have another 3- 4 hours, and I'm wide awake. It's my time for learning , reading, playing guitar (headphones ), watching interesting TV docs etc . Going to bed early is usually a waste of time for me. It only benefits if you're an early riser, and then do all those activities in the morning , but my body and mind just isn't wired for it. And believe me, I've tried.

View on Reddit #51930607

english_hillbilly@reddit

Or maybe the threat of getting fired for not actually putting in the hours working from home might get people back in the office. Just be honest, no one is working as hard when the boss can't be looking over your shoulder. You said it yourself, you log on for work then spend a hour getting showered dressed and drinking coffee. You probably then have a 2 hour lunch while logged on then down tools at 3 then finally log out at 6 for a bit of overtime. I'm just making a point and not actually saying you do this although logging on then showering/dressing raises and eyebrow. I do personally know a few people that WFH and they really do take the piss so I am very much against it, it's not good for the companies bottom line paying full time wages when half the workforce are working part time. There is a huge industry of products designed to trick the computer so it looks like people are at the keyboard when they are having a pub lunch or buggered off down the allotment for 3 hours, these products wouldn't exist if people WFH weren't using them.
View on Reddit #51958829

Terrible-Prior732@reddit

"no one is working as hard when the boss can't be looking over your shoulder" is quite the sweeping generalisation.
View on Reddit #51981405

Sorry_Astronaut@reddit

I don’t take an hour to shower and make a coffee, it’s maybe 15 mins. When I worked in office jobs I’d get there at 9, then make a coffee, say hi to everyone, and faff around at my desk. I actually do more work at home and am far more efficient. Previously, if I had five pieces of work to do that day, I’d make them last eight hours because there was no benefit to finishing them early when I couldn’t just leave. Now, I can often get them done by 2, maybe 3, or stay at my desk til 5 and do some extra bits from the next day to allow me to do the food shop, etc. I probably take 30 mins for lunch so I can crack on and finish up before 5, whereas in the office you bet I’d use every minute of my lunch break. And I’ve never been paid overtime in jobs I’ve worked so I’m not logging on after 5 to wangle that either. I’m sure some people take the piss but from every office job I’ve ever worked, those people exist anywhere. The average person working from home is doing their job in a way that preserves mental and physical health far more than possible in an office.

View on Reddit #51949797

Sorry_Astronaut@reddit

I work harder than I have at any other job, always get everything done and also have a good work/life balance. That time I used to make hot drinks, take long toilet breaks and chat to others around the office? It’s now used to make better lunches, get chores done so my evening is free and take breaks to exercise and not stare at a screen. I’m arguably less lazy than before, where I’d make my work last eight hours then come home and slob on the sofa exhausted.
View on Reddit #51958547

Cabbagecatss@reddit

Good for you🤣, I think most people me included are kinda jealous and bitter, and I think saying you get up at 1 min to 9 and log on doesn’t really help, then you go for a shower? Shouldn’t you be sat there working not showering? I have plenty of internet points to survive the downvoting that all you lazy WFH people will dole out 😘
View on Reddit #51958750

Sorry_Astronaut@reddit

When I worked in offices I’d get in at 9 and faff around making coffee, catching up with colleagues etc in the time I now shower. It’s not always the way, sometimes I’m up at 8.30, but the flexibility is great and doesn’t impact my work at all. I make those 15 mins up at lunch easily when I rarely take more than 30 mins, whereas in the office I’d be out for the full hour. I’m sure there are some lazy people but I’ve seen tonnes of them in offices too.

I tend to change with the seasons, the earlier the sun comes up, the earlier I wake up. It means during the winter I just want to sleep and stay in bed, but I'm the summer I'll hardly sleep. I guess there is some balance! Generally though, if all things are equal, it doesn't matter what time I get to bed, if I wake up at 7:30 or later, no problem. The earlier it is before 7:30 it gets, the more tired out I am for the day. It's a curse I say! Curse!

There comes a point in your life where you realise trying to get an early night is futile. There are odd exceptions, if I've been working a lot that week and it's built up fatigue, or if I've done a shit load of physical activity that day. Generally, however, an early night is just punishment as you lie in bed while the frustration builds. It doesn't matter what the clock says, there is no point in me even being in the bed if I'm not tired yet.

50M 3am sleep time , wake at 11am is my ideal and my internal clock kind of works that way. Work for myself and no set hours apart from occasional morning meetings .noise wakes me up ..5am risers why do you have to let the world know you're awake?! Since being a parent the past years my timings are more out of whack with night time wakings and early mornings. I'd like to change my sleep schedule to more regular, but if I do get an early night usually it's a broken and poor quality sleep, and I end up with less than if I just went to bed as usual, and I'm a moody zombie all day.

When I have my kid, I get up at 6 and therefore try to go to bed at 10. Realistically I am falling asleep at more like 11-12 though. When I don’t have my kid, my perfect sleepy time is 2-10 a.m. (I’m freelance, so in theory I can sleep whenever I want). I try to go to bed earlier, usually 12-1, so as not to get too out of sync for my weeks with the childbeast. In which case I’m getting up 8-9 ish. One thing I’ve discovered is I seem to function best on either 10 hours or 4 hours of sleep, either is fine, but if I get precisely 7 hours, I feel like shit! I think I’m being woken up at exactly the wrong part of my sleep cycle 😵‍💫

In bed by about 8am, up at about 2pm. Nights are 9:30-6.30 (sometimes 9:30-8:00!). Yes, it's all over the place. Done this for 11 years.

Go to bed between 10 and 11, usually asleep no later than 11. Sometimes I'll go to bed earlier if I'm knackered or just fancy a longer rest. I get up at 6 on office days and sometime between 6 and 7 for WFH days. Less than 6hrs sleep isn't great, but more than 8hrs is a bit much for a weekday as I can feel zonked out afterwards, so somewhere around the 7hr mark seems to hit the spot for me. At the weekend I won't usually set an alarm if I have no reason for it. From time to time I sleep 8-9hrs and just spend the rest of the day flopping about, which is kind of nice. But I often wake up after 7hrs either way. It's like my body thinks this is enough now. I have no problem listening to that. The most important thing for my sleep schedule has always been consistency. It doesn't really matter to me or my sleep quality if I go to bed at 9, 10, midnight or 2am, as long as I get the right number of hours of sleep and don't move my bedtime or getting up time back and forth all the time. I don't think I'm either an A or B person in that sense. But the way my current job is, I do have to be up quite early - so I've adjusted to that with a slightly early bedtime. It works for me.

Late twenties male, have had periods in my life where I was very regimented in terms of going to sleep early and waking up early, like when I was in the army or working in landscape architecture. However naturally I seem to be a night owl, always ended up staying up very late on holidays/weekends. Currently I’m studying at uni as I decided to go back to school and study what I’m passionate in which, especially during assignment periods, has completely wrecked any semblance of regimental sleep. Currently up quite late and sleep in till early afternoon. I have a part time job in the evenings which doesn’t help matters

If I don't have an appointment I don't get up before 9.30am. Even then I potter around in my dressing gown drinking coffee until I'm ready to face the world.
