Never cease to wonder at the robots

I love these little guys, seeing them trundle around the Redways.
With DPD starting to use them, the Redways will be like some sort of futuristic world we could have only imagined a few years ago.
SomeoneBritish@reddit
I’m still in awe at how they have not been destroyed by some yobs.
Queasy-Obligation-29@reddit
Mk isn't really known to be that sketchy...
underbutler@reddit
Pick them up and then balance them on a brick. Non destructive and annoying
Naive-Chip5442@reddit
They most likely have a 360 camera view or sumn so nobody wants to be caught doing something as stupid as that lol
verdantcow@reddit
That wouldn’t have stopped most kids just cover your face.
Thing would probably have had a few goes around the skatepark on its first day where I live
Astral_Brain_Pirate@reddit
How many yobs are there in MK?
Acid_Monster@reddit
Tonnes
wearetrashbirds@reddit
Well swastikas in the multi story carparks. Religious fanatics and a serious violence and misplaced anger issue. The yob population is quite high the UN declares the yob population of Milton keynes of least concern. Still not recommended to feed them or pet them even if they approach you initially
Astral_Brain_Pirate@reddit
Surely swastikas in car parks are like dicks on the walls of toilet stalls; an inevitability of widely shared public spaces.
That is surprising, though. I kind of assumed it was just well-to-do young professionals because (no offence) who else would decide to move there? What is there in MK for the disenfranchised and ideologically radicalised? It's arguably the most neutral town in England.
abovetopsecret1@reddit
You never went to serpentine court then? Or any of the housing blocks near the centre…?
wearetrashbirds@reddit
Maybe but with less of a rapey vibe and more of a murder harassment vibe
Weirdly no. So yes popular for young professionals bit also alot of people born in MK that have no space for them because of various reasons and a lack of options for anything that dosent cost money. There's a Catholic school that encourages extreme Christian views to the point that they're very clearly perpetuating a certain mentality. Like mk on the outside or moving there as an adult is not too bad but growing up is a very different and darker story. It has a serious issue with drugs(McDonald's in the shopping centre and xacapenhave had drug overdoses I have witnessed to the point the one in the escape put blue lights in the disabled toilets to prevent people shooting uo there) misogyny(local person very well known ans popular person in skater community was a serial rapist) and economic disparity (nothing is less than a fiver to sit down and be wam in majority of places) it's very deceptive for its general aesthetic. I remember one time I remember a homeless guy went to a McDonald's for a cup of water so they gave them boiling water in a paper cup is the best example I can give for the type of place
CantBelieveImHereRn@reddit
people always downvote anything that doesnt cast mk in a good light but issues like this are important and need to be voiced, yurning a blind eye is one thing but if you put people down for being honest about this stuff youre a part of the problem
abovetopsecret1@reddit
A lot!
-DoctorSpaceman-@reddit
When they first started up it happened a couple of times, getting tipped over or pushed into hedges. I think the novelty wore off quick though
DigitalDroid2024@reddit
The End Times are upon us.
The portent of such witchcraft and devilry foretold by Nostradamus.
bibipbapbap@reddit
How much do they cost to use?
pnn100@reddit (OP)
I'm not sure but just a delivery charge, think they are called Starship?? I'm sure someone else may know hopefully
Deformedpye@reddit
It does say the name on the side of it in the picture.
Santik--Lingo@reddit
stupid little robot fucker id tip one over and spit on it and call it names
OnceIWasStraight@reddit
you should watch "Lapsis"
BrickTilt@reddit
We had these in Leeds a couple of years ago and we still talk about them when driving through the area they covered. Not there now, was a pilot I think. Lovely little things
Projiuk@reddit
They are epic, always good to see them out and about
Al_Greenhaze@reddit
Do they go on pavements? What happens with crossing roads etc? Is it autonomous?
Just wondered if you knew.
Zs93@reddit
Yes they do. When they approach a crossing they slowdown and they can sense vehicles coming so they’ll stop. They’ll also go around you if you block their way. I love them!
-DoctorSpaceman-@reddit
I’ve stood in the way before and it said “excuse me”
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Really? I've never heard them speak but that makes them even better and polite!! Love that
YourSkatingHobbit@reddit
My best mate righted one that had fallen off a kerb and gotten stuck diagonally on the edge, and it said ‘thank you for helping me’ in a very pleasant voice before trundling on. He was unnerved and yet also uplifted lol.
Al_Greenhaze@reddit
That's very cool. I'm looking forward to drones delivering stuff too.
ManOfNamalsk@reddit
I moved here recently and first saw one rolling through a park near Great Linford, and more recently on a path there that runs parallel to the canal. Some pretty out there routes they have but I like it, it's almost like they're enjoying the countryside.
MadChart@reddit
I have never seen one. But the description makes me think of Brum
pnn100@reddit (OP)
I love the thought of them taking the scenic route for a bit of country air 😊
Cow_Launcher@reddit
Like through Linford Wood...
murr0c@reddit
These are from an Estonian company called Starship founded by some of the folks who created Skype. They are all over the place in Tallinn.
Nervous_Book_4375@reddit
In the future there are giant versions of these used by skynet. They find a human settlement, fall over on their side and huge bioengineered groceries crush the humans beneath.
AdministrationHour93@reddit
Tbh, These bots ride better than human drivers in MK!
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Oh yes I completely agree there. Courteous, watch the road, careful
Stunning_Delay1164@reddit
Can't imagine they hold much? Maybe a meal deal but not a week's shopping.
pnn100@reddit (OP)
We got an emergency bottle of wine at Christmas 🍷. We needed to do verification to prove we were 18, ended up on a video call to prove it 😊
Stunning_Delay1164@reddit
Emergency bottle of wine sounds intriguing.
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Yes I think I'm sharing there 😊
Unknockable@reddit
They’re cute
pnn100@reddit (OP)
They really are
wiewiorowicz@reddit
I love them. People can't believe we have robots delivering groceries, it's so futuristic. I hope the business is doing well and they will stay and expand.
pnn100@reddit (OP)
I'm 53 but it gives me that childhood wonder. This is what we were sold as the future when we were kids along with flying cars 😊
pronoobmage@reddit
My kids are lovin these. We always have to stop and observe them as long as we can see them... 😅
pnn100@reddit (OP)
That's so good, it is some sort of futuristic magic
WaterMittGas@reddit
If some one turns them upside down, what happens?
pnn100@reddit (OP)
I hope people feel sorry for them and turn them back, fingers crossed 🤞
ze7vigga@reddit
I wouldn’t want my packages being delivered in these, maybe if I lived in Finland or somewhere where there aren’t desperate tramps.
vivalaalice@reddit
I love them so much, they thank you if you help them when they’re stuck and it makes me so emptional
fingu@reddit
So happy they're still going. If they become unprofitable I will be the first to set up a GoFundMe, just so they can keep making me smile on my lunchtime walks
niallw1997@reddit
Definitely see a lot less now. Used to be everywhere during Covid (understandably)
IndefiniteLouse@reddit
I work near the dpd depot, and they seem to be trialling some new ones that have locker style doors, presumably for multi drop routes
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Oh are they bigger than the ones in my pic?
IndefiniteLouse@reddit
Yup! Not my video, but they’re like this
https://youtu.be/HHSOWUbFpu0
DiscoSkrtel@reddit
Bigger and somehow camper
WetCalamari@reddit
One nearly tripped me up while on the bike. Still love the little buggers
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Even when they are bad they are good 👍
Impossible_Head_9797@reddit
My favourite thing is if they get stuck, and you help them, they say "thank you"
FulchJ@reddit
Shame they hit cars 🤷♂️
nubianfx@reddit
i find them so adorable.. ive definitely in my mind equated them to little cute dogs or something.
pnn100@reddit (OP)
100% they are cute robots with a calm and steady personality- in my mind at least!
Classic_Peasant@reddit
Bloody love them, always help if they get stuck!
pnn100@reddit (OP)
Ah I've never seen one stuck although I see them struggle a bit on bin day!
CottontailTheBun@reddit
If my cat saw one of these he’d end up locked in some dpd delivery depot
Aggravating-Snow-784@reddit
They are brillian, but sadly don’t support our side of the City since Tesco stopped using them.
i run MKGN, we had a talk from Starship a couple of years back. Fascinating. People think that the robots are likely to be attacked or vandalise, but the opposite is true with people going out of their way to help them if stuck.
They are remarkably autonomou, but where a crossing is tricky or there is an issue a human can take over. The humans are in Estonia 🤯
dilithium-dreamer@reddit
I love these. I think they should be painted like little bumblebees or other little animals.
They're delightful enough as it is trundling around fulfilling their life's purpose or waiting outside the Co-op ready for their next mission, but that would make them even more wonderful.
Mike-101616@reddit
I remember when they were first introduced. It took them ages for the robots AI to get things around. They would take 5 mins to cross a tiny parking pass area. And always go on the right side of the paths. But then they had an update so they now go on the left of the pathways.
Chelsea2021972@reddit
They use them in kempston in Bedford too!!
sarsar69@reddit
Oh I do miss them in my area, but greedy Tesco's wanted a bit of action, so they invented Whoosh! They don't get that we loved the robots, so we don't order now.
jderm1@reddit
I used to see them every time I was around Oakgrove, but never do anymore. Anyone know if they still operate around that area?
Frogsandmice@reddit
We want more in the Lakes area, near the new bit so we get Asda.
The_pan21@reddit
Used to see them in Wolverton all the time until Tescos pulled out. Now there is nothing within range 😡
MosIdiotDaimyo@reddit
I use them frequently to get stuff from Co-op, it's brilliant if I don't want extra human interaction that day.
