What are your thoughts on ‘optional’ service charges in restaurants?

I pretty much stopped eating out. Prices skyrocketed, portions and quality decreased and this service charge on top is simply an insult. Couple of months ago my partner and I went for tasting menu dinner at £200 pp. When we got the bill it was almost £500 because they added 2x 0.7 bottles of water (total of £40!) and service charge at 13.5%. Absolute joke. You would think that service and water for that price would be included but nope - still charged on top which I find very distasteful.  The service charge became a thing after pandemic and it’s been winding me up each time I went out, but now I simply stopped dining out because of that. It’s not like I can’t afford it - of course I can, but I don’t want to pay for someone’s service, because they already get paid for delivering it. If I go to a shop and shop assistant scans my products, they don’t add anything on top of my shopping bill, because that would be considered ludicrous. Yet restaurants think it’s completely fine. Well, I won’t entertain it and although I know I won’t change the world I do my part to fight the system by not going to restaurants anymore - „it’s not much, but it’s honest work”
