What are your thoughts on ‘optional’ service charges in restaurants?

It’s becoming ubiquitous. And I’m not a fan. We aren’t in the US. I believe it’s the restaurants job to pay staff, not the customer. I’m curious about: 1. What are your thoughts about it? 2. If you don’t like it, do you have the b*lls to ask for it to be removed, or do you become overwhelmed with British awkwardness and accept this newfound tax…? Thanks!
