Harv’s Air review

Hey guys. After much research and deliberation I’ve decided to go with Harv’s Air (Canada) for my full zero to hero training.
Is anyone currently there, or has recently left that can give me some insight as to what it’s like? The only impartial reviews on websites like reddit etc are years old and as I understand it, things can change quickly at flight schools with change in management and methodology.
Also I am slightly worried about ground school? In school I was always middle of the pack getting mainly B’s with a few A’s in there. My major concern is having to do mental maths whilst flying the plane, or on check rides being asked to do time distance speed calcs on the fly (pardon the pun).
Can you choose between which of the two schools you study and fly from or is that dictated to you by them?
What’s the social life like? It’s obviously not the main objective, but we all need a release. Also I’m British, so big into soccer. Are there any soccer clubs or leagues around Winnipeg?
Thanks guys, safe flying!

Do not stay in their accomodations long and try to find your own place. They are slum lords and their dorms and apartments are filled with rats and vermin. Do not rent their rental cars, they are mechanical nightmares.
Their maintenance is fine and up to standards.
Their instructors, mechanics, and office staff are overworked, overwhelmed, underpaid, understaffed, and under appreciated.
Their ownership (the penners) are rude, racist and homophobic. You are not their family you are a cash cow lining their pockets. They also tithe to a horrible mega church and give at minimum 20% of their business profits to said church to remain members there. Your money being spent at harvs is funding a mega chruch that preaches hateful values.

I am a former student of Harvs air and whatever is mentioned here is completely baseless. I did my commercial training with them and the owners plus the instructors truly care about you and your progress as a pilot. In fact I had a small concern when my original instructor left for holiday and Adam Penner was quick to sort it out. Shin regardless of not being my instructor was super helpful and even gave me free lessons just so I can improve(taught me about class-c intent and asked me questions related to my flight test oral). Whatever is being written here is not true. I don’t think there is any instructor at Harvs that just wants to rip you off for hours and not care. They have to report how a student is progressing to Abram or Shin which is then reported back to CFI Luke or Dy CFI Aaron. Someone saying that Harvs or Adam is rude is just baffling to me.

Would you care if the owner spent 10k+ a year on OF subscriptions? Or does your morality only stop or start at someone’s religion?
If it’s a shitty school with a racial and homophobic owner then that sucks and it’ll catch up to them— or it won’t, because, know, people already can’t find a place to train. So be it and don’t train where you don’t align, but you don’t get to dictate someone’s religion, beliefs, or spending.
By the way, shame on you for only coming here to dump your grievances because of a tragic accident today.

I would care if business owners were using funds from their business on drugs, gambling, OF, ect ect directly out of their business accounts preventing them giving their employees basic cost of living rasies and improving their very shitty and health hazardous dorms that they are charging an arm and a leg for you to live in. I care that they give a large sum of their earnings away, but get very pissed off when they have to replace furniture they provide to international students who are flying across the world to study in their institution.
Also, what tragic accident?

I wouldn’t recommend them. Despite the fact that their online ground school and fleet are fine the flight training is disgusting. Poor communication. Rude owners and management. The flight instructors are stressed and yelling on the students. Should you come up with any problem they will defend themselves rather than investigate and help you. They were decent 15 years ago. Now, they only interested in squeezing your money out especially if you are an international student. Avoid this rich family of Steinbach.

I was flying there with a friend two years ago. The air traffic controller cleared us to turn base and asked another pilot approaching from the opposite side to extend downwind. He turned base instead and we were on a direct collision course with one another. The heart attack the air traffic controller was having was palpable through the radio. Based on what's changed since I learned to fly there over a decade ago, it sounds like it's a license mill. It would be interesting to hear from the atcs that work the training airports. I bet they'd tell you that what happened today was only a matter of time and they were surprised that it didn't happen sooner.

Well this comment proved to be true this morning… RIP

This is nonsense. Not my experience at all. Excellent people and school. Best anywhere.

Hey mate thanks for the response. Did you learn to fly with them?

I don’t know how Harvs air is for flight training but I’m currently enrolled in their online ground school and I wouldn’t recommend it if you are someone who doesn’t retain information REALLY fast. I go for flight training at Near North Aviation near Hamilton and it’s fantastic

I wouldn’t recommend Harv’s air. Their ground school and fleet is good. But, the flight training doesn’t worth it. Poor customer service. No feedback. The owners and management are rude and unhelpful. They ignore your emails. Should you come up with a question or any issue they will defend themselves rather then investigate and assist. Flight instructors are always stressed and yell on the students. This was a decent flight school 15 years. Avoid this rich family of Steinbach. Only they interested is squeezing money out of you especially if you an international student.

Welcome to Manitoba! I didn't go to Harv's (I went across Apron II to the other flight school), but a little insight:
You'll be fine in ground school. It's high school level stuff. Nothing too complex.
For doing math in the plane, just practice on the ground and get good at it. There are also flight computers like the E6B you can use in flight. The only time you actually have to do it mentally (and not even that accurately) is on the Diversion exercise.
If you're referring to their Steinbach vs St Andrews locations, I believe you get to choose.
Yes. Valour FC is also the least expensive sports game to watch in the city.

Hey mate!
Thanks for your warm welcome! I am starting in July, I’m so excited to get out there and see what’s going on! What was your flight school like? Would you recommend it?
Harv’s do a in person ground school. I have heard it is really fast pace and hard to even take the info in - and therefore a bit of a waste of time and money. Would you recommend doing this or just self studying? I learn best from videos and practice tests btw.
Thanks mate 😄

Winnipeg Aviation was a good school. I found it to be a very friendly environment and my instructor was amazing. It felt like a mom-and-pop flight school, not some pilot mill. I haven't been there in 4 years, but if it's the same as when I was there, I would recommend it. I'm planning on going back in the autumn for my CPL once I'm out of the military.
I believe they also cater to international students, though I'm not sure to what extent.
As for ground school, I'm hard pressed to make a recommendation for which ground school to attend other than to do what you think will fit your plans and learning style best. In-person does move at a faster pace, but it has the advantage of getting it done quicker, and the instructional support is built in. Online might fit your learning style better, but it would require discipline on your part to complete it in a timely manner.

Not sure are you referring to Harv’s air’s online course or in person ground school. Their online course for PPL, CPL and IFR is fine, but way too much unnecessary info for IATRA and ATPL.
