I was nearly this person my first week of driving. I took an exit to a truck stop that had no way of getting back on the interstate and I didn’t know what to do so I blindly followed my gps through a small town with lots of height restrictions. I was shitting myself the whole time.
This is in Pittsburgh i live really close here
Even if i he made it through that steep hill he will be ripping off hanging wires up ahead and the turn to where he can exit would be really tough not only it is a busy T-intersection its also very narrow of a 65-footer truck.
How did I know this had PA all over it did many routes for food delivery out there, was so glad to get on a new route. When I had to go out there with new drivers that thought there phone gps was enough I wouldn’t go to sleep till they where on the express way. One time I fell asleep in the passenger seat to wake up on some steep ice dirt road with sharp turns and then still following there phone 🤦🏻♂️
so what do you guys use for directions anyway? is there an expensive trucker GPS that you guys pay for or do you use a mix of physical maps, phone/free GPS or what?
It's built on a pickup chassis with a pickup engine. If it wasn't the case then no one would be able to take their 1500, 2500, f 150, f 250 past those signs.
Unofficial versus official.
Officially its a car, like UPS box vehicles are officially package cars.
Unofficially it could be a UFO.
Trucks are essentially big rigs though.
This. I’d have a truck if it were as efficient as everything else. I know a lot of people use them for different purposes, but for every one person that uses their truck for what they are meant for, there is four people just using the truck for grocery runs and that is just ignorant on so many levels. I wish there were a good middle option here.
My problem is the 5 people using it as a daily driver compared to the 4 and 1. One of my coworkers bought a new model ram 2500 with the diesel option. He only drives it to and from his home.
Another of my coworkers has an older f150 ecoboost V6, which is a little more reasonable on fuel, but still not great.
You ever hear of a pickup truck? That's literally what an f-150 f-350 is classified as. Light duty trucks, is their class, not a car. Busses and tow rigs and some semi's are medium duty trucks, and things that move 100,000+ lbs are often called heavy duty trucks.
The same one they'd ask for if I was a farm owner driving a big rig in the state that I farm, barring a handful.
I drive a school bus with air brakes that I live in legally without a CDL. Even if it was still registered as a bus depending on your licensing state you could legally drive it without a CDL. You have to get commercial insurance, which is way more expensive, but a route a lot of people go because no insurance company wants to touch some dudes homebrew RV with a 10 foot pole lol.
Fun fact you chouldnt even propably drive a Silverado with normal passenger car driving lisense in my country. (if it has under 3500 kg maximum loaded weight you chould register it as passenger car but then it whould have much more expensive taxes. Thats because diesel powered passenger cars have different tax treatment than trucks in my country)
Prisons in California have signs reading “No warning shots” DAMHIKT. Those signs would stop you. If they didn’t the gunshot would. FWIW gunshots are heard surprisingly frequently, and in quick succession too (powpow powpowpowpow, pow pow pow). And as we learned earlier they are *not* warning shots. Each shot goes to a different “recipient.” Yep, prison is a scary place and for a *lot* of reasons.
That’s a typical HORRIBLE PLACEMENT of the No Trucks sign! The driver has absolutely no chance of seeing the sign before he has committed to the turn! If there are additional signs that he should have observed, approaching the intersection, then it’s totally on the driver. But we can’t tell that from this photo alone.
I’ve had guys at my work argue with me that the sign specifically means “No *BOX* Trucks” because “it doesn’t show a semi”
Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid
I have learned that there are many reasons for no truck signs. Once late at night, I didn't see the sign till I was already turning. I stopped, set my hazards, and busted out Google Street view. Didn't see anything at first that looked like it would be a problem (no small bridges, no low over passes, no narrow streets, no tight turns). But at the last second, just before I was about to say screw it, and go, I saw there were some really low power lines going across the road in the street view with a small sign stating low power lines. Garenteed, I would have not seen that in the middle of the night. So backed up and went around. The scary part was that my company GPS was wanting me to go that way.
Yep. June 6th according to my Google photos.
Had just dropped off my youngest at preschool and was heading back to start work. Guy had traffic coming the other way backed up a good bit in the morning rush.
Felt bad for the guy.
Same intersection had another one stuck a few weeks later. Someone else in our neighborhood had grabbed the pic of that one in our neighborhood FB group where I'd originally shared the pic in the OP here.
https://imgur.com/a/oFVkcxw
That hill is brutal. Coming down it toward the light at the intersection when the roads are questionable with Pittsburgh winter weather is for adrenaline junkies.
My gps routed me 15 miles away from the actual delivery in a major city and I ended up stopped on a hill not quite that steep at a red light. With only 26000 lbs I couldn’t get up the hill from a stop.
Set both brakes, directed traffic around me, backed down the hill a bit and was able to get up (only to find out I was not close to where I really wanted to be)
I learned something that day that I won’t forget.
It was the company gps. They just routed me to the completely wrong street vs what the address said.
I get goofy routing sometimes and thought that’s what this was. I had delivered to this customer in the same city but didn’t realize they had multiple locations.
And yes, this happened in Pittsburgh.
HA my Roehl company gps switched up on me yesterday and gave me a different route then the one given to me and the one I wrote down. I was like OHHHH NO buddy I know this game. Went the route I wrote down and the one the gps wanted me to do would’ve saved me time :(
Haha Pittsburgh is a city I couldn’t imagine hauling a load in with all the steep hills and narrow roads. Good on you for getting it there safe driver. Still my favorite city though 😊
Live near Pittsburgh, on you missed your turn, well that will now require you to go through 2 tunnels and cross 5 bridges because it’s only 1 way streets in these parts
Lol downtown is definitely a clusterfuck. I live in Wheeling so I’m not too close but close enough to enjoy it’s comforts haha. Moved from Southern California so it’s way calmer than that
I was in our dodge 2500, hauling a 10k skid steer. Read the work order address. Put it in, great 30 min from shop. Pulled up to a dead end road. They put the address in as Ave, not Dr. So now backing out this narrow road, cars on the side for over 1.5 miles.
I saw a side road, that will be my key to reroute. Back down, and it is what I imagine an 18 percent grade, as the trailer now is my engine, pulling me downhill. In neutral, and using all my brakes I could, went 3/4 mile down, finally got leveled.
The job I was to deliver was 20 minutes opposite the way I went from our shop. Almost 2 hours later, I got it delivered. Thats the north hills of Pittsburgh.
That’s why I don’t like GPS . For me it’s easier to write down the directions that I see on satellite images and follow that. My company directions led me down a residential street that didn’t even take me to the loading docks. Took me 2 hours to get out and reroute between all the “one way” streets and narrow intersections
Driver, I cannot disagree. The one and only time I used GPS was in 2006: it got me stuck on a RAIL YARD in Altoona, PA. Thank goodness for the hillbilly who towed me off (with a Dodge Ram!!). From then on, it was written directions and satellite view…
Yep! One time is one time too many. The first and last GPS I ever bought after it sent me the wrong way my first 6 months of driving. Fool me once shame on the GPS routing. Fool me twice shame on me.
I have a new Garmin and it’ll fuck your shit up if you aren’t reviewing your route. I wish there was an option to “avoid right turns in small towns” because it loves that shit. When I see it I check the Google street view imagery of the intersection to see if it’s doable or not.
Other than that you need to be very cautious about detours it wants to put you on to bypass traffic jams. It has tried to put me on no-truck roads on detours a few times.
I personally ignore any detours in around WV (with heavy loads) and a lot of the NE. Time saving detours don’t account for traffic lights and bullshit turns. 20 traffic lights on a detour would probably take more time than sitting in 30 min of traffic delays on a truck-friendly freeway it’s trying to put you around.
The Garmin should add 1 minute to the route per 2-3 traffic lights, or maybe more.
I'd never blindly take a detour if I didn't know the area. Always amazes me when there's an accident up ahead and some OTR trucks immediately take the first exit. You don't know what kind of fucked up route that can have you going through. I guess they just YOLO it.
Agreed! I don’t like that you can’t manually alter the route it provides. Example : take this highway instead of that one. If you can I haven’t figured out how
Naw lol. To verify the route with the tools that I have. I have my company gps, a rand McNally and my phone.
If I had the exact address in all 3 I would have noticed the discrepancy.
Also I know what my truck can and cannot do especially as we get closer to winter.
Even if he got past that initial climb, at the top of that hill is a set of light rail tracks that may or may not snag his landing gear, and if he gets past those, unless he's turning left, he'd never make the swing to get back OFF of that road.
And all the side streets off of it are narrow as fuck residential streets with absolutely no room for a 75'-foot long by 108" wide vehicle.
Lol this was in Pittsburgh, drive by this turn every single day. Even without the no truck signs you’d have to be crazy to even attempt this in anything bigger than a pup.
I’m not a trucker so I was going to ask what is the proper way to make it up that hill, but then I saw the signs. So I guess the right move is don’t go up that at all
The shit I see on this sub is a large reason why I've never put my CDL-A to use. Seems like an amazingly high-risk profession. Thank you all for trucking and getting things done. The level of idiots on the road, I just haven't signed the deal with the devil and started driving yet. It seems impossible to get a job around here with experience. For experience, it seems like OTR is the only way. I talked to JB and swift, and they've not stopped contacting me 7 months after asking them some questions.
Nothing a wrecker and $1000 won't fix. Otherwise, Low low gear, off road control and traction control. The X15 would help too. At least if it were to happen in my truck.
That is the only way to get to that receiver up at the top of the hill off to the right however he was supposed to come in from the left instead of right
No worries!! I just have personal trauma from that intersection lol. Almost blew my oil pan coming thru the intersection from the other way. Many times lol.
This is probably the only case I have seen where just dragging everything might work! I have seen a crazy amount of things that you just go WTF!! We had this one truck made a jug handle and the back of the trailer went over s Jersey Barrier and they proceeded to drive and dragged the trailer with sparks flying until he
Is it an extra long trailer as well? I have seen this happen with one of those big white windmills and with a bridge support. But they were much longer than the typical trailer.
I'm from Pittsburgh wnd this pic doesn't do it justice that final slope is REALLY steep even in good weather it makes you nervous and most people will just stop right before rhe slope I'm kinda 50/50 kinda fun
Now I will say this: there are many roads that say no truck, yet there are shippers and receivers that you have no choice but to go down that road....now with that being saidthis was clearly not one of those situation.
1. The hill just looks crazy
2. Says no truck, and I believe that low clearance sign, so they weren't making it anyway.
3. You know they were following that Google maps. Because common sense shouodnhave kick in and said no hell let me find another way or call the receiver to find out how to get there safely.
I have almost done something similar. I appreciate the "no trucks" sign, but I do wish they were posted where they are clearly visible from all directions *before* you enter the road, instead of set back 50 feet
Like another person said, some roads you look at and say. "Nope". That comes with time and/or common sense. I don't know if it can be taught. BUT this fella had a dang sign 🤔
This isn't in Cincinnati is it? I just went up a road that looked exactly like that yesterday, only difference is I was driving a bus. Was down by the river.
This is clearly a mistake of trusting your GPS or being lost and making a panicked choice to attempt the hill even though there are multiple signs saying no trucks. Whenever you are in a city check the route to make sure it’s correct. Throwing an address into gps, even truck gps, and not checking will inevitably lead to a situation like this. Should have still had the sense to notice the fuck up and stay on whatever main road he was on before trying the hill.
There is a road in town that is impossible for a semi to pass but you can’t tell until you get to the turn at the top and yes there are signs but it’s the way gps tells them to go often and about once a year some semi gets stuck or flips. It looks good at the start but gets pretty steep and at the top a 90 degree turn onto a narrow road and they are forced to back down once they get to the top. It’s bad news.
I used to live right down the street from this intersection. When I was growing up we had a clutch car, that combined with the snow and hills, great fun driving, also 🤡👌
Aye!!! I live right by there lmao. You should see the pickups that try to take it in the winter after a storm. Fuck it’s hilarious watching them slide back down.
Yeah there’s a good restaurant across the street to chill and do it from lmao. Actually, the steepest street in the US, Canton Ave, is only about 1/4 mile from this
I'll have to check it out. I delivered throughout Pittsburgh for a bit until my route got pushed to Irwin area, never driven and walked so many hills in my life. Was never in better shape than with that job though!
Welcome to PA, home of the confidently wrong with tenacity to follow through. Actually driver probably isn't PA, or they would've known better. But PA drivers aren't much better all around.
I’d even go as far to say, old boy had that same route not long ago and did the same shit. After all the commotion told everyone “Ya know I’d have made it if them idiots hogging the opposing lane would’ve waited. I’d have brought that trailer up in there at an angle, would’ve been just fine.” Or did the same shit before and did make it cause nobody was sitting at that light. This time was crowded and says “fuck a guy can’t get a break, let’s do this.” The same exact mother fuckers taught me in school. Also, can’t tell me it’s the people who teach or whatever excuse, cause I spent 16 years watching “veterans” make questionable maneuvers. Actually the best driver I had ever seen, pretty sure used his lunch box to pack toys instead of food. May have been nsfw, not sure, as I unfortunately never got the pleasure of finding out.
Yeah, no excuse then. I hate the ones where half way down the damn road they decide they don't want you on it and put the signs there but no way to actually turn around.
In a city near me the roads keep getting smaller and smaller, and then right after a turn left they place a sign saying no trucks, which isn't visible before you start turning. Some people who are in charge of sign placement should be fired
Im sure and hope the driver won’t forget this day soon, big mistake/mishap. Looks as if noone coulda been hurt, wonder how long it took em to realize that icc was dug in. With those guys standing around I’m guessing he tried to even back out to no avail lol. Looks like a pretty solid strap down though! Kudos to that!
That's a big fuck that. Even if I somehow completely missed the hill while starting my turn I would abort that shit and go another way even if I had to get out and direct traffic around my big dumb ass.
Wtf were they thinking. Even if you ignore the two no truck signs just looking at that hill should have made any other option immediately the better one
I think the problem here is California's FU slide ur tandems all the way up and still have too long of a wheel base. Then gives you roads like this and blame you even though they made you slide them up.
This is in PA. This is clearly signed no trucks. The driver is ultimately responsible for where he puts his truck just like he's responsible for where he puts his dick.
