Is moving to USA in 2025 worth it with everything going on?

I have been thinking about moving to US for career growth (more front office roles in Finance) but now after recent elections, I am a bit worried. Like is it still wise?
I am looking NYC obviously (SF is good too, I am craving sunshine but more finance NYC is more popular and I'd like to be in financial hub). What are you thoughts?
Also, if you know countries with front office roles please let me know!
NotMyUsualLogin@reddit
One does not simply “move” to the US for a job.
What one can do is find a sponsored job, then get in the same H1B queue that a shit tin of others are in and wait to see if your application makes it through the other side.
For the 2925 window, out of 479,953 folk who applied, 470,342 were eligible and out of that only 135,137 were actually issued a visa.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
It will be L-1 visa for me
NotMyUsualLogin@reddit
An L visa is for intra company employees - so are you currently working for a company that has US offices?
If so, it is exceptionally unusual for such people to have their choice of locations in such positions as companies invariably place you where you’re needed the most.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
yepp
I see you moved to UK to USA, how hard was it?
NotMyUsualLogin@reddit
I’m really confused - 3 months ago you wrote the following:
Now you claim you’d be using an Intra Company L visa.
Yet an L visa requires that you have been working at a company for a full year minimum before they can apply.
kylekortex@reddit
i love people that check this haha
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
As I mentioned, I have been thinking to move to US for some time and at the time of that post I didn't know I could move on L1 visa, now I do.
And I have been working in my current company for more than a year, and in a few months more than a year at my current role too (although I need to check for L1 requires 1 year min at the company or also in the same role)
another thing in my head, starting in a new office or in a new role even in same company is equivalent of starting a new job (altho I think in post I meant new company cause I didn't know about L1 then)
RavenRead@reddit
One DOES simply move to the USA if you’re American. Don’t assume. There are plenty of Americans abroad who thought of moving back, saw this guy take power, and are now thinking again. I can move there tomorrow if I wanted and live with family. But… would I? This guy is removing rights, dismantling agencies, defying judges and everyone’s…ok?
NotMyUsualLogin@reddit
It’s pretty bloody obvious the OP is not American.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
I'm not American, and exactly why I posted in Expats reddit because experience for a citizen and expat can widely differ
Amazing_Leave@reddit
Especially when OP is looking for sunshine in SF. Not the sunniest city in the US.
Ellie8437@reddit
Don't move here. It's too risky.
innocentbunnies@reddit
I live in the US and have been spending the last several years considering leaving the country. Currently it’s not feasible for me and I’m not sure when it will be tbh. Given that you’re wanting to work in a finance office sort of role, I would not advise you to move here unless you have a secure exit plan in place.
This country has less than stellar worker protections compared to many other countries, has been actively removing regulations across the board (including worker and consumer regulatory protections), has been flirting with a recession, and dramatically increased the number of unemployed people who are now looking for work.
There has been a dramatic increase in anti-foreigners and stories of people coming to the country with all of the correct and up-to-date documentation being detained or denied entry.
If you do decide it’s worth it to try to come anyway, I highly recommend you have a Plan B if you’re detained or denied entry upon arrival. If you manage to get past that and have a job that may eventually lay you off, have another plan in place to survive for months, like at least 6-12 months, with no income due to jobs being so hard to get (I applied for hundreds of entry level GIS jobs over the course of six months before landing my current job). If you decide to leave the country even to visit family while here, make sure you’re prepared for a possibility of not being allowed back.
So while I wouldn’t advise coming, I’m not going to tell you “absolutely not, do not come.” I will, however, advise you to make absolutely sure you have several contingency plans in place.

In that case, I think you’ve led a very privileged and sheltered life. I was born and raised in the US with ancestry that has been here long enough that my family participated in the committees of correspondence as well as fought in the revolutionary war. I even had the privilege of traveling outside of the US once in my life, though I wish it were more so I, too, am privileged. Most of my life was spent growing up all over Texas which is allegedly a very free state.
While our poor are richer than some others in the world, they aren’t nearly as well off as your claim. My family once needed food stamps temporarily after my parents divorced and we couldn’t qualify because I was in college, had a minimum wage job, and not pregnant; my sister was in high school and not pregnant; and my brother was too young to work. Basically because we were actively bettering ourselves and just needing temporary help, we couldn’t get help. Child support only went towards my siblings because I was irrelevant, legally speaking, and my mom didn’t get alimony even though she’d been a stay at home mom up until that point. That same year I got into a car accident due to a semi that failed to yield to the right of way and lost my job. Still didn’t qualify because I was in college and not pregnant.
While one of my schools never experienced a shooting, I had regular bomb and shooting threats instead that required us to evacuate the school often. Even got to watch a fight break out in the lunch room once that resulted in the winner running out to a car that had a driver waiting to whisk them away. Rumor is that it was the offender’s mom. This same school tried to get me suspended because I wouldn’t tell the assistant principal what I talked to the counselor about, something that’s illegal. That same assistant principal got demoted to teacher and proceeded to cuss out the entire class on the first day when my brother got her for math. He ended up being so far behind that when we finally were able to move, he had to do remedial classes for a good while because he was at an elementary school level and couldn’t do high school level math.
So I’m glad you were sheltered and as privileged as you were. But you shouldn’t dare state that this country is amazing either. Because it’s not. Thinking that sort of way is foolhardy at best and insinuates that there’s no room for improvement and that things are fine. A lot of other places have issues too with others that are certainly better than here and others that are certainly worse. Have some nuance instead of perpetuating the nationalist propaganda that any criticism is intended to harm the country.
SpeedWeasel@reddit
Jesus, the negativity in this thread. The US is still a great country to live and work in. If your objective is career growth, it’s hard to beat. NYC is an amazing city for finance, friends of mine in finance in SF tended to eventually move back as it feels a bit sleepy if you’re not in tech on the west coast.
Don’t worry about any of the political stuff, US political system is pretty decentralized so chances are most of the weird stuff won’t hit you if you’re living in NY state. Your local and state government make a far bigger impact on your day to day life. The people worried about being rounded up and sent to a detention center are crazy.

If I were you, I wouldn't do it. The job market is horrendous and unpredictable and we're in the territory of authoritarianism.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
not tryna defend US but what place isn't, rise of right wing parties ain't just US issue although US might become a shitshow sooner than others or not at all and all this fuckery dies down and common sense returns
New-Importance-6819@reddit
I like your optimism, but I don't share the same sentiments. I just don't think we'll ever be normal again. So much damage has been done within trump's first couple of months in office, and it could take years for things to be normal again. I don't trust our elections to be fair/secure anymore. I was hopeful for midterms, but I just don't know anymore. Everything is hanging in the balance.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
I don't know in which phase of life you are, but if you had an option to move out then will you?
New-Importance-6819@reddit
I have my passport, and if presented with the chance, I would definitely leave. I also encourage people to get their passports just in case something happens. Trump is already trying to privatize the usps. What scares me is that America was put on a civil liberties watch list about a week ago.i think people don't understand how deep this is. I don't think some people still are paying attention, and some are still in denial about where we're at. There are legal migrants and some citizens being detained or put in dangerous prisons in El Salvador. It's despicable. I know that there are judges put in place to stop Trump from doing illegal things, but it doesn't matter if he chooses not to listen to them. What about you?
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
I want to move for career growth and I thought it would be easier to integrate since Americans are generally welcoming atleast in experience of my friends and no language barrier. NYC has a lot of opportunity for my field and levelling up to that level without moving there...idk if it is possible. I don't like my job rn (funny cause today they announced salary increment) and yeah those are my main reasons. Healthcare was already a big concern for me but now this new political scenario is just cherry on top
New-Importance-6819@reddit
Yeah I totally understand where you're coming from. Just weigh all of your options and see what benefits you the most. I'm American and I'm scared at how things look from the inside. I could be just over reacting, but please be careful if you decide to come to the US.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
Actually really appreciate all your responses! Tbh in any political instability, people inside the country are usually last one to panic as they are closer to issue and have better/clearer insight so if an American thinks this then I know things are real bad. Hopefully, this all settles down like pandemic (it was nice that it wasn't end of the entire world) but yeah good luck to you too!
New-Importance-6819@reddit
Of course, and I hope that it settles down, but I truly don't trust the guy in charge. Just be careful, know your rights, and stay updated on traveling changes. I wish you the best and if you have any updates in the future, please let the subreddit know.

I actually heard that historians of fascism are leaving US so that was really concerning for me. Another thing I thought was when Afghan came under Taliban there were protests of women against coverings and yet, it went through. I see a parallel here unfortunately, I think it will be best for me to wait a couple years atleast. I actually thought if there was somthing as big of a deal happening as I am seeing on internet then the government would be thrown away quickly (like what happened with Martial Law in S Korea recently) and thought it is just internet wild fire and it will die down but I don't think that anymore. I'm also a women so safety is biggest thing for me which I was debating in US even before the election in general. I guess I just need to figure out something else for my career. Hope you stay safe too!
New-Importance-6819@reddit
Hey, what's up? Yes, one of the professors wrote a book on fascism and the others are leaving and following suit. There are definitely some parallels. I don't know if you know this either, but the republicans were trying to pass the save act. The save act would essentially make it harder for women to vote. We would have to provide our birth certificates or passports and possibly re-register to vote. I'm glad that you made the decision that's best for you. Yes, and I feel like trump is more than likely going to implement martial law. I don't think it will die down either. Yeah, everything here in the US is unpredictable as of now and you take care. Hey, I don't know if you're interested but there is a school called the American school of the Mediterranean and it offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for students to complete in one year. Here's the link if you're interested. You stay safe, and keep us updated on what you decide to do next. https://www.acmfrance.org/
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
Hi! Yes, I heard about the save act. I always assumed US is too large of an economy too fall so rapidly but now it seems like there were cracks already for some time but then again I never thought Ukraine war will last this long or even happen to begin with. Ohh I loved how quickly they overturn martial law in S Korea. We need better leaders around the globe and I hate how always normal people pay the price. You already mentioned you have a back up so I hope you will be fine. And yes, we can stay in touch altho it is unlikely I am gonna move atleast for a few years and you take care too.
Btw why did you send me this school link? Do you work there or? Hahah thanks but I already got my degrees so I'm good on that part. Thanks though
Eatpraylove75@reddit
Yes, it's all a mess. We definitely do and the leader we have here in the US is a moron. I agree, I also hate that regular people who didn't vote for this are paying the price. The UK recently announced a travel warning for people traveling to the US
lethal_defrag@reddit
And what did the travel warning warn?
It said make sure you follow all us immigration laws lol.
Context matters
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
Laws? You think Trump follows the law?
But here you go: https://amp.dw.com/en/why-are-germans-being-detained-by-us-immigration/a-71987211
lethal_defrag@reddit
Are you mad that I stated what the travel warning says? They aren't advising against anything other than you have to follow the immigration laws - which was always the case, and is the case in any country lmao
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
What has not always been the case is ICE holding European foreigners with valid ESTAs or entry waivers without due process for protracted periods of time.
lethal_defrag@reddit
The didn't warn against that. They warned you need to follow the laws lol. Read it
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
No they warned that even if you do follow entry procedures and requirements that you are not guaranteed entry. Which is standard however, being locked up without access to lawyers on spurious grounds is not standard procedure unless visiting an authoritarian state where the rule of law is meaningless.
lethal_defrag@reddit
You aren't a citizen and you aren't in the country yet, so you have no rights lmao. We like that here in America.
theedgeofoblivious@reddit
The fact that you think what you are saying is reasonable is terrifying.
lethal_defrag@reddit
It's always been that way bro and us that way in the majority of countries lmao
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
Considering ICE has abducted green card holders without a warrant, your ‘rights’ mean nothing. And I am very thankful not to be a US citizen, always have been.
lethal_defrag@reddit
You don't need a warrant to detain someone in America in general lol. People can be detained for questioning for 24-48hrs if not bring charged with a crime
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
Best your brush up on those ‘laws’ you keep citing with ignorance.
https://www.aclunc.org/our-work/know-your-rights/know-your-rights-if-ice-confronts-you#:~:text=ICE%20can’t%20come%20into,to%20come%20inside%20you%20home.
QuantityStrange9157@reddit
Right but when has the UK ever issued a travel warning to the US outside of 9/11? That's the point. Like I'm not even sure i want my girl to visit this summer because of this bs. They already harass her every time she visits. And it's not just about people traveling here the orange man is making it harder on all of us who actually have to live outside the US. This isn't a one way street and I'm dreading having to fly to Germany in May and then try and get back into the UK.
lethal_defrag@reddit
When the US started placing tarrifs lmao there's no advisory against danger or anything remotely related to that. The advisory says the US will be following US immigration law, which is nothing new. It's just sensational for headlines, the content of it is a nothing burger
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
‘Nothing burger’ apart from a loss in tourist revenue of USD 18 billion and a drop of 11%.
https://fortune.com/2025/03/17/foreign-tourism-us-forecast-trump-tariffs-trade-war-russia-ukraine-war/
lethal_defrag@reddit

Usernameoverloaded@reddit
It’s ok, you’re a Trump supporter so no point beating a dead horse.
lethal_defrag@reddit
Ew no I actually voted for Lucifer Everylove
But is that the best insult you got for someone you disagree with? At least try to get something remotely accurate 😂😂
Usernameoverloaded@reddit
A Trump troll, how thoroughly commonplace
lethal_defrag@reddit
Its funny because you think I support trump, and what you're saying is supposed to be offensive to me? If I'm not insulted because I'm not a trump supporter how is that supposed to make you feel? Lmao
QuantityStrange9157@reddit
Jesus you're dense and clearly have never traveled outside of Oklahoma. Border agents can deny you entry for arbitrary reasons and its 100% at their discretion and if America is treating Europeans with arm twisting then they (EU/UK) will apply the same to Americans abroad. No one is disputing you about following the rules that's not the point and you still haven't answered my question? Because I don't ever remember an advisory about following rules they already followed unless the US was acting out of order.
lethal_defrag@reddit
Exact. I'm advising you that everything you're required to uphold will still be your responsibility.
A real advisory is "don't go you're going to get kidnapped" lmao.

Rebel forces in Syria were defeated on December and people are returning to rebuild the city. Our neighbours were a Syrian family who escaped the war and came here to New Zealand, but they’ve just left last month to move back home. So maybe we can remove Syria from that list? (Still a question because I know there’s still a lot of work to do there but it looks promising from the little I know).

Not sure, we moved in in 2023 and they were here already. I have been curious about it though. Our neighbourhood has regular get togethers and an older couple on the street who have been here for 30+ years known everyone so I’m sure they have more info, might ask sometime.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
Ohh I am curious about that too! Because usually I meet Syrians who have lived outside Syria for many years and it wasn't long ago Syria became free so I am surprised they would move back swiftly if they have been in NZ for a long time

Depending on your situation it could be rewarding but there is no one size fits all. There are increased risks along with moving to the USA at this time. Risk:Benefit is not something anyone can calculate for you.
There is a lot of uncertainty here at the moment and more likely to come. IMO... If you are somewhere safe and have a job outside the USA... Maybe stay until things stabilize and predicability is more possible.

If you are craving sunshine, San Francisco is not LA. It is a windy, rainy, cold-ass place most of the year.
Absolutely gorgeous city with a vibrant local culture, though.
ritaq@reddit
SF weather is outstanding. Temperate year round and sunny most of the year. There are also microclimates: Mission Bay/Dogpatch/The Mission, dry&sunny most of the year vs Ocean Beach (constant fog)
Now, for next level dry and sunny and warm weather year round, go to Thousand Oaks or other areas in SoCal
chiree@reddit
I'd almost call them pico-climates. 18th and Church can be cold and shitty while 24th and Harrison is pleasant.

I wish I had the money, resources, and a degree in something, so I could move out of the US.
HedonisticMonk42069@reddit
for as many people that are in a hysteria and freaking out, there are just as many that are thriving. I say go for it OP
FreeEar4880@reddit
Anyone who can read is now looking for ways out. And you are looking for a way in. I don't know.... Reconsider maybe?
LupineChemist@reddit
What are you after? US still has best salary to cost of living ratio as anywhere and a pretty good life. Especially in finance. If you can get the visa and the job I'd say take it. The Trump show will end at some point so take the opportunity if you have it. Never know if you'll have a chance later
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
As I mentioned, front office roles in Finance - that's what I am after.
Yeah I agree with all your points but ngl current politics do make me anxious
LupineChemist@reddit
It's not great but there is a lot of hypocrisy here with people holding the US to a much higher standard. Nobody would worry about political freedom if you said you wanted to go to Dubai or Vietnam who are way worse.
Not defending it, just saying that this too shall pass.

Rent for a studio in NYC or SF is gonna be like 4000-5000$ a month minimum. You might be able to find something outside of the city for cheaper but those are like our most expensive cities.
To answer your question overall, no, now is probably not a good time. Politics aside, if you are moving to try to make more money (what I'm assuming as you mentioned your career) it's probably not worth it. The cost of living is going up, we are headed towards a recession, and the work-life balance isn't the greatest. Not to mention expensive healthcare and America and isn't the most immagrant friendly right.
No-Tip3654@reddit
How is the US not immigrant friendly? You can become a citizen, have kids and they'll basically be american. You can't just integrate and assimilate the same way in any other place on earth. At least not in Europe.
Ok-Register-9611@reddit (OP)
I get it. Keeping current politics aside, idk where to go tbh
Front office roles are more accessible in NYC or LND and anywhere else in the world mainly I just see BO/MO roles and I don't want to do it
Cojemos@reddit
You'll be ok. Move and enjoy your life.

No way, it’s just not safe. Things will get worse. Maybe try again in the future if you really want to.

If you have a good job waiting, you’re white, and you’re not LGBT, it’s still a good place to make money.
The US is currently all about deporting people of color and criminalizing LGBT behavior.
I would see the US as a stepping stone to better things. Don’t stay there.
Ok-Ordinary2159@reddit
Nope nah no negative

If you are young and have nothing tying you down, why not take the chance? You can always move back if it doesn't work out.
If you have roots planted, then I agree the decision is much harder if you have to sell a home, move with children, etc...

You would be better off in Frankfort, America is a mess right now and not just politically but job security wise, really do your research on American labor laws and how easy it is to be laid off and fired simply because shedding your salary provides shareholder value
