Will be in New York wkend of June 6 so looking to go on a trip before that or after (I’m based in Chicago). Will be traveling solo as a woman and looking for public transport and English speaker friendly places to visit! I like visiting big cities or places with a lot of nature (have been to a few national parks in the US and enjoyed it but national parks here and most of the US aren’t very public transport friendly 🫠). When I’m traveling, I enjoy sightseeing, exploring different neighborhoods, hiking (I am not an intense hiker though. The hikes I've gone on are like 3-4 hrs max), and going to places where I can see pretty views of the city (when I’m visiting a big city). Am not really in museums or nightlife.
I’ve mostly been to big cities in the US and haven’t spent much time outside of the country except a few spots here and there. I feel like visiting a country in Europe would be fun but am a bit concerned about the cost of flights and hotels as it’s high season then. I usually travel in Sept. alternatively would love to go somewhere I can easily access hiking with public transport but I'm not sure how common that is. Below is a list of places I’ve been to. TIA!
-Belgium (Bruges and Ghent - Vancouver - Paris - East coast (NYC, Boston, DC, Philly, Baltimore) - Midwest (Chicago, St Louis -West coast of US (LA, SF, Portland, - Seattle - South (Austin, New Orleans - national park (Zion, Mt Rainier, North casades, and Bryce Canyon)

Lisbon, Prague and Budapest would be my go to. Cheap cities, accessible through public transport, good food, safe. I enjoyed all of them a lot.

The whole world is English friendly.

Montreal and Quebec City!

Not English speaking. You'll get away with it in Montreal but you're gonna be treated like trash in Quebec city if they hear English out of your mouth.

Oslo and/or Bergen! You'll have access to a lot of beautiful hikes in and around the mountains as well!

Nowhere in Europe is safe for a solo traveling woman. Don't even think about it.

I’m currently solo in London and have spent time in Spain, Portugal and France this trip - I haven’t felt unsafe at all.
What are you basing this on?

Tokyo! The public transit is outstanding, I have never felt safer traveling somewhere. Not everyone speaks English but there are signs/menus in English all over, and the customer support is excellent. You can get the big city feel while also visiting cool historical sites and beautiful parks. I can’t wait to go back someday.

We just got back from a week in Sweden - Uppsala and Stockholm. Extremely English friendly and very safe, I felt very comfortable going places by myself! It was beautiful and the food was amazing.

Basically anywhere other than Chicago or NYC is going to be safer. Don’t go to california it’s basically a state that looks like Chicago and NYC now.

Edinburgh! You can fly into London then either take the train up (long but gorgeous trip), or get on another short flight. Exploring the city by foot is wonderful, they've got some close- in hikes as well as convenient day trips that can be taken as either part of a day tour or just on a bus. Depending on where you stay, they might have some discount arranged with a local tour company.

Definitely Montreal and Quebec City. (It’s close to New York and can be done by bus.) Perfect for a week long vacation and it will truly feel like you’re in a different country.
If you had 5 more days, I’d recommend HK or Singapore.

Vancouver is wonderful for this!! If you check out Lynn valley canyon it was one of my fav places to explore for free via public transport from the city

Marseille has cheap flights from NYC! I did the solo female thing there in 2020 at 19 and stayed at hostels. Had a great time.

Portugal is very friendly. I have been to many European countries and so far no one beats Portugal in that regard, but that's me.

Hong Kong. Excellent public transport, lots of colonial English leftovers, good hikes - The Peak, Lantau, NT- and a wildly different experience to you list to date.
