Becoming a therapist/counselor in EU (From US)
Posted by crucis119@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 85 comments
Hello Expats! Future Hopeful, here.
TL:DR Partner and I are trying to move to the EU (specifically Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, or Finland, depending on several factors) in the next 2-5 years and I am trying to figure out what of my profession is transferable and how much more schooling and/or certifications I'll need as a mental health counselor.
My partner and I are working on a long-term plan to either live abroad, in the EU, as expats for a short time or immigrate for the long-haul. He has been working on possibilities with his job, at which there is an office in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He's a software engineer, so we aren't very worried about him transferring offices or finding a different job. I, on the other hand will be (when we make the move) a Masters degree holder of Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Our top countries that we'd like to live in (in this strict order), and plan to visit next summer are:
Netherlands
Sweden
Denmark
Finland
For those of you who have made a move from the US, are a licensed mental healthcare worker in the EU: what did you need to do in order to obtain licensing in the country where you now live? If you feel comfortable, please share your degree(s) and credentials so I can compare with my own current professional path. Did you need license and/or national certification to be recognized in the EU?
Is a PhD required in your current country?
In advance: If I were to gain my license to practice (LPC) in the US, it would take 3 years of work post-grad and the license is state (not country) specific. I do plan to obtain national certification (NCC). We have considered delaying the big move until I am licensed, depending on how much difference that makes for me.
Thank you all so much!
Clarifying edit: several folks have commented the need for being fluent in the country's official language. I am not currently fluent in anything but English (I know enough Spanish to get around in a Spanish-speaking country but not fluent) but I am able and willing to learn a new language.
Sensitive_Ad_836@reddit
I’m also looking into doing Telehealth with US clients while living abroad, and I’m wondering what you ended up finding out as to the best way to do it. Thank you in advance.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Hey friend! I am genuinely struggling to find information on this part. I've been hearing conflicting information from people when it comes to even just doing telehealth across state lines.
Scared_PomV2@reddit
Most of the time it's not allowed but it all depends on the state you're licensed in. Now will they figure it out? Most of the time no if you're smart
Sensitive_Ad_836@reddit
Hi! Yes I too have been seeing conflicting information. If anyone anywhere has practiced teletherapy with clients in the US from Europe — Please pass on your knowledge!
drumman998@reddit
Hi there. I realize this thread is 3 years old but was curious if you were able to find anything out on this subject as it's appliable for my situation.
m_chutch@reddit
there's a facebook page called 'location independent therapists' ... good info on there
drumman998@reddit

Absolutely! You're welcome to join the Discord and browse our resources. You are also welcome to use my Kofi and schedule a time to chat with me about my experience in a more individualized way: ko-fi.com/serelliottcmhc

Hi there, I joined the discord but don't see how I can access the files or the chat.
Distinct-Art4406@reddit
So, I’m in Florida. And here you can do telehealth from anywhere as long as the client is in Florida. I’m planning a move to Italy and I can’t figure out either if my education will transfer, but I found out I can still see my clients like I have been. The only shitty thing is the 6 hour difference.
Thilda2020@reddit
I don't know about transferring your license, but I think maybe working for an online therapy company based in the US could be a way to get around that.
theicyfloe@reddit
Is anyone in this thread doing this because I plan to move to Europe and was hoping I could do online therapy, would like to hear more
Old_Concentrate_4622@reddit
I’m currently slow traveling Mexico with a licensed therapist friend who is doing this - her clients are in California (where she is licensed) and it doesn’t matter where she is.
I imagine that freedom varies state to state, but wanted to offer a confirmation for at least California!
Bored-housewif@reddit
this is correct. as long as your clients are in California, and you are a licensed therapist in California, you can be anywhere. If a client is outside of the state of California, you need to understand the guidelines of the individual state. So if your client moves out of California, you are not allowed to see them unless the new state allows clients to see out-of-state therapists.
P90BRANGUS@reddit
I think it's funny how many therapists are thinking this way. I am considering going to school for therapy in the U.S., but a main drawback to that is not being able to live abroad.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Yeah, this is looking like the most realistic option if we move to the EU. I just really do not like the idea of my entire practice being online, but, I'm not saying no to the option.
nonperfect_nonhuman@reddit
Hi it’s two years later and I’m looking on the web for peoples experiences. Do you have an update you can share?
Lily-padbladerunner@reddit
Same!
ebksince2012@reddit
You can practice in the EU with US clients. Your clients must be in their home state but you can be abroad
icedespressoo@reddit
Do you have any links that confirm this? I can’t find any credible sources on my own and from what I understood you also needed to be in the u.s?
ebksince2012@reddit
Its state to state dependent. In FL ,as long as your client is in FL and you're licensed here, it says nothing about you needed to be in the state.
You make a good point though, I've only seen info about where the client is located never the practicioner. This was the most I could find

BenniHB@reddit
Would love to hear more about the journey and if you were able to get the licenses? In a similar boat right now with my wife.
tacosandrainbows@reddit
Yes please update us!
Unlikely-Ad9063@reddit
Thanks for the post. I’m curious to hear what you’ve learned since embarking on this journey? I’m in a similar boat, but from Canada. Lots of folx mentioned the language requirements, but did you ever figure out that actual transferability of credentials separate from language requirements?
Did you ever learn more about the possibility of being a counsellor/coach as an unregulated profession and what the possibilities/limitations to that might be?
I suppose these questions are most specific to the Netherlands as the other places may be distinct. Thanks for sharing any knowledge you have acquired that may help smooth my path.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Yes I do have some updates for the Netherlands specifically and in Switzerland. It looks like my husband and I will be moving to Switzerland next year due to his job opportunity. I will message you and the other recent commenter with info that I have found.
Aija11@reddit
I'd also love to know what you found out. I'm wondering if traditional American therapy is even a thing in Europe! I have dual citizenship, but now I'm doubting my career choice... tho I do love it. So I'm conflicted.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Hey Aija, did you find the Discord link? We don't have a ton of resources, but our resource library is gradually growing.
It is a thing, in the space of counselling and/or coaching. And from what I have heard from practicing and professionals, it is a growing field with a high demand. People are seeking counselling support outside of the traditional/Freudian psychoanalysis, and looking for more modern skills and support.
ksmith05@reddit
hi I'd love to join the discord chat! Im an american completing my masters in counseling currently seeing clients in my internship (and I'd love to live abroad)!
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Hey the most updated link is in the comments!

Hello! Could I join the discord as well please?
Wise-Delivery4098@reddit
Hi, would love to learn what info you have on this! I am also considering moving to Europe after completing a doctorate in clinical psych in the US.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Hi friend! If you jump on our Discord we've had a few info dumps sharing what we've all found. And as far as I can tell, you'll be able to go further with a clinical psych doctorate than you would with a Masters.
deepfried_pickle@reddit
could you share the discord link with me, too? Thanks so much!! :)

I am a licensed CPC (LMHP) and LCADC as well as NCC here in the US, but born and raised in the Netherlands. I am planning going back next year and have been researching the same thing as anyone else. First (beside the language requirement) you will have to have your degree evaluated. If there the education is equal or more than the requirements in the Netherlands, you will have to do some tests to proof that you know the Dutch healthcare system and you have to pass an exam to shw your knowledge of counseling. If your education lacks certain classes, you have to take those in the Netherlands. When you are done with all that,. you will have to apply to be registered in the BIG register as a “psychotherapeut” is a protected profession. I was told it can take somewhere between 1-3 years and about 1200 euro (without the possible classes) for this process to be completed. Telehealth would be the way to go however I do not know which US telehealth platforms allow you to practice while being abroad.
DangerousProgram137@reddit
this may be unrelated and well, untimely -- but did you attain your licensure as an internationall/non -immigrant or under immigrant status?
IncidentWooden9590@reddit
I obtained my licensure as an American, after I graduated from an US college. It does not matter. The BIG register in The Netherlands will have you send your school transcripts to an agency that compare the education to the education standards in the Netherlands.
Unlikely-Ad9063@reddit
Thank you for this!
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Hi everyone. It is hard to believe this thread is already 3 years old. I am still running the Discord to support others who were facing the same question I was. It's also been recently updated because, SURPRISE, there are 570+ people on there now!
The body of information we have collected is growing and changing at a steady rate. I hope this thread and the Discord can continue to be a place to support folks looking to make a similar change that I was.
Here's the invite link for those who are just finding this:

Yes. Read that first and follow the instructions. You have to react to it.

Anyone trying to join but finding that the link isn’t working, this may help - the link didn’t work until I seperately set up my discord profile, logged in and then clicked the link again. Now I’m in! I hope that helps and I’m stoked for all the mental health professionals finding ways to thrive!

Sad_Journalist5758@reddit
I just recently join and I am still stuck on that same section.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Did you react to the message in the "read-this-first" channel?
Exotic_Initiative_17@reddit
Just curious if there’s been any movement on this thread in the last couple of years. Currently licensed in Florida and have previously lived in the EU so I’ve been curious about going back.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
I guess the movement is that I moved to Finland. I have been successfully continuing to practice, via Telehealth, in Georgia for the entirety of my time here. I am gradually building a counselling practice here as well, as well as working towards board recognition (both of which are taking a good while). You are welcome to check out the Discord and also shoot me a DM there and we can chat further if you would like.
raqstar282@reddit
Thank you for all the info you've shared! I'll be moving to Portugal by the end of this year and wanted a bit more information. While practicing via telehealth were you using a platform like Headway or Sondermind or were you doing private practice? Were you able to accept insurance or were you only able to do private pay?
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Yeah the Discord is open! I just updated the link.
I use Google Meet because that's what my practice in the States uses. We don't take insurance, private pay only.
WarIndependent1394@reddit
I lived in Germany and researched this, there is a 6 year program to become a therapist in Germany. You need to speak German. I decided not to do it. That said, I met a coach who had done a one year program and was very popular, his clients thought of him as a counselor and paid him as such. I am becoming an LMHC in the states and will do telehealth with US clients
AnyConsideration2748@reddit
Ok
Nightowlonthetrail@reddit
Psychologist here…trying to leave. I have my multistate passport, but even with that, you have to pick a state you are doing services from. You can’t do them from anywhere in the world. Coaching is the only option I am aware of.
crucis119@reddit (OP)
You can, in certain states, with certain titles. Georgia is one of those states in which an LPC or APC can practice from anywhere as long as the client is situated in Georgia.
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
Hi there, my wife and I are both mental health professionals. She has her LCSW-C and I’m almost finished my MA in counseling. We are looking to move to Germany and are researching the same thing. Have you determined if you can practice telehealth for US clients while living abroad?
Adventurous_Clue6393@reddit
My understanding is that, the clinician can be anywhere, but the client must be in the state where the clinician holds a license. So, if you hold a license in Massachusetts, and the client is located in Massachusetts (literally, sitting in the state of Massachusetts), then the clinician can be anywhere in the world. However, this law may change state to state. So, become licensed in a state where this is definitely the law, call the Board of the profession in which you are licensed to verify this, and then you can travel.
BenniHB@reddit
Did you find anything regarding this?
DurianNecessary9108@reddit
Hi did you find anything
crucis119@reddit (OP)
Due to a little bit of new traffic on this thread, and in the good-natured spirit of resource sharing I have started a little Discord to help other US-trained and credentialed counsellors who are trying to make a similar move.
EDIT: link update

My wife is an LCSW here in the states and we’ve been looking at making this move for a couple years…haven’t found a straightforward path to get her license easily recognized in an EU country so she can operate at the same clinical level, good luck and hope it works out for you.
