Very early Serial Mouse that uses a tracking ball

An old mouse that I acquired decades ago. Still works on windows if you have a serial port.
DominBear@reddit
that is a wild transparent case. really cool.
ATXsantucci@reddit
I love the old clear cases. I just got this one from 88. https://imgur.com/a/zXunFZg

If I had a nickel for every tracking ball I've removed from a mouse and cleaned, I would not be on Reddit right now.

Kids these days will never know the hardships of each week having to overcook a fresh hardboiled egg yolk for the computer mouse. /j

lol
zmerlynn@reddit
So you’d get off Reddit for a few bucks?
DogWallop@reddit
Call me weird, but I actually oddly like taking the ball out and cleaning the little rollers inside. It's cool to feel the change in response when they're clean. And yes, I do know how grody the stuff on the rollers is :-P
NojTamal@reddit
Oh man I remember this was my job as the TA for the computer teacher in middle school. Thousands of the little bastards, with that little strip of caked-on shit on the wheels. Haven't thought about that in ages.
btgeekboy@reddit
Back in the school computer lab, we had to have everyone turn the mice upside down before they left so we could see they’d not stolen the balls.
Bipogram@reddit
And the rollers.
itstanktime@reddit
I'm using the white version of that. It has fantastic stainless steel internals that make it so smooth. Also it has the longest serial cable of any of my mice.
KindaTheQuietkid43@reddit
I have the same model as this one but it isn't with transparent plastic as this one.
Ricenaros@reddit
Haven’t seen a clear one like that. Super cool
sjclynn@reddit
It is sad that the plastic ages and discolors. These were originally crystal clear rather than a yellow tint.
GimmickCo@reddit
Can retrobrite help?
igobyraymond@reddit
Retrobrite is just bleaching the plastic. So in this case it would make it worse
JasonMaggini@reddit
Might be able to retrobright it.
SirTwitchALot@reddit
I want to set it on my desk next to one of these

This is why I like trackballs, easier to clean, more precise movement. I've never seen a clear one before though!
digital0ak@reddit
Had to link this memo on how to clean...

babj615@reddit
I just threw a bunch of these in the garbage!
JimtheLizardKing@reddit
I've got one that looks just like this except solid white.
Own_Event_4363@reddit
MS actually built decent mice, serial port and early USB ones.
irrision@reddit
I'm so old...
tregare@reddit
Not that early, the original commercially available MS mice came in serial or with a dedicated ISA card ‘inport’ I think it was called. I am digging back through decades old memories from when I worked at MS supporting DOS, windows, windows for work groups, and initial Windows 95 release.
scubascratch@reddit (OP)
My “very early” is a riff on the other “very early USB mouse”. This one is from the early 1990s
tregare@reddit
Ah, I didn’t see the ‘very early usb mouse’ post, sorry
tregare@reddit
Also, the majority of mice on UI workstations used optical, not mechanical tracking during that time. Some of the higher end PC mice used optical tracking with the special printed aluminum mouse pad, but the mice with the ball inside were cheaper for them to produce, so that’s why you’ll see them on Consumer level computers of the era. The most common mice with optical sensors and a printed aluminum mouse pad were seen on sun workstations I believe the next cube Silicon Graphics workstations some Hewlett Packard, workstations and micro VAXes, but it was pretty rapid most companies, including workstation companies, moving to mechanical tracking mice, using the ball to move rollers Because it was a lot cheaper for them to produce and also you didn’t have to worry about the printed surface of the mouse pad, getting damaged and causing your mouse pointer to jump or in some cases with some of the older ones, the whole mouse could essentially crash where it would stop tracking altogether. If the damage to the mouse pad was bad enough been there done that wish I gotten the T-shirt.
wibble089@reddit
I managed to get my sun optical mouse to track using the thread pattern on my jeans!
melikefood123@reddit
I had an old sparc station that required a special pad. I too remember mice being sold with an isa card.
iLIKE2STAYU@reddit
A VGA mouse goes crazy….
schmosef@reddit
Thanks. Now I feel old.
LostRacer@reddit
At least it's serial and not a BUS mouse.
mikee8989@reddit
That used to be totally clear I take it
scubascratch@reddit (OP)
My memory of when I got it in the early 90s is it was always a bit sepia toned / gray
RichardGereHead@reddit
I know this is a bit of a joke post with someone else posting USB one. But, honestly, this is a pretty cool find. I've been around the block and I have never once seen a Microsoft transparent mouse, nor even heard of them. A (very shallow) google search kind of confirms they are pretty unusual. Apparently they had a clear "intellimouse", but that was way later.
Did it always look like that, or has it "yellowed" with age?
scubascratch@reddit (OP)
It was always kind of sepia toned, but it seems slightly cloudier maybe
956nick@reddit
Look at her
Roanoketrees@reddit
Serial devices sucked, Parallel was worse. Life was hard before USB.

H3rbert_K0rnfeld@reddit
It has been a very long time since I have sabotaged my coworkers ball mouse
theLightSlide@reddit
Very early?
Gnissepappa@reddit
Think it’s a joke based on this: https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagecomputing/s/9flJ5MNhuG
scubascratch@reddit (OP)
Indeed my post is a riff based on the USB mouse
HesSoZazzy@reddit
Thank god. I'm too young for things invented in my time to be talked about like middle-aged artifacts.
theLightSlide@reddit
Aha!! Thank you. Clearly it is.
Although now my surprise transfers to that post, lol.
FlyByPC@reddit
Those were a PITA, even after you developed the muscle memory to open them up, scrape the gunk off the rollers, and put them back together without thinking about it.
Direct optical is the way to go. (They do it because it's also cheaper, though.)
kodabarz@reddit
'Very early' is a bit of a stretch. Microsoft started making these in 1987. But they'd already been making serial mice since 1983.
manuelink64@reddit
Microsoft HW was always top notch,. first time seeing a translucent one, know I want it!!
rootifera@reddit
I'm still using the white version of this mouse, it is really good!
1997PRO@reddit
I have that one but it is solid white.
grateparm@reddit
The Dove bar mouse. I've got quite a few of these, but I've never seen a transparent one. Nice find!
