Willie5234@reddit
Does anyone know of a company that has dedicated routes between California and Ohio?
HurriedLlama@reddit
Don't take 70 if you don't have chains, they're required equipment until June. The mountains will cost you more time and fuel, in exchange for being the most beautiful route in the country
Stone_man68@reddit
They just passed a law for Vail Pass. No chains cost $2650 now.
Ornery_Ads@reddit
Other than a "gotcha" or if you screwed up in a storm, is it actually enforced?
I may or may not have taken a route that requires chains knowing full well that I didn't have them, but also that the roads were clear and the forecast was good for the next 3 days
SpecialSeparate6028@reddit
Good question, yes, I did my training mostly on 70. They'll pull you in just to do a chain check. So you better have them.
jmzstl@reddit
They're more likely to check for them at random when it's not snowing. At the beginning of the season, they'll have multiple blitzes where they pull in every single truck to make sure they have chains, and also chase down every truck who doesn't pull in.
Caution-Contents_Hot@reddit
There was a mobile/temporary inspection point occasionally setup on the west side of the Glenwood canyon on I70 last year.
Aromatic-Scratch3481@reddit
I lived there and I was always told it's a gotcha
mblack1993@reddit
It absolutely can be, and there can be check points that will see if you're compliant. The fines vary, but if you end up blocking the highway due to an accident, it's an easy $1000 + additional fines. I've driven without chains before, but if you're a company driver, be sure they get some stowed on the truck.
TroyExplores@reddit
The most is exaggerating tbh but one of the scenic Road sure.
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
thats fair i just love the scene
ApperentIntelligence@reddit
yeah you couldn't payme to take 40W or 70W out there, going through the mountains and through that tunnel that got destroyed, Check how much time you have to get that load there and look at taking 80w out to About Oregon then heading South through the interior or east side of Cali, depending on what time you hit Cali you might just drive straight through without ever hitting traffic.
Its all about that trip planning, taking the shortest path isn't always the best not if you get stuck in snow for 2days
Waisted-Desert@reddit
Currently, weather is actually good on either route. I-70 in Vail right now is as clear as it ever is. But take the southern route. It's a much easier drive except for the two days in winter that I-40 gets shut down because someone was an idiot
Vegas to Middletown sounds like a Nucor load.
bunssnowman@reddit
I-40 especially if you don’t have mountain experience. I-70 can be scary.
papisilla@reddit
On a trip this long kinda just gotta send it and roll the dice. Roads might be fine by the time you get to those areas or they might be worse
Mnemorath@reddit
Take the southern route. Be sure to take a break in Missouri and pick up some fudge from Uranus. There is also a Waffle House on I-44 exit 127 I think that has truck parking. It’s right next to the outlet store.
Artistic_Alfalfa_860@reddit
If you're trying to avoid tolls you really don't want to be driving through Kansas
Mr-EddyTheMac@reddit
I wouldn’t wanna touch Colorado rn
jcsworld417@reddit
Between dust and blizzards they've been closing most of I70 between Denver co. and Salina KS. About every week, for the last 3 weeks.
Stick to I40, I44, I70 east from St Louis. We've had 25+/- winds. Kansas I70 has seen 45-90mph winds and snow.
Clutchinzz__@reddit
Use truckrouter.com ! You can input 53 ft or box van or whatever and it will give you best legal truck route and fuel costs and everything. It is free to make an account
Fair_Replacement3907@reddit
Seriously? It's just a little cold water over the Rockies. How bad could it be?
hellbillyjoker@reddit
Godspeed im from the Middletown area. The place is a hell hole. Best advice? Take 40 and then stop in KC and stay there. Don't come to Middletown
Noalias_@reddit
Does anyone take I-70 west to avoid high wind on 1-80 west or east
kadinzaofelune@reddit
Crossing through CO you are REQUIRED to have chains in your truck.
miguelvolky@reddit
40
CrookByTheBook@reddit
Dark blue one will 100% be faster
Slosky22@reddit
coco will get hit with snow in next 24hrs on your proposed route either get ahead of the weather and stay ahead of it or go south and. Or worry about it at all always when possible avoid unnecessary weather delays
Original-P@reddit
I would avoid I-70 west of Denver at all costs. The 2+ mile elevation and unpredictable weather conditions can be brutal. Not to mention all of the New Jersey drivers you’ll have to endure. They like skiing in Colorado for some reason.
Aromatic-Scratch3481@reddit
It's not the new joisey drivers. They've seen snow and hills and they wanna fucking get somewhere they're aggressive but they've got some idea. It's the Texans. The training for the company I worked for out of vail had a separate slide in the PowerPoint about Texans.
Virel_360@reddit
Take the southern one. You don’t wanna be going through Vail in co.
Aromatic-Scratch3481@reddit
I drove vail to DIA and back in shuttles in the winter for a living for 5 years (human shuttles, sprinter vans) this dude is 100% correct
RoscoMD@reddit
I-94. Always I-94.
lss607isamess@reddit
The one that doesn't have snow
Bogey01@reddit
Yup, just stopped to check on a freightliner that was on his side
lss607isamess@reddit
Oh damn good on you for checking on them! 👍
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
yea colorado is kinda hit or miss
TootinRooster@reddit
I40 100% good on you for asking though!!
rilloroc@reddit
Take the bottom route, but try to schedule yourself so that you're not going west across Amarillo anywhere near 5pm. I40 West is at a standstill everyday around then. If you have to hit around that time, take loop 335 around town.
Maly_PLn@reddit
Drive to Tucumcari NM take 54 go to Kansas city then 70 east
Linfords_lunchbox@reddit
If you haven't been across there yet, wait until you have a light load in the summer.
Savings_Article7952@reddit
I’m near Middletown lol goodluck at the loves truck stop
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
loves is hit or miss good food and coffee or absolute tweakers
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
so real
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
take it through colorado very scenic god bless you god speed
ScaryfatkidGT@reddit
In March?
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
you are required to carry chains till june though
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
yea its hit or miss
bilalrazam@reddit
I second that, I just had one of my trucks delivered in Denver - clean weather, no complaints from the driver. But it would cost more fuel money.
DrinkBulky7486@reddit
thats very true but preference for me since im owner-operate
LitLFlor@reddit
I drove through Az and ok on the 40 last January, it was pretty severe winter conditions. Several trucks wrecked when I passed through.
I bypassed i70 between SLC/Denver several times this winter, to drive through i40 winter conditions.
Have you done much winter driving? You know how to throw chains?
EVOChi@reddit
Screw vail pass. Go i40
