Man drivers piss me off. I'm only 8 months in and some days I'm sick of this crap. Just earlier today, I get fuel, pull up, was going to go inside and use the restroom real quick but wanted to grab a bite to eat and finish my 30, so you guys know with this eld bs we have to creep. Had two mouth breathers blast the air horn at me cause they couldn't wait 10 seconds for me to get out of the way. Im trynna be a good noodle and not block the fuel island, hope they step on a lego.
I guess while im here ill also bitch about other drivers not having a brain and acknowledging gravity exists- If I'm fully loaded and your obviously empty don't cut me off on the down hill. This is such a brain dead lonely job and I have to constantly remind myself not to get outraged at the smallest stuff.
ItsSugarbear@reddit
They were trying to ask if you had any Grey Poupon.
heathenfloydsson@reddit
Is this another sub inside joke, like the fireball?
DeepthinkerCC@reddit
It's an old TV commercial, two luxury cars pull up next to one another and one has the other if they have any Gray poupon

Hahaha, I used to randomly ask people that just for laughs.

After 30 years of doing this, I am glad to be on the outgoing end of this career.
icodyonline@reddit
You can also use off duty PC or on duty yard move and it will count towards your 30 minute break
PalePersonality6331@reddit
This is bad advice and not allowed by DOT. PC, in this instance, is only allowed if you're off-duty and not under a load. Yard Move is not permitted at a truck stop loaded or not.
Down2EatPossum@reddit
You definitely can use yard move at a truck stop, use it anywhere you are on duty and moving the truck.
PalePersonality6331@reddit
You definitely can, but legally can't. One day, you'll get a big ole' fine and put out of service for doing it... but, you do you, driver. š¤·āāļø
VGPreach@reddit
How are they gonna prove it?
PalePersonality6331@reddit
Events on ELD(s) are data logged with a gps coordinate.
VGPreach@reddit
Do you really think they're checking to see if someone moved 0.1 miles to 0.0 miles? Bc that's the size of s truck stop parking lot
InShapeTrucker@reddit
Itās not necessarily the DOT officer thatās going to check. But if your company gets audited, and your logs are selected for that audit, you best believe that auditor is going to look at that .01 miles you moved. Iāve seen it happen at my company. And the driver was fined 5 months after the fact. I think itās complete BS. But they can and do look at those GPS coordinates. Government is gonna get their money one way or another.
VGPreach@reddit
Crazy how my company was audited and it didn't happen to me
PalePersonality6331@reddit
Driver, Idgaf! Aparently you haven't dealt with many DOT officers as finding something to collect revenue on is kind of their thing. If that's what you're doing, keep on truckin. It's real easy for them to look at events on the ELD logs. One day you'll meet a DOT officer that cares just enough and you'll get a hefty fine and get put out of service at a weigh station somewhere.
It's not so much the distance as it's moving from one status to another and claiming your "mandatory 30-minute break." I'm used to paper logs mostly but I understand the regs and know some DOT officers. You can drive your truck however you see fit and I could care less. The only reason I said anything is there's a newer driver asking a question and getting some "potentially incorrect" advice.
You're seemingly butthurt that I'm pointing that out so I can only surmise from your butthurtedness that you are one of the ones also doing it. Again, what you do doesn't affect me in any way shape or form. I only tried to make sure the advice given was accurate. You can take the information and keep on trucking or you can take the information and consider looking for a different way to do it. Either way, keep the shiny side up and stay between the lines.
Feral_Newspaper@reddit
Been driving 4 years and have yet to get a ticket for a cop going through my logs. I turn yard mode on and log it as construction/accident if I'm trying to sneak a 30 stuck in said traffic.
But then again my truck is Always in order appearances wise. You got a broke/dirty truck i could see you getting into more drama.

Old info, go to the source. Here is from FMCSA
Question 9:
Under what circumstances may a driver classify the operation of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) as a yard move and record it as on-duty not driving time?
(a)
Guidance:
A driver may record time operating a CMV for yard moves as on-duty not driving under 49 CFR 395.8(b) only if the movement of the CMV occurs in a confined area on private property (or intermodal facility or briefly on public roads, as described below). Examples of properties that may qualify as yards include, but are not limited to:
An intermodal yard or port facility.
A motor carrier's place of business.
A shipper's privately-owned parking lot.
A public road, but only if and while public access to the road is restricted through traffic control measures such as lights, gates, flaggers or other means. For example, if a driver must operate on a public road briefly to reach different parts of a private property, the movement may be considered a yard move if public access is restricted during the move.
(b) Examples of properties that do not qualify as yards, include, but are not limited to:
A public road without the traffic control measures in paragraph (a)(4) above.
Public rest areas.
PalePersonality6331@reddit
Old info? I gave you a link from 2024 and you give me a information from 2020? J. J. Keller is an authority on all things trucking so I'll take their interpretation to be more meaningful than misunderstanding the reg from 2020. Also, truck stops do not stop the public from accessing them so even from what you posted "public rest areas" are not acceptable places to use yard move.
Down2EatPossum@reddit
I got it from 86 FR 179. I guess they would have to further define a public rest area, truck stops are private property. Public rest area would be a literal rest area. Truck stops have signage that define Truck area vs normal public area, mostly anyway. Seems more of a gray area than anything.
Down2EatPossum@reddit
Should also note that as of yet, FMCSA has not opted to define a "yard".
Down2EatPossum@reddit
Yard Moves āYard movesā is the term for transfers of CMVs between locations within a terminal or similar facility on private property. Yard moves may not occur on a āhighway,ā as defined in § 390.5T, i.e., any road, street, or way, public or private, that the public can operate a four-wheeled vehicle on that is not restricted by signs or gates. Under the regulations for electronic logging devices (ELDs), yard moves are classified as on-duty not driving time. But just what is a āyard?ā FMCSA is trying to better define that term. On January 4, 2021, the Agency published proposed guidance with examples of properties that would and would not qualify as a āyardā (86 FR 179). Yard move status could be used āonly if the movement of the CMV occurs in a confined area on private property (or intermodal facility or briefly on public roads ā¦)ā For further details, please see the January 4, 2021 Federal Register notice.

That rule was changed. You can PC even if under a load as long as youāre not progressing to the pick up or delivery unless safe parking is in that direction. Obviously it has to be the nearest first place. And since truck stops have a policy against taking breaks at fuel Islands you can use PC to progress to a place to park
Mobile-Ostrich7614@reddit
Legally he can use yard move as itās a private yard. But even in the eyes of the DOT the ELD creep is technically a no-no as your moving the truck for on-duty purposes while being off-duty

Taken from FMCSA directly
30-Minute Driving Break Drivers must take a 30-minute break when they have driven for a period of 8 cumulative hours without at least a 30-minute interruption. The break may be satisfied by any non-driving period of 30 consecutive minutes (i.e., on-duty not driving, off-duty, sleeper berth, or any combination of these taken consecutively)
Neither PC or yard move works because they are driving functions.
icodyonline@reddit
Their definition of driving is on highway or roads. Yard move and driving are two different things in the eyes of the FMCSA
Down2EatPossum@reddit
Nice, I stand corrected on that, now do PC
icodyonline@reddit
PC is a little more tricky. You can use PC during your 10 and 34 hour reset and it will count towards your break. You can also be on PC and it would satisfy the 30 minute break on your ELD. Whether or not it was legal depends on where you went while on PC. You can PC to a mall or a restaurant during your 30 minute break

halfcow@reddit
You can absolutely use PC for parking. Why would it not be allowed? You are moving for the benefit of the driver from the fuel island to a parking space. You are not advancing the load.
The driver has to go into the store to pee. That's for the benefit of the driver.
InShapeTrucker@reddit
If thereās heavy traffic and Iām empty and I catch ya on an uphill, brother, you best believe Iām going to let that line of traffic behind me get by by getting in front of you before or on the downhill. Throw on your engine brake and enjoy the scenery. Now if itās an empty road, of course Iāll just stay in the left lane for the inevitable pass Iām going to make because youāre loaded.
Iāve been driving 20 years, man. I do take my own advice and just use the engine brake going downhill if someone has started to pass me. Itās just a lot less stressful to let them go, get good distance, and then resume using momentum.
tommychong41698@reddit

Feral_Newspaper@reddit
Switch to on duty yard move. Then you can drive up to 15mph (i think could be 25) and out still counts as a break.
I do it all the time stuck in traffic.
Blanc0_one@reddit
Some great illegal advice
Feral_Newspaper@reddit
I've had my logs checked several times an no one says anything. I always log why I do it when I do it. Been driving almost 5 years now. Course my truck is always 100% in order so maybe that's why cops don't bother me. Lots of guys driving with broken trucks they prolly take all the heat.
Blanc0_one@reddit
Yeah there's a lot of those trucks with all their fast food wrappers on the dash that keep dot busy and we skate by on the small things, but if they actually wanted to you know they could get you for that
Feral_Newspaper@reddit
Lol yea, but I got good karma. As a team driver I dont trip on hours like the solos do. Takes ten minutes to fuel and wash windows so it's easy enough to fuel then drive regular to a spot then kill a break. 10 minutes won't hurt me. I can't stand people crawling lol. Like let me by lol.
Blanc0_one@reddit
I get that, I had a student with me most of the time until I got this local route
Feral_Newspaper@reddit
Although to be fair there is an option to select for an accident within yard move. I'd argue it depends on how often you use it and the exact reason. And if you get caught lol.

One thing I've learned in my days driving is that truck drivers are one of the most unlikeable, disgusting, inconsiderate, narcissistic, self absorbed groups of people you will ever come into contact with. Expect everyone to suck, understand everyone DOES suck, and just mind your business. After a few confrontations, a few fist fights, and lots of shaking my head, I just ignore everyone at this point and realize it's just not worth it to care about. But it's definitely a nice breath of fresh air when you meet a cool trucker.
Minimum-Jacket-705@reddit

Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
Why creep? There's this wonderful invention called yard move. Fuel up, yard move to parking spot, finish 30. Truck stops are private property, just like shippers/receivers.
xxenoscionxx@reddit
Yard moves only help your 14 hour clock I thought ?
Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
No, yard move saves your 11h drive clock. It will take away from 14. It's on duty time not driving.
xxenoscionxx@reddit
Gotcha , I had it reversed. Iāve only used it at Coors or Walmart. I probably should use it more.
OrganizationNo6167@reddit
āCustomer lots that do not have prohibitive signs or gates, malls, truck stops, and parking lots the public can access are all places that cannot be considered a yardā
Examples of Yard Move Locations: -Carrierās terminal -Customerās facility with restricted access -Rail yard -Private parking lot with restricted access
Examples of Non-Yard Move Locations: -Truck stops -Malls -Public parking lots -Unsecured terminals or docks
Not to be that guy but this is bad advice and is illegal
cnash@reddit
Sure, but so is the under-five-mile-an-hour creep. It's supposed to be drive time, even if you're driving really slowly. I dunno why you're fussing about what is and isn't a yard for doing yard moves, when the alternative at hand isn't any more kosher.
OrganizationNo6167@reddit
Welp you better make sure you pull up faster than 5mph when done getting fuel, you moved the truck so you better log drive time!!!
But for real Itās about what DOT can prove you were in violation for, For OPs situation, his log will show vehicle movement for .01 miles. Nothing suspicious. Truck stop was busy couldnāt drive any faster, so what?
Yard move at a truck stop with gps location on your logs of you doing so, easy Pickens for DOT.
Ur_Fav_Step-Redditor@reddit
Youāre chatting pure shit! Thatās not an FMSCA rule. I use yard move EVERY SINGLE TIME Iām at a truck stop and Iāve passed more than a few inspections where the DOT officer literally THANKS me for the why I leave notes on every yard move.
A truck stop is private property the same way a shipper is. Nowhere in that goddamn handbook does it say it needs to be some hyper secure location that shoots 4wheelers on site for trying to enter. You can not use it on PUBLIC ROADS, meaning any road that isnāt on privately owned property. You also canāt use it at a rest area. But yes, tf, you actually can use it at truck stops. Iāve been doing it for like 7yrs now bc Iām very proficient at reading comprehension and I read and comprehend what tf they wrote in the handbook.
OsBaculum@reddit

This country man
Snookfilet@reddit
Same. I use it every single time and have never had anyone say a word about it.
Actual_Handle_3@reddit
Under the old rule, 10/15/8, I was taught that was on duty, not driving. 25 years later, I still log it the same way. On paper, it makes sense. It's in 15 minute blocks, and you round to the nearest 15 minutes. 12 minutes to fuel, 3 minutes to park, that's 15 minutes of on duty. Elogs, that's falsification!
jonsalas@reddit
Although you are 100% correct, thereās no way to tell where the yard move took place. As long as youāre not getting inspected at the truck stop, youāll be fine. Iāll tell you this, as a former flatbedder, DOT knows we need to loophole the shit out of our logs to be able to make money sometimes. What theyāre looking for is that your logs make sense. If you just have driving and sleeper berth for 6 days in a row, thatās going to be a problem. When did you fuel? When did you unload? When did you reload. As long as they see the stuff they want to see, theyāre not going to say much.
MADLUX2015@reddit
And not all companies have their eld's set up to use yard move.
raddrobb67@reddit

Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
Yard move is on duty not driving. That's the whole point of it is to get off the drive line.
Is yours counting it on the drive line?
Nero-Danteson@reddit
Mega carrier. It doesn't tick on the drive line but does show yard moves on the On duty section. It's ticked me for violation of my 30 minutes even though I was in yard moves for like 45. (Didn't really bother me, I was shutting down for the day) Got a call the next day like "You went into violation yesterday care to tell me about it?" Pointed out that I wasn't really but company policy is 30 minutes either on duty or off with the truck in parkš
Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
That's weird. Yard move would be the same as just being on duty, pre trip, post trip, etc. I can yard move for my full 30 if I wanted. I just can't drive faster than 15mph, or it will kick over to the drive line. I couldn't go with a company that adds on another layer of stupid rules ontop of the stupid rules.
Fuzzy1598@reddit
