Prior DUI's

I'm in Washington state, and want to get my CDL. I have 2 DUIs in my past. They are both over 10 years ago. Do these charges effect my eligibility or is it only DUIs after I am a CDL holder?

I think it would be better for everyone on the road that you don't.

People change, evolve, age, gain wisdom. How would it feel to be judged by your dumbest mistakes? Are you unredeemable or do you learn and do better.

People change after one DUI... but someone that got two of them clearly didn't learn the lesson.

I don’t think there is a rule on when you learn a lesson. The first one was a fluke , the second is a problem but hell, I have made mistakes that I still haven’t learned my lesson from lol.
It sounds like this guy has done his probation / fines / etc. His debt to society is paid back. Sounds like the state of Washington will not license him. So that’s a done deal.
What doesn’t help are these snide comments, further stigmatizing him. You take away a man’s way to make a living, you drive him further away from society by looking down on them. The higher likely hood that he will reoffend.
A little less self righteousness and a bit more empathy is needed, because we want successful rehabilitation right ?
He won’t be trucking but he could still easily take out a family in a sedan.

Let me ask some of my friends who were killed by drunk drivers. Oh, wait. I can't. Drinking and driving isn't a mistake.
xxenoscionxx@reddit
I don’t think this guy has killed anyone. I didn’t feel like that’s what he was saying. If it’s not a mistake I don’t know what you would call it.
A conscious decision to put those around you in grave danger ? I know what you’re getting at. I don’t have the words for it either.
However I also think people can fundamentally change.

You aren’t eligible. 2 DUIs in WA is a lifetime ban.

I'm about 95% sure that is if you have a cdl at the time of getting those dui's

I'm glad, i think even a single DUI at any point in your life should make you ineligible for a CDL.
dblink@reddit
I feel what you're saying, but a single time gives a person a chance to correct their behaviors and never do it again. Getting a second DUI says you'll never change, and there's no point in pretending you won't get a third, fourth, fifth, or eleventh DUI. Putting it at 2 is a good hard line.

Most employers / insurance wont hire you
rytram99@reddit
Ya, DUI's and other substance abuse charges seriously hurt your chances of not only getting a CDL but also getting hired as a driver.
You have to understand the responsibility a trucker has. We haul up to 80,000 lbs of potential disaster and death. It is a very serious job and therefore has very serious consequences.
Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? No. Should you even do it? Not if you have an alcohol problem or any other drug problems.
You can't even smoke weed.....ever as a driver.

Easy buddy he said it was over ten years ago. We aren't air traffic controllers here.

A DUI is DUI. It stays on your record. There are other factors to consider. Did OP have to take mandatory AA sessions?. He might be required to perform a SAP. If he is required to do SAP, then his options will be very low. Many companies do not hire SAP drivers.
I am not overstating it, and i am also not overstating the seriousness of our job. We haul up to 80k/ lbs and are a massive risk to public safety. It needs to be taken seriously.

I got 2 dwis and later on became a trucker. 10+ years out they seem to impact me less. But a few jobs, they turned down my app, said it wasnt personal, insurimg me was way too high.

I've had two duis.. First one was expunged.. First one happened 20 years ago. Second one happened 14 years ago. The second only shows up on the background.. I was hired with no problems whatsoever. Mainly because the first doesn't even show up . And the one on my record happened 14 years ago..I've heard of people getting one removed from their record years later... Look into removing 1.
