I'm an hourly short-haul driver and have to follow strict company rules minimum 7 second following distance. Also have to drive 5 mph below the posted speed limit. I have so many drivers tailgating me instead of just passing me. It's hard being a relatively new (16 months OTR) driver. If for any reason I need to hit my brakes I'm going to eat the truck behind me.
Another issue I have is why so many truck drivers ignore construction zones / speed limits. I get it, you're paid by the mile, but maybe do better planning.
I agree. I like to go 5 under and keep a ton of following distance because traffic in my area has pockets of congestion that you’ll only see after turning the corner. But then I see all these other big trucks riding bumpers and flashing brights and can’t believe they’d take the risk.
So many truckers sniffing DOT bumpers. It’s fascinating how little regard for the possibility of anything at all going wrong ahead of the truck they are inches away from some of these dipshits have.
I think these companies should make a sticker for the trailer that says “Do You Know What’s In Front Of Me?” It’ll probably do as much good as the wide turn stickers, but it’s something.
I had some super ego today about take my front bumper off with his DOT bumper, not to mention he blew my doors off. Speed limit is only 70 fool.
But I always keep my distance, I’ve once saw a white Volvo legit 6’ off of a guys bumper once, like you can’t see nothing even when you’re “far enough” back. I always run about 65-70 so everyone passes me and I don’t have to deal with running in the pack with other vehicles
Definitely have the same thought!
I run heavier over 80 all the time and stay very cautious in traffic and yet some idiot blows up on my left while hugging a cars bumper
It’s almost like they’re not professional drivers.
I was driving my car at the speed limit down the highway in the right lane cause I was taking the next exit and this guy with a full trailer was so close to me I couldn’t see his windshield. I stuck my hand out the window and motioned for him to get back for a whole minute (15 seconds) before he gave me five more feet. Still barreling behind me and the driver finally darted across two lanes but it was as I exited and then back to the right lane even though second left lane was completely open for passing.
Constantly smelling brakes where I haul. Ridiculous how close so many follow. I get the whole "counting 1 second per 10mph" isn't something you can just keep doing your entire drive, but damn at least be in the ballpark. 75+ following 3 CAR lengths is so dangerous and I see it ALL DAY constantly.
This is exactly how I felt today on i84 eastbound in OR. Some of you fellow drivers were really pissing me off today with that bullshit. I have a light 17k lb load, so obviously, I'm blowing doors off going uphill. Why did you fuckers feel the need to cut me off when I'm going downhill safely at 65?
Had an oversize almost hit me. He was pulling a combine running 75+ in IL (speed limit for oversize there is 5 over the minimum speed.). I braked down 5 mph because a truck passing me threw rocks into my windshield. That was enough for him to need to slam on his brakes.
That oversize went off. Asked how an idiot like me got in a 7 axle. Said he should have been fine because his blinker was on, I should have checked my mirrors, etc. Literally anything he could come up with to keep from accepting blame.
Same bro its literally insane how many trucks get a foot away from my trailer and sit there. Its like you can get as close as you want it won't get me to speed up
The problem with that is if you maintain a safe following distance a car always sees that as an opportunity to squeeze right in between you and the car you were behind.
Man I stayed so far back when I saw that other semi trucks were riding asses in the SNOW and ice roads especially when there’s no traffic. That’s insane to me. One time actually just in my regular car I saw 4 flipped over semi trucks on the same interstate. And later I came across one who was swerving all over the road for miles the other lane was incoming traffic so that could’ve been really bad. When the traffic actually came, he almost hit a street sign on our side of the road.
For real. I've got a camera and safety will be up my ass so I usually gotta slow down a little when someone gets right in front of me.
I've had this dumbass truck fire off a "collision mitigation" brake check when someone was riding my ass, too, but managed to catch it from actually doing it with the gas pedal. Dude flew up next to me pissed.
I had a guy riding my ass in a construction zone speed limit is 55 and he's in my ass.. why? I was going 56 and my truck doesn't allow me to go more than 2 over anyhow. Plus the guy in front of me was going 55 so.. wtf. Tired of these crackerjack cdl mfs
I just got to receiving for my load, I swear to God the whole way here all it was is assholes so far up my number I couldn't even see their headlights.
Probably, the number of 70mph 80,000lb butt sniffers is too damn high! What are you going to do if the first one sees a squirrel? Become the human centipede?
Trucks tailgating cars and forcing them out of the way is ridiculous. Dude must be doing at least 75mph in a 60mph zone on I-5 NB Oregon. I kept imagining what could have gone wrong.
I just don’t get it. Pulling 40k lbs, can’t stop quickly if i wanted to, little cars darting all over the place. I just want to get where i’m going safely and eventually go home. I can almost forgive the cars, they most likely don’t understand but the other drivers?
Although I've been blessed not to witness in person as of the present if I take the countless videos of pileups on the highways on social media into consideration. You are in a minority.
I had some flip flops fuckhrad in a turban suburban sniffing my back axle for about 30mi today for some unknown reason. He could've passed at any time but he just kept hanging out back there... Right up until I hit the brakes to take my exit and I guess I scared the shit out of him because he almost went right then corrected and veered into the left lane. He never even slowed down. I was laughing so hard at the thought that he almost went into the ditch.
At least twice a day, another truck will pull in between me and the truck I'm following at 3.5 seconds distance, just to pull out and cut off a car going 80 in the passing lane seconds later.
They don't think/look very far ahead and seem generally unaware of vehicles that aren't directly in front of them.
Zinrockin@reddit
What is most wild is when truck drivers are tailgating in the rain. Doubles the stopping distance making it 100% impossible to avoid a collision.

2 am, 2 trucks in the interstate highway. 2 inches off the bumper before passing you 15 mph faster. Still cuts you off 15 ft after clearing.
