Struggling with Motivation After Internship Hours – Anyone Else?

I’m currently in my third year of university and doing a five-month internship as a software developer. My internship runs from 9 to 6, and by the time I get home, I’m too exhausted to work on my side projects. Even on weekends, I find myself unmotivated, which is strange because I used to really enjoy coding in my free time.

Because of this, ive been procrastinating on my side projects, and it’s starting to make me feel like I’m falling behind compared to other students. I can’t help but wonder if others have experienced something similar or if this means I’m just not cut out for it.

Has anyone else gone through this? How do you stay motivated after long workdays? Is it acceptable to not code in your spare-time?

If you don't feel like working on your side projects, then don't. You'll just write garbage code and learn nothing. Either find a more interesting side project or take some time off and regain your curiosity. No one wants to work on something that doesn't excite them.

That suck man. Mine was very different. I would feel energised after the internship, I'd even be the last to leave and was the first to arrive always. I really enjoyed it. I'm guessing it's because it was the first time I was seeing how programming was like in the real world. Also I was being taught Django. My supervisor was very kind and was very open to me asking questions and seeking help.

I think all that, made me feel so energised that I could even code after work and do some side projects. However, I had to stop coz my eyes were starting to hurt.
