Yes, because Wordpress is basically an entire website in a box.
You NEED to understand that Wordpress exists and how to use it, because if you need to build a site, and you're able to build it with Wordpress in an hour, then why would you spend a hundred hours building it from scratch?
Wordpress is not the only such framework, it's just one of the oldest and most mature.
As a beginner, it's critical to learn how to build things from scratch. It sounds like you did that.
As a professional, an even more important lesson is when NOT to do that.

If you plan to go freelance, like it or not, knowing WordPress will help. 👍

Many years ago, I learned WordPress, but only after learning Drupal. Drupal helped me stay on top of php and JavaScript. WordPress, not so much. I needed to learn WordPress to understand it to compare it with other cms products. I found that with Drupal, I could implement "proper" CMS. For example, instead of having to write an online genealogy site for a family history group, I could configure Drupal to perform much of heavy lifting. However, I had to write some server-side PHP for things like a blood relationship calculator. Bottom line, it can be useful to understand both of these products.

If you're looking for a job, look at job hunting sites where you are and see what they're asking for. If wordpress is commonly listed, it'll help you get noticed if you have it, if it's not listed, there's no real point in learning it until you need it as it's not that hard if you know how to code already.

Do you expect to build some Wordpress sites for people?

I'm looking for my first job in the UK and it seems to be a requirement tbh for a lot of web design/dev roles I see around. I think I prefer coding to using some sort of template system for the control I have over what I am building but I wasnt sure to be honest.

They just haven't updated their job posting copy since 2015.

Wordpress is more than just a template system, but also a content management system, with a lot of plugins to facilitate other functions. People already on Wordpress would just want you to customize it to their specs rather than let you design one from scratch. As for how often that comes up... That's YOUR local market, you tell me. :)

I think it depends on the job nature to decide that it is worth to learn.
Wordpress are great for quick setup with visual template, blogging, sales & payment gateway for CMS.
Sometimes it can be quite handy for projects that do not need much customization.
