He’s been detained along with 100 others. Charged with aiding terrorism in Turkey and joins two other major politicial party heads in prison.
It is a disgrace and can show you that Tyranny is truly present and can happen at any time any where.
The right wing trends we’re seeing across the globe will only lead to other countries dismantling their democracies.
layland_lyle@reddit
The left just banned the most popular guy running for president in Romania due to TikTok videos they alleged were posted by Russia.
Far left, far right, both cut from the same cloth of spite and hate with that sprinkle of corruption to do anything to stay in power.
protonpack@reddit
When you say "the left" you should really say "everyone, except the portion of the right that is ideologically captured by Russia." You're just dismissing it because you don't know about it.
They fucking got Brexit passed because the West isn't taking their propaganda seriously. They have Russian books and Russian thinktanks that talk about their strategy to disrupt our ability to reason and work together.
If the UK stopped Brexit, and if the US government jailed Donald Trump for insurrection, the West would be in a better, stronger place. Instead our alliances have gone to shit and our PM is asking the king for nuclear protection from the Americans. Because Trump likes Russia better.
layland_lyle@reddit
Nope, don't play strawman. The ruling left leaning government are unpopular and the president was going to be replaced.
Everything else you said is just hyperbole and conspiracy theory.
protonpack@reddit
This decision was a unanimous one by the Romanian Constitutional Court. I don't have info about how partisan the makeup may be right now, but not even one vote against?
The replacement will be decided in the upcoming election. The AUR party has another candidate. You're just trying to equivocate this while ignoring/downplaying what Russia has been doing.
layland_lyle@reddit
There is no justification for what they did. As I said, the ruling was because of 80 TikTok videos, no joke.
protonpack@reddit
What a coincidence, the same number as your IQ.
Your bias is on clear display for everyone. The Romanian Constitutional Court is not a left wing institution. If you could demonstrate that, you would. I don't even think you're a serious person.
layland_lyle@reddit
Awww, having to resort to insults because you can't dispute.
vuddehh@reddit
Because you are talking out of your ass? You were allready corrected about the tiktok bs, but yet you still keep spreading the missinfo.
layland_lyle@reddit
Whatever floats your boat

I do not know the situation in Romania except that the banned person is a far right populist.
While that never goes well for any country, it will unfortunately propel him into a higher cult status, if not him directly, someone who will run on his platform… this sort of thing was what propelled Erdogan into power when he was banned from the balot in the late 90’d due to a short term imprisonment for reciting a poem against secularism in public, which is (was) against the law.
Good luck to Romania too, hope they can sort their crisis out without surrendering the country to an authoritarian like we did.
layland_lyle@reddit
He was banned because it was ruled that 80 TikTok videos promoting him came from Russia, not a joke!
He was right and somehow became far right, but didn't do it say anything that made him far right, it's just a label that gets too easily put on people today, like when someone supports the opposition party, they are called a racist.
Redefining words is a very 1984 thing to do.
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
I don’t know anything about romanian politics.
Hope they don’t have to deal with their version of Erdogan some day.
layland_lyle@reddit
Yeah about Erdogan, he just had his political rival arrested.
I think it might a political fashion at the moment.
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
Yup, I talked about it in the first post on this chain. It’s been a rough day for all of us.
TWVer@reddit
“The left” didn’t do anything in Romania.
The populist candidate in Romania ran afoul of election funding laws. His ban is due to justice being carried out according to existing laws voting in by a prior democratically elected government.
layland_lyle@reddit
He was banned (according to the ruling) due to 80 TikTok videos they say came from Russia that promoted him.
TWVer@reddit
Not just that.
He didn’t want to sign off on statements regarding the origin of the funding of his campaign, which all political candidates are required to do so.
KackhansReborn@reddit
Yes, both sides are equally bad, you are a true intellectual. Neverind the fact that "the left" didn't do shit in Romania.
layland_lyle@reddit
Far left and far right are cut from the same cloth, except one is proud to admit their hatred, the other hides behind alternative words, butt both want to persecute groups they don't like.
there_is_no_spoon1@reddit
{Tyranny is truly present and can happen at any time any where}
Don't know where you've been, but this kind of fuckery has been going on in Turkiye for decades. Erdo regularly jails or exiles journalists who print oppo and opposition leaders are constant targets of gov't interference/intervention.
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
This is extra egregious to the point of open provocation though. It’s hard to explain, but when you think of the boiling pot analogy, these are actual hot spots that are too hot and kinda wakes you up.
Love_JWZ@reddit
They also banned Wikipedia at one point
SirLadthe1st@reddit
I mean Erdogan is a shitface, no doubt about it. But it will be funny to see all the condemnation coming from the EU after an EU country just cancelled their entire election because the wrong guy won and then prevented him from starting again. I guess if Erdogan accuses Imamoglu of being influenced by russia all will be ok? Thats what Romania did, weirdly snd when they held parliamentary elections at more or less the same time the classic parties won, and weirdly enough they didnt detect any "russian influence" or csncel the elections then
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
No, imamoglu is charged with supporting terrorist groups and financing them.
All of this while the current government is in talks with the actual leader of said terrorist organisation.
It’s incredibly provocative and everyone is extremly tired of all this shit.
They’ve actually suspended most metro lines in Istanbul and have blocked a lot of roads in anticipation of a big protest so It’s like they want any excuse for shit to go down.
SirLadthe1st@reddit
Man like i said erdo is a fucking shitface. If that somehow leads to him being removed from the office thats sweet. Just hard for me not to see they hypocrisy that the same people and world leaders that qill rightfully call our Erdogan on his authoritarian bullshit celebrated when Romania decided that the voters voted "wrong".
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
I know very little about Romanian politics, but Erdogan himself was propelled to significant heights from his own incarceration (even it it was for a couple of months).
Generally when you try to ban people from doing what they want, it will backfire. It sometimes doesn’t, but often times it just makes the person a bigger figure.
I hope no country has to go through what we are at the moment.
It’s very depressing and unsettling.
DeadBorb@reddit
Often times it works and only sometimes it backfires. You just hear more about the backfires.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
It definitely seems like soon balconies in Turkey will become a safety hazard for many who oppose Erdogan
uulluull@reddit
Usually, passive voting rights are not related to education in different countries. They are definitely related to age, because from what I know you always have to be of legal age, and sometimes you have to reach a certain age.
Also, the fact that having your diploma revoked prevents someone from running shows that unusual things are happening in Turkey, to put it mildly.
YoloOnTsla@reddit
You know what would be awesome? If we completely revamped NATO, removing Turkey, USA, Canada, UK and any member not in the original NATO inception of 1949.
Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and Norway can hold it down in my opinion. Why we need a bloc of countries making collective defense decisions based upon a threat that died in 1989 is beyond me.
Key_Mission7404@reddit
Are you thick?
YoloOnTsla@reddit
I’m saying remove USA, Canada, UK (founding members), Turkey, and any country who was no a founding member. Which leaves the countries I listed.
Key_Mission7404@reddit
We started the group. If you wanna leave there's the door pal!
YoloOnTsla@reddit
That exactly what I am saying I think should happen?
The point is, NATO really shouldn’t even be a thing anymore. The EU needs to have their own collective defense agreement. Despite what people say, it is not in the best interest of the USA to subsidize defense for the rest of the western world.
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
It's funny how an Israeli is posting this since Ekrem immoglu is very pro-Palestine. OP thinks that the Turkish opposition will side with Israel just because they hate Erdogan lmao.
tabulasomnia@reddit
hilariously uninformed comment since erdo is very pro-israel
UnbannableGuy___@reddit
😂erdogan is literary pro hamas
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
It's funny how you get triggered by my flair
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
Just like how this 🇵🇸 flag triggers you.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Ok buddy, have a great time in kindergarten!
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
Too bad the IDF bombed it.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Yes it was full of Hamas terrorists and placed on a piece of land promised to me 3000 years ago.
I'd suggest you go study some comedy but I wouldn't want you to get arrested for trying to get an education
stannn98@reddit
Promised to you 3000 years ago? Man what the fuck is wrong with you guys lol
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
lmao I honestly didn't expect someone to not recognize its a joke but here we are
Dramatical45@reddit
Likely due to there actually being a lot of people who say that in a not even remotely joking manner.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Like I told the other guy, the amount of REAL people who say sh1t like that is minuscule. There are barely 10 million Israelis, less than 20 million Jews. 99% of the people reading this comment have never had a face-to-face conversation with an Israeli, let alone someone Jewish. Anyone who thinks this is some popular opinion has been on the internet for way too long without even knowing it.
Dramatical45@reddit
I mean it is ideology of the fringe right Israelis/Americans not necessarily Jewish people. You got all the evangelical nutjobs shouting this too. And whilst I am sure some are bots just like everything can be bots. But there's plenty of these people around and they tend to be vocal online on things like social media.
Heck your settler movement loons take every chance to voice their insanity including government officials. So people tend to see that and it paints Israelis(and Jewish people sadly due to stupidity) badly.
Sane people generally don't comment on that crap because it tends to be abhorrent. Majority of Israelis/Jewish people are not bad people. Just people. Same with Palestinians/Muslims/Insert X here.
Love_JWZ@reddit
Poe's law in effect
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
That's a valid point (and I wasn't aware of such a law lmao, thanks for teaching me something new) but this was said as a retort so I'd argue the context nullifies the law's relevance. Anyway not really worth arguing about and the reaction was still funny (to me).
Now it makes much more sense why people add /s I guess
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
I mean, can you blame them? Israelis use that argument unironically.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Hahaha let's be honest, you've never met an Israeli outside the internet and so you have no clue about what we actually think. Let's not throw around generalizations based on social media, mmmk?
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
Met Israeli tourists on Turkey, they were extremely rude.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Yes and I'm sure that not only do they represent all of us, they also told you the land was promised to them 3,000 years ago because that's how we greet people. lol
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
That's how you greet other people before you steal their lands lmao.
HummusSwipper@reddit (OP)
Ok well I've had all the fun I can with this conversation, goodbye now.
Snynapta_II@reddit
It seems to me like you're making a lot of assumptions about someone just from where they live.
Iraqi_Weeb99@reddit
Or because their post history is full of zionists comments.
Legiyon54@reddit
Damn they even annulled the title.
Or is it because of some subreddit's character limit rule &×<+^+<1:!">29×<+>1;1>#>÷;×9&>×;÷>;282;#>1;9×;@<2;×8;#91?@>@^×[1;#>
SunderedValley@reddit
The sub has a melty when you use the wrong ' in the title. Gotta manually replace it.
Also good god I can't believe people dick ride Erdogan so fucking much.
Legiyon54@reddit
Which people are you referring to?
SunderedValley@reddit
Reddit has been sucking up to him for weeks now.
Dude is no better than Orban and only a bit better than Lukashenko.
Common5enseExtremist@reddit
erdogan is simultaneously a brilliant diplomat and terrible economist. unfortunately, turkeys economic problems are quite a bit worse than their diplomatic ones…
Jaquemart@reddit
He's instrumental against Putin.
Thanks to some huge country beyond the sea suddenly siding with him, there's a need for allies wherever they can be found
SunderedValley@reddit
That line of thinking got us Iran, the Taliban, Al Qaeda, ISIS and who knows what other delectable and pernicious assholes seemingly impossible to uproot now.
DefinitelyNotMeee@reddit
How dare they try to stop the war!
Jaquemart@reddit
How indeed. If only Ukraine would give away land, minerals, and sovereignty, everything would be p e r f e c t and Putin could prepare for his next annexation.

Taking some pointers from columbia I see.
Imitation and flattery aside, it's been pretty surprising seeing how blatant erdogan has gotten recently, though I guess arresting political dissidents for terrorism has been the accepted way of doing things for some time now.
Unable_Duck9588@reddit
He’s actually in decline and has lost to Ekrem 3 times, 4 if you count the election they overturned and lost with an even wider gap… but those were all municipal elections.
He was going to be announced as the candidate to run for President this weekend and it really does look like the first time Erdogan may lose an election, so they first took his diploma away last night and then arrested him on trumped up charges this morning.
But protests are happening and they look to get bigger.
Let’s see how it goes.
totallyordinaryyy@reddit
Do you need a university degree torun for president in Turkey?
Jayronheart@reddit
That's very bad, that's corruption.
Mikkelet@reddit
And they want to be part of the EU?
