Does anyone want to sail with my friend from Denmark to Disko Bay, Greenland (5028 km) in July 2025 or 2026?
Posted by icebergchick@reddit | sailing | View on Reddit | 161 comments
I was speaking with a friend, he is from Greenland but going to buy a new boat in Denmark and sail it back to Greenland. He is an expert sailor / skipper etc. and he will do it safely but no one in his family wants to go with. I certainly do not either. It's going to be his new boat but a small 10 seater vessel. He said it'll take 5 or 6 days if you have perfect weather.
You'd go on the boat from DK to Jutland to Faroe Islands to Iceland to South Greenland and then up to Disko Bay
So I'll ask here. Are there any souls out there that are crazy enough to want to go with him? I'll connect you if you find this interesting.

Did your friend do the trip?

I'm also curious to see how many sailors here are from/in Denmark, Scandinavia, or Europe?

Also sailing in Norway! I'm from Italy but i work on ships in Norway and one year ago got me a lovely old 29ft where i live onboard in Lofoten and now in Tromsø on the weeks I'm off. Actually planning to put the sails back on next week!
I kinda wish waters were warmer but only here you can find yourself to be the only boat in the most beautiful anchorages you can ever dream of. Too bad the sailing season is so short.
I do see some crazy people sailing in the middle of the snowstorms from time to time tho!
KnotGunna@reddit
Hey, that’s very cool. 🇳🇴🇮🇹 I was there last year in Lofoten and Tromsø - spectacular and dramatic landscape. See the above comments, was just telling the others above that one of our mods in the sailboats community is on his way from Kirkeness down to Bergen. And another just jumped into 4000M / 15000ft deep water at the equator in the middle of the Pacific.😅

"Small 10 seater" is just a really odd way to describe a boat. What the hell is that?
KnotGunna@reddit
😂 Surely something got lost in translation.
santaklon@reddit
I did this twice the other way around (without stopping in Iceland /Faroer) in an (extremely sturdy and pretty fast) aluminum 60 foot former Whitbread racer. Took us about a months with a crew of 10 people. 5 to 6 days is absolutely delusional.
Generally this is doable if you have the time to wait for good weather between legs, but up there you might sometimes wait a while until that is the case. You absolutely do not want to go around Cape Farewell but through the Prince Christian Sound instead. Also the boat needs to be fit / equipped to handle offshore arctic sailing. On the leg between Reykjavík and Aappilattoq there is some ice and absolutely no help if you get into trouble.
This is not a jurney you undertake with random people from Reddit. And honestly, him estimating this to be a 6 day trip seriously makes me question the "expert sailor / skipper" part.
yelruh00@reddit
Why do you do not recommend going around Cape Farewell but through the Prince Christian Sound instead? Iceburgs and bad weather?
santaklon@reddit
Exactly for thise reasons. The name is not by accident.
yelruh00@reddit
Crazy!
yyzsxm@reddit
I got good life insurance ..
oga_ogbeni@reddit
Concur. I mapped it out and it's 2,400 miles. 5-6 days means averaging 17-20 kts which is unlikely anywhere and damn near impossible in the North Atlantic.
Rino-feroce@reddit
5-6 days? in what parallel universe...
It will be at least 30-35 days of sailing with perfect conditions , not counting some rest days in shetland, faroer, iceland, and along the way in greenland.
yyzsxm@reddit
Sure ! DM me.
vollspasst21@reddit
I have never had any contact with sailing, know nothing about it, never been on this sub before.
This looks both suicidal and hella cool.
juannwall@reddit
Is sailing experience required?
Organization_Dapper@reddit
I imagine there's a good bit of ice floating down from the arctic, even in July, around Nuuk or on the leg past Iceland. As much as I'm interested in a 20-day journey, I have no experience in anything but my warm weather liveaboard in the carribbean.
I sailed on Superior out of Duluth but that won't compare. This seems dangerous but is very intriguing, nonetheless.
icebergchick@reddit (OP)
EDIT: Thanks to all for replying and PM'ing me. I'm overwhelmed by the responses. I will be getting back to all of you in the coming 2 weeks.
In Greenland, they use the term "sailing" for motor boats as well. This journey will be on a motor boat rather than a sail boat. It will probably take at least 10 days with weather (doubtful we will get perfect weather) and the max number of passengers that can attend with him is 4. It will be epic and you can learn more about my friend on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/QeqboattoursApS/
The boat is a motorized vessel similar to Targas that they use in Greenland. https://www.targa.fi/boats/37
lucanator3669@reddit
Yes. Please DM me! I would love the opportunity to gain more experience on longer trips!
pavaanan@reddit
I'd like to say yes for 2026 but only if
- 5-6 days was meant to be something else like 5-6 weeks (even that sounds somewhat low)
- the boat is fit and equipped for the journey
- the skipper knows what they are doing
- there is enough crew and I'd be the least experienced among them.

He's crazy to want to do it. Even crazier to do it with a unqualified stranger.
wkavinsky@reddit
No.
Not least because there's no way a sailboat is doing nearly 6,000km in 5-6 days.
That's 22 knots sustained speed, 24/7.
Impossible, unless your friend is picking up an Imoca 60 or the like.

I'd love to. How do I get involved?
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
What is the risk of hitting chunks of ice in July at the higher latitudes?
OptiMom1534@reddit
In the summer, once you get past Nuuk, there are plenty of ice bergs.
reflect-the-sun@reddit
I've experienced a few growlers in my time
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
As a warm seas sailor I am intrigued and terrified by this :) Does it mean you're always having someone in front looking at the sea like if you were cruising in shallow water?
OptiMom1534@reddit
Yes, not just out in front but all around. We had several long wooden poles wrapped with cloth at one end on board meant for nudging the ice away from the boat. Sometimes we were anchored, and if growlers came over, they would be used to push the boat off the ice, rather than the ice off the boat, as the boat was much lighter than the ice in most instances.
olddoglearnsnewtrick@reddit
Wow, supercool (pun unintended) :) Thanks mate
Alesisdrum@reddit
5-6 days?
StuwyVX220@reddit
Longer than an Atlantic crossing, I’d guess between 5 and 6 weeks depending on the boat and weather. 5kn average would take 23 days
theheliumkid@reddit
Averaging 20 knots will achieve this
madworld@reddit
Is that boat speed or wind speed?
theheliumkid@reddit
Boat speed - so will need a waterline of 70m just ro teach 20 knots
madworld@reddit
Yeah... someone is either overestimating the speed or it's more exotic than we are imagining. A Dragonfly 40 trimaran would seat less than 10 and could average 20 knot speeds in good conditions.
pbmonster@reddit
4 rotating shifts of watch playing blue water racer chicken: the shift taking down the Gennaker loses. Double minus points if its a day watch.

“Small 10 seater.” My 45 is a “4 seater” for a passage like this.
KnotGunna@reddit
You guys are hilarious.😂
StuwyVX220@reddit
2715nm is a really cool trip!
Would I go, yes for sure but I’m already living on a boat with my small family.
OptiMom1534@reddit
I sailed to Disko Bay in June on a 72’ Oyster…. I did most of the west coast of Greenland. I would do it again, the caveat being same boat, same crew.
There’s a lot of special prep for the boat he needs to do for this trip, and exceptional environmental factors that must be accounted for. You can ask me anything, but it’s not your average crossing.
hilomania@reddit
Agreed. But he's apparently experienced and from Greenland. Very different from someone like me f.ex. I am experienced as a sailor, but not in that environment and everything that entails.
OptiMom1534@reddit
I’m certain I would not sail with anyone who thinks it takes 5/6 days to sail from Denmark to Ilulissat… but surely, this ‘expert’ sailor is well connected, and should have no issues finding other experienced professionals to make the passage with.
hilomania@reddit
I sail about 6000 miles from there. There was no reason for me to question that.
OptiMom1534@reddit
I’m certain I would not sail with anyone who thinks it takes 5/6 days to sail from Denmark to Ilulissat… but surely, this ‘expert’ sailor is well connected, and should have no issues finding other experienced professionals to make the passage with.
psychedelicdonky@reddit

International_Bet562@reddit
Yes. I would enjoy that route. Faroe Islands has been on my bucket list as well.
KnotGunna@reddit
Can I ask: where are you based and how come the special interest in Faroe Islands?
International_Bet562@reddit
I’m based in the US currently. I was in the Netherlands and Germany. I intended to visit the Faroe Islands when living in the NL but didn’t make it. The landscape, remoteness, scenery, how wild and exposed makes it seem beautiful. It’s different sailing than typical South Pacific passages or tropical med type cruising.
pbmonster@reddit
I feel like its a pretty standard goal for a lot of Euro sailors. Challenging yet attainable, great natural beauty, great hiking if you're not to much in a hurry to press onward/go back home. Same is true (but to a lesser degree) for the Shetlands and Orkneys you can easily visit on the way.
I mean just google for pictures. It's a pretty unique landscape, and its beautiful.
Mediocre_Captain1242@reddit
Hey, I'd also love to join! I'm 23, from Germany, and have some basic sailing experience, and I can cook and clean;)

BuddytheYardleyDog@reddit
That’s my dream voyage!
diemenschmachine@reddit
5 or 6 days? Expert sailor, hahaa. To do it in 5 days you have to sail 24 hours every day at 22.5 knots. For reference, with my boat in good weather I do about 7 knots.
CorpseProject@reddit
I’d go, but it would have to be 2026 so I can make sure I have the leave off from work. I get 4 weeks a year, but could manage more.
It’s a long shot. I miss the water.
Im adept at moving a 34’ sloop engineless in various places, with the expected mistakes I’ve learned from along the way.
Ruabenzuzler@reddit
You wanted to write 5-6 Weeks?
I was already sailing in Iceland and Svalbard (Spitzbergen), but i see Greenland as the next level.
KnotGunna@reddit
Wow, I've always wanted to go to Svalbard, on my bucket list! How was it? Did you have to arm yourself because of polar bears?
Ruabenzuzler@reddit
I was 4 times up there. The first time was 2014 and the last time was 2023.
It´s really nice there, but much has changed in this time.
2023 i was shocekd about amount of cruising ships up there...
We had to Rifles with us. And we saw polar bears, but only from the sailingboat. ;)
U don´t want to meet them at shore.

55North12East@reddit
Has he bought a foiling IMOCA? If the “experienced skipper” said it can be done in 5-6 days he is absolutely off. That route is insane and no way that can be done safe in less than a month.
icebergchick@reddit (OP)
It sounds crazy to me as well. I hope it's a translation error because English isn't his first language but that's what I believe I heard. Maybe it's 5-6 weeks instead of days?
lofigamer2@reddit
probably weeks I am not an expert tho
jimmobxea@reddit
Does he mean Denmark to Faroe Islands for 5-6 days?
jimmobxea@reddit
Yeah lost in translation or he's incompetent. It might take a small plane up to 5-6 days with stops and maintenance.
InternationalGuide78@reddit
french guy here. Erik Anderaa from the "no bullshit just sailing" YT channel has recently posted a bunch of vids about his several single-handed passages to greenland and 5-6 days seem indeed way off. he took the northern route from feroe to greenland...
https://youtu.be/GOeuugSytzU
just the conditions on the first part of the trip (North sea !) and dodging ice on the south west tip of greenland may prove difficult
anyways, i'd love to embark on such a trip...

I have done Germany to Iceland already, so I know a good portion of the route. We broke the steering along the way and then broke the engine in Iceland, otherwise we would have continued to Greenland.
It's not easy to get specific replacement parts in northern Iceland 😄
How do I apply?
diadem@reddit
Not sure why I saw this post since I'm a layman/stupid ignorant American. I'm genuinely curious why the route is going to Vik instead of Faxafloi bay. Like, isn't the part of Iceland mapped out dangerous? Again I'm a layman and would love an explanation.
