Have you ever faced discrimination based on your nationality while traveling abroad?

Not specifically based on my nationality, but some landlords won’t rent to any foreigner regardless of nationality in Japan (saying they can’t speak Japanese, don’t know the trash rules, aren’t clean, will destroy the property, etc.). It’s illegal to not rent to someone specifically because of their nationality, but no one does anything about it. It’s a widespread, well-known issue that’s just overlooked. We just move on to the next property when it happens.

Never faced discrimination but I tried very hard to learn and speak French while in Paris and everyone kept switching to English even when I said a perfectly comprehensible sentence in French. I lived there for 4 months so my French was pretty decent. One time I tried to order some pastries and they switched to English before I even said a word. They just knew I was American. I wasn’t even wearing a baseball cap or cargo shorts. Their ability to spot an American is unmatched

No. IME only Americans think that Americans are the worst tourists and/or are hated in Europe. Most Europeans I've met would pick Russians, Israelis, Brits, Australians, or maybe South Africans or people from the Gulf States as the worst tourists while they'd say Americans are too loud but otherwise mostly fine.

Yes. Some people will automatically dislike you if you are an American. That is just the way it is.

No. But I definitely noticed that in France: * they were a little disappointed when my white friends and I opened our mouths and turned out to be American. * they were way too relieved when my not-white friends opened their mouths and turned out to be American.

I’ve lived in Japan for 10 years. You’ll be fine as a tourist.
