Trapped Antarctic scientists beg for help after ‘assault and death threats’ from colleague

This article does not include the most important information. This issue was apparently raised while the ship that brought them there, the SA Agulhas II, was still at the base. Nothing was done, and it has now left, leaving them trapped in this situation.

I've wintered over at McMurdo. It is currently fall transitioning toward winter in Antarctica, and depending on how far south they are in the Arctic circle, the last sunset is (literally) on the horizon sometime soon. Once the sun sets, most transport to and from a lot of stations ends, because it is too cold and too dangerous. Some airplane engines won't even start below certain temperatures, making flights out impossible at the extreme low latitudes.
People go real strange down there and it is not uncommon for some folks to have a psychotic break. At McMurdo I heard lots of stories about previous years' experiences.
One year, the last flight out was scheduled to depart and there was a guy desperate to get on that plane -- he changed his mind about thinking he could winter over and wanted out. But the plane couldn't accommodate any more transport weight and he seemed sound of mind so the station manager and doctor said, tough luck. So he assaulted a colleague with a hammer. Because he knew that would guarantee they'd find space on the plane to get him out. One of the station buildings was turned into an improvised prison cell to hold him til the flight could leave.
Another winter there was an actual mutinee at South Pole station in which the winter-over crew (usually only about 40 people) overthrew the station manager. I don't know a lot of details about this one but it was talked about a lot.
There's also a rumor on station that there is exactly one gun on station, hidden in a safe that only the station manager knows the code to. Specifically for purposes of maintaining order in the event of something like a person or people becoming violent and uncontrollable.
It's a strange place that makes people go very strange sometimes.

any more stories??? this is fascinating.

During Covid my twinky Egyptian roommate incurred the wrath of my beefy Kenyan roommate who tried to throw him out a window; so I’d imagine interpersonal dynamics out there completely isolated can get pretty crazy
tatojah@reddit
Yep. That isolation can get pretty tiring. Some years ago I did a six-week voyage on an scientific vessel. By the 4th week, everyone was absolutely ready to get the hell out.
No single conflict broke out the entire voyage, and people didn't seem to have pet peeves or target individuals, but those two weeks felt really tense for no apparent reason. Confinement is bad for humans.
CaptainCosmodrome@reddit
Stories like this make me wonder how we are going to survive long term space travel as a species.
KrishnaChick@reddit
It's not going to happen. It's the biggest grift going.
The360MlgNoscoper@reddit
If you are forced to spend an extended amount of time in a confined space with other people, you’ll either make new friends or new enemies.
tatojah@reddit
Yep, the people aboard OceanGate absolutely cannibalized the shit out of each other.
steppponme@reddit
I just got back from a 4 day conference with my organization. Only 4 x 12-hour days and I wanted to kill myself or someone else.
NearABE@reddit
I get really tense talking to people at work while on a normal shift. A science expedition would be always at work.
Miserable_Law_6514@reddit
Imagine a mandatory group therapy session with your co-workers. You also sleep in the same room as them. For 6-9 months. And everyone has loaded automatic rifles.
-A typical military deployment.
ConsistentAddress195@reddit
You really have mandatory group therapy sessions?
Miserable_Law_6514@reddit
At the end of a deployment yes. Both to socialize you back to normal routine, and to document and changes in your physical and mental states.
YourphobiaMyfetish@reddit
tatojah@reddit
You're not wrong, but in expeditions like that, the line blurs a lot. For one, you don't have much else to do. Either you're working or you're doing other crew work/chores.
If I recall correctly, it's a similar working regime at the Amundsen-Scott. It works well to keep you busy. And I don't think I was there long enough to get "over the hump". Those that were... Let's say their overall demeanor definitely seemed off at the beginning. But that may just be from spending too much time in ships, not necessarily the isolation itself.

hi bob
hughk@reddit
People working at remote places like Antarctica normally get a psych eval. The problem is that two people can be fine with the psychiatrist one on one but not at all when they are together.
ryant71@reddit
I think the psychiatrist who did the psych evals was the same one who did Elon's.
"Totally fine, nothing to worry about, delusions of grandeur not at critical level, no problem, psychopathy within normal serial killer range, cleared for society, perfect for position of unaccountable authority."
ScissorNightRam@reddit
It’s not the first time time:
1913 - “ For some weeks his comrades believed he was recovering but, in September of the same year, the radioman experienced a psychotic break and began transmitting a message, through Macquarie Island, to Australia, declaring himself to be the only sane man on the expedition. Jeffryes accused all of his comrades of having joined a criminal conspiracy to murder him.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Jeffryes
ScissorNightRam@reddit
Also: Jeffryes went nuts towards the end of the already disastrous Mawson Expedition. Read up on that for an amazing story.
zillionaire_@reddit
Excuse me what the fuck
ScissorNightRam@reddit
At one point, Mertz, another member of the expedition, bit the tip of his pinkie finger off.
What happened next is not quite clear (everyone was exhausted and semi-delirious), but he then either accidentally coughed it up onto Mawson or intentionally spat it at him.
ScissorNightRam@reddit
The extreme cold literally tore strips off Mawson's body. One day he felt his feet getting particularly lumpy and sore and, after a mile of trudging through the snow, he took off his boots. "The sight of my feet gave me quite a shock, for the thickened skin of the soles had separated in each case as a complete layer, and abundant watery fluid had escaped into the socks. The new skin underneath was very much abraded and raw."
He did what he thought best in the circumstances – smeared the raw skin with lanoline and re-attached his soles to his feet.“
squidparkour@reddit
There's not enough upvotes in the world to show my agreement with this response.
ERhyne@reddit
Is this the inspiration for at the mountains of madness?
ScissorNightRam@reddit
Not sure. Could be though. Then again, other than Amundsen, pretty much all the early Antarctic expeditions were disasters in some way. And compared to the tale of the rest of Mawson’s expedition, the story of Jeffryes is a footnote.
PrincessBukowski@reddit
Thanks for sharing, something about falling down these historical rabbit holes makes me feel like a kid again.
His poignant plea from the dock was: "Let me go back and die, where I have hidden my trunk, in the silence of the ranges."
For anyone who is also interested in these stories, I really recommend the (fiction) series The Terror, it's on Netflix right now.
ScissorNightRam@reddit
When they finally made it back to civilisation, Jeffryes promptly disappeared. He was found 12 days later in the forest, naked and eating bugs.
oreo-cat-@reddit
Is the Terror based on the Terror?
PrincessBukowski@reddit
Yes! It's a really well done fictionalized thriller about its time as an Arctic exploration ship 20 years after it was retired as a warship.

Oh damn. Never heard about that. Like even when the video was supposed to be neat or fun, there was still a tense atmosphere. At least that was the feeling I got.

There's an early X-Files episode similar to this story: a team of researchers in an Arctic (IIRC) research station discover >!a parasitic worm that makes its host aggressive and forces it to kill others. All the researchers end up killing each other. Mulder and Scully, together with another team of researchers travel there to investigate after getting sent a weird video of one of the original team warning about the dangerous situation at the station. Shortly after arriving there, they discover what happened and are trapped there due to a storm.!<
It's actually one of my favourite episodes.
Baphaddon@reddit
Great episode
MaccabreesDance@reddit
I figure that one was inspired by the Vostok Incident. In 1959 two Soviet researchers were playing chess in a remote research station when one flipped out and killed the other with an ice axe.
Rumors that chess playing was forbidden in all Russian research stations, including the space stations, persisted. But a couple of years ago the ISS started playing Mission Control, so I assume it's cool now, if it ever really wasn't.
ForGrateJustice@reddit
I don't think it has anything to do with chess and everything to do with the fact that that researcher was a murderous sociopath.
Goatf00t@reddit
The rumors are certainly untrue, as Soviet cosmonauts played chess during some of the early Soyuz missions in 1968-1970. https://www.fide.com/chess-in-outer-space/
Their space chessboard designs were interesting. They decided that the pieces floating around could be a hazard, so they didn't even use magnets. Instead, the pieces could not be separated from the board at all - they moved around it in T-channels.
Years later, a Western austronaut took a chess set to the ISS, putting velcro on a commercial chess set. He complained that one of the pieces ended up in the air filters, so those early concerns turned out be somewhat warranted.

This is how that guy ends up dead. If you’re making death threats towards people and we’re in some remote situation like that and help isn’t coming for days or weeks? I’m locking you in a room as soon as I can. If you name threats towards me? I’m going to beat your ass and if it comes to me or you it’s gonna be you allllllllll the way.
Fiery_Flamingo@reddit
It’s so nice to know there are nice people like you in this day, you brighten my day.

No_Meeting8441@reddit
It’s a lot harder to convince them to go outside with you, and who knows what damage they can do to your habitat or vehicles. Locked in a room as there’s only so much they can do. I’m talking tied to a chair. I’ve seen enough Antarctic horror films to know better.

SZEfdf21@reddit
Good luck detaining someone in a not prison for 6 months.
I wouldn't want to completely break down diplomacy with that person either if they're not completely mental yet.
daniboyi@reddit
Diplomacy broke when he assaulted them. If he refuses to calm down, he can be stripped and thrown to the ice.
HarmoniousJ@reddit
I know there's logistics and risk involved but what exactly is stopping them from dogpiling the guy and making a citizen's arrest and jailing them until further notice?
If they're increasingly escalating violence, then hogtie the guy and throw him into a broom closet until you can get authorities out there to intervene?
cl3ft@reddit
I'm not sure science stations have a lockup suitable for imprisoning a violent mental patient.
daniboyi@reddit
Then throw him to the snow and let him die.
Survival at all cost.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
The population gets up to about 1,500 people. You need some kind of security aparatus.
vagabond139@reddit
Yeah you think there would be some kind of security forces there. Like you don't need that many, even 5 could work.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
My fault I got the station wrong. I was thinking McMurdo.
cl3ft@reddit
The winter population is up to 15.
Summer is up to 110.
Movement between stations in winter is limited.
ScaramouchScaramouch@reddit
Sorry that was my mistake, I was giving figures for McMurdo.
HarmoniousJ@reddit
It might not but that's why you need to control the situation quickly and either make something or use an empty room to hold them for everyone's safety.
I'm not talking about what they can do for the future but what they can do for now until backup arrives.
What is the alternative? Let the guy run around and continue to escalate?
QtPlatypus@reddit
Rooms in Antarctic bases are normally made so they can always be opened from the inside. Normally this is for safety reasons as you don't want someone to be accidently locked in a room.
Ainaomadd@reddit
Nail a board that's larger than the doorframe to the outside of the door? Like, this is a stone age level engineering problem, so I think a community of modern scientists and engineers can figure something out.
eddievedderanybetter@reddit
Just a little known feature of rooms in Antarctic bases as well as just about every other room not in a prison 🌠
QtPlatypus@reddit
True that.
ConsistentAddress195@reddit
Bro, these are scientists. Things will have to escalate a lot more before they jump some psycho guy and go vigilante on his ass.
HarmoniousJ@reddit
Isolating him in a closet isn't the same thing as pulling a Batman, dude.
Besides the researchers were making it sound necessary because his violence keeps escalating. At some point they'd need to do it or get someone who can do it.
27Rench27@reddit
I feel like you’d need approval from your country’s justice department or some shit for that though?
I have no idea the legality, but it’d be insane to keep someone in solitary or tied up for potentially weeks or months with no formal approval to do it
jgzman@reddit
If they are worried about being killed, I'd say they need to beg forgiveness, rather than ask permission.
27Rench27@reddit
Oh agreed I mean stop the threat, but it’s not gonna go well when you get back if you don’t have quality evidence behind you
The_Snickerfritz@reddit
I think the sexual assault, regular assault, and threat of death is evidence enough lol. Throw his ass outside and dump a bucket of water on him. Nature will do the rest.
xManasboi@reddit
Not if you think they might stab you in your sleep.
HarmoniousJ@reddit
If the horror movie villain is actively chasing you down, the most sensible thing to do is to cage them and then worry about human rights violations after calling proper authorities.
That's besides the fact I was advocating putting them somewhere where they can't actually hurt anyone. We aren't talking about withholding food out of spite or killing them or anything.
