OhLordyG@reddit
540hp? Holy shit its gonna be quick
Geofferz@reddit
£100-200k though...
armanddd@reddit
It's not "EV quick" because it's RWD. Unlike the Ioniq.
bimmervschevy@reddit
That sounds insane
therealSamtheCat@reddit
No, it doesn't sound.
Geofferz@reddit
Ah, I see
armanddd@reddit
The 5N is also a ton heavier. Not saying the R5 is good value but they are very different cars.
masterventris@reddit
For anyone wondering, this isn't much of an exaggeration.
The 5N is 785kg (1,727lbs) heavier.
This Renault 5 has 372bhp per metric ton, the 5N has 286.
hill_79@reddit
This is the stat that counts
Geofferz@reddit
Eesh
Schnabulation@reddit
I would really love to know how the R5 drives. I own an IONIQ 5 N and I would much rather have a car the size and weight of a R5 but I want AWD. Looking forward to the new R5.
cat_prophecy@reddit
It's cool and all, but who is going to pay over £100,000 for that?
hondaexige@reddit
Lots and lots of people
atetuna@reddit
But no more than 1980 because production is limited.
Threewisemonkey@reddit
Restomods that are worth $300k-$1M+ are pretty fucking popular rn. with how much expendable cash the wealthy have, 100k is chump change for a fun you, especially one that can be driven into any city center in Europe or Asia due to emissions rules, and then thrown around backroads on the way to country house.
Or buy 3 and hot swap them on the track for continuous shenanigans while the other 2 charge.
agileata@reddit
That's is fast as fuck. My god the internet has ruined people
NightFuryToni@reddit
I blame Doug Demuro, he have been rating cars 1/10 that doesn't out accelerate a Bugatti Veyron.
BeingRightAmbassador@reddit
I watched a review where the reviewers called a ~350hp coupe "acceptable". absolutely mentally rotted.
votum7@reddit
It’s so funny too because anybody who actually has a car that have 500+ hp will tell you it’s far more fun to drive a 200hp car on the road. A Miata is way more of a blast to drive than my car.
VivaLaDbakes@reddit
My buddy was looking at getting a new Supra and I started selling him on new Miatas. He test drove a Supra, the Z4 m40i with a manual, and a Miata.
He bought the Miata lol. And saved enough money vs the bmw to buy another Miata if he so pleases. Instead of Miata x2 he's snagged an aftermarket exhaust, wilwood brake kit, koni suspension, and new wheels/tires. I've driven it a few times, it is a blast. A 98 M Roadster popped up on marketplace a few weeks later and I snagged it, also a blast to drive. Any more power than what it has and it's just too easy to approach a 'criminal speed' ticket without even trying.
Brno_Mrmi@reddit
That's a fucking rocket. I don't know what the hell they expect
GimmeChickenBlasters@reddit
Horsepower is meaningless without more context. 350hp is barely more than a V6 Camaro makes and absolutely no one is calling that a "fucking rocket" lmao
KiddBwe@reddit
V6 Sienna has a quarter mile between 15.6 and 17.2 seconds, 2016 V6 Camaro is 13.8…that’s not barely faster at all. That’s significantly faster. Camaro is 5.2 0-60 and Sienna is 7.5…again, not at all barely faster.
I don’t even like Camaros, but what are you talking about?
Brno_Mrmi@reddit
Dude a V6 Camaro is incredibly powerful with less than 350hp
DanielG165@reddit
350HP may not be a, “fucking rocket”, but 300+ horsepower in a performance vehicle is 300+ horsepower. I never feel like I’m wanting for more power in my 2LT RS on the street, and the car never feels like it’s running out of steam, or ever getting close to doing so. Like, it’s a 3.6 liter N/A DOHC V6 with direct injection and integrated headers, with a 7200 rpm redline. It’s a potent ass engine lol.
The fact that we have family vans with over 300 horsepower is supporting the other commenter’s point: that much power on the street is more than enough for 99% of people.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
350 hp doesn’t automatically make anything, even a coupe, a rocket
a 2001 Mercedes CL 600 V12 makes 360 HP and still takes over 6 seconds to get to 60… the ND3 Miata, current gen 86/BRZ, and even something like a past gen V6 Camry all get there faster, and nobody calls those rockets
horsepower is just one factor in the bigger picture
R_V_Z@reddit
That's why I always said the V6 manual F-Type was the best one. Plenty of power for a daily and you got to row your own gears.
Makaloff95@reddit
Fr, a friend of mine had a Audi A3 with around 200 and i personally felt that thing was quick. Same with a colleagues first gen volvo V40 T4
BlazinAzn38@reddit
Nah EVs just sort of pooped on 0-60 numbers and totally ruined context. A Mach E Premium AWD Extended range hits 60 in like 4 seconds which makes it as fast as the Mustang GT.
llamacohort@reddit
While I agree that it's fast, I think it's just not a good aspect to sell the car on. For 0-60 in the £100-200k, the car is not impressive. For under 50k from a Mustang GT or an EV crossover, that's awesome.
This vehicle likely has a lot more to offer in driving experience than something like my Model Y Performance, so it is probably worth the money to some people. But stat lines for cars like this are like comparing horsepower ratings from Porsche and Ford. The Porsche may have less for the money, but it's offering a lot more than transportation and acceleration.
Ftpini@reddit
It was fast as fuck. But Reddit in general seems to love hating on EVs and they’ve developed a blind spot to just how stupidly fast EVs can be now. 3.5 to 60 is fast, but it is nothing special these days.
But that isn’t really where the 3e shines. It’s a drift car with hub motors and RWD. It’s built for something entirely different from drag racing.
strongmanass@reddit
3.5 seconds isn't a headline grabbing figure like <2 seconds. But unless you drag race every weekend, your body is going to be thrilled by that level of acceleration. I doubt most of this sub has cars faster than that.
dsac@reddit
someone argued with me the other day that the reason they picked the M3P over the I5N was because they wanted "the faster car" - as if their ass could tell the difference when they're behind the wheel
1/10ths of a second (or even half a second) is completely irrelevant in 99.999% of the driving situations you're going to be in
ryencool@reddit
M3P looks WAY better than the Ioniq though. I hate that it is, but it is.
bisonboy223@reddit
This is... a take I have never heard before
ryencool@reddit
That the Ioniq looks worse than the model 3? I find that hard to believe unless you're rolling the musk hatred into it.
I like some of the retro, almost cyber punky parts of the ionic, but overall I personally find the the model 3 nicer looking, with better lines.
Schnabulation@reddit
I'm pretty sure the I5N would smoke the M3P on a track - especially a curvy one. The M3P is faster on the straight line but on a twisty road?
strongmanass@reddit
That's the problem with bench racing. Minor differences like that are meaningless to the standard consumer. If he preferred the experience of the Model 3 Performance then fair enough, but buying a car by pulling up 0-60 and quarter mile times and just choosing the fastest for a price seems like such a boring way to buy a car. Straight line performance is just one aspect.
Ftpini@reddit
i mean my car is faster than that and for over 3 years I’ve launched it just about every single day. Because the launch is uncomplicated and makes no noise. It doesn’t draw any attention and is enormously fun every single time.
My mustang GT I used to daily was quite fast and I launched it almost as frequently. But it was loud and getting a perfect launch was rather complicated depending on the road conditions and the temperature. So it wasn’t quite as enjoyable to launch most of the time.
I feel like most people online miss the point of the super fast EVs. It’s not to go win drag races. It’s just to have a stupidly fast car that you can enjoy almost anywhere and without drawing any unwanted attention.
strongmanass@reddit
What I said applies to you. You don't go drag racing every weekend and your body is thrilled by the acceleration you engage in on the street.
My point was if you haven't numbed yourself to brutal acceleration by drag racing all the time (in an environment where you do max acceleration multiple times per day without having to worry about any obstacles, pedestrians, police, then you're probably going to enjoy 3.5 seconds to 60 even if it's not "quick for an EV".
Ftpini@reddit
Yeah we’re aligned. It’s weird. My car is insanely fast, but I still enjoy a 5 seconds to 60 car far more than an 8 second to 60 car. When I went from 4.2 to 3.1 I was a bit worried I’d never feel like a 4 second car was fast again. But that hasn’t been true. At least for me it feels like anything under 5 seconds is properly fast even after launching my M3P 4-5 times a day for 3.5 years.
strongmanass@reddit
5 seconds is about my threshold for fun acceleration too.
How long do your tires last? It sounds like you'd need a new set every 10K miles.
Ftpini@reddit
They made it 21k before they were at the legal limit. I run Pilot Sport AS4 in 245/35ZR20. Funny thing is running 245 instead of 235 dropped the price by $100 a tire.
MrReadilyUnready@reddit
No, EVs have ruined people's perception. 3.5s 0-60 is very good for an ICE performance car, but it's shocking for an EV. I totally get that it's rwd, but the same money gets you a Taycan Turbo that does 0-60 in 2.7s and has 880bhp. The pricing is psychotic, it needs to sub 60 grand.
Trollygag@reddit
Today, a $60k C8 will do 2.9s 0-60, and the $110k C8Z will do 2.6s. Even a now 10 year old C7Z will do 2.9s.
agileata@reddit
It's still very fast
Ftpini@reddit
The 15-20 minute battery life is what has me scratching my head. The car is incredible but that is awfully limited.
The hub motors are particularly exciting as well. I wish more EVs would make the jump to hub motors. They’d handled off road so much better if they could apply power directly to each wheel without having to use the brakes to force the power to one or the other.
strongmanass@reddit
That's par for the course with current battery tech. Track-oriented EVs are designed to last a standard track day session, which is 20 minutes. Most batteries aren't designed for the punishment of a track session where you need max discharge and recharge rate all the time. That causes a lot of resistive heating which cripples performance.
Remember we're in the very early days of electric performance cars. Just a few years ago Formula-E cars couldn't even finish a race. All this takes years of iteration and a lot of investment. Think of when race cars looked like this and helmets were made of leather.
This may or may not be comforting for a prospective buyer of the Renault. But the TL;DR is that's where things are with battery tech at that price point, and manufacturers are still figuring it out. Cars like this are an important step in that process.
Schnabulation@reddit
As far as I know the IONIQ 5 N does the ominous 20-20-20 quite well: Drive for 20mins, charge for 20mins, drive for 20mins. At least that's what Hyundai is telling everyone.
strongmanass@reddit
That's one of the cars I had in mind. It's designed for 20 minute sessions. It'll be a long time before we see EVs at attainable prices that can drive flat out for, say, an hour.
Schnabulation@reddit
Go for it - it‘s an amazing car! I have mine now for about 2 month and love it.
__nullptr_t@reddit
That's not necessarily a great comparison, the EVs may win a drag race but not necessarily a hot lap.
abarthsimpson@reddit
That’s an awesome looking car.
Llew19@reddit
Ah man the price 💀
As someone with a Trophy 300, I'd be first in line for a genuine electric hot hatch! Sadly it doesn't look like the Alpine 290 is going to be an absolute ripper like the RS. It's weird that there's no power mid point - either small hatchbacks with 200ish hp like the Alpine and Mini, or massive/tall cars like the EX30 and Ioniq 5N.
Stick the EX30's power in a normal Renault 5 and I'd buy it, assuming the driver inputs all get calibrated as well as they did with the Trophy
drprox@reddit
I think there will be more to follow the A290. I have an RS275 and following along too :)
PomegranateMain1538@reddit
Wow, that sounds like an insane amount of power for a Renault! Can't wait to see this beast in action in 2027.
bakedvoltage@reddit
i just want a real consumer version of this someday
bennettbuzz@reddit
5 Turbo 2 is my dream car and I have to say if I had the money I’d cop one of these along side it.
Simon676@reddit
Such an incredibly cool car.
emperorduffman@reddit
A lot of manufacturers lost the point of hot hatches. The supposed to be fast affordable cars, not road legal rally cars that cost 100k-200k
Simon676@reddit
Literally the version under this car, the Alpine A290, is exactly that. This is the souped-up race version with a history.
Banana_Leclerc12@reddit
The og renault 5 turbo wasnt affordable at all
AtomWorker@reddit
I'm looking forward to the day we can get a sporty, compact EV that does 0-60 in a reasonable 5-7 seconds but costs under $30k instead of these unicorns that will make the rounds in the auto press for a few weeks and never be heard from again.
Simon676@reddit
Literally the version under this car, the Alpine A290, is exactly that.
JNC123QTR@reddit
There's already a variant of the R5 called the Alpine A290 that should fit that bill
Banana_Leclerc12@reddit
That i bought, fantastic little car
JNC123QTR@reddit
Very nice! Do tell how it goes once you get it!
chlronald@reddit
Really want that in Canada... love the design
noxx1234567@reddit
A new turbo petrol with 530 hp ? Then I read E ..oh it's electric
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
Really wish Porsche hadn't normalized using "turbo" to mean "fast" instead of, y'know, "turbocharged".
Banana_Leclerc12@reddit
What else could they have named this? They made 2 renault 5 turbos before, this is the continuation
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
Literally anything else? There are a hundred designations that mean "sport", "race", "rally", or various versions of "fast af".
Calling an EV "turbo" is like calling a motorcycle "4wd".
Banana_Leclerc12@reddit
This is a homage to a 45 year old renault 5, why change the name? In year 2025 turbo = fastest one
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
Because it doesn't have a fucking turbocharger. Calling anything fast "turbo" is dumb. It's literally specifying a part that isn't there.
If you ordered "Chicken fried rice", and there's no chicken in it, you'd be baffled too. "Sorry man, 'chicken' just means best fried rice now" sounds insane
spotdishotdish@reddit
I think videogames in the 90s had done half of that already
Life_Menu_4094@reddit
And vacuum cleaners, toasters, and other household appliances doing the rest.
ZannX@reddit
You must also hate Superchargers.
Ran4@reddit
Why would you ever want a turbo petrol over an EV? Turbo lag sucks.
Sea-Big-4850@reddit
Quicker to refuel, more engaging to drive, actually have an engine that makes a good noise, you can actually modify them, cheaper to repair if something goes wrong (engine rebuilds are cheaper than battery replacements), EVs have a negligible impact on improving carbon dioxide emissions on a global scale.
oppositelock27@reddit
Maybe he doesn't see the point of six figure carbon fiber bodied "track" car that's dead after 15-20 minutes of track work. Plus it would probably be half a ton lighter as a ICE vehicle.
mastawyrm@reddit
They are claiming 1450kg. So yeah you might be right but at least this isn't a typical 2.5-3ton ev "sports car"
StraightStackin@reddit
It's not the same. The art of driving a car, motorsports, is being one with the rhythm of the engine while you vibrate through every RPM ARRRR ARRRRRRRRRRR ARRRRRRRRRRR ARRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Electric cars are drones on wheels, not the same.
strongmanass@reddit
That's the art of driving an ICE car. With a new kind of car (in modern terms) comes a new way of learning it. The art of driving an electric performance car is in managing the greater instantaneous torque - especially coming out of a corner, in knowing how much regen vs friction braking to use for a given corner to maximize speed as well as battery reserves, in learning how to judge corner entry speed without relying on engine noise.
You may not like or want to learn those things, but they're analogous to learning an ICE car's characteristics.
StraightStackin@reddit
Just sounds like a whole lot of boring. Like I have zero interest in ever taking an electric car on a race track, zero, I'd rather not race at all. Like I said, it's basically a drone and will never be raced in the same class as combustion cars, so I honestly just don't. I cannot think if anything that will bring on the death of motorsport faster than electric cars. Imagine how boring it would be to watch 50 silent Nascars "break wind" past you, I would fall asleep, motorsports, the spectator side, would literally die.
strongmanass@reddit
That's fine, it's not for you and it doesn't have to be. But can you really not imagine that someone else might appreciate it?
Electric race cars are not silent at all. But if race cars were less loud I'd be more inclined to attend motorsport - although it wouldn't be Nascar. I don't care for having to wear ear protection and hearing the synchronized noise and vibration of a couple dozen cars. The vast majority of motorsports fans don't feel that way, and that just means live motorsports isn't for me - which is fine.
8P69SYKUAGeGjgq@reddit
I specifically got an EV because the turbo lag in my GTI was getting annoying, however I drove it again for the first time in a month or two and it was still a hoot, turbo lag and all.
Hippopotasaurus-Rex@reddit
Only improperly sized turbos have lag and suck.
HankSteakfist@reddit
Why would you want a mechanical watch over a quartz or digital?
Geofferz@reddit
But vroom vroom sound good
Religion_Of_Speed@reddit
Went from very excited to annoyed real quick when that dawned on me. Not so much that it's an EV, a little bit that but it's not the main source of my annoyance, it's not a goddamn turbo! I'm not normally one to fight against the changing of language but when the word that's being twisted still holds meaning you don't get to twist it. It would be like if they added N/A to it to mean fast. It's just incorrect and misleading.
rugbyj@reddit
I kid, but an M3 competition for comparison has 530hp.
halexic@reddit
If it would be only pure gasoline engine I would probably reorder my financial plans to see if I can buy it. EV? Nah...

I'm a bit lost in Renaults marketing and branding.
First they remove anything sporty from the brand, including killing off "Renault Sport" branding and announce that sporty cars will be branded as Alpine from now on. They've even released sportier version of Renault 5 already.
Then they show this with Renault logo, not Alpine.
VOOLUL@reddit
I fully expected the Alpine version of the car to be this car. Yet the Alpine version is like, not even that much better. It really is odd. I would have expected a Renault Sport version to be what the Alpine version is, then an Alpine version to be this version.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Ngl 220hp is absolutely enough for me.
I'm too poor to buy one new though and it's hard to justify a lease on a car that's a faster version of what I have now in terms of transportation (yes it's safer and more comfortable yada yada but it's a 4m, 4 seater box still is my point)
Aero06@reddit
This is what I first thought too, but based on precedence, Alpine had an upgraded version of the original Renault 5 that was also less powerful than the actual Renault 5 Turbo. It doesn't make very much sense from a modern branding perspective, but historically it's accurate.
Ghepardo@reddit
This would have been a great opportunity for Alpine to try something new. Why do they need to keep bringing back old cars?
Lord_Seacow@reddit
They mention that in the article, "Well, Alpine is, as the performance division is handling much of the Turbo 3E’s development. The Renault badges are there for the sake of heritage, as Alpine never got its hands on the original mid-engined Turbos, and to proudly position the 3E as the group’s halo model."
TLDR it is essentially an Alpine car, but they are keeping the Renault branding for heritage reasons.
Brno_Mrmi@reddit
It also says Renault Sport (R.S.) on the side window. Is it dead or not? Come on Renault, decide on it
desf15@reddit
The only explanation that comes to my mind is that they really wanted to capitalize on Renault 5 Turbo (and Clio V6) heritage and it would be harder if car was sold under a different brand.

I think this is the coolest electric car to come out. Wish it had the engine from the A110R and a manual transmission but I'm sure it would never be produced as this is more of a marketing exercise for their EVs. Wouldn't be surprised if the carbon footprint was less for an ICE version as I bet a majority of them won't ever reach 20k miles where the break even point would be around. Here is to hoping history repeats itself and they come out with a cheaper more stripped down version after much of the costs have been amortized.

I'd be there for a "Group E" reinterpretation of the Group B rally class for mad electric machines like this. Well I wouldn't actually be there because I'd probably be killed when a car left the track and ploughed into the crowd, but I'd watch it on TV...
killchopdeluxe666@reddit

Honestly, this is one of the most exciting looking cars to me in the last decade. BUT 15-20 minutes in track mode is the reason ppl (like me) aren't sold on EVs yet. Tf would I want a sexy beast like this to just commute in. I have to imagine that 250 mile range would be hypermiling marketing. So probably more like 200 miles normal driving and more like 100 miles for "spirited" canyon carving.
Maybe I'm off, but i distinctively remember my neighbor with a new Tesla get stuck in the mtns when he wanted to have some fun. He was so disappointed in the range drop that he immediately traded it back in.

EviIution@reddit
Renault has a tradition of putting massive Power in tiny and small cars:
Percolator2020@reddit
Maybe the R5 Turbo could be considered massive power for its day. Clio V6 and Megane RS was nothing special in terms of power.
AfroInfo@reddit
The Clio V6 had 355 HP and the Mégane RS has 300 Hp
Both cars weigh less than 1500 kgs
Percolator2020@reddit
Cool story, but the Clio had 230 hp at launch and it was warmed up to 255 hp. 300 hp on the Megane RS, is the same as its competitors and not “massive”.

Alternatively, look at the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo from the 1980s for the direct inspiration. Renault aren't taking inspiration from Hyundai lol

OK, now look up the original Renault 5 Turbo from 1980.

Just because it's a square looking EV doesn't mean that it is inspired by the Ioniq 5N. It doesn't have the same shape, is not a crossover, and is so much wider and more aggressive.
