Where would you go

if you had less than 30 days to plan a relaxing solo trip out of the states for your birthday on a tight budget?
It’s also the one thing you try to do for yourself every year for your mental health.

Thailand. Your ticket might be pricey but everything there will be cheap. I balled out for 2 weeks on a $1000 budget and still had leftover funds. Daily Thai massages, elephant sanctuary, scuba diving (this was kind of pricey), yoga on the beach, and don’t even get me started on the food!

Thailand and Japan are on my list.

I’m going to Japan for my bday and Halloween this year. My friend had gone in January and said it’s VERY rich out there. Just food for thought in terms of budget!
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Yea I’m hip. It’s on my list of future travels but not for this trip because I want to shop when I go and I also want warmer weather. But it’s also doable on a budget! I have family who have. Just depends what you’re there for(:

3k Philippines or Thailand with airfare and hotels 2k Mexico 1k tent camp and take car to beach in Florida
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Thailand is on my list. It just might be too hot for me there right now lol. I’ll probably also wait a little because of the earthquake.
ConsistentMove357@reddit
Philippines has two cold weather destinations. I would skip Thailand for 1 year let them recover

I just got back from Mérida Mexico. My hotel was $34 a night, the flight was $250 nonstop round trip, and the food was award winning gourmet fare!!! I can’t afford to stay in the USA to vacation, but leaving the country was so affordable.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Omg I love hearing good food reviews. I unfortunately am picky so I try to be careful because I know it may come off rude to others. And I agree. I’ve always wanted to go to Miami but I feel like it’s a place where you’ll drop a pretty penny so I’m skipping it for now.
phoenixgirlie29@reddit
You are correct! Miami is very expensive, but there are areas where you can get some good food for good prices. They are not in tourist or posh areas. I used to insure a chain of Cuban restaurants down there, and they were delicious & not expensive. I never liked driving down there because it was so dangerous on the interstate. It’s like the Daytona Speedway with people racing all over the place. I would take the high speed train down there if I ever wanted to go back. You could always go down from Orlando and stay a day or two.
Frosty_Sound7888@reddit
Well idk…but are you on the east coast or west the north or southern side of the country? If east then go to Paris and get on the train and go Vienna or Budapest or Poland and look out the window. Or Dublin and go around. But sometimes you have to get off the grid so go to Tirana Albania, ride the mini van buses south to Vlore all the way to Sarande areas. Take the ferry across to Corfu Greece spend a few nights around the islands then head back home from Corfu.

West coast

I was able to do it for around $2000 going through booking and eating only once per day. I did 3 tours. The money included my flight to Europe. It is not overly budget conscious but found it to be one of the best places in world with Norway an almost tie for first.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Wow. That’s a steal to me. Adding Norway to my list.
sifumarley@reddit
Mexico or Guatemala. Still some really affordable options in both countries. Im a big fan of mexico and for a fun city Guadalajara is awesome, also puebla. If you want the beach check out Sayulita, near puerta vallarta(I havent been in awhile and it has become more popular, but my buddies just got back from a week there and said its still awesome and affordable.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Thank you. I always see breathtaking photos of Puerta Vallarta
packnana17@reddit
Iceland and go to as many thermal pools as you can. Heated bathroom floors everywhere and the people are amazing!!
solardiesel@reddit
I just looked into Iceland myself, seems like you need at least a $3000 budget give or take
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Yes I’d want to have a higher budget but it’s definitely on my list!

Maybe couchsurfing...

I’m going to Barbados this week since I’ve heard from 2 other people that it was super fun! I’m going with 2 other girls. $280 flight, $334/person in total for 4 nights at an airbnb right on the beach
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
I’d love to hear your review once you’re back!

What month would you be traveling?
Outdoors and nature. No crowds. Long sunlight hours. Hiking. Camping. Canoeing. Fishing. Hunting. Summer in northern Canada. Way up north. Get away from it all clear your head. Rejuvenate. See, discover, and experience something new. Things that are foreign to your daily life. New flora and fauna. Wildlife. Breathe clean, fresh air. Connect with nature.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
April. Most likely second week. I was looking into Canada but part of me doesn’t want to be cold right now lol. But reading your review relaxed me.
rosanna124@reddit
I would go somewhere to see art.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
I love art. It has me leaning more towards San Juan
Savola_savage@reddit
I wouldn’t procrastinate and would already have this planned… but central or South America since you on a budget.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
I was looking into Guatemala a few months ago

One of my fave and easy solo spots is Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Easy to get around, great food, super affordable and nice beaches.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
Adding Playa del Carmen to my future travels list.
ShorelineCheryl@reddit
Puerto Rico ! Tropical, no passport needed, beautiful beaches, history, waterfalls, mountains, rainforests, local food and art, still in US! AirBb reasonable, safe, same currency as US, surfing, snorkeling, turtles, bio bays, Sea glass, shells, Very tourist friendly.
iykyk4@reddit (OP)
How much would you say to expect to spend on food for a week?
MyGrandmasCock@reddit
Yeah San Juan is an incredible city. I worked there four a couple months and the city and the whole country are all amazing. Met so many friendly people, went out to some really fun bars and restaurants, great beaches on my days off, and a swell hit a couple times while I was there so I scored some great surf. I heard the local surfers weren’t friendly and that was the exact opposite of my experience.
Quirky-Choice5815@reddit
We go to Playa Del Carmen MX. You can get a hotel room for $30 a night that is right on 5th Ave. The beach is 2 blocks from 5th Ave. You can catch the Collectivos out by the highway. For a couple of dollars, you can travel up and down the highway. You have Mayan ruins, cenotes, the beach, great food, and plenty of live music and late night fun. If the train is running, you can head over to Chitzen Itza and all over the peninsula.
If you get off the strip you can find some great food cheap.
tamarind-jam@reddit
Just recommended this spot. I love this city and have been visiting for years now. ♥️

I hear Zurich is great!
Crazzul@reddit
The Balkans are nice and have a lot you can do on a budget, Croatia is a bit pricier though. Slovenia actually has a school to train tour guides etc to increase tourist rates, Romania has some beautiful castles and countryside. People are friendly and food is good. Serbia is nice too.
Be careful with Bosnia and Kosovo- Bosnia can just be a little unsafe as a solo traveler and the Kosovo drama can make crossing back over to another country after entering it a lot more difficult
z_la_flare@reddit
What is your budget
myseaentsthrowaway@reddit
Maybe Mexico. Which coast are you nearer to? Some of the Caribbean islands are pretty affordable.
