Standing desks are great for ergonomics. Here is a study showing the benefits: https://www.uclahealth.org/safety/ergonomics/office-ergonomics/sitting-standing-workstations Here is an option for you to consider: https://www.autonomous.ai/standing-desks/autonomous-smartdesk-5

If I can sit I don't care, but if I have to stand all day I'm going to be mad at someone.

I like the raised desk but wished my chair would rise with it. Not to sit on it, more for leaning.

WorldlinessUsual4528@reddit

Depends on the role in IT. Back when I was a tech, it would have been useless because I spent more time away from the desk and the few times I was at the desk, I wanted to sit. Now that I'm at a desk 90% of the time, I definitely use the standing feature. Otherwise my whole body just hurts when I sit too long. I bought one for home too

I never understood the appeal. I am tired enough, and when I am at a standing desk, I feel like I am leaning on a lunch counter. It reminds me of when I worked at Big Box Company as a cashier. We were not allowed to sit, and we had to stand there at attention, even when there was nobody in the store. My feet hurt after a while, and my dogs won't leave me alone because they think I am about to take them on a w-a-l-k.

Sitting all day I get tired from the head up. Standing, it's the other way round But of course, you don't sit/stand in the same position for al 8 hours. Vary ig6

View on Reddit #51005794

Fliandin@reddit

IT doesn't have them in my office yet, but they have been making the rounds across the company as each area is remodeled. Those that don't have a use just leave them in seated position all the time, 1-2 people leave them in standing position all the time, the rest move them as they see fit on any given day. I personally would love one, especially for the days that I'm in and out of my office endlessly, would be nice to be able to walk in punch some things and walk back out to the next whatever. And I've not doubt my team will get them when the remodel makes it to our side of the building.

I agree, but it also appears to me that approximately 25% of people who request standing desks, don’t use them once the new wears off. I even have people requesting them be removed, which means more work for my team. In a previous job, the facilities team was responsible for standing desks. Their policy was that a standing desk would be provided to anyone with a doctors note. I like that because it’s just enough friction that the people who capriciously want things and have no self-awareness may leave it alone.

I have a sit stand conversion desk and it’s great. I sit for about five minutes an hour or if I’m deep in thought of something but otherwise I tend to just walk around my desk thanks to Bluetooth headphones. Also easier to do stretching and little exercises to keep my mobility. My back thanks me for sure.

I have one and love it! I'm on my feet a lot during the day, often in and out of my office. I found that keeping it up during the day saves me from back pain by bending over to use the computer from time to time throughout the day.
View on Reddit #51126602

CodeSpike@reddit

My motorized desk made a world of difference for me. I'm 60 now and all of years of working at a desk was catching up with me. I bought a motorized desk and started standing for at least 15 minutes every time my watch said "time to stand". I even added a balance board. My back hurts less and I have more energy. When I visit the office I usually see about 1/4 of the people standing at their desk at any one point in time.
View on Reddit #51123142

H1king33k@reddit

My office went through the trend of about 90% of the staff getting standing desks around two years ago. I think there is still one person who uses it in stand-up mode. For the rest of us it's pretty much a very expensive monitor stand.
View on Reddit #51123113

themightydraught@reddit

I've been standing at work for over 10 years now. I have terrible posture when I sit down at a computer, and didn't want to end up looking like Mr Burns when I got older. At first I alternated between sitting and standing a few times throughout the day. Raising and lowering the desk got to be a pain because it was hard to get the desk back to just the right height, so I quickly switched from a normal desk chair to a bar height stool so I could keep the desk raised all day. It probably took 6 months before I was standing full time. Haven't looked back.
View on Reddit #51103951

Having a sit/stand choice has damn near fixed my back. Having to go onsite and use a chair is torture. I use a little kickstand looking stool at home when I'm not standing.

View on Reddit #51090431

Sad_Dust_9259@reddit

Standing desks are just regular desks that decided to show off. Sure, I got one once, thought I’d be one of those ‘active work guys.’ Cut to me, three hours later, sitting on a stool because standing is exhausting. So yeah, get one if you want, but just know… you’re probably gonna end up sitting anyway.

Love them. We actually buy the stand up desk bare bones from Amazon and then attach the desktops to them. Runs about $150-$250. Verses if you get them from the office furniture provider you can pay thousands.

I've been using standing desks for years - used to build then out of Server boxes Now I do office fit outs and generally, these are 100% electronic sit stand desks as standard
View on Reddit #51086798

ccosby@reddit

We have them all over the company including in IT. I’ve seen people adjust them to a height they like but that’s about it. Most don’t use the standing function. I just randomly go for quick walks around the office or building a few times a day to get away from sitting. The one exception is there is an office behind the system engineering one that we will use for calls. One of those desks is usually at standing height. Generally don’t mess with it if I’m using it.
View on Reddit #51084052

View on Reddit #51082068

people_t@reddit

My team has motorized standing desks and we have had them for a few years now. I can count on one hand the amount of time I have seen anyone stand. They are nice because you can adjust the height to what you want. From an IT perspective with standing desks, always keep cable lengths in mind and anywhere a cable could get kinked.
View on Reddit #51005976

MorpH2k@reddit

Yeah, they're great, I've had one at pretty much all of the jobs I've had, as well as at home. I don't stand much at all, which I probably should do more, but being able to adjust the height of it is great and if I need to access the cables underneath, I just raise it so I don't have to crawl on the floor. Highly recommend bundling all the cables up with Velcro or even better a cable sleeve and making sure there is enough length to raise it fully.
View on Reddit #51077992

sgt_Berbatov@reddit

We're the same. After the novelty only the hard core people who are having problems use them. The rest just sit at them. Personally I've tried the standing desk, I find them weird and uncomfortable. I'm 6ft 3 and I feel the desk is about 2" too short for me. It means the top of the monitors aren't in my eye line.
View on Reddit #51073314

fizicks@reddit

I have always found it simpler to have fixed height standing desks with higher desk chairs. And I'm with you in that we don't see as much standing as you would think based on how adamant people are about needing these desks, but at least with fixed height desks my gut says they're more likely to use them while standing since that is the default.
View on Reddit #51069553

Ok_Conclusion5966@reddit

ive seen people use them, the trick is to keep them in the standing position the majority of the time, force yourself to stand up and improve your posture, go to a meeting room or another area when you wish to sit
View on Reddit #51068532

cisco_bee@reddit

Last company I worked for, all the engineers had motorized standing desks. They used them fairly often. Besides, you're kind of missing the point. I had one too, but if you walked by my office, even regularly, you might think "He doesn't even use it". I would use it probably 20 minutes a day. But this was a huge deal. If I'm in the zone and my ass starts hurting, instead of going for a walk and losing momentum I just raise the desk and stand for a bit, then sit back down. Nobody wants to stand for 8 hours, but nobody wants to sit for 8 hours.

No little ones here, and my cables hang down low off the side. I have a desktop mounted power strip with USB ports for all my hot swap devices and laptops, and more permanent items are plugged into the UPS resting on the floor with extension cables to mount them under the desk proper. Electric ones rock. I keep having to get up to go look at shit and then come back to my desk, only for someone to need me to go look at shit right after I sit down. I'm way more motivated to go look at shit if I'm standing already vs if I have to go look at shit after I just sat down. Plus, cable management is super easy, get a power strip mounted under your desk and then you'll never worry about cable lengths. Also, you can raise the desk so you don't need to crawl under it to wrangle cables. Electric ones are awesome.

Another thing, is, I can get on a ticket that is on a wild goose chase of bread crumbs with investigating things on the network as it is, and standing keeps me from truly focusing on that. If you want a standing desk, go for it. Or are you asking about funding standing desks, which can be expensive? That's trickier. I do think it's worth pointing out that recent research seems to indicate that standing in the same spot all day is not much better than sitting, and can lead to a different set of problems. The key really seems be moving, not just standing or sitting.

We got them. A member of staff had a medical issue that meant sitting for long periods wasn't great, and then a few others asked if they could have them and then this lead to basically the 6 IT desks being standing desks at one site. Electric, button controlled with memory settings. To begin with, most people used them. then gradually over the next year, most people went off them, and just sat. One colleague still does it every now and then if his sciatica is playing up, and that's about it. I would recommend getting the standing pads as that makes them a lot better. Also, don't get one that goes on top of a normal desk. We tried a few different types of those, and it's been universally agreed between the team that those are rubbish and more effort than they're worth.

We have motorized desks for all users in the building. Most users never use them standing, but from my surrounding area of 15 people 5 or so use them sometimes. I do too. Sometimes i can go for weeks without raising it to work standing. But sometimes it is almost every day. Depends on my mood, work load, temperature, back, etc. Usually during summer it is warmer and i start to sweat while standing :D Also, usually i only work standing maybe 1 hour on average per day, sometimes longer. If i have some intensive work to do, i don't do it standing. I am getting more comfortable working this way, but still, something in my head just doesn't click, my hand movement with mouse feels weird while standing. And i can't stand still for a long time, so i am changing legs all the time and all this movement distracts from work, but doing some monotonous simple work is fine or reading something or doing a call.

Everyone always wants a standing desk to sit down at, it blows my mind. Being a male IT guy and handy I'm always elected to install said desks and reconfigure all the cables. They'll try it for a week and then never touch it unless they drop something under their desk. This is the standing joke amongst most managers and executives at companies I service. I'm all for adjustable monitor stands and ergonomic peripherals. Don't get me started on the ball chairs either. Do any of the people who request these things use these at home? No. Nobody really wants it, they just want to feel special.

My thought on it, is the same for everyone we have ever ordered them for. 99% use them for about 3 days in the standing position, and then never again. So in general we are resistant to order any of them, and the c-suite are working on a policy which I'm sure will be overly complex and annoying on how to insure that if you are ordering one you are committed to using it. Jokingly I suggested that we just say if you want a standing desk, you have to give up your chair, and more than one of them took me serious.

Standing desks - just like Big Rubber Ball "chairs" and 10,000 steps are nothing but the latest consumer "health" marketing bs. Recent studies show that standing desks offer little to no real health benefits - it's still just better to get up and walk for 10 minutes every few hours and that doesn't require an expensive fad "stand up" desk. Like every other scam - it includes just enough pseudo sciene to make it seem "real". Sitting bad so standing MUST BE good - right?

I’ve been overly short and affirmative in my statement. Let me elaborate: I bought a standing desk for my house with the strong and profound conviction that I would use it constantly. I feel like even with the best intentions (like me) most people stop using their standing desk. It is better to simply make a cup of coffee, stand up, and stretch than to use a standing desk. Also, you need to be mindful of your posture while in standing mode. If you put all your weight on one leg, it can actually be more harmful than stay sit.
View on Reddit #51018076

Hotshot55@reddit

> Also, you need to be mindful of your posture while in standing mode. If you put all your weight on one leg, it can actually be more harmful than stay sit. I think the general recommendation is to switch between sitting and standing every 30 minutes. Staying in any static position for a long period is probably going to be detrimental to some degree. Basically every desk at my office is a standing desk and people are constantly using them, some people even prefer to stand almost the entire day.

A treadmill setup can also be much better for your back. I've got disc degeneration in my lumbar area and my doctor advised against standing in one spot for extended periods because remaining stationary kept pressure on the affected areas and exacerbated the condition. (He actually didn't have to warn me, it was excruciating!) Walking, on the other hand, helped keep those joints from locking up and strengthened the muscles supporting the area to improve things over time.

We have motorized desks in our office. At first it was just for a select few, most who already had a history of back pain, but when the offices got remodeled _all_ became motorized. Some colleagues choose to never lift them and sit all day, others (me included) work standing about 25% of the time. Get the electric ones (or if the budget doesn't allow it get the turn crank ones) to allow staff to adjust as their fitness levels allow it. Standing desks are great, but being locked in is awful. Also, It should note, that the weight limits on a standing desk should not be trusted. as the gears wear down from use their weight limits are more inclined to fail as it fails to lock in after an adjustment or a moving part wears down and snaps. Don't let staff stack servers on them. Don't let staff stand on them. Otherwise they're great.

Maybe ask who would be interested in it and order that and maybe a couple more in case they need replacing or some people change their mind and see where it goes from there. But in terms of use I work from home IT and use it very frequently and noticed a substantial change in how much energy I have for the day if I spend at least a quarter of my standing. Basically after closing a ticket or solving an issue that forced me to sit focused for more than hour I stand for half the time after while taking care of other issues. I feel at the end of the day enough energy to actually put in to doing a workout in the garage, and it just compounds from there, but this is just from personal experience mind you.

I love my sit-stand desk and everyone in my office has one. I use it about half the time I'm at my desk for about 30 mins to an hour at a time.

I have a standing desk in my office and at home, while I don't use it to work standing in it it's still nice to use. If I want to work on pcs i can lower the desk, if i want to plug something in the desk goes up. also I'm 1.93m and most "normal sized" desk are to low, not a problem with a standing desk.
