The older I've gotten, the more I realized, I don't really like The Smashing Pumpkins. Of course given that I can't actually give a clear reason why, I can't fault anybody else for disagreeing.

I love opera and enjoy the Smashing Pumpkins so I'm open to this. I imagine this will be the only opera that will have age appropriate men in attendance.

Thom has adapted *Hail to the Thief* for a Hamlet stage production this year. I've always been curious about what Trent could do with *The Downward Spiral*, so here's to hoping for that.

Eh... I feel like I'm in the extreme minority in this subreddit as I just really am not a big fan of this album. I remember way back in the day thinking it would've been a great single disc album because half of it was basically filler. I mean, I liked Smashing Pumpkins for a bit, but this album was the end for me. Few good songs, sure. But a whole bunch of stuff I would skip today.

Well I’m here to confirm that your memory of the album still holds up. My best friend of 35 years and I get together once a week to rank the songs from 2 different albums. Just a fun little thing we do. We have loved discussing music since being teens in the 90’s. Last Friday, Melloncollie was the album being ranked. At the end of revealing our rankings to each other, I made the same exact comment to my friend. That if the best songs were combined into just a single album it would have been a powerhouse. Indeed I felt that there was a decent amount of filler.

WeepingKeeper@reddit

I'm not sure that I would agree that the rest is "filler". I'll admit I'm a huge fan of the band. However, I think that the album in its entirety shows the range of the band. What band at the time made songs like "Tonight, Tonight" with strings, "1979" which had electronica influence, (which was up and coming after 1994 when MCIS was recorded), metal like "Tales of a Scorched Earth" and then a song I can hardly categorize like " We Only come Out At Night"? I don't necessarily love each of these styles, but that's kind of the point. There is something for everyone on that album. It is so diverse. That's what makes it epic to me.

Trying to do a complete listen today. I'm almost done with disc 1. I get a feeling my opinion will still be similar.

I'm with you. I liked Siamese Dream, but this one was way over hyped imo (and yes, art is entirely subjective).
View on Reddit #50897382

elpintor91@reddit

Agree. I think Siamese dream is the superior album but I think the cover art and cd booklet of Melon Collie had a lot of influence and is “peak” 90s/nostalgia for a lot of people. Though I remember I’d always get kinda creeped out as a child looking though it. That one and the Blind Melon one with the bumble bee girl lol

I’m still wrapping my mind around the comment I read describing Billy Corgan as a sentient kazoo, and I can’t un-hear it now

I love how much other xennials love Mellon collie , it’s hard for me to overstate how influential this album was in me in 1995

Smashing Pumpkins and Sublime are two major parts of my generation that I just could not get into. Usually I say, “I don’t like them, but I appreciate them.” This is not one of those times.
View on Reddit #50895313

Greymeade@reddit

The Pumpkins' first two albums are extremely solid. They're worth a fresh listen.

I’ve heard the same thing about the Bible. Just keep reading it until you like it. Even if everything in your mind and body tell you otherwise. haha.
View on Reddit #50916888

Greymeade@reddit

Have you actually listened to them though? They're just solid early 90s alt rock albums. There's really nothing to dislike lol

Yes, many times. And that’s okay.

I enjoyed SP at the time, but I definitely feel like its one of those bands were its marketing was "Billy Corgan is a genius" non-stop when he wasn't any better than his contemporaries. Now fast forward 30 years and Corgan is non-stop complaining that nobody is saying that about him anymore. I owned Mellon Collie and enjoyed it, but even at the time I felt like there was a lot of filler songs in it.

The SP was overplayed by my neighbor, who was obsessed with them. I will skip their songs on Spotify.

I never really liked this album as much as it seems everyone else did. Really preferred Adore.

Gish and Siamese Dream were good albums. Mellon Collie had its moments, but Corgan was already shifting into full-blown insufferability by that point. He won't get any more ego strokes from me.

Yes, I actually just remembered that ill-fated Spider-Man musical (I think it was a musical?). I appreciate the creativity that must have gone into something like that, though.

Ditto. Saw the original version of it with the Greek Chorus. I hear it got changed up a bit (before ultimately getting shut down).

I think this will end up being a beautiful collaboration. Watched a video from Billy explaining that he was actually the strings composer for MC too. Anyone else remember the MTV awards show that opened with a full orchestra and the Pumpkins playing \*1979\* ? It was pretty epic
