But when governments do absolutely nothing to protect workers from insane abuses and criminal pay practices... I can see why such things might happen.

People forget that unions were most definitely not the peaceful solution originally. They were also initially formed to push blacks, women, and immigrants out of the labor pool. It took almost 100 years for unions to start being about workers' rights and not simply about better conditions their limited group.

Here’s a WGN news article about the slaying.

tldr: He was stabbed in the neck at the ATG headquarters and then the building was set on fire. Driver was arrested at a truck stop in Michigan shortly after. CEO was born in Macedonia and lived in Lyons, IL.

I looked into this company expecting to see that it’s a shady 1099 since the CEO is an Eastern European running a trucking business in Chicago. But their website says they hire company drivers at .60 a mile. They only haul reefer.

ATG looks like a small company. I count 14 trailers on their yard from google maps. For what it’s worth, if this guy’s primary residence actually is Lyons - that’s a working class suburb in the bungalow belt. It’s not exactly the first place one thinks of when hearing the word CEO.

Depends on how he structured the legal side. More and more common to build a corporate structure for better protection if your business goes tits up even at smaller sizes. But yeah, most people hear CEO and think multi billion dollar companies.
