ReadyWhippet@reddit
The ship is the Queen Elizabeth II, if you're interested.
icybrain37@reddit
either your old (to remember this shot) or love history...
everything in this shot is British. Concorde, RAF Red Arrows (escorting) and QE2
Either way, answer is correct
knorkinator@reddit
Not to be a party pooper, but Concorde is 50% French.
probablyaythrowaway@reddit
Yeah but so it Britain…. If you go back enough 🤣
icybrain37@reddit
True
But British livery... British Airways
If remember correctly, that tail livery is mid-to-late 80s/early 90s
I personally thought/recognize the Brits was more proud of the Concord than the French. Or the reality, the Brit Airways had a bigger marketing budget.
Then again, able to watch this plane take off and land at JFK everyday...
LazerWolfe53@reddit
The Brits were just more surprised they built a plane. Meanwhile even in English half of the parts of a plane have French names.
Quaiche@reddit
The French are absolutely nostalgic of the Concorde.
sofixa11@reddit
Why? Definitely doesn't feel that way in France.
icybrain37@reddit
Guess because I know more (and been to) Britian than France 😆
But no lie, love seeing the Concorde siting there at CDG
JamesInDC@reddit
Yeah but who won the Battle of Agincourt, I ask you? Who?
shwhjw@reddit
And you can only see 50% of the Concorde in this photo, can you not?
UmbraIndagator@reddit
So too are the English.
Hyperious3@reddit
just like the British (even if they don't want to admit it)
Majestic-Rock9211@reddit
Well I’m so old I remember the Red Arrows flying Gnats before Hawks ( in the pic) - so how old am I?
icybrain37@reddit
depends how you want to accept this answer -lol
Gnats went concept somewhere in the early 50's to actual (test flight) start of the 60's(?) and from there, EOP/EOL start of the 80s
Some of this I know directly... other is historical knowledge.
So without searching when the RA was formed, at your youngest, mid-to-late 60 or at oldest early 80s.
so yeah you're old -lol
ArsErratia@reddit
Including the ocean.
Ca6Ko2@reddit
Damn, even the water? Must be true that Britain rules the wavy
HortenWho229@reddit
What kind of ship is it if I’m not interested?
andysniper@reddit
Technically it’s Queen Elizabeth 2, not II. It’s the second ship called Queen Elizabeth, not named after the late Queen.
Hattix@reddit
Named because it replaced the original RMS Queen Elizabeth.
WelcomeWagoneer@reddit
How much are you askin'?
ReadyWhippet@reddit

scotsman3288@reddit

That's an awesome pic \^\^ Love the Concorde, just wish I had the chance to see one of them in flight T.T
Theleaf2805@reddit
For a moment I thought OP owns the ship
Beois@reddit
I had a framed photo of this signed by all the pilots and the captain of the QE2 and either my mother sold it or it got lost in our move across the Atlantic ocean. It upsets me to think about that still.
That-Makes-Sense@reddit
Of course that's not a mine. It looks nothing like a mine.
Alps_Useful@reddit
Don't believe everything you see online, but I do believe it's not OPs shit
KaiserSosey@reddit

ReagenLamborghini@reddit
Then how do you explain not owning that ship?
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
I own part of it
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
I own one bolt of the ship
ReagenLamborghini@reddit
Prove it. Show us the deed to the bolt.

Ok

richsu@reddit
Kinda shitty to post pictures of things you sont own OP.
Buy Queen Elisabeth 2, a Concorde and 9 training jets, then you can post here.
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
Ye im so sorry
gymnastgrrl@reddit
No reason to apologize to Mr. West.
MaryBerrysDanglyBean@reddit
They're the red arrows. Not training jets, but for aerobatic displays
richsu@reddit
Still training jets though, which is what the red arrows fly in this picture. 😉

Which one is yours
Omychron@reddit
That “a ship” is the QE2.
interwebzdotnet@reddit
So it's the queens ship, like OP said, it's not his.
Vau8@reddit
Nah, she's just QE2, not HMS.
Harachel@reddit
To be pedantic, HMS is only for Royal Navy ships. Queen Elizabeth 2 is a Royal Mail Ship (RMS).
Vau8@reddit
:)
wlonkly@reddit
No, QE2 is the ship, or the queen, but not the queen's ship.
AccountNumber478@reddit
Reddit should at least demand OP showcase his own ship and not some dead lady's.
benchley@reddit
Is the the line to claim OP's dead lady's ship?
camwow13@reddit

SyrusDrake@reddit
I was fortunate enough to embark on her younger sister, Queen Mary 2, many years ago. The crew made it very clear she's an ocean liner and not a cruise ship.
camwow13@reddit
That would be super fun, hope to do that one day. The last ocean liner! Hopefully they make another whenever they retire her in the far flung future.

well, Concorde was a joint Anglo-French project, developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) in France and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) in the UK, with both countries sharing resources and risks in its design, development, and manufacture, so that particular one could of come from either Britain or France.

"A ship"
gogstars@reddit
Concorde has the same number and base design of engines as HMS Invincible (aircraft carrier) of the same time period (yes, seriously, they both used 4 Olympus turbine engines).
Takes a lot of energy to force something up past the sound barrier.
ell_wood@reddit
My old man, Ex-RAF, was involved in getting this picture. He was not a pilot but a supply officer and was part of the planning team. One of his besties was a Red Arrows pilot.
By all account - the 'window' for this shot was very very small indeed. To get all of the elements lined up was tricky enough given relative speeds/locations/capabilities of the various things, but to do it on a clear day and with another plane (the one with the camera) was entertaining to say the least.
I seem to remember the full version also had a train in it in the foreground - but maybe my memory playing tricks with me.
He has had a copy of it on his toilet wall for as long as I can remember.
rycklikesburritos@reddit
Wait, why are there contrails from only 4 of the planes?
cougar0508@reddit
It’s smoke
rycklikesburritos@reddit
It's it just for visual effect?
cougar0508@reddit
Yeah, the red arrows use red, white and blue smoke
rycklikesburritos@reddit
Ohhh, neat. Thanks!
NZRSteamSniffer@reddit
The ship is the gorgeous Queen Elizabeth II.
Total-Improvement535@reddit
Crazy how far we went with transport in the course of about 50 years, only to be stagnant 50 years later.
TheBestAtWriting@reddit
i saw this post and then i said "hey, the wording in that makes it sound like he's specifying it's not his ship, i should respond gently mocking him" and then i saw there were 292 other responses so i said "someone probably made my joke already, but i'll take a look to be sure", and then i took a look and saw that roughly 50% of the responses were the exact same joke. so i'm curious, sociologically, why everyone feels compelled to make the joke that's already been made.
also, while we can reasonably assume that the concorde isn't flying over a mine, since the mine would be underwater there's no way you can state that definitively
gmfthelp@reddit
You mean the QE2?
AddictiveMeatball44@reddit
well if its not your ship i suppose the concorde is yours then?
UnbundleTheGrundle@reddit
You should have chosen the mystery box
a_scientific_force@reddit
“A ship.” I suppose that’s technically not incorrect.
Ruby_and_Hattie@reddit
G-BOAG returns to flight and flies with Red Arrows & the QEII, 25th April 1985
An amazing shot considering how long ago this was.
Red 11 carried Arthur Gibson the photographer and was flown by Ray Thilthorpe.
OUsnr7@reddit
It’s clearly below a ship
Mindslicer6@reddit
"On the 2nd May 1969, QE2 departed for her maiden voyage. This was also the same year as Concorde's first flight. This iconic image of Concorde, Royal Air Force, RAF Red Arrows and QE2 was hailed as 'the photograph of the century'."
Constant-Estate3065@reddit
Build a Concorde, build a QE11, invite the chaps from the Red Arrows to do a bloody good fly past, take a bloody good photo and celebrate with tea and crumpets. Jolly good.
RevoltingHuman@reddit
This is not from that date, however. At launch, the QE2 had a slimmer white funnel.
The Red Arrows only started using Hawks in 1980 and British Airways didn't exist until 1974, with Concordes not entering passenger service until 1976.
DietCherrySoda@reddit
Lol photograph of the century...
Cool photo? Sure. Probably not the photograph of the month, though.
Mindslicer6@reddit
Yeah like I said to another commenter, this is just the info I found about it when doing a reverse image search. Not my personal take on the photo.
ParticularCod6@reddit
On July 20th 1969 (so a couple months later) would be the moon landing. I would say that's more apt for "photograph of the century"
Mindslicer6@reddit
Oh I agree, this is just what I found when Google reverse image searched
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
Ohhhh thats why it looks so majestic

No. Her majesty is the Queen.

COmarmot@reddit
Wouldn’t this ‘escort’ fleet destroy the laminar flow for the concord? I get they are breaking the wind which is fuel efficient for the concord, but still, lift requires laminar flow.

I thought so.
Carbon-Base@reddit
Fun fact: The Concorde (2,179 km/h) has a maximum speed almost two times greater than the Folland Fo.144 Gnat (1,120 km/h) the Red Arrows are using in this picture!
zk-cessnaguy@reddit
Those are BAe Hawks, the Gnat’s.replacement.
Carbon-Base@reddit
Yup, updated. I didn't realize the picture wasn't taken during the maiden Concorde & QE2 voyages.
Distantstallion@reddit
Like Tiny Temper, "I'm pissed I never got to fly on a concorde"
MidCathedral@reddit
I was just on a flight out of Heathrow and saw the Concorde parked there near some hangers. Had no idea it was there, really surprised me to see it.
BreadstickNICK@reddit
This picture is fucking badass!!!! There’s a few more photos of the Red Arrows escorting other craft but none are this cool.
lordtema@reddit
And not only escorted by the RAF but by arguably one of the most iconic display teams in the world, the Red Arrows!
Carbon-Base@reddit
Are the Red Arrows piloting Hawk T1s in this picture?
Freddan_81@reddit
Yes.
Carbon-Base@reddit
The Hawks were introduced to the RAF in the late 70s though.
Freddan_81@reddit
Yes, so? The Reds have flown Hawks since 1979.
Carbon-Base@reddit
If this is the maiden voyage of the QEII and maiden flight of the Concorde, then this picture would have been taken in 1969-1970. That's about a decade before the Hawks were flown by the Reds.
I'm thinking the Reds are flying the Folland Gnats here. What do you think?
Freddan_81@reddit
That it isn’t the maiden Voyage of QE2.
According to this site the photo was taken in 1985. Well into the Hawk era.
Carbon-Base@reddit
Ah gotcha, thanks for clearing that up!
Freddan_81@reddit
Also, look at the white trim along the fuselage. It is visible above the wings. The Hawk got a low wing, the Gnat got a high wing…
If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…we have to at least consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the anatidae family at our hands…
Or in this case, a Hawk.
Carbon-Base@reddit
Haha, true that!
Yeah, I didn't even look at the picture. I was trying to match the dates up, hence the confusion.
Now that you mention it, the nose and cockpit are more blunted and abrupt in the picture which is in-line with a Hawk. The nose of a Gnat is more conical and straight.
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
Yeah its rlly a cool and once in a life time photo

Well if that were to happen, the ship could simply be towed out of the environment
KinksAreForKeds@reddit
Into another environment?
aHeadFullofMoonlight@reddit
No, no, towed beyond the environment, that way it’s no longer in an environment, there’s nothing there.
Peregrine_89@reddit
OK than I'll claim the Concorde
kaptain_sparty@reddit
OUR ship comrade
Jonny_Entropy@reddit
That's not your Concorde?
02nz@reddit
That’s a totally fake pic. In any real picture taken from that perspective, the ship would look tiny.
practicalcabinet@reddit
The ship is big, and Concorde isn't at cruising altitude.
QE2: 963ft
Concorde: 202ft
If Concorde was at 2000ft ASL, the camera plane would only need to be at about 2400ft, to make them look similar size as they are in the photo, if my maths is correct. (I'm assuming QE2 is at roughly sea level.)
PAHoarderHelp@reddit
I think it’s probably at sea level?
Or pretty close.
Also, it’s not OP’s sea, or level.
memeboiandy@reddit
I would love to know if the fly by and picture with QE2 was intentional or not. I feel like it would have had to be, but trying to arrange to get the escort, concord, AND qe2 in one picture with the weather calm and clear enough must have been a struggle
shiftyjku@reddit
I believe at one time Cunard and BA had a joint promo.
memeboiandy@reddit
ok thats really cool
Long-Replacement6091@reddit (OP)
I think it was
Pristine_Math_8782@reddit
Of course the Ship is not yours, it costs billions of dollars

4hats a sad story
webbhare1@reddit
Owning more than 1 hat is not considered as sad actually
KarmaliteNone@reddit
Back in the days of the old/orig QE2 you got a discount flight on the Concorde (special promotion) if you sailed NYC to UK. My Concorde ticket fare said it was over $3K but all I paid was $275 in addition to the QE2 price. I think BA and Cunard were owned by the same company or something. Best flight ever!
Formal-Ad678@reddit
Can't get more bri'ish the that....Concorde, the Queen Elisabeth 2 and the Red arrows

No one thinking of Mr Gibson taking the photo through the canopy of another hawk, on wet film so had to consider the camera settings manually etc.... can't say one shot as they apparently did several circuits but couldn't even check until developing the film.
pissy_corn_flakes@reddit
That’s my ship

"Concorde" "the RAF" "A ship"
Concorde and the Red Arrows acrobatic display team perform a flyby of the QE2, in celebration of the iconic pinnacle of British luxury travel - a six night cruise to New York, three nights in the Astoria hotel, and then a flight back to Heathrow on Concorde.
Literally as luxury as a week's holiday gets.
My dad always regrets not getting us tickets for this journey before Concorde was retired.
When the QE2 retirement was announced he promptly booked us on a cruise.
You haven't lived until you've had steak and carbonara delivered to your room at 4am for free.
