Given the option would you rather have 1 car that does it all, or split the cost between 1 daily car and 1 sports car?
Posted by Key_Construction5336@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 306 comments
For example would you rather have 1 car that does it all, some examples being:
- BMW X3 M40i / X5 40i / M340i sedan or wagon
- Audi SQ5 / SQ7
- Porsche Macan
- Mercedes GLC 43 / GLE 43
Or split the cost and have 2 cars, one that's your "boring" daily and one that's a dedicated sports car, examples being:
- Daily: Any regular SUV from Toyota, Mazda, Acura, Subaru, etc.
- Sports car: Miata, GR86, BRZ, etc.
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
Depends entirely on how much money you have.
Technical-Pen-4226@reddit
Yeah besides the cost of two cars, you also have to pay double insurance/maintenance and many people don't have a second parking spot.
Cool-Childhood-6737@reddit
Minimum liability coverage on an older car and it may actually bring down your rate taking the miles off the fun car.
Evil_Dry_frog@reddit
But I’m also keeping miles off my 911, and the days when I’m driving it, are much better days/drives.
HatesDuckTape@reddit
Call your insurance company. Report your mileage and pay significantly less. My brother drives a company car to and from work, and basically only drives his own car on weekends. His insurance is dirt cheap because of it. Like a quarter of the price it would’ve been if he didn’t. I think he takes odometer pics every 6 months or so.
GHavenSound@reddit
Insurance isn't doubled when you have two cars more like 50 percent again with a multi car discount. The maintenance is split between two cars but so is the mileage so that's a wash. And if you can't afford a house with parking then this question isn't for you anyway.
johncuyle@reddit
Indeed. None of the cars on OP's list actually "do it all". Most of them aren't even cars. The only car I can think of that might legitimately qualify is the Porsche 911 Dakar. If you have the money, great. For us poors, multiple vehicles are really the only option.
a2jeeper@reddit
And how big your garage is.
Currently I can park 13 cars between finished barn and garage.
Moving and going to one car garage if I even get a garage, and a small one most likely. Really messed with your plans and toys.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Good thing I don't care about leaving my cars outside unless they need work. Although I do want a proper workshop so I can do a full teardown and restomod on something. The space is far more useful for that than storage IMO.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Depends on the cars more than anything and how much they cost to buy/fix. I've always owned at least 2 cars at all times and I spend way less than most people do on 1 car note.
Cold_Captain696@reddit
I think for this to be an interesting question, you should assume the budget is whatever you personally would normally budget on a single car.

According_Flow_6218@reddit
I generally agree, but I don’t really see why 1-3 aren’t the same thing. Seems like they have the same requirement of hauling stuff / people.
kirradoodle@reddit
I accomplished 1 through 3 with a Volvo wagon (grocery and dog hauler, general errand runner) with a trailer hitch for a 5x8 utility trailer, to haul whatever won't fit in the Volvo.
That leaves plenty of room for toys: Miata, Audi TTS, and Audi S5.
Daft_Bot379@reddit
I could see the need for a separate #2 if you live in an urban area where parking/manuverability of a small car, or rural where improved gas mileage of a hybrid because of distance can come into play.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
I feel like if you live in an area where parking is an issue then it probably doesn’t make sense to have 3 vehicles that can do the same thing. Likewise, if you’re sensitive to gas mileage then it probably doesn’t make sense to spend money buying 3 vehicles when you could just buy one.
GeT_NiCE_@reddit
Plenty of people live in suburbs or semi-rural areas where parking is not an issue and drive 5 days a week to places where parking is an issue.
Imagine this: you live on a 3 acre plot outside of town where you have a big garden and no city services (like trash pickup). You drive (alone) to your job in the city 5 days a week where you park in a parking deck. Maybe you drive 600 miles a week for work. The truck you use for your garden chores and to haul your trash might only get 15 mpg. You could get a Prius that gets 55 mpg. That’d save you almost 30 gallons of gas PER WEEK!
According_Flow_6218@reddit
I don’t know where in the U.S. you can have 3 acres but also live close enough to commute a really dense city that has tiny parking garages that won’t fit a truck and those 3 acres aren’t so expensive that if you can afford them you even pay attention to gas consumption or prices.
I mean I could see a person in Texas living on 3 acres and commuting to the city, but parking garages are built to fit trucks. I could see someone commuting to NYC, but if they live on 3 acres that close to NYC they probably have someone who works for them who owns a truck.
Hawk13424@reddit
I live in Texas on five acres and about a 30 min drive from a city of 1M people. Driving my F-250 into town sucked so recently switched to a Tacoma.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Really? Seems like at least 1/20 vehicles in DFW is F250-sized or larger.
Hawk13424@reddit
Maybe they just live with shitty parking options. Or maybe Austin just isn’t as accommodating.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Oh… yeah… Austin is uhhh “different”
mikkowus@reddit
Hybrids aren't that great at high speeds for long distances
Hawk13424@reddit
Depends on how much truck you need. Full bed and the ability to tow something heavy then it probably isn’t a family hauler.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Most people don’t need that. If you do then yeah it makes sense, but be honest with yourself about how often you’re actually doing it.
Hawk13424@reddit
Had an F-250 when I owned two horses. Pulling that trailer just wasn’t an option with a Tacoma. Recently got rid of the horses and shifted back to a Tacoma. We’ll see if I regret it the next time I need to rent a stump grinder.
AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
Too much of a compromise. I have no interest in daily driving my 8.1 powered dually, and my beater daily cobalt sucks at pulling an enclosed gooseneck car trailer.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Out of curiosity, not to be argumentative, but why would you be opposed in daily driving your truck?
AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
Single gas digit mileage for one, wear parts are far more expensive per mile than a car, it’s huge, rides rough empty. It’s really pretty much a useless vehicle unless you need to move something heavy, then it’s great at that. I used to daily a half ton regular cab short box and that’s about the largest truck I’d want to deal with on a daily basis. The dually is just way too big. It does a hell of a lot better job towing a car on a trailer than the half ton did though.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Yeah I hadn’t considered how it would ride empty, that would be unpleasant. Where I live duallies are common enough that just about everything is sized to accommodate them, but admittedly I’ve never owned one. Also gas is cheap enough that it’s not a factor for me.
AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
Gas is cheap enough that it doesn’t really hurt me either, but if i can commute cheaper in something else I’m going to do it. Insurance and registration costs are dirt cheap where I live, so it’s pretty easy for a cheap beater like my cobalt to pay for itself. I technically don’t need that car, but I treat it like my disposable one and rack up the cheap miles. There’s no reason the dually won’t last me decades from now, and you can’t find trucks with manual transmissions anymore if I wore it out and wanted to replace it. I expect to keep it for a very long time, and for it to live with a trailer attached to it 90% of the time.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Sounds like you have a fairly uncommon situation. It makes sense to have a number of vehicles if they do indeed have specific uses like that. I think though for the more typical suburban family a beater truck, a family hauler, and a commuter vehicle doesn’t make much sense.
AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
I think a typical suburban homeowner doesn’t need a truck at all, and a 6x10 utility trailer behind whatever boring family hauler will cover anything that they’ll do with a pickup on a regular basis. They aren’t dragging race cars, broken cars and tractors around on a regular basis.
I’m a firm believer in a spare car of some sort though. It’s pretty absurd to be like me and be able to drive a different car every single day of the week, but having a backup beater to use comes in handy a lot, especially if you’re not driving brand new cars.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Oh believe me if my wife would allow vehicles parked outside of the garage I would have enough vehicles to drive a different one each day of the week. My long term strategy is to get that 3 acres outside of city limits and build a barn… :)
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Depends on what you need. I do agree on the truck being most useful as a beater, at least if you actually use it as a truck.
As far as a commuter/fun car, I refuse to separate the 2, at least fully. Having a weekend/project/track/show car is one thing, but I refuse to accept that being a daily means that being boring is at all excused if you're someone who cares about that sort of thing. I love small, lightweight cars, so I tend to enjoy compacts and subcompacts. My Honda Fit allows me to have the fun I care for the most (corner carving) without sacrificing practicality. Might be more costly or difficult if you're into higher power, but there are compromises there as well.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
I agree with the commuter / errand-runner being fun. Mine is an X5 with M package and RWD rather than AWD. It’s definitely not trackable, but it does a good job of transitioning between self-driving during stop-and-go traffic and carving up on-ramps. Also bonus points for making other drivers think I’m mentally unstable when I use hand gestures to control the stereo 🤣😂🤣😂
SkylineFTW97@reddit
I actually did test out how much I could safely push my old Honda Passport on wide sweeping corners (on empty roads of course) and found that it does better than I expected it to. And as a plus from this, I'm now 100% confident that I can make an emergency maneuver abruptly without flipping it (think the moose test). I'd argue it's even more important to know the limits of an SUV given the higher rollover risk, and that varies heavily from individual car to individual car, even between 2 of the same make, model, trim, and year depending on condition, normal load, tires, etc.
Granted none of my cars have anything more advanced than traction or stability control, so no automated cruise control (I don't even use regular cruise control) or gesture controlled stereos. One of my uncles has an X6 with that stuff and he loves it, but I'm a mechanic and I'm not paying someone else to fix my car. There's a reason us mechanics looargely refuse to own anything fancy, we don't want to fix it or pay someone else to. I mostly drive sub-$1000 beaters and my 1 "nice" and not bottom dollar car is a 10 year old base model subcompact with a manual transmission. I don't believe in seeking to do the bare minimum when it comes to maintenance (most people in this sub would consider my service intervals overkill), but I like to keep things as simple as feasible.
SilverStryfe@reddit
Personally, I have 5 vehicles.
1 - 2500HD with a big block. Moves the trailer and halls the atvs. Used 3-4,000 miles per year. Gets 11mpg on a good day.
2- small suv. Winter commuter and general running around majority of the miles in my household.
3- large suv. Wife’s vehicle to cover all her needs. 6,000 miles a year
4- project truck. My toy excuses the garage a couple times a year
5- sport bike. Spring to fall commuter.
Could I have a couple less vehicles? Sure but I own everything outright and have the size to keep it all.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
I won’t begrudge you 4 and 5.
2 and 3 sound like there’s no duplication here since they’re for different people.
So now I guess the question is why have both 1 and 2 or both 1 and 3. Would 3 not also haul that stuff? Or why not use 1 in place of 2 or 3?
GeT_NiCE_@reddit
It definitely could be one vehicle. Just depends on your specific needs. Plenty of people drive crew cab trucks in the suburbs that do 1-3 just fine for them. Other people need to tow big trailers, or haul loads of mulch, or plow snow, or whatever else that may not be “best” to do with your daily driver or family hauler. Or what if you need a truck for some chores, but commute 80 miles to work? You’d be better served with a mpg-focused commuter. Lots of possibilities!
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Yeah for sure if you’re hauling big trailers or mulch then it makes sense, but I think those are really special use cases that don’t apply to most people.
As for commuting, like I said to another commenter it seems like if you’re sensitive to the cost of gas then you’d be even more sensitive to the cost of a whole second car.
Funny_Repeat_8207@reddit
Maybe you go to work, get your groceries, haul your family, go hunting, fishing, offroading, and pull your camper in your crew cab, long bed, 4 wheel drive dually .

I had to check your username to see if it was my husband because this is similar to his mentality lol. We have a truck for when we need to haul a lot of items/tow, he has a beater car for commuting to work during the winter months, then there's the SUV I drive since I drive the kids to school and it's usually the vehicle we drive for vacations, and then we also have our own sports cars. It's a lot of vehicles but it's also nice to have choices lol.

AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
Having a cheap old big truck and a cheap old fuel sipper is way better than trying to have one vehicle that does both. Also, the more vehicles you own the less reliability matters. You always have something to drive. I own multiple pickup trucks even, since they all serve different purposes. I don’t need to use my 8mpg big block 1 ton flatbed to haul bags of garbage, the little 94 Toyota does that fine, but I’m not towing anything with that. The crappy old 500 dollar half ton Chevy gets the medium sized jobs or stuff that I don’t want to beat the shit out of the bed in the Toyota with, like hauling engines, firewood or scrap metal. Long trips get taken in the 200k mile cobalt, since it does a better job of hauling passengers and luggage than the Toyota truck. My entire fleet combined isn’t worth what one 5 year old civic costs.
Rowt1ger@reddit

My daily and winter mode is a Chevy Blazer. My fun car is a Corvette. I put 25k miles on the Blazer each year and 10-15k on the Corvette.
Danarri_Dolla@reddit
I would split personally -
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
As someone with 3 vehicles, definitely split. I have the nice luxury sedan daily (Mercedes E550), 500hp Mustang, and a shitty old truck for the handful of times a year that I need to use the bed for something. Big benefit of this is when one is down for repairs I always have another vehicle to drive. Downside is the cost to insure 3 vehicles is Florida is getting out of hand.
Mobile-Tax-3161@reddit
Should be closer to insuring 2 vehicles than it is to 3 normal ones if that truck truly is a shitty old truck.
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
It is in fact a shitty old truck. That’s my only vehicle with just liability and it’s still almost $100/mo
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
What aggravates me is that I have to pay liability insurance on all 3 vehicles. Like I can only drive one at a time, why am I paying liability insurance 3 times? Liability should be tied to your driver’s lic name instead of the car in my opinion
Mobile-Tax-3161@reddit
100 bucks a month for liability only is legit theft, sorry to hear that man. I have a rust Jeep in Wyoming with liability only that is 48 a month. I agree, liability only should be tied to a name, you can only crash one vehicle at a time.
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
I just checked, the truck is $95/mo. Granted I do carry higher limits, 500/250 BI and $100k property damage, and 100/300 UI, but it’s still crazy high, dropping to the state minimums doesn’t change it by a lot. I also have a $1m umbrella on top of my auto insurance, it’s far too easy to run into a half million dollar car where I live, last thing I need is going bankrupt from a car accident.
IEatCouch@reddit
Have you looked into Hagerty for insurance? They are who i use.
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
Yes, they will only insure the mustang. I have the mustang insured through American Collectors which was a bit cheaper than Hagerty
HatesDuckTape@reddit
Call Jake from State Farm and report your mileage. My brother drives a company car to and from work, and basically only drives his own car on the weekends. His premium went way down, like almost 1/4 what it originally was. Pretty sure he takes odometer pics every 6 months or so.
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
I do that, have low mileage discounts on both cars. Florida insurance rates are just crazy. Those two plus my fiancée’s car is over $400/mo. We both have clean driving records too. I shop it every 6 months or so and State Farm has been the cheapest for like 5 years
HatesDuckTape@reddit
If you have comprehensive, it’s probably due to that. Flooding, hurricane, etc. risk is significantly higher in Florida than NY state. I’m no insurance expert, just thinking out loud. My comprehensive is pretty cheap. Our biggest issue is other drivers.
Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
Hurricane risk is big, but other drivers are a big issue here too. Lot of old people on the road here

Ok-Friendship-3509@reddit
I don’t think I could ever go down to one. If I had to go down to two, I would probably get rid of the Mercedes and the truck and get a newer, high trim truck. Something like an F150 or F250 platinum something along those lines. The higher trim trucks are as nice as luxury cars these days

Also have a 2001 bmw 330ci , fun sporty fair weather use car. Would suck if it wasn't for the fact it's a manual.
Then I have a 2002 325i sedan with a blown motor , have it for sale cheap but no interests , so perhaps drift or track car.
That said , I have zero payments and being a mechanic by trade I only have parts costs to worry about.
billp97@reddit
ive got a subaru wrx as my "do all" because it carries all the people and cargo i need 99.99% of the time, and a motorcycle as well. they basically split duty on what my daily is depending on weather. obviously if you have kids or something an SUV is more practical, but if all you need is a fun commuter get a fun commuter. No need for both if you life situations dont require the size/capacity of an SUV or truck. There are a few good fun sports cars that are AWD as well so even in bad weather they are perfectly usable, especially with a second set of tires if you live in that sort of climate.

HotRodHomebody@reddit
aside from whether you need a truck, economy, car or what have you, my personal experience was when I had a sporty car, late 70s 911, I used it as my commuter. At some point, I bought a separate commuter car (maybe it was a midsize truck), and I found that I appreciated my sporty car much more when I drove it on weekends and special occasions and not every day.

I went with the all-in-one option with an RS6 Avant. Had it for 3 years. But now I'm probably leaning towards splitting it. Probably sell it, get an SUV, and then a fun car. Maybe even a track car, which the SUV could tow to track days.
CafeTeo@reddit
Split.
And as for money I would take the money I had for 1 car and divide it and find 2 cars that fit the bill.
So for me instead of a $30k Tesla M3
I would get an older M3 for $10k-$15k
and an older Tundra for $10k-$15k
Or if not a Tundra then a sports car like a Mazda Miata or some really high mileage Vet.
I would not go over $30k total.
pyromatt0@reddit
You'll be way better off with two. I was using my Charger double duty for the first year I had it and keeping up with maintenance from track use made it a very stressful daily. Long Sunday nights doing repairs to make it in on Monday. If you have a track dedicated car and you break it, it can sit until it's convenient to fix.

brandon_c207@reddit
For my personal uses, I would (and have gone) the "daily" + project/sports car route. However, for my daily, I chose a car I still enjoy driving (as I will be driving it 70-95% of the time) that still meets 99% of my utility needs.
For me, that car was a 2020 Hyundai Veloster. It gets good MPG, has enough room for me and 3 others fairly comfortably, has a hatch for easier transport when it comes to groceries and such, but is also fun to drive. Due to current storage limitations, this is kind of my daily and sports car at the moment as my sports car (1990 miata) is stored elsewhere and is not easily accessible at a moment's notice That being said, even if it was, my current stance on a fun daily + sports car wouldn't change. By a "fun" daily, I pretty much mean something that you may do an intake, exhaust, wheels, coils/springs (depending on where you live and road conditions), and maybe a mild tune (mostly if your modifications require it for your car). All these mods (minus the tune) are easily reversible without voiding any warranties on the vehicle and mostly just increase driving experience without huge changes to the car.

I ski. For 15 years, I had VW GTIs as my daily driver and a body on frame SUV as my ski car.

Depends on what you like. A lot of sedans are very sporty in their own right (some BMWs come to mind). How much do you appreciate a ‘sports car’? Personally, I have a convertible along with an SUV (and a motorcycle). If I had, say, an M4 I might miss the convertible, and might miss the SUV but it can be an all year vehicle.
Others have mentioned cost and space. The only thing I’ll add is that if you have to take a loan out, you can’t afford two cars.

If you're going to drive the car hard, be doing mods all the time, I'd go the 2 car route. initial cost can be higher but over the long run maintenance, repairs, and other incidentals could be cheaper and maintaining value of both cars could be better. I'm not into the car scene too much but have 5 motorcycles for the exact reasons above.

None of these are practical in terms of the modern market. If anything, a truck is currently the best option for utility and fun.

If I was rich and had a house with a large garage maybe two cars could be fun, but it's not something I aim for. I'd rather have a nice everyday car since that's what I'm driving everyday. And no SUV if I can avoid it.
If it was a hobby of mine it would be a different thing though, like if I raced on weekends or spent my spare time renovating some old car. I have a few friends that have a vintage car that they usually spend more on than their regular car, and that they drive like a handful of times per year or so. I like old cars but to me that's an insane amount to spend on a hobby.

I have different cars for different purposes, no I'm not rich they are all affordable 2nd hand cars, if I need to carry stuff I use the ute, if I need to take passengers I use the sedan If I wanna have fun or there is only me. I use the little 2 seater sportscar, If I need to go offroad I use the 4WD
All of these cost me less to buy and own any of those listed in your list of all purpose cars!

Split. For a few years I had my 2012 accord v6 and a 2003 bmw z4. The Honda was quieter, more comfortable, and had cruise control. The bmw drove and handled like a tiny sports car, no way the Honda or most any 1-car solution would work for me anymore. I fully understand the sports car appeal, even a slow/cheap sports car
Glittering-Show-5521@reddit
I'd rather have 1 that does it all (though that is relative if you live in a place where you need a truck). I have a Subaru Forester XT, and I can attest that it's not just a "boring" car. It's the same engine and powertrain as the WRX CVT (just detuned by 10 hp). You can drive it like a boring car, but it has some serious balls, especially compared to any regular NA Subaru. The part that sucks for me is that the telescoping steering wheel only goes out far enough for someone who's 5'9", but I'm 6'1". Other than that, it's a great "do it all" car.

I’ve done the weekend car thing and it doesn’t work for me. There are nice work days I’d like to drive it, but more often than not I felt like I was paying maintenance and insurance for too few miles. I’d rather have a fun but compromised daily.

Separate, because I have incompatible needs. I have a 4 person family with 2 that have to be in rear seats. This requires a >2 seat car. I want something small that’s reasonably fun, those don’t come with 4 seats, and those that do can’t fit child seats in the rear. I also prefer my fun car be a convertible and there are no >2 seat convertibles that I care to own.

As someone who lives in a snowy area that's also on the rural side of things, I personally would go with a small pickup like a Tacoma (even though the new ones are basically the same size as a 90's 1500) and a sports car. We got the do-it-all in an X3M Competition. Sure, it handles the people and stuff hauling without too much compromise. But it doesn't hold a candle to the 911 parked next to it in the garage.

YourFriendPutin@reddit
If I had the option which means I assume I have say like enough for average stuff not super rich id go for both as the sports car will inevitably be a project car and track toy, I’ll modify it im sure it’ll end up broken from time to time and I’ll end up waiting on parts from time to time. Even if you built and I got exactly what I wanted it’s only a matter of time before I wanna go deeper. Literally my life now with cars, I just don’t have much money to spend in the real world so projects take even longer, and occasionally the daily is stuck being a project but not because I wanted it to be haha but it gives me the ability to drive the project as is while I fix the daily which honestly is part of the decision as well, having that second car can be extremely helpful. Hopefully in this scenario the daily is as reliable as a new car.

2 cars or even 3, because you can absolutely get a better experience in each case.
Current fleet is
Fast and chill cruiser: Model 3 Performance (yeah I know..)
Fun car: Lightly modified Honda S660
Workhorse: 25 year old Toyota Dyna box truck.
Doubt any one car could do each thing as well as those.
speeding2nowhere@reddit
2 different cars are always better than just 1 car. And the daily definitely does not have to be boring. In truth, any car that can “do everything” will do each thing with more mediocrity than 2 different cars that each are more focused in their purpose. (Like an M340i is never going to be a lightweight sports car no matter what you do to it)
Ideally tho IMO, you should pair 2 complementary cars that do different things rather than 2 cars that are pretty similar.
Take your 1 car list and pair any of those with a Miata or an S2000, or something like that and you’ll have a great time. If you can’t quite swing that, then there are other fun daily drivers like WRXs etc that will also yield a fun and complementary combination.
I currently have a complementary trio. - Dodge Charger 392 - 1995 Miata M Edition - Honda Ridgeline
3 completely different cars for different jobs.
There is a diminishing return past a certain point where additional cars add more hassle than enjoyment, but it depends on your life situation, finances, and free time. For me, 3 is about the right number right now.

Having separate vehicles means less compromise in utility. My work truck can do anything that a truck needs to do, but it gets (at best) 8 mpg combined. That doesn't really matter though, because when I don't need to do truck stuff I have a comfy ass grand marquis to drive around. At one point I was in a position where I needed to have a pickup as my only vehicle, and I had to compromise and get a half ton, which sucked.

You need a good car and a beater.
It doesn't matter what you do you need a beater. I tend to keep a full-sized pickup over 20 years old as a beater. It does all dump runs, lumber yards, junkyard hunting and pulling a trailer for dragging home projects. Rain days or just bad weather in general it gets taken.
Now your beater can be anything not just a truck. Hell could be an econo box a crown Vic anything to take the hard miles off your baby.

If I had the money I’d work it like such:
1st car: good daily driver, comfy ride, lots of QOL, minimal blind spots, not too cumbersome to drive.
2nd car: the work/bad weather car. Something I don’t mind getting dirty but can handle the anything the weather throws at it.
3rd: the nice sports car. Maybe treat this one as more of an asset than a car due to me likely only driving it a few weeks out of the year.

My last “combo” was the GLC43 and a C7 corvette. I rarely drove the Vette to be honest as I usually had other things to do besides just enjoying the drive experience. It’s a scheduling thing basically - you gotta have time to properly enjoy the rigours of a sports car - like getting in and out, parking, watching for potholes, etc. but yeah, when you have the time - nothing beats the experience.
For me, if I were to do it over I would just go GLC63 and call it a day.

I did the multi car thing for years. Had a beater pickup truck, a nice daily for comfort and decent mileage, and a street legal track car for hoonigans. Definitely split cost. After paying the sports car bucks, I am going to want it to last. Give me a cheapish beater for the daily grind, a decent (runs great, great gas mileage and roomy, doesn't have to ve new nor even look great) luxury vehicle for long family trips, then the bad ass sports car.

Having racecar and then a dedicated daily is the path a lot of my friends (and myself) have taken.
Our fun cars are not new mor fancy. They go fast and/or go sideways very well. And do not take up much or any daily driving duties. Daily drivers are for getting around take taking family places (mines a minivan!).
It helps our fun cars are relatively cheap, paid off, and we mostly work on them ourselves.
If i were in your position and I had needs like taking family places, lots of commuting, etc… I’d do the (very used) gr86/brz route and a decent daily that will get me around just fine with out drama. Like a tacoma, or a sienna.

There's no car that does it all. I strongly prefer two, however I'm selling my s2000 because I work from home full time, and it's just impossible to keep two cars running at the same time. The worst thing you can do is let a car sit for weeks at a time, all the time.
I also wouldn't say that your "1 car that does it all". None of those are sports cars, or convertibles, although the X3 and Macan S are up there. Source: X3 M40i owner.

All of my vehicles are very low miles and in amazing shape instead of beating the snot out of the same car day in and day out.
edgarecayce@reddit
I have a late model F-150 SuperCrew for taking people and stuff places, and a Boxster S for driving me and maybe one person around. It’s not the cheapest way to go but I get the best of both worlds with it.
Originally I got a Jaguar F-Type R and no way to take the family anywhere without using my wife’s car so I bought an old Tahoe for trips, CostCo etc. The Jag got replaced by the Boxster, and the Tahoe died with 200k+ miles so I got a more recent truck.

The dream? One daily, one fun. I don't want a "dream stable" that has it all, not even "my top 5". I realize having the cars isn't important, being able to experience it is one thing, the "quest to have one".... drawing from my experience of collecting things, has actually been the thrill of finding it in the wild. Once I have it, that thrill is gone. It's why some collectors don't ever stop collecting.
I don't have the money to meet that dream, but I still aspire to reach that point one day.
Electronic_Muffin218@reddit
Those examples are all horrific at “do it all” - too small for kid sport transport, too cumbersome and high up to give sports feels. The only way is practical plus fun in two separate vehicles.
Which_Initiative_882@reddit
Split for sure. Not only can you have a dedicated fun car that can be modded to your pleasure without becoming a burden to daily, you have a backup vehicle incase your main car breaks down.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Not just breakdowns, but accidents. If your only car gets stolen or totaled, you're kinda SOL and are under much more pressure to replace it quickly. If my daily gets totaled, it might suck paying more in gas driving my SUV, but I'm in no rush. Hell, I can buy something cheap and fix it up to save money with that assurance. That's usually what I do, most of my cars are sub-$1000 auction cars. I have 2 so that if 1 needs repairs, I just drive the other. And once it's fixed right, no more breakdowns and I still have a backup.
snatch1e@reddit
Opting for a single versatile car simplifies ownership and reduces expenses. But the choice depends on your budget, and lifestyle.
AlwaysBagHolding@reddit
I’d counter that with its far cheaper to split duties because older less versatile cars have a far lower cost of entry. You can get a beat old 2wd regular cab truck and an older economy car for far cheaper than a quad cab pickup that is tolerable to drive and maintain as a daily, if truck things is one of the things you regularly need.

Assuming you can park two cars and can handle a little extra maintenence / insurance, two tools will always be better.
Especially if the one tool is a just a 2 tonne truck with a lot of horsepower.
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Depends on what you want/need your vehicle to do. If you want a car that's fun and a car that's practical, it depends on what you consider fun and practical because the 2 aren't inherently mutually exclusive.
Personally, I can't do everything in 1 car. On one hand, I want something small and light that I can thrash in the corners (it also helps commuting because I live right by an frequently travel into a major city), but I also tow cars and haul scrap metal. When I say lightweight, I mean sub-2800 lbs light. My daily, a 2015 Honda Fit LX, is 2500 lbs. Nothing that light can tow a car long distance, even a small one. And my truck, a 1996 Honda Passport, can pull a 3000 lb sedan even with 2 scrap engines in the hatch, but it gets 16 MPG compared to the 35 the Fit gets and it's too much of a rollover risk to autocross (although given how much smaller 90s SUVs are, It's actually pretty easy to maneuver in tight city streets. I've done it plenty of times and it's only been a hassle if I was pulling a car on a tow dolly).
Therefore I own 2. I'm fortunate that my preference for small compacts and subcompacts allows me to have my fun there without a sports car, but I also find trucks fun in a different way. So as a rule, if I can only own 2 cars, 1 is a compact or subcompact and the other is a truck. Plus having 2 cars means I have a backup in case something happens to one of them. Costs a bit more in maintenance, but I do my own repair work, so it's not too bad in my case.
Brave_Negotiation_63@reddit
One car that does it all. Ideally the BMW M3 touring, but I’ll do with my Stinger 3.3 because I don’t want to spend that much. I don’t commute by car, and in the weekend I go into the mountains with family. No time to drive by myself a lot so there’s no point in having a dedicated fun car. Different points in our lives require different needs. Now that we've got two kids driving and one off at school, we have five cars two for the kids that drive and three for us that are all Jack of all trades cars.
Before they were driving we had dedicated sports cars and dedicated luxury cars (gls450 & corvette convertible, for example), but with as many cars split between two houses it's just not practical to have a sports car right now. So we have high performance SUVs for ourselves.
When our kids are out on their own we will have dedicated performance cars and dedicated luxury cars again

Split. I have truck as my daily for its utility (towing the boat and whatnot) and a GT350 for fun. A few years back (COVID times...) we traded in my wife's car for a huge gain and then had to wait forever to source a new one with all the supply chain issues. I had a Hellcat at the time and she drove my truck while I took the HC as a daily for about 6 weeks. That was the quickest way to make a fun car less fun... I dunno about a dichotomy between daily and sports. I want one boring car that's good for highway trips with the family, and another one that's quirky/unusual/bonkers.
My commute is pretty short and the weather is good here pretty much all the time, so my plan is to drive the bonkers car as a commuter once I finish it, and use the boring car for bad weather and long trips.
The thing I don't like about literally every car on your "does it all" list is that they are so ... not normal, that's the wrong word. They don't have any bonkers to them. They are dentist cars - any well-off person can and does drive one, but they aren't particularly interesting.

Already doing the second. 3 row PHEV SUV as the family hauler, which my wife takes to work since her work has free level 2 charging. and a 2 row "sports" compact SUV for my daily driver. We live where there are mountains and weather. so a "real" sportscar is very seasonal and route limited. What we have was chosen for function over form.
brianleedy@reddit
Soooo many variables.
I think about consolidating cars regularly... but if don't end up doing it. Miata/4Runner/Forester combo works.
Jarreddit15@reddit
My current car and the one I want next are both on the jack of all trades list
Millkstake@reddit
If I had the funds I'd do both - daily driver and a sports car
nobikflop@reddit
I have my own business, so it’s an easy choice. I work out of my Honda Ridgeline and have an NB Miata for times I don’t want to drive a small pickup. It’s basically as close as I’ll ever come to having a motorcycle.
If I had to sell the Miata due to parking limitations I could. The Ridgeline is a capable truck and comfortable SUV all in one. Is perfectly adequate for road trips, hauling duties, commutes, and date night.
christlinah@reddit
Nah I'd always go for one does-it-all car. Way less headache.
Golf-Guns@reddit
If you're paying, I'll take 1 car.
If I'm doing it, I want a commuter car that takes regular fuel, cheap to maintain and less likely to end up pulled over.
I've got a little Honda Civic, a small truck, and a family car. If I had more room to work on shit I'd have all kinds of cool stuff
Antmax@reddit
Sporty car as in hatchback or 2/3 series BMW, Mazda 3, Mini Cooper and an actual 2 seater sports car. Miata, Lotus vintage Elan or 2000's Elise.
Anything SUV size just isn't fun or interesting for me personally, especially if it isn't tossable.
ethos1234567890@reddit
If I don’t have to count my wife’s car then just 1 sports car with the full budget, please… if my wife’s car counts then I guess 2 cars
BigRobCommunistDog@reddit
Absolutely the split. You’re never gonna really track day your daily.
Humble_Sector6393@reddit
I had this same decision a few months ago. Bought a Ram TRX and get the best of both worlds (minus track and windy road driving), plus tow and haul when needed!
Off-Da-Ricta@reddit
Jeep for winter, bmw for summer. Honda for thrashing.
Been my recipe for 10 years now.
durrtyurr@reddit
If you can afford it you should never have less than two. Not having a backup car is super irresponsible.
Regular-Amoeba5455@reddit
I almost bought an S class 10 years ago. Instead I bought a RAM 1500 and Alfa Romeo Giulia. I didn’t regret it.
slammed430@reddit
I don’t see a car guy picking the singular car option. Now you can mod 2 vehicles that’s a win win for me everytime
timothythefirst@reddit
I bought a charger as kind of the first option. I’d rather split it up but at the time I was in the market for a car I needed something soon and didn’t feel like scouring Craigslist and marketplace for the perfect cheap cars and I was in the process of moving at the same time and didn’t know how much storage space I would end up with. I like my charger but I think it’d probably be more fun to have a 4x4 beater for the winter and then a manual rwd sports car for the summer.
But even with a relatively low budget you can do pretty decent splitting it up. You can split 25k in half and get a reliable boring car and something pretty fun.
PckMan@reddit
"Given the option" implies money/space/time is not an issue so obviously the choice is to have 2 cars. The only reason to get a "do-it-all" is if you don't have those things.
bloodstainedphilos@reddit
Why does the daily have to be an SUV?
Petrifalcon3@reddit
I'd rather have a "does it all" like a WRX as my daily, and then have a more pure sports car as a second car. What that would be depends on how much I could afford to spend on a second car. But for now, I'm more than happy just having the WRX
Relative-Jicama9525@reddit
Coming from Northeast Ohio. GMC Canyon and 2007 Vette. Drive Vette a lot in the summer about anywhere from 5-7k miles since bought 5 years ago. For sure enjoy it
Steffiluren@reddit
Ideally both. I would never have a generic japanese crossover, even if that meant I could have a really cool weekend car. I need something slightly interesting in my day to day driving too. Doesn’t need to be expensive, just interesting or at least something that handles well. I Currently own an Alfa Giulietta as a daily and I’m looking for an E46 project car. I’d be super happy with that 2 car garage.
cap_swaggin2@reddit
Split. I have an A3 and a M3. Both sedans but completely very different experiences.
sp4nky86@reddit
I own a WRX. It does everything these can.
Attapussy@reddit
I'd like to have a car.
Being car-less since last Christmas has put a major crimp into my accessibility of the world around me, especially to the biggest off-leash dog park in this part of my world.
breadexpert69@reddit
You are asking r/askcarguys
Everyone here will tell you to have a car for each day of the week.
Emotional-Rise5322@reddit
I don’t think there’s a single solution. I have three. Raptor, 911 S, and a GLE 450. Covers all the bases.
NitWhittler@reddit
I've already made that decision. I have a practical car (BMW X3 xDrive 3.0) and a fun sports car (BMW Z4 3.0si roadster).
One can haul stuff around and one can go vroom vroom and give me thrills. Both are fun to drive, so win-win.
Minimum-Station-1202@reddit
I have an Audi Q7 and while it's not the fastest/sportiest thing out there, it's fun enough for hitting the canyons every now and then at a speed that won't get me impounded. Also great for hauling my ass + gear to the ski hill, camping trips, etc.
It'd be cool to have a track car to friggin send it in but idrc about having a plated sportscar these days.
Some_Direction_7971@reddit
I’d daily the hell out of a Ariel atom V8 500 😂
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
Not a sports car, but I have my daily and I have my 4x4 that I beat the absolute shit out of. It would be an unreliable daily, at best.
sllewgh@reddit
If they actually made a car that can "do it all", that would be the obviously superior choice... but they don't, and they can't. There cannot be a small lightweight convertible that's fun to throw through turns, easy on gas, and easy to park in the city... that can also help your friends move in to their new house.
cholula_is_good@reddit
The do it all sporty cars are always a little too heavy for real back road driving if you have experienced/owned a real sports car. My giulia is amazing, best sports sedan I have ever driven, but even then it hasn’t been the true replacement for my 911 I had hoped for.
Ill-Satisfaction8277@reddit
maybe you shouldn't be doing real "backroad" driving on public streets.
PolybiusChampion@reddit
Do you drive the speed limit in the left lane?
Ill-Satisfaction8277@reddit
my wife was the last one to get a speeding ticket, probably blames it on me for putting those stupid ///M badges on her car ... yeesh
OwnTurnip1621@reddit
Did you get a QV or a 2.0L?
cholula_is_good@reddit
QV
OwnTurnip1621@reddit
Thanks, I was curious about the comparison to the 911. I have a QV as well but have never driven a 911 to have any opinions.
ElegantGate7298@reddit
If you enjoy working on cars yourself it is a huge benefit to have a second vehicle if upgrades/repairs/maintenance take longer than expected and you still need to get to work.
SizeAlarmed8157@reddit
2011 Mustang GT in Eastern Kansas. Daily driver. I can do it all. It just depends on your skills and your tires LOL
uncensored_84@reddit
Depends upon how much time you spent in the car. If you put anything more than 10000 miles per year, maybe its worth for getting luxury otherwise it is just wastage of funds. I would rather spend that in improving house I live - so I can enjoy the more of luxury there....
Jdsmitty10@reddit
I would rather have a daily and a nice sports car like an RCF or Supra(manual). Can’t afford that right now so I got a sporty daily. 2025 Model 3 Performance.
sprchrgddc5@reddit
I have two cars. A daily dad car and a project car. Tbh with you, it’s tiring to maintain both. I think if I was single with no kids, it would be fine.
When you’re limited on time on the weekends, and, for example, both cars need an oil change, you don’t want to waste it on your project car because your daily is more important. Prior to kids, I would have spent all weekend messing around with both cars.
I much rather have one singular cool car that does it all. A “performance” SUV, such as the X3 M40i. But OP, idk your life situation.
Jjmills101@reddit
A car that does it all will always be worse at some of the things I want it to do. For example, if I like to be comfortable, but also like the experience of a loud, lightweight, and raw sports car on the weekends, those two things are directly in conflict with each other, so I’d much rather have a more comfortable daily and a weekend sporty car.
I happen to not care a ton about being comfortable, but my tolerance for ultra stiff suspension in a daily is certainly lower than it is for a weekend car. I also sometimes need 4 seats and some modicum of practicality. For me a new wrx as a daily and an mr2 as a weekender was perfect. I could probably satisfy what I like with a more upmarket sports car, but I also can’t really afford that. There are very few manual sports cars under 45k that give the combined experience I want of an analog 90s car on the weekend but the practicality of a sedan on weekdays.
l5555l@reddit
If you can afford it more cars are better than 1
ImNotGoodAtArchery@reddit
Rav4 + miata is hella fun & cheap
The_taxer@reddit
You can have the best of both by splitting it up.
Used Macans can be found for under $20k, as can a lot of the other vehicles on that first list. If you do your due diligence you can easily find something that’s been well kept.
mordolycka@reddit
if you plan on keeping it oem, then probably a do it all. if you plan on modding at all, for sure split. there will be periods of time where you're installing mods or doing maintenance where it might be on jack stands overnight (or at least not running). still need a way to get to work
fprintf@reddit
Our best time was when we split cars. We drove a NC Miata during the warm months, taking it off full insurance for 4 months and setting it on a smart charger for the winter. And then drove an awesome Mini Cooper S on all snow tires during the cold months. Nice that it kept the miles lower on both cars, stretching the years between tire and brake replacements, and we got to abuse the Mini year round when we didn’t want to drive the Miata.
Whysenberg@reddit
One daily, one sports/project car.
MWMWMMWWM@reddit
Split. luxury daily driver, a sports car and pickuo truck for weekend projects.
cvb72@reddit
I'm somewhat in-between. F150 for winter and a lot of weekend driving for projects (Home Depot runs), and an AMG GLC 43 for the fun ride and good weather road trips.
Wne1980@reddit
It’s awfully nice to have a dedicated fun car if you can afford it. I wouldn’t want something as impractical as my NA Miata as my only vehicle, but there are few better cars for just enjoying a nice drive. When I’m picking modifications, I don’t have to worry about daily drivability because that isn’t what it’s there for. The daily is fun too, but an entirely different sort of fun that doesn’t really compare
Same_Revolution4666@reddit
Suv for the wife sedan for me.
Ok_Fig705@reddit
Rather own a car that will last more than 10 years but that's just me
Crox456@reddit
Subaru Forester XT: Daily commute, 40 miles; numerous weekend forest lake fishing trips. 11 years old, 200K miles.
2015 Mustang GT: Weekend, 6k miles a year.
With insurance becoming an issue. More maintenance probably coming due, time to swapped them both for a newer Subaru Outback XT, turbo engine.
bootheels@reddit
Well, money aside, it is always better to have a regular daily driver and your sports/special car. Nice cars get messed up quickly in lousy weather, parking lots, crappy highways.... Leave the dirty work for the "daily driver"...
MisterBitterness42@reddit
I don’t know exactly what’s meant by doing it all, but generally I think it’s a waste to not daily a nice ride. Like “yeah, I have a Ferrari, you’ll have to take my word for it though because it only sees sunlight twice a year” kind of waste, what’s the point in having a garage decoration like that if you don’t appreciate and utilize it.
I would however have a separate car or truck for winter seasons. But that’s more like switching dailies out of necessity, not because I want to avoid driving one daily
Spiritual-Belt@reddit
I’m always in the camp of daily and weekend car. Your weekend car can be so much more compromised if you have a reliable daily to fall back on. Assuming you have space, it shouldn’t really be different cost wise.
ummmm--no@reddit
if money is no object, get 2 cars so you don't compromise on any aspect. But 2 cars (purchase, maintenance, insurance, etc) is expensive!!
IMMrSerious@reddit
You should not buy a sports car for fun unless you are going to pay cash for it. If I was going to buy another fun car I would get another classic like a GTO Judge. If I were pressed to get something new I'd have to really think about it mostly because I would have no idea idea of where to drive it. I guess I am kinda boring but seriously though I can't think of a bigger way to burn money. If I could get anything I would love a helicopter (straight up baby, straight up!) or a float plane.
somebodystolemybike@reddit
1 daily sports car, 1 4wd weekend rig.
RunninOnMT@reddit
One very sporty car I daily.
I don’t like thinking “I wish I was in my other car” but I’m not dailying a sporty SUV or something. Gotta be a fast sedan or coupe.
Rusty-P@reddit
I’ve done both. I like having multiples that are more focused.

Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is the best all-in-one 2025 model year 5-passenger SUV below the $40K price point. Below the $50K price point, that would be the base-trim 7-passenger Toyota 4Runner.
BVP1324@reddit
I would rather have a good daily car like a Toyota Camry and a fun car like a Jeep Wrangler
haus11@reddit
I'd rather have a sport-ish do it all vehicle and a true utility vehicle. Unless I'm close enough to a track that I could track day something regularly. I used to daily drive a Mustang and theres just not a use case on public roads that makes it worth the utility compromises.
I'd love to have the Audi RS6 Avant as a daily driver and a work truck grade pickup or van for things that require true utility.
jrileyy229@reddit
This is really a use case thing... Are you talking about enjoying some mountain driving with car#2 or going to track days?
Unless it's for a track rat, I'd rather just have one car that can do it all like a macan.
SBSnipes@reddit
Given that I personally have no desire for a sports car, I'm going to take option 3: ultra-practical.
Former-Discount4279@reddit
I would normally say Tesla is the answer but until Musk dies/goes to jail this is a hard recommendation to make now.
Spyderbeast@reddit
I have things split between an older Acura for snow and dogs, and a BRZ as my daily/fun car. Works for me, but I have the garage space
Joblessmouse06@reddit
It depends my lifestyle and budget. If I have only one parking space or limited budget then I have no choice I need the one that does it all but if I have extra parking space or money, why not split.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
There is no car that does everything great; some of the things that make a car good in one spot make it bad in another.
If I have money for separate cars, then I'll have separate cars for separate things.
Realistic_Word6285@reddit
I chose 1 do it all car (X5 40i) but I have 1 sport motorcycle (Ninja 650) instead of the sports car.
Otherwise I'd do 1 daily sporty car like an M340i, and one beater POS for winter or if I am going somewhere sus.
britishrust@reddit
I'd definitely split. But then again I'd rather daily drive the most uncomfortable sports car than ever driving an SUV. So in this particular case, the only way would be to only get the M340i.
DexRogue@reddit
I have a 17 Charger Scat Pack and drive that three seasons then in the winter/work travel I drive my Subaru. I wouldn't change it.
quadrifoglio-verde1@reddit
I'd get a dedicated sports car if you like backroad blasting/ track work If you just having a nice car, then something from the top.
Me, I have one dedicated sports car because it can do 99% of everything I need it to, but sometimes I don't want to put boring miles on it, fill it with rubbish/ building materials, fit more people in.
