I ask every time they charge me, they say they actually pay more and I'm getting a deal, then never show me their actual bills. Everyone I talk to in person says there's no way they're being charged over £750 a month in bills because theyre living alone and only paying £100-150.

No clue where your living but we put 2700 in a joint to pay off all our bills for the house each month. Whats spare we save for the rainy days. Even as a squaddie i paid more than 150 for accommodation & food & that was close to 18 years ago now. Honestly if your living in there home after 18 then you should expect to pay. Alternative is you find a flat or bed share and i promise you it will come to more than £250 for the month.

I live in a household of 4 adults and 3 kids. I'm fully work from home. My gas an electric is £173. My internets are £40. Not sure what water is because they made a mess of it recently but I don't think it's more than £100 a month. Ask to see the bills and then see if you can figure out where the expense is. Maybe you're with an expensive providor and switching will save you shitloads? But if you're paying towards it you have the right to see it. But go in from the 'that seems expensive, can I have a look so I can see if we can reduce our cost?' angle.

£750 is somewhat high if the property is owned and mortgage free, but as others have said, you're not going to live rent or mortgage free elsewhere This all said, if you can't work because of a genuine disability, then it would be good if they could be somewhat more lenient on you perhaps, but this is a very situational situation

I wouldn't be paying anything in rent because it would become part of my benefits and I would have it paid I don't where people are assuming my parents are paying for anything, but no, I pay for my own toilet paper and washing up liquid and sponges and laundry detergent and 1/3 the cost of the washing machine and my own fucking fridge

Family of 5. Combined bills for the house is £2200 so about £450 each. I would say you are getting a bargain. Electric/Gas - £320 Water - £90 Food - £600 Mortgage - £600 Council tax - £280 House insurance - £200 Private dental (no NHS anymore) - £125 Total - £2215 - split 5 ways (all family are adults) £443 each.

Good spot. That’s for the year. So £16.50. Revised per month - £406pm each on a total of approximately £2k. The wife and I put in an extra £100 each to pay down the mortgage. That’s why I had £2.2k in my head. Of course only my eldest pays in as she is working and we take £150 a month off her. That goes into savings every month which we’ll give back to her when/if she ever gets her own place. But, yes, monthly outgoings are pretty high for us, and I would assume that prices are comparable as my wife is as frugal as they come, and we always tend to have the best deals we can for utilities. That reminds me. Add a broadband/telephone package in from Virgin. That’s another £65. Sheesh.

We don't have a mortgage and I don't contribute to food, I buy my own and they buy theirs. I believe I'm council tax exempt so assuming water/electric + insurance it sounds like I am over paying £50 a month.

It really comes down to what bills your parents are lumping into their calculation. £750 for a three person household is about right. My girlfriend and I pay a mortgage on a 3 bedroom house and mortgage plus all expenses is about £2,000 per month. If they are factoring in their food bill then it’s likely you’re not even paying a third I reckon 😆 since my gf and I have been together weekly food shops have doubled from £50 to £100 +

It all depends on your circumstances. Do your parents rent or own? If they own, do they own outright or pay a mortgage? For me and my 3 teens (I own our house outright): council tax £165 pm, £52 extra CT for green bin, gas/electric £140 pm, water £45pm, internet £30 pm, various subscriptions £50 pm (Netflix, Spotify, Disney on family plans), insurances £20 pm For food: £120-£150 pw (depending on what we need extra like hygiene articles, shampoo/shower gel etc, cleaning articles) £75 petrol pm - mums taxi shockingly costs her money Why don’t you have this conversation with your parents? Most of us are not out to con our own kids, mine are lucky that I can manage all our bills on my own, but I gave them the choice: either you save 1:3 of your income in a LISA or you “pay” it to me (so I could put it in their ISAs as additional top ups). Mine all know how much our utilities and CT cost, I have been teaching them since they were small to budget. So, go ask your mum and dad how much they pay and if you still think you could do it cheaper on your own, why don’t you try it for a while?

I don't know what insurance they pay but id love to know how much people pay for contents insurance but I heard it wasnt much a year. I don't use any streaming services because I can't afford them and we don't have cleaners lmao.

I live in a 2 bed place with 1 adult 1 teen. Council tax is £120pcm, water £35, gas/electric £90, broadband £40, phone £25, tv licence £15, car tax £20, car insurance £50, streaming services £20. Rent though is £950pcm. You have said that benefits will pay your rent but this isn't strictly true - they pay up to a specific amount. Where I live they pay max £450 for a 1 bed place or £650 for a 2 bed. Private rent starts at £800pcm for a 1 bed place and 2beds start at £950. It's also impossible to get in Social housing as there just isn't any.

You haven't said if they include your food. Your food bill alone will be over £250 a month. And your full rent is very unlikely to be covered by benefits, especially if you are a private tenant as there is no social housing available.

There are 2 of us in a 3 bed semi, we work full time. We don't have mains gas, so use oil for heating, which is about £1500 a year, although it can vary due to prices changing often. Monthly costs for utilities are £285.25 * Oil £125 * Electricity £83 * Water £52 (not on a meter, would probably be cheaper if we were) * TV licence £13.25 * Contents insurance £12 You then need to add on your food and phone cost. If you want broadband that will obviously cost more. I haven't included council tax as that will be dependant on how much of a reduction you will get as you are on benefits.

It will be quite a unique thing to you unfortunately, that will depend on location. I'm in a 3 bed semi, east midlands, just me and my wife. I WFH every day, she does twice a week. Energy is £120 per month or so, I'll have the heating on if it's cold. We're not on a water meter, but that was £550 for all of last year. I expect much worse this year. Broadband is £54 per month, I'm with virgin media business but will be leaving them soon. You'll have council tax too.

Living by yourself £250 might cover council tax, gas/electric, water & sewage, broadband. Although this can vary depending on area and obviously gas/electric and water is usage based, so that alone over winter can be a lot more. Are you paying for your own food now? If not then it sounds like it would be cheaper for you staying at home paying what you are. No way anyone is covering those all for 100 to 150 a month without any help.
