Why you should buy from local bike shops; a hard lesson learned.

Last August I bought a bike from an online retailer and until last month it was going well; then I broke 2 spokes on the rear wheel and had a flat on that wheel as well. From that point on, my descent into repair hell began. Apparently the gauge of the spokes is custom so no local bike repair shop carries them. Two mobile bike repair shops tried but couldn’t help. One brick and mortar bike shop owner initially had a rather visceral reaction when I came in with the bike. He said that he doesn’t do electrical work on this brand of bikes because they are junk; and in my area, this shop is the only shop that will do electrical work on bikes that they don’t sell. I explained to him that the issue was mechanical not electrical. He did some research and said that he was able to find some online and we’re waiting for them to arrive. I also contacted the manufacturer and they are sending spokes from China. However I now realize that if this bike ever develops electrical problems, it’s done; no one will touch it. So I’ve replaced it; I went to a local bike shop yesterday and bought a new bike, before hand I was able to physically look at the bike, talk to the shop owner. I walked out with the bike then realized that handlebar was too low and needed to be raised. I went back in and with in minutes he adjusted.it higher and I was on my way. He even asked that I come back if it still needed raising further and they would add an extender. However that won’t be necessary, the adjustment was perfect. Because it was local purchase I was able to get that adjustment right away. As for the other bike, once the spokes arrive I will have it repaired then sell it. I’m not saying don’t buy online but if you are going to, at least make sure that the manufacturer has an authorized repair shop in your local area; otherwise save yourself the grief I went through and buy from a local bike shop.
