Got it in one. But beyond just the union it is the odds of him getting hired to actually drive a truck. Smaller ltl without unions hire drivers to drive not work a dock and drive eventually.

Nothing wrong with a union, but ABF and XPO have drivers with a lot of seniority. You will work a lot of random ass schedules for years until those guys quit/retire. It's a long process to get into the gravy runs. Compared to a smaller company, where if you at least show up everyday you are scheduled you might luck into something a lot sooner.

Been driving for Central a year and a half. CT as a whole is a terrible company, but your experience 100% depends on the terminal. I work at one of the better run terminals in the region. We have great drivers and we work well as a team. I have also been to some terminals that are so bad I will refuse to take those runs. Absolute shitholes. All that said, I make great money and our trucks are a lot better than in the past. Just depends what terminal you’re at and what drivers/managers work there. I am not trying to defend CT, just giving my personal experience. Each terminal is like its own franchise. Just better hope you work at one of the good ones.

When I worked there they were bottom of the barrel with pay and benefits in ltl. FedEx and ups doing same swap spots as us were making anywhere from 75 to 125 dollars more than us on the same exact runs.

FedEx depends largely on the contractor you work for. I’ve seen 19/hr, I’ve seen .69cpm starting pay.

If you look at any FedEx truck you’ll see the actual contractor they’re working for. FedEx saw what happened to UPS and decided to contract their routes. Same thing with the package delivery guys. It’s a fucked up system to keep the whole company to unionize. Although teamsters are fighting with Amazon on whether or not drivers are still considered employees even though they work for a contractor.

I work for AAA Cooper and I'm pretty happy with it. I know alot of guys at my terminal left Central and Penske. My terminal is no dock work for drivers unless you really want it. I know some terminals in Illinois are ran super bad. But our terminal in always hiring and is super busy because we are so small. I was originally with XPO and they just let senior guys run everything and new guys are forced to wait 5+ years hoping people retire.

CT driver and I hate the new forklifts. Half the time the computer doesn’t work or the scanner won’t. The company is improving in my area but they did cut our longest run. Went from $130k a year back down to 85k a year. They play favorites on the dock, now that too many drivers need to make up that loss. They write you up if someone moves your truck and doesn’t lock it. But it’s YOUR fault because you were the last one to touch it. I’m looking for maybe trying XPO or go fuel.

You're working the dock before, after, and during your city or linehaul route. You worked in the city 3 days and have to finish the week on overnights? Better pack some Red Bulls. Welcome to the Big Leagues brother. Those 50 year old guys just didn't have those $150k linehaul routes fall into their laps. They ate 10 years of shit and played the game before they got that...and it still sucks lol.

They’re horrible! As a shipper, we refuse to ship anything with them. One of our larger customers automatically assigns carriers and when they assign Central we literally just don’t pick up the phones and lock all the doors at our facility. They’re the worst LTL company.

That's the problem with some LTL companies- you're a dockworker who gets to drive sometimes. The best LTL companies have truck drivers, and they have dockworkers, and they're different groups of people doing different jobs. If you're in the upper Midwest, look into Dohrn after you get a couple years. They're big enough you'll make good money but small enough to have a great corporate culture.

Worked for central transport local driving for about a year many years ago, the nepotism drove me nuts, or rather cause old mate has been here longer he gets this nice cream run not far from the office abd you get to go out to the boonies...of you had an incident where the dock is literally a brick wall (no padding) and it knocked off the airline connectors from the trailer to the second trailer thay you are currebtly not hauling...yeah, those tyre marks on the Dock, they are going on your record...just a crap company, their bs putting shit on the record stopped me from getting a job at FedEx when it was good...but thankfully I got a job ar prodrivers instead...unfortunately you need a few years experience for them
