Best GPU For Gaming on 1440p
Posted by Most_Citron_6921@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 394 comments
Hey guys, so i'm new to building a Pc and I was wondering what GPU to get to play games on 1440p
Jaba01@reddit
The best?
A 5090
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
As a picky gamer I gamed at 1440p on a 3080 with pretty good results for the last two years. I recently upgraded to a 9070XT and that has been a very significant uplift for me at 1440p.
Imo, a used 3080 for a decent price would be decent, and then anything up to a 5070-5070ti/9070XT would be stellar.
vissem2000@reddit
Just made exact same upgrade. Loved my 3080 but the 9070xt is lovely.
mal-sync@reddit
Just got a 9070xt pretty stoked!
quotra1@reddit
Can I ask how you got it?
Carbideninja@reddit
Nice, how much did you get it for?
mal-sync@reddit
$750! Base msrp was gone.
Carbideninja@reddit
Still a good enough deal.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I think you're going to really enjoy it. The market is so crazy in general but for my first team red card I've been impressed over the last couple of days.
Comstedt86@reddit
Replaced a 6800 XT with the 9070 XT. It was a pretty good upgrade, OptiScaler with FSR4 is sweet as well!
mal-sync@reddit
Definitely and I’m upgrading from a 1080 LOL
MrRage450@reddit
Which cpu did you pair with your new 9070 xt?
jerkki123@reddit
I'm upgrading to the 9070xt from a 1070. It served me well for like 5 years at least.
Maegor8@reddit
I’m going from an i2500k and a 770 to a 7800x3d and 9070xt. Built most of the PC yesterday and the gpu gets here on Wednesday. Stoked.
MarcDekkert@reddit
Niceee! I got the exact same rig now! It’s been amazing!!
internet_safari_@reddit
Legendary CPU. I still keep my i5 4570 and R7 1700 around because of how solid they were for the time
lionturtl3@reddit
Still using my 1800x! Just two more days until I allow myself to decide on what my new build will have in it!
formosan1986@reddit
I loved my 1700, literally changed the game when intel stuck to 4 cores for 7 generations
Atroxa@reddit
I love my 7800x3d. I built back in October. Went with a 4080S and I'm happy with that as well.
PapaOogie@reddit
1070 you had for 5 years? What were you using before that? A 660?
dizj@reddit
Same! But also rebuilding the system.. going from 7700k I7 to 9800x3d
Austin_77@reddit
The last bastion of truly great cards
HatHuman4605@reddit
Im still running a 1060 strix 6gb!
Fredasa@reddit
I'm mainly hyped that Nvidia gets a black eye. Whether they like it or not, the optics of having their worst launch ever, followed by AMD stealing what little thunder they did have, is going to ding their bottom line. They won't be able to just proceed as they were originally planning.
NEOclu3405@reddit
Well nvidia has DLSS
Fredasa@reddit
I'll be frank. While I strongly prefer DLSS, including DLSS3 over FSR4, the vast, vast majority of AMD's potential userbase, if they had concerns at all, were primarily frustrated by FSR3's blatant and conspicuous shortcomings. For almost that entire concerned party, FSR4 makes that conversation moot. FSR is absolutely a contender now, and not a dealbreaker.
Again, I personally still prefer even DLSS3 over FSR4 (the latter has worse temporal smearing) but if somebody were to argue the point that DLSS is no longer a strong selling point, I couldn't disagree.
greentintedlenses@reddit
we'll see. It's starting to sound like AMD themselves is dropping the ball with the fake 'MSRP' only at launch.
time will tell
Fredasa@reddit
They sure better not. It's not like the value of their new 9070 cards is massively better than Nvidia's directly-competing GPUs. I personally am okay with paying a little extra to ensure I can use DLSS and that RT isn't hamstrung. These are very non-zero advantages and the pricing makes sense in that context.
Getting a 5070TI at MSRP also isn't some pipe dream, either. Microcenter and Best Buy play ball, and as long as those options exist, there's nothing fake about Nvidia's prices. I got my current GPU from Best Buy.
AShamAndALie@reddit
As someone who sold his 6800XT and got a 3090 solely because FSR sucked even at 4k (and this was May 2023 so FSR 2.2 was already out), I totally agree. Now we see that FSR4 can compete with DLSS3 (CNN) but DLSS4 (Transformer) is massively better (looks better on Performance than CNN on Quality) so yeah, they're kinda back to square one regarding upscalers.
Fredasa@reddit
FSR4 competing with DLSS3 is still kind of up to the individual. Temporal smearing lingers for about twice as long in FSR4 as it does in DLSS3 and that's probably the most blatant artifact of upscaling—the one that sticks out even if you're not actively looking for it. I don't use DLSS4 by preference because it brings some new artifacts to the table for now, so if it's a choice between FSR4 and DLSS3 I'm going to be sticking with the latter.
ThinkinBig@reddit
The issue is still the implementation. FSR 4 is a move e in the right direction, but it's still barely available in any games and even the eventual ability to swap FSR 3.1 to 4 will only help in in very few others. AMD needs to double down on getting it implemented in games
AShamAndALie@reddit
Yeah, even back then when I had my 6800XT, while FSR 2.2 was decent, my terrible experience was mostly due to the fact that A LOT of games were stuck with FSR 1.0
ThinkinBig@reddit
That's exactly the issue, if you look at the upcoming games with FSR list, there are 19 upcoming games slated to get FSR 3.0/3.1 and 22 still set to ship with FSR 2.0
Its pretty disappointing
BASSmittens420@reddit
It seems like it’s the tariffs that are potentially the price increase which if that is the case then that’s not their fault. If that is not the case, then they definitely just used the extra low pricing at launch to build some extra hype and demand before jacking the price up which is for sure shady practices
BlackestNight21@reddit
This is some /r/HailCorporate simping.
BASSmittens420@reddit
I’m not simping for any corporation at all. The cost increase just added up. If that’s not the case then shady for sure. I didn’t know about the fact they were supposed to have dropped earlier and what not that the other reply mentioned which nulls the tariff perspective
Madfutvx@reddit
The cards were supposed to launch at higher price at the beginning of the year, but then they panicked with Nvidia pricing, delayed the launch and offered rebates to retailers. Retailers and card makers still have stock bough at the highest prices so they sell them higher to not lose money
Puffycatkibble@reddit
I remember that was how it started in the CPU space.
AmbitiousTeach2025@reddit
Up until now people were buying nvidia without a second thought, not realizing that AMD has outstanding drivers and GPUs. In fact, AMD has great performance/watt cards.
The RX 6600xt for example was amazing, and you could buy it at 220€-250€.
Terrible-Reach-85@reddit
How did you all manage to get a 9070xt? Do you live near a Micro Center?
Maegor8@reddit
I got mine from Newegg right at 9 am est.
g1ccross@reddit
Same, I went to Micro Center on my way to work and the line was too long. Drove to work and ordered from Newegg in the parking lot. I got to work two minutes before things went on sale.
amick1995@reddit
I ordered one from Newegg, 20 minutes later they canceled the order due to no stock (after charging my card of course).
Glad your order wasn’t canceled! If you don’t have the card yet I bet you’ll love it.
Tried a little longer to get one online and failed. After that I went to microcenter and got there around 9:30, walked in to no line, and got a card.
The only line there was the line for checkout. I’ve been really enjoying the card so far.

Yes I live 15mins away and was lucky to walk in with no wait time either.
demonryder@reddit
Crazy, I got there an hour before opening and it took me 2 hours past opening to get through the line at mine.
wolfieman217@reddit
Amazon had stock for about a half hour on launch day. That's how I snagged mine.
Zac0930@reddit
Same here. Hellhound on Amazon
Ledoborec@reddit
Do you think my 5800x3D would bottleneck Rx 9070 XT on 1440p?
Little_Chapter1132@reddit
lol no. I had a 5800x3D with a 7900XT and cpu usage barely exceeded 50%.
KillEvilThings@reddit
CPU usage amounts =/= whether or not it is bottlenecking.
That said a 5800x3d is basically good up to a 4090.
Silver-Disaster-4617@reddit
How can you recognize bottlenecks through metrics?
KillEvilThings@reddit
FPS on a given game.
Lowest settings possible graphically so GPU is not at max load. See how much FPS it can get without maxing GPU usage.
That's your metric. Sometimes a game might use two cores, others four, old ones only 1 and that'll read as some arbitrary percentage.
Antenoralol@reddit
A 5800X3D can run a 7900 XTX / RTX 4090 no problem.
It'll be fine on a 9070 XT.
dpr997@reddit
Looking at buying a 5700x3d as its the only one for sale in my country, do you think that would bottleneck a 7900 xtx?
Antenoralol@reddit
5700X3D is 95% of a 5800X3D.
It'll be fine.
AShamAndALie@reddit
Its basically the same with lower clocks, I think performance is lower by 5 to 10% depending on the game. Shouldnt be a bottleneck in most games.
Luckyirishdevil@reddit
Not at all
badianbadd@reddit
No, especially at 1440p
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I'm on a 13700k and I am not experiencing significant bottleknecking issues. My understanding is that my cpu would be a little ahead, at least synthentically over a 5800x3d but I don't think you'd see any major issues. That cpu is still a solid performer.
ZssRyoko@reddit
I know it's a few generations old but how high you think you can push the frame rate? With obviois setting reductions? On the fence for a 480 or 360 hz with my 7900xt.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
On a 3080 with tweaks i could still get 120 fps in a lot of popular titles, but there were definitely sacrifices. You probably won't be seeing 120 fps native with high settings on any newer games. 120 is possible with DLSS, medium settings. Some things like reflection and shadows will likely be low.
ZssRyoko@reddit
Ahh, it makes sense. I'm usually hitting 170 in pretty much everything aside from fps drops in crazy scenes, but honestly, stuff like that will never be fixed.
I'm seriously trying to see what I can expect to reach in some easier games and some of the competitive ones I play. But optimization is always all over the place.
I turned off a couple of settings like post processing turning shadows down because "like who cares" and marvel rivals is basically max frames majority of the time.
It's honestly funny because I forgot to change graphic settings and the game still looked amazing. Ultra pretty much everything that wasn't huge performance hit and chugging along great.
The fomo is prob because we see 3k boost clocks.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Honestly i agree with the fomo thing. I feel like if games were actually optimized well these days people wouldn't be wanting new cards as bad. Its hard not to want a new card when so many games just don't run well on mid tier cards. At least, not as well as they probably should.
But I'm picky too, and I'm sensitive to frametimes and framerate dips. Lots of people aren't. I think you're average gamer would probably still have a blast with something like a 3080 or 7800XT at 1440p. I tend to prefer the 3xxx nvidias over 7xxx amd though because honestly FSR3 ain't great, and DLSS is a lot better.
ZssRyoko@reddit
I am fine with soem frame drops but I specifically stopped playing deadlock because of how brutal frame drops got. I think I had way to many settings on, but I'm on an x3d chip in a game that keeps spawning units lol.
But I honestly can't look at normal 60 game dropping to like 100 or w.e is fine. Poe2 dropping to like 90 because like explosions everywhere fine can't really notice.
Something like WoW being pretty much max in frame but can't handle raid finder over 100 fps in raid setting(which is honestly the crazy addons like tsm). It'd just kinda w.e right now. Until they stop rushing developers with deadlines so they can keep optimizing shit before it's released will probably just continue on. Yeah, my best friend literally told me he's happy 1080p 60fps and I'm respectful , but as his best friend inside, I'm secretly going "bro you don't even know."
I think AmD would prob use the 9070xt outrage to just drop fsr4 or something for 7k series. Honestly not sure.
JCOLE6969@reddit
What games do you play
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Lately I've been into Black Ops 6, Space Marine 2, Helldivers 2, Total War: Warhammer 3 and Hell Let Loose.
JCOLE6969@reddit
Is there a significant improvement in every game
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
From a 3080? Yes.
As a good example but representative of my experience across all the titles: on my 3080 i played Space Marine 2 with medium settings and upscaled right over 60fps. 9070XT is all settings High scoring 90 fps native. With FSR4 it's closer to 105-110.
Black ops 6 was a mix of medium and high settings with DLSS quality to hit 115 fps or so on my 3080. Last night I played for a few hours with extreme settings and CAS enabled with fps averages around 155 fps. No actual upscaling. With FSR I get closer to 200.
Imturorudi@reddit
I just bought a 5070ti PC for heavy VR and intensive games (coming from radeon rx570 lol) as my first gaming PC and I can't wait till it arrives, so hyped
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Ayy that's awesome that you got one! I won't lie I was trying for a 5080 or 5070ti but so far I'm happy where I landed. I think anyone being able to get a new GPU at a fair price is lucky right now.
International_Crab56@reddit
Ohh my 9070xt is on the way! Upgrading from 3070ti. I just cant wait xD
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Congrats! I've been quite impressed with mine so far- hope you have many awesome hours of gaming on yours!
Cayde-667@reddit
how many years can rtx 3080 serve me on 1080p ?
I'm looking at a used market for gpu
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Tbh it really depends in the games you play. If it's esports games or older titles your into then probably 3 or 4 more years ngl. If you want to play the newest release maxed out, probably not happening. However if you don't mind DLSS and playing with settings I think the 3080 still has a lot to give. It's about the type of experience you want from it.
Cayde-667@reddit
I'm playing fps and old games sometimes But i need to play new games when get released on good graphics i was thinking of rtx 3080 or rx 6800xt used
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I'd go 3080 if you can get a fair price. I really liked mine and with settings tweaks and DLSS(a big selling point for the 3080 compared to the 6800 imo) I could still get 120 fps in most fps games at 1440p
rwhockey29@reddit
3080 is a solid 1440p card, 6800xt would be VERY close in performance with a cheaper price used as well.
ragnarcb@reddit
No dlss, no practical rt etc make rx6800 or 6900 or 6950 not worth it imo. 3080 or 3080ti would be better in the long run. 4070ti if possible.
Luckyirishdevil@reddit
6800XT performs closer to a 3080ti these days. You don't need DLSS or fake frames if you have the raw horsepower to put out frames.
ragnarcb@reddit
Yes but what happens when the raster performance of both the 6800xt and 3080ti is not enough in a few years? 3080ti will get ahead with dlss. And 6800xt is not even close to 3080ti in light rt loads. I love amd but they just failed to keep up.
Luckyirishdevil@reddit
When neither is enough, I would look around for another budget card to get me by for a few years. Have you forgotten that the 6800XT was released in Oct/Nov of 2020? That's a 4.5+ year old graphics card and technically 2 generations back. This isn't expected to last another 5 years playing the newest games at top specs.
Given AMD's track record of continuing to improve their older cards via driver updates and new tech, I have a feeling we will be seeing FSR 4, or some other tech that limps these cards on a bit longer. Knowing Nvidias track record of abandoning their previous generations, I expect whatever work around AMD comes up with to also help the 3080 ti limp along.
Lastly, no one needs RT. It's a bullshit tech that Nvidia adapted and threw out to set AMD behind. Smart business move, but no one really needs it to play very visually appealing games. RT in games on the GPU was unveiled with the 20-series in September of 2018.... 7 years and we finally have enough games to make it a talking point and are starting to have "budget" (if you call $500-600 budget) cards that can implement it at 60fps. I have a 4090, I don't turn RT on. The FPS hit is too much for me to justify some extra sparkles I the puddles or reflection in the glass
ragnarcb@reddit
I need RT, ok? I don't judge if rt is needed or not, just the simple fact that 6800xt is not a replacement for 3080ti. Dlss is simply miles ahead than fsr now. "NOW". I will be happy if fsr gets improved and beats dlss and introduces ray reconstruction etc, but as of march 2025, 3080ti gives you a better experience than any rdna 2 gpu, in the latest games and "TODAY" logically it seems that anything above including 3080 from ampere gpus will fare better long term. We have a saying in my mother tongue that translates like "if my aunt had testicles, he would be my uncle". You are talking about hypothetical situations and you are judging if rt is needed or not and you are being a fanboy. Also, nvidia has other perks like stability, much better driver, features like dldsr etc. I love amd, but I just can't miss out what nvidia is offering with their gpus even with the price premium over amd. This is applicable to lots of people hence the market share results. (90% nvidia)
Illustrious-Slice-91@reddit
I’m still using my 3080
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Nothing wrong with that at all, 3080 is still a beast for most games/uses.
LexyconG@reddit
It struggles with new games on good settings. I have to turn them down to where the quality clearly degrades.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Yeah that's why I upgraded. But many people happily game on medium or mixed settings these days too.
Illustrious-Slice-91@reddit
But
AuirsBlade@reddit
Call of Duty
StacheSergeant@reddit
So it’s not just me?
noodle3k@reddit
Hey i just upgraded to 9070 XT from a 3060 Ti. Did you need to do anything with drivers and stuff to make sure its running properly? I saw some reddit post saying you need to do alot of stuff in bios. Thanks in advance
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I ran the DDU utility in safe mode and then did a swap to a 7900XTX first. Installed adrenaline and everything worked fine. When I then switched to the 9070XT I had to uninstall then reinstall adrenaline but that was the only issue.
Veyroz@reddit
I literally did the same thing lol, switching from 3080 to 9070 xt
DrNobody95@reddit
have you tried 4k with 9070xt how does it perform?
I'm planning on getting it and play at 4k with fsr4 fg and settings mixed high/medium. i think it will do just fine.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I've not tried 4k unfortunately. I can say FSR4 is very impressive, particularly compared to FSR 3 but even compared to DLSS it's still quite good.
DoriOli@reddit
Haven’t tried FSR4 yet, but Intel’s XeSS 1.3 is magnificent. Curious to see how much XeSS 2.0 will further improve upon that, then compare it to FSR4 and the latest DLSS .
DrNobody95@reddit
yea, i just hope it will boost my fps to a degree. i can set some settings to high without a significant hit to the frames lol.
MajinAnonBuu@reddit
I just watched a couple videos on the 9070xt vs the 3080 and uplift is almost nothing in a lot of games. I would get a 3080 if you can get one for less than a 9070xt.
WarayGudClaro@reddit
I just made this exact upgrade! My card comes in Wednesday, this is awesome to hear since I didn’t know HOW much of an upgrade it was, especially since I also play at 1440p
Embarrassed_Tax_3181@reddit
Pretty curious, I have an over locked 3080 to (3090 base perf) and saw amd claim a 20 something percent uplift between 3090 and 9070xt, and that gain is much lower at 1080p in the leaked AMD benchmarks that match the slides they presented (except they neglected the 1080p slide). So are you sure you feel more than a 25-30% performance uplift? And is it rly worth buying a new gpu and paying the govt taxes over 20%? TLDR I game at 1080p. Would rly rly like to know
Embarrassed_Tax_3181@reddit
Just confirmed 3090 to 9070xt is 39 fps to 41 fps in black myth wukong LOL
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I can say that I have seen 25-35% uplift in the games I play compared to my 3080. Space Marine 2, Black Ops 6, Avowed, and Delta Force all saw major improvements. Space Marine 2 for example I used to get right over 60 FPS with upscaling and medium settings at 1440p. 9070XT delivers \~90 FPS with all settings maxed. Around 110 if I use FSR
Embarrassed_Tax_3181@reddit
Thank you for the reply. I’d also like to think fsr performance (fps penalty for using fsr vs lowering res) will improve over time
BoSknight@reddit
I have the 3080ti but it's chugging on high with avowed and barely handling monster Hunter. I can definitely get some more time out of mine. That 9070 is looking pretty good if I can get one for MSRP though
CodOfThunder@reddit
What has been the uplift like for you? 20 to 30% maybe? Or less?
I am on 3080 too. Really want to upgrade to a 9070xt.
My only concern is gameplay recordings. It seems seamless using the Nvidia app but I wonder if it's as easy on using amd software.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
25%-35% uplift in most games. Not needing DLSS to run 1440p extreme settings in shooters like Delta Force and getting 160 fps. That's been nice. FSR 4 when available has been awesome, Black Ops 6 and Space Marine 2 look and run great with FSR 4, but the native uplift has been significant too. I briefly had a 7900XTX and the 9070XT beat it on Black Ops 6 extreme benchmark by 5 fps.
CodOfThunder@reddit
Wow!
I am still on the AM4 Platform though with 5800X3D. What are you running?
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I've got a 13700k and 32gb ddr4. For fun I just ran the black ops 6 benchmark with ultra settings and no upscale. Avg was 142 fps with a few things running in the background because I was just doing it off the cuff. FSR 4 gives another 10 or so frames in quality, and honestly it does look quite good. I find on my system the water caustic settings make a big difference on some maps like low town too, so could probably squeeze a few more just with tweaking those.
CodOfThunder@reddit
Thanks man. I don't think I'll ever be running it on ultra but great to hear it can handle it just fine!
Thanks for the detailed testing.
Benemy@reddit
Yep, I had a 3070 ti and upgraded to the 9070 xt. It's a big upgrade. Previously I had played at 1440p medium settings with dlss and got around 60 fps. Now I can play at native 1440p high and high ray tracing.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
This was my exact experience. Previously I was needing DLSS and tweaking settings between medium and high usually, and lots of games had frame drops depending on map/area that could be significant. 9070XT has been High or fully maxed out across the board, and 100+ fps in just about every title I've tried.
Benemy@reddit
Yep it was worth standing outside Microcenter for a couple of hours to get it at msrp.
Eqwinoxe@reddit
I’m looking at a 9070XT myself currently. Debating if I wanna fully upgrade my PC from a 5700X with 32GB of DDR4 Ram. I can find crazy good bundle deals from Microcenter
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I kinda felt like maybe doing that as well, but I think I'm just going to stick with my 13700k and 32gb DDR4 for a while longer. I'm not experiencing any benchmarking (and thankfully none of the 13th gen intel issues....yet)
Eqwinoxe@reddit
If I don’t decided to go AM5, I think I’ll just grab a 5800X3D and get the new 9070 XT (hopefully i can get one at MSRP). I’m sure it’ll handle everything I throw at it just fine at 1440p
RavenH1804@reddit
What was the uplift in fps on average? Got a 3080 right now. Going on holiday in april but after that i’m eyeing the 9070xt if it is still available for a decent price.
_AfterBurner0_@reddit
According to Hardware Unboxed, your averages at 1440p should go from 91 FPS to 119 FPS if you went from 3080 to a 9070 XT
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Yeah I'd agree with that overall, but it does depend on the game. About 25-35% most of the time. Some titles are more like 15% and some titles are a bit higher.
reportforafkpls@reddit
what’s the performance uplift from a 3080? i’m on a 3080 and game at 1440p as well.
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
I'm seeing around 25-35% most of the time. I've explained the details in a few comments but the biggest difference has been achieving 120+ fps in most games with high settings and no upscaler compared to needing DLSS and tweaking medium settings for a similar result.
HeyNiceOneGuy@reddit
I have a 3080 and I run it at 5120x1440 - and have been thinking about upgrading. What kind of performance increases have you seen on the 9070XT?
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
Depends on the game, but generally I'd say at least 25-35%. Delta Force, for example, was a game I had to have DLSS on and most settings tweaked to medium to play at 120 fps consistently at 1440p. 9070XT was average 140-150 FPS with Extreme settings and no upscaler.
Space Marine 2 used to give me 60 FPS with DLSS and medium settings. 9070XT gives me 90 fps everything on high and no upscaler. With FSR 4 I get 100+ and honestly I can barely tell the difference between FSR 4 balanced and native.
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Similar, but I was very impressed with how much faster my current 7900XT is vs my old 3080 12GB. Sold the 3080 for $400 to a friend at work for his first PC build, thinking I would be getting a 5080. Bought a 7900XT and an ultrawide instead.
madmike-86@reddit
Which ultra wide did you get, I've been contemplating getting myself.
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Alienware AW3423DWF. It's pretty sweet. Got it open box for $529 I think
BeansOnMePlz@reddit
Agreed I'm still using a 3080 and I haven't had any problems playing games in 2k
onyxgunslinger7@reddit
100%. I really only upgraded because I'm a bit of an FPS snob. For the vast majority of people just playing the most popular titles a 3080 would be great at 1440p.

My 7800XT running pretty much everything on Ultra has been fantastic and exceeded expectation. Don’t plan on upgrading anytime in the near future.
PRGRyan@reddit
I'm playing on ultra 1080p with it, how much fps are you able to reach in 1440p ?
Jon-Slow@reddit
IMO with DLSS4's improvements to 1440p with the transformer model where even the performance mode has become actually useful and better than previous quality mode, the 7800XT is at a much worse place as a pick for someone right now. Today you can put a native TAA 1440p ( or FSR quality mode) side by side a 1440p DLSS4 performance mode and see how DLSS performance comes out looking better in all aspects with a much higher framerate.
Han_Bolo@reddit
I have no clue what any of that means. But when I got my 7800xt a little over a year ago on a Presidents’ Day sale for around $400 ish I wasn’t expecting the performance to be as good as it is. So. Yea I’m sure there’s better stuff out now.
Jon-Slow@reddit
The point of what I said was specifically about after DLSS4 and for anyone deciding to buy anything today
Han_Bolo@reddit
Thanks for all that info then, friend. I’ll reference this if I’m in need of card sooner than expected!
PicklePuffin@reddit
I’m very happy with my 4070ti for 2k. Only time I have to fiddle around is if a game is atrociously optimized. Generally I’m cruising on ultra settings

Love my 7800xt. Sapphire Pure to match my case
helvetica01@reddit
just built my brother his with the 7800 xt. hes currently on a 1080p 165Hz monitor which is overkill but he asked for future proofing so here we are. 1440p will be waiting when hes ready
RepresentativeBig240@reddit
7800xt is king in my book, it legit plays everything at max I throw at it.
Fecalfelcher@reddit
5090 would do it
Jonas_Venture_Sr@reddit
I have a 4090 paired with a 3440x1440 monitor, and there's a few games that I have to turn down the settings, so the 5090 would be the best.
Astrophan@reddit
What games? What is your target fps? Asking as someone with a 3070 with the same resolution lol
Jonas_Venture_Sr@reddit
Cyberpunk with everything cranked gets me about 55fps.

4080 Super here and I get better then that...
What's your CPU?

You ain't wrong, but that's more of a 4k gpu
bensen1296@reddit
OP never set a budget so this is the correct answer
crackedoneopen@reddit
Even with a budget set gpu prices can fluctuate so much it's pretty hard to be able to suggest anything
grimbruva@reddit
Better invest in a H100 just to be safe.
nissen1502@reddit
H100 will be insane with DLSS🤣
HamM00dy@reddit
I think you need to upgrade. H200 to finally game at 1440p
Kenniek22@reddit
I have a gtx 1660 ti laptop and play games at 1440p fine with 60-100fps.
Unable_Taste4838@reddit
Depends on your budget, but imo the 4070 ti super is amazing for 2k
HaagenBudzs@reddit
2k is rather 1080p than 1440p. It's a wrong term for 1440p
Prrg88@reddit
For sure. But the value really depends on your region. It's 30% more expensive than a 9070XT here. Still unsure what would be the better pick, but just saying
Aecnoril@reddit
Was looking at this too but the price jumped to 1100. But I managed to snag a 9070 xt at MSRP and it's beating my brother's 4070 ti super by a margin so I ain't sad

AjAce28@reddit
I don’t doubt it, but is Minecraft really GPU intensive? Are you running shaders?
deadlybydsgn@reddit
FWIW I use mine to play Indian Jones and Alan Wake 2. It definitely has to work to maintain 60 at 1440 with 100% of the RT settings turned up, but it can do it with DLSS frame gen and still look good.
brendan87na@reddit

No_Courage1519@reddit

quilir@reddit
Assuming you are budget conscious: pick a card that has satisfactory (for you) fps results in benchmarks for games (all of them or just those that you are interested in). Maybe bump it one class up if you want some performance safety margin for future games

4080 super
geileanus@reddit
Y'all are crazy out of touch if you recommend a 4080 super for 2k gaming. That's so much more money while a 7800xt does a great job at 2k ultra gaming too.
If OP has fuck you money, then sure. Go get a 4080 super or even a 4090. Might as well then. But if you are on a budget, definitely go 4070 ti super, 7800xt or even a 7700xt if money is bit more tight.
Heck even a 4060 will do a decent job and is currently priced at great prices.
Craig653@reddit
I wish, they are impossible to find for a reasonable price I ended up getting a a 5070 ti.
MistakeOld1287@reddit
Hey, 4080 beats 5070 ti unless you use it for productivity, and reasons to buy 5070 ti is DLSS4 4 and gddrs7 but many reviewers said this 50 series cards are just ti versions of old 40 series and nothing much difference In FPS and the main reason not to buy Unacceptable price.
Craig653@reddit
Yeah I know. I want a 408p super, just can't find one for a reasonable price.

I wish, they are impossible to find for a reasonable price I ended up getting a _____ );
Craig653@reddit
So sad but true at the moment. I am massively regretting waiting for the 50 series. I should have just got a 4080 super last fall.
But my gpu needs a swapping. So it's time unfortunately
MistakeOld1287@reddit
That's what the same happened to me, I also waited for 50 series but it's crap and left only regrets, it's hard to buy 4080 now scalping have put it on 4090 price.
driftw00d@reddit
Me too. Or at least the 7900xtx when it was under 800. Otherwise have a 2080 that I can't really use on 4k TV so I just use ps5 and haven't played a pc game in ages.

max_7th67@reddit
Nah I didn't actually buy it. I got the computer from my uncle since he bought a new one. I would assume he switched the GPU beforehand cus he was able to play any game on max graphics, and now my father says it should still be possible. (I also has i5 3550 CPU lol)
orrzxz@reddit
I'd get a any 12-16GB card that isn't more than 2 gens old. Depends on what you can find, and for how much.
I recently upgraded my 3070 to a 5070ti for work. If not for work, I'd still be gaming on it today. It's VRAM is running dangerously thin, which is why I recommended cards with more memory, but I was playing almost everything on high/ultra 1440p with DLSS Quality without a hitch. Don't be afraid of the older gens.
Parking_Isopod_6571@reddit
3070 if you are on a budget, 4070ti is just right.
SlicingYeti@reddit
I have a 3080ti and game at 1440p and it's absolutely the sweet spot for that card. Powerful enough to get decent frames in pretty much any game and on a 27inch monitor, 1440p looks crisp and clear.

Not always the best, I can take 2k from my savings and buy a 5090, buts that's stupid, because:

peperonipyza@reddit
The way the GPU market is nowadays, you kinda just need to see what you can find, see if that price looks reasonable for the card, and check the performance to what you plan to do with it. It’s not the easiest process, but hopefully things will even out a bit. Get a list of a few GPUs you think will do what you need and see what you can find.

if new gen go ahead 4070 super and 9070 XT for the price
-Questees-@reddit
I bought a 4070 Super last year and I am very happy with it. Works good for 1440p, although with RT on in some games it's a bit underperforming for what I was expecting. Wish I would've bought a 4080 in hindsight. NOTE: I did fiddle with a lot of windows and Nvidia settings to get it running so well, but there are loads of videos about it (I wouldn't edit ur registry though).
I guess 5070 ti would be great. The new 9070 xt card from AMD looks promising as well, although I prefer Nvidia myself. Half a year ago I would never have advised to buy an AMD GPU, but I have to admit this card looks promising. I still lean towards Nvidia though.

Jezwinni2790@reddit
It really does depend on what games you play more than anything.
I only play rocket league, EAFC, Worms wmd, 2k PGA, and Fortnite so my 3060 is still holding it's own. My monitor is 120 Hz and it reaches 120 FPS in those games.
Don't feel you need to be hitting crazy high FPS, 60 FPS is a really nice gaming experience, don't be sucked into thinking you need more.
Crafty-Photograph-18@reddit
What games, what settings, what targeted FPS?
The best GPU to get is 5090.
The best GPU to get in order to have 240 stable FPS in CS2 on minimum settings in FHD and not to overspend is, probably, smth around the RX 7600 XT
bryner17@reddit
I’ve been rocking a 3080 and haven’t had any issues. Of course AAA games at max graphics won’t run like crazy but never been lower than 80 fps playing HFW, TLOU, Spiderman with maxed out settings. Esports do run like butter

EvanBetter182@reddit
I have a 3090, how would a 9070xtx compare?
Squishy_singer@reddit
I mean depending on your budget i’d say 6700xt if you can find it. Very cheap for the performance you get, i’ve had mine for about a year now. Can play any competitive game at high fps while getting 60-70fps in more demanding games at high settings like TLOU pt.1 and getting closer to 100fps on high-ultra in slightly less demanding games. RDR2 and GOW.
DoctorArK@reddit
Honestly dude, the 3080 still bangs and a 6950xt or 7900 GRE is plenty for 1440p. The 9070xt is the golden child right now at $600, rivaling the performance of the 7900xt ($800 card from last gen) and is neck and neck with the 5070ti, which is out of stock and thus has skyrocketed in price to nearly $1000 (get the FUCK outta here).
Now the 9070xt has its own stock issue, so you will have to wait to get your hands on one, but it’s worth it, given its ability to enable FSR4, AMD’s competitor to DLSS, which uses Ai to upscale frames and thus boosts fps performance with minimal visual downgrades on the “Quality” setting.
But an older 6950xt and the 7900 GRE are awfully close to the 9070xt in performance, with the 7900 GRE being around 8-15 fps slower. Not a huge boost in my book, especially since both cards perform well at 1440p.
For absolute minimum budget, a 3080 will get the job done, but be careful, it does have a lack of VRAM compared to more recent cards, meaning it’s going to eventually start to run into bottlenecks, but likely not for a few years.
I’m currently gaming on a 3090 because of a nice Facebook Marketplace find where someone was selling a set up including a beefy OLED monitor for around $1700. The 3090 and 3080 trade blows in every title, but the 3090 has a whopping 24 gigs of VRAM. I currently get high frames with Raytracing enabled at every title including Cyberpunk 2077 and it looks amazing on this high end monitor.
crackmalta@reddit
I agree with this analysis but keep in mind the longevity the 9000 series will have over the 7000. With FSR4, the 9000 series will have a substantial advantage. In fact i was in a weird position, 640 euros for a GRE or 720 euros for the 9070. I opted for the latter even though its still above MSRP but that’s Europe for you.
Leisure4me@reddit
I have an rx 6950 xt and it runs every game I've thrown at it at very good frame rates (Starfield in New Atlantis was the "worst", dropping just below 60 at times in New Atlantis w/o FSR).
Got it for 483 euros and couldn't be happier. Outstanding GPU. It just gets really hot, above 80c when at max power for long enough.
digitalsmear@reddit
Definitely go for the 3080ti over the 3080, if you can, though. That extra vram makes a difference. I'm doing well with it at 4k w/ dlss in tons of games.

First challenge is to find a gpu at affordable price
shadowlid@reddit
As another user has said Ive been gaming on a RTX3080 since (December 2020) and its been a great 1440P gpu, and still is on many games you will be in the 80-120fps range depending on settings.
But I just got a 9070xt and have doubled my FPS in some games like Warzone and Arma reforger. I didnt really need to upgrade but my biggest issue with the 3080 is the 10gb of vram some games are already maxing it out so I thought I would strike while the iron was hot and grab a 9070xt to get that extra 6gb of Vram. I fully intend to run this card for 4-5 years as well.
My advice to you is get a GPU with 16gb of Vram as even 12gb is not enough anymore 16gb needs to be the minimum for 1440P gaming you can get by with less vram on 1080P.
P.S. I also have a Intel Arc A770 16gb and its an amazing card for the price I paid $269 (Microcenter) I use it in my living room PC and play games like fallout 76, No mans sky, Hell Divers 2, Palworld, BF 2042 all at 4k 45-60fps on low to medium settings. So at 1440P you should have zero issues with this card. If you can find one cheap.
PigSlam@reddit
I just replaced my RTX 3070 FE with an RX 9070. I hopped on Newegg the morning they came out, and I was able to get an Asrock Steel Legend overclocked version for $639. It was the only thing not sold out, so I pounced. So far, it's been running at slightly higher power levels (245W vs 220W for the RTX 3070) but with ~15C lower temps, and 50% higher frame rates at maxed out settings on my 3440x1440 monitor.
LGHT_Rider@reddit
TLDR: Do research, tell us your budget and my recommendation.
My worst upgrade was from 1050 to 3060. But I can say I have awesome performance on my 4070ts. Just do your research on stats based on your budget and card availability. If you have a massive budget I would spring for a good 4090 card. But if not would be worth looking at what has excellent performance wether it's a 3080/90 new or used or 4070ts or just Ti or other cards in your budget. If you gave us a ballpark figure of you budget people could help you alot better.
But IMO I would go for a 4070ts it has served me will gaming in 1440 144hz monitor can get good frames over 90 most titles I play are max graphics or slightly tuned for better performance with no to little fidelity. That's without RT and frame gen. Lots of games I play I get 144locked. My build is a little mismatched. I could eek out more performance with a Mobo update to AM5 chipset and faster ram and faster NVME drive. But I don't play much games lately so I'm happy with the performance I get.
excelionbeam@reddit
Generally speaking you have 4 good options if you want brand new cards. In order 9070xt (most cost effective) -5070ti (it’s like a tiny bit better than 9070xt but costs more, they are making more cards at msrp or close now but mileage may vary)- then 5070 and 9070 are tied for third place. Yes despite the reviews for the price (most I’ve seen are at msrp) 5070 is a decent card. 9070 I don’t really recommend cuz while it’s basically the same as a 5070 if you’re already going amd you might as well grab an xt. If you’re willing to go used a 4080s or 4070ti super are pretty great cards, will get dllss4 too.
LysanderBelmont@reddit
I am on the 4080 super and love it.

I got decent-ish performance out of my rx6600 in some of the games i played. Cant do most games from the last 2 years very well but I’ve been happy on the performance for any games outside that range
_Metal_Face_Villain_@reddit
the 5070 ti would be the best for 1440p if it was sold at msrp. with all the gpu prices as they are right now, you'll be robbed no matter what you buy, so it's better to wait a couple months.
Mayumi_S@reddit
Just made the switch from nvidia to amd with the 9070 XT Hellhound. And gotta say for the few days that I have had it, it's amazing! Would recommend, and easier on the wallet.
kiingjamir@reddit
If you only want to spend under $200 i would say a 6700XT. Can play at high or ultra setting in 1440p. Pair it with a decent cpu and you’re good. This is the cheapest option i would personally go.
If you really want to go even cheaper, the only other option is Nvidia. You could purchase a 1080ti but thats becoming a bit outdated. But will get the job done at medium high graphics at 1440p.
SirKadath@reddit
I have 4070 Ti Super I max everything out , except for certain lighting settings on RDR2 & Ray tracing on Cyberpunk monster hunter wilds is also pretty damn taxing for some reason but everything else out there no problem
s3rgioru3las@reddit
Depends what games you play and your budget. Indiana jones and cyberpunk with ray tracing? 5070 ti would be a good pick for $750. If you don’t mind slightly less ray tracing performance the 9070xt for $600 is a great choice.
TheBossnian123@reddit
The fun part will be finding either of those cards at that price
deadlybydsgn@reddit
For whatever reason, the Asus Prime line is one of the few ones I've seen consistently selling at MSRP. Their TUFs, meanwhile, are $100+ more like the other AIBs.
Silly-Conference-627@reddit
Well at least in Czechia the 9070XT actually sold for 720€ which is 600€ without taxes.
Meanwhile the 5070ti is hopelessly sitting at over 1200€ so that's that.
Echelon_11@reddit
It depends on the refresh rate of your monitor, and how important that is to you. 1440p at 60 FPS has a much lower GPU demand compared to 1440p at 240 FPS, for example.
CounterSYNK@reddit
5090
skrukketiss69@reddit
On NVIDIA's side I think it's 4060Ti 16GB and up to get into 1440p without having to make too many sacrifices to settings etc.
Ideally you would want to spend a little more if you can. Right now the best value GPU is probably the 9070/XT, assuming it's available and at MSRP.

Honestly? The best one you can afford. People here will tell you AMD. It costs more but go NVidia. DLSS and Frame Gen is almost voodoo magic tier. If you were rendering video? I'd say consider AMD. But you said Gaming, and the features Nvidia provides are too good to ignore. Even for the premium. If you get a 90 series, you can run local AI models too just for fun. It IS fun!
itsamamaluigi@reddit
Even the base model 9070 (as opposed to the 9070 XT) is an outstanding 1440p card. The XT model is slightly faster for only slightly more (MSRP is only $50 extra), but if you can find the base 9070 for a reasonable price there's nothing wrong with it.
Drchomo-47@reddit
5080 without frame gen with everything on ultra settings gets me 130-170fps in KCD2. Gets me 140-160fps in Avowed (>300fps w/frame gen). I believe I was getting >120fps with Wukong. Only played it for 30 minutes before I decided it wasn’t my jam. That’s about all that I’ve played on it. 3440x1440. Could probably stand to drop down to a 5070ti.

Still rocking my 3080TI, I use it at multiple resolutions ( multi monitor set up and OLED TV ) 2560x1440, 3440x1440, 5120x1440 and 3840x2160. 2560x1440 of course is the best performance but with a few tweaks to settings in games when playing on the other displays I still get solid performance. I’d like to upgrade one day but currently see no need, especially with the games I play and GPU prices in NZ are ridiculous.
scotbud123@reddit
I just got a 9070 XT to go along with my 9800X3D for my new 1440p build.
The 9070 XT seems like the best price to performance ratio to get good 1440p performance.
cptchnk@reddit
A really good 1440p experience with RT on a brand new card? RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT. But neither one exists at MSRP right now. These are both being scalped for $1,200+ in my neck of the woods.
Last gen card? 4070 Ti Super or 4080/4080S, if you want good RT. 7800 XT or 7900 XT if RT is not a big priority for you. But those have all gotten pretty expensive, too.
1080p cards are literally the only things you can buy at sane prices right now.

A 9070XT is perfect for that application. It's also the only thing you're likely to be ABLE to purchase at the moment without getting gouged.

With DLSS4 you now can use 4060ti 16GB using DLSS performance and have DLSS quality results. So basically you can play future games in 1440p or even 4K if you do not mind 60fps. If you think of 100fps or even more then you need 4070ti or even 4080

9070xt. Would also recommend the 7900XTX, as the extra VRAM will give you more mileage in the long run, particularly with the wave of unreal engine 5 games really pushing cards.

Need more info for a better reccomendation tbh. If you do like ray tracing and play games that have good ray tracing integration, 4070ti is going to be a good option.
If you can find AMD for a good deal, something like 7800xt will be good. Or the new 9070xt if you can find one. But keep in mind the ray tracing is gonna be not as good for sure.

7800xt for an affordable in sto k option. I have it and playing games in 4k with fsr. It would handle 1440p native easily.

I have a 7900XT 9070XT and 3090Ti in different systems with the same CPU(except the 7900XT system}and I can comfortably say they all do great at 1440p and 4k
I would make sure whatever you buy has 16GB or more of video memory, My 3090 and 7900XT both do better than the 9070XT in MSFS 2024 because it runs out of video memory occasionally but less often at 1440p, but when memory is not an issue then they all perform pretty much the same.
but I'm going to go out on a whim here and say that 16 GB should be the new standard for 1440p gaming we are getting so close to going over 10 GB in many titles that the extra breathing room is nice
