What's the deal with fake frames (frame gen)?

I admit my naivety on this subject as someone who hasn't used it as i have an older card. But why is it a bad thing? If the performance uplift is there and it's *indistinguishable* from "real" frames, I feel like I wouldn't care. Performance is performance, I'm not too concerned with how it's achieved. I do understand the shady nature of comparing benchmarks of new cards using it to old cards not using it, but still. Is the hate for frame gen due to their being a noticeable quality/smoothness/ responsiveness drop? I'm looking for education on the subject before my next upgrade in the next year or so.
