YS1624@reddit
You might consider station wagons from Peugeot in particular. Damn they are ugly. And while you're at it all station wagon cars from any brand. If you have too much money and absolutely no taste, those are the ones to go đ
popcornfart@reddit
A few more shooting brakes:
Volvo c30 Mgb gt Jensen gt Ferrari ff
Elvis1404@reddit
Lancia Beta HPE https://images.app.goo.gl/MUSLApFwjZ2vbYCd7
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Wow! Super cool!
Elvis1404@reddit
There was even a supercharged 2.0L version, called "Volumex"
DakarCarGunGuy@reddit
Both hideous and glorious........it has to be a crazy color to pull that off. It has a "Step into my office" look to it. Not sure I'd trust that type of person.
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Damn, that IS amazing!
Comprehensive-Cry636@reddit
OP said affordable and you pulled up the FF lol
xrelaht@reddit
They ainât that pricey (for a Ferrari).
time_to_reset@reddit
He left off the GT4C though
Dickcheese-a1@reddit
He missed the bloody Reliant Scimitar ,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Reliant_Scimitar_GTE_(1975)_-_14041277835.jpg
travelingbeagle@reddit
Itâs affordable if youâre rich.
Mokumer@reddit
The Volvo c30 is actually a very pretty car from all angles and very practical.
coppertech@reddit
The interior, tho, they made it look like it was cut from cereal boxes.
Mokumer@reddit
True, as with most cars from that era.
Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot@reddit
I love the look of the back end on it. I hear the narrow hatch is not as convenient as a full lift gate, but it does look good.
LtDarthWookie@reddit
I love my volvo c30. It's such an awesome car.
ScissorNightRam@reddit
Cool cars!
In a weird way, I want that C30 eDrive. The hyper miler special. Lightweight, 1.6 diesel, manual only, skinny tyres. Not sure why, but it seems like it would be fun and characterfulÂ
EastLimp1693@reddit
Dont get drive, get d2. First had 16 valve engine, way less reliable than latter upgraded 8 valve in d2. Had v50 d2 manual for couple of years, awesome car. 737k km on the clock when i sold it to a friend.
LtDarthWookie@reddit
I've got the 2.5 turbo 5cyl and it is an absolute joy to drive. I just wish I had the manual. Although I sold a manual Mazda to get it because of the commute I had which was full of stop and go.
7LeagueBoots@reddit
I had an MGB GT for a while. Blast to drive, but they need constant maintenance.
PigSlam@reddit
I always wished I had a reason to have a C30.
mostly_kinda_sorta@reddit
"because I want one" seems like a good enough reason unless it doesn't work for your needs.
PigSlam@reddit
Yeah, I didnât have a need for one, a place to keep an extra car, or the money to buy it, so I didnât, but that doesnât mean I shouldnât want one.
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Wow, Jensen GT! Love Jensens!
KeeganY_SR-UVB76@reddit
My dad used to race in an MGB GT.
tomjoad2020ad@reddit
Man, that Pulsar fastback always makes me yearn whenever I see one
xaxiomatikx@reddit
I always loved the looks of these when I was a kid. Only ever saw them with the coupe roof. Several years ago I stumbled across one parked on the street. Stopped to snap a pic and ended up chatting with the owner. It was for sale, and he even had the super rare wagon roof. Unfortunately, he had painted it an awful color, and I already have enough projects. I did end up buying some 300zx brakes from him.
steavoh@reddit
It looks like the car from the original Inspector Gadget cartoon.
Crazycoallover@reddit
Is that a shooting brake?
nrfx@reddit
These all are afaik.
Shame they're virtually extinct.
chairman_mooish@reddit
I am going to disagree. There is a definition of a shooting brake that suggests that the measurement between the rear edge of the front wheel arch and front of the door must be greater than the measurement between the rear of the door and the front of the rear wheel arch for it to be considered a shooting brake.
rally91@reddit
I know someone that has one, its 4AGE swapped, pretty rad.
ShaggysGTI@reddit
Found one in a junkyard once. Tools everything in me not to go into debt buying that top.
BusyBullet@reddit
Me too. I wanted one of these when they came out.
Mobile619@reddit
My 2nd grade teacher had one with the hatch, and I thought she was cool. The modular design was pretty innovative and different.
lavardera@reddit
my second grade teacher had an E-Type. Does that count as a shooting break?
MilleniumPelican@reddit
shooting brake
Rooby_Doobie@reddit
I think the 2+2 definitely does
Dr_Adequate@reddit
I had one, it was super cool to me, fun to drive, and super practical. As far as I know the SportBak only came in grey, but there used to be a guy around where I lived who painted his black to match his car. It looked so good.
YYCDavid@reddit
Agreed. I really liked the concept of a modular car
BlvdBrown@reddit
When I was a little kid in the 80s, I drew a car catalog where you order all the modular pieces to assemble a complete car. It's a fun idea
2ManySpliffs@reddit
I had the Volvo 480 in the 1990s and it was a decent car for weekend touring, not as quick or sharp handling as a Golf GTi but more comfortable and better looking imho.
kilertree@reddit
Does the Mercury Capri with the bubble hatch count
thejesterofdarkness@reddit
My personal â87 Nissan Pulsar NX equipped with a CA18DET & SportBak.
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Wow! It's a beauty!
thejesterofdarkness@reddit
Thanks. Itâs fun as hell to drive, that DET engine is what SHOULD have been in it in the first place.
juttep1@reddit
Honda crosstoursnare fairly undesirable at this point and I'm sure you could pick up a reliable more modern clown shoe for cheap
lucian1900@reddit
Smart Roadster Coupe.
Odd_Possibility_2277@reddit
How is a z3m affordable lol
delicate10drills@reddit
Thereâs a few on CL right now for under $30K.
Odd_Possibility_2277@reddit
That's about 18/20k for a 20 year old car that's not affordable lol
Scoopdoopdoop@reddit
My stepdad had one for a bit and it was ridiculous and I loved it. He sold it and I'm still pissed. He ended up getting a Volvo t5 and he also had the coupe version of the Volvo pictured above.
delicate10drills@reddit
Get a job you lazy hippie!
Thijm_@reddit
1 shooting brake 2 clown shoe 3 shooting brake 4 hatchback
SiskiyouSavage@reddit
Shooting brake cars. There is some good looking ones.
EdBarrett12@reddit
Always loved the Ferrari FF despite it looking a bit like a swollen thumb.
FlyingVentana@reddit
the gtc4lusso looked better imo
SiskiyouSavage@reddit
Negligible differences. A few HP, different grill, 4w steering on the lusso. Same motor and body.
FlyingVentana@reddit
the rear is a bit different too iirc, i couldn't stomach the ff but when i saw the gtc4lusso i went "that's exactly how it should have looked from the beginning"
DeadFuckStick59@reddit
dont care what people say. that car is rad as hell
Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot@reddit
One of the lost boys - along with its sibling, the tall wagon.
Agreeable_Proof2760@reddit
Honda Accord Aerodeck, MK3 VW Scirocco, and the Volvo C30 come to mind- most other "shooting brake" cars are exotics like the Ferrari FF / GTC4Lusso and the Zagato Astons.
jmachee@reddit
I'm still mad we didn't get the Mk3 Scirocco in the US. >:(
LtDarthWookie@reddit
Have a c30 and love it. I also absolutely love that accord.
AlfaZagato@reddit
Aerodecks are pretty exotic anymore anyways.
AdjunctFunktopus@reddit
VW Fox
Funkgun@reddit
And itâs sibling the Dasher.
FukkYourGod@reddit
That Volvo is sick
ScottaHemi@reddit
Geo Storm wagon?
delicate10drills@reddit
That Volvo is easily the best looking of them all.
Chevrolet Vega Wagon was pretty good looking too, but in safely driving condition theyâre probably more rare now than the es1800âs, yet likely half the going price too.
BMW e36 tiâs are functionally very clown shoe, but look like a coupe with the tail chopped off.
max_pin@reddit
There are two Volvos, but I think I know the one you mean.
delicate10drills@reddit
The P1800-based one, omg. Theyâre so pretty that Iâd be happy to have one even if it came to me stickerbombed & drift-car converted or camo wrapped & stanced to oblivion by some dumb rich teenager.
xrelaht@reddit
A drift missile built on an 1800ES would be fun to see. Take a rare combination of taste to end up with one.
Long_Audience4403@reddit
My dad has built (and then sold) a few p1800s as a hobby over the last 30 years and I'm so covetous. Never done a wagon tho.
ibetterbeonmyway@reddit
Ya, love that shade of green
delicate10drills@reddit
Not the fwd hatchback.
legal_stylist@reddit
Reliant scimitar GTE.
Opinionsare@reddit
I disagree: jacked up oversize pick-ups are clown cars.Â
Subtraktions@reddit
Honda Civic si from the 80's?
Subtraktions@reddit
Depends on your definition of affordable but the Lotus Elite type 75 from the 70's is one on the coolest Shooting Brakes.
Willing_Log6096@reddit
Mazda 3 Hatchback
MatHoffmann@reddit
I wish they made a 3-door version
b000mbox@reddit
BMW 1 series from 2005
Razo-E@reddit
Geo Storm
Novogobo@reddit
isuzu impulse
Voronthered@reddit
Oh I do love a shooting break! Love the Volvo's, may I add to list
The Reliant Scimitar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliant_Scimitar
Jaguar XJS Lynx Eventer https://www.aronline.co.uk/the-converters/lynx-eventer/
testing123-testing12@reddit
I can't believe no-one has mentioned the smart roadster coupe yet
https://www.topgear.com/sites/default/files/2023/12/083325100_1231347033.jpg
Venator2000@reddit
The front bumper of the last one sticks out so far you could use it as a table.
burgonies@reddit
I love that goofy-ass BMW so much
Berry_Togard@reddit
Isnât the clown shoe a nickname given to the bmw m roadster? I havenât heard of any other car with that nickname. Proper name for that style of car body is shooting brake.
delicate10drills@reddit
Yup. Thereâs three things in this post: 1) two hatchbacks 2) a Shooting Brake 3) The Clown Shoe
And in the thread theres a number of people talking about their favorite Hatchbacks and most of the others are talking about Shooting Brakes with a small remainder talking about Die Turnschuh produced by BMW M from 1998-2003
ScissorNightRam@reddit
Toyota did quite a few 2 and 3 door wagon-coupes in the late 70s and early 80s
djscoots10@reddit
I want them!
thisismeingradenine@reddit
That first one looks like itâs stuck halfway through an Inspector Gadget transformation.
iandix@reddit
If you can find one not rusted back to Mother Earth a Honda Accord Aerodeck. Had one in the 90's and loved it!
mmceorange@reddit
My first car was an 86 Mazda 323 LX wagon with manual
PoofBam@reddit
I love the Pulsar and the ugly BMW.
Rare-Parsnip5838@reddit
Don't know your definition of affordable but I love em all ! Very much a sucker for any long roof or shooting brake. Esp 2 door.
MMRIsCancer@reddit
John Dodd's The Beast
5_wordsorless@reddit
Reliant Scimitar
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Those are cool! Though hard to get in the US
ForeverInThe90s@reddit
Iâve always wanted to build a Volvo P1800 Sports Estate with a Nissan SR20DET under the hood.
Unfortunately, the costs of both have just gone a bit high for me to make it makes sense(some sense).
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Yeah...that would be one hell of a car!
Tantaroba-the-fat@reddit
Polo 86c steilheck
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
oh! those are cool!
Upstairs_Principle48@reddit
Shooting brakes are cool
Pattern_Is_Movement@reddit
they have a name, shooting brake... don't be disrespectful calling them clown shoe cars.
Street-Dependent-647@reddit
CRX? Taycan Cross Turismo?
iamasharat@reddit (OP)
Oh! Forgot about the CRX. I prefer the two doors, so Taycan is out for me. But overall, beautiful car.
Street-Dependent-647@reddit
Cool, yeah itâs probably more of a wagon. Lots of love for the C30 here I would absolutely drive one of those, but probably the pre-facelift model for that true Volvo flavor.
GoNe2heLL@reddit
89-92 Dodge Colt
JARDIS@reddit
Oh weird. We never got that horrendous wagon style EXA in Aus. The standard coupe is so much cooler.
Irrebus@reddit
Always wanted a Pulsar or 2000
Kotukunui@reddit
My brother in law has three Volvo 480 hatchbacks. They were given to him as unroadworthy, and he is fixing them up as a fun project. He will sell two of them.
The third one is being worked. He has just about finished transplanting a Lexus V8 into it. He has upgraded the gearbox, suspension, and brakes to match. It also involved quite a lot of cutting and welding bodywork to fit everything. The engine install looks beautiful, and it's going to be a wolf in sheep's clothing road burner.
GoldPhoenix24@reddit
2 bmw wagon, was so close... its like uncanny valley for a beautiful wagon... something about the back and that back of the roof line is not right. could have been a 10.... but its weird like they did 80% of the car and left the back for some intern to do at the last minute.
3 volvo wagon, is sexy af.
5_wordsorless@reddit
Lancia HPE
Illustrious-Set-9230@reddit
Iâll take that 1800! Always loved them. (Even with SU pots)
AlFrescofun01@reddit
Reliant Scimitar and Jaguar Eventer (not quite so affordable though)
DMala@reddit
Not as elegant as âshooting brakeâ, but I like it.
PM_ME_YER_MUDFLAPS@reddit
Only one and four are the real clown shoes.
Rooby_Doobie@reddit
But but, the M coupe is THE clownshoe
didjeffects@reddit
? Why doesnât the M Coupe qualify?
ash_274@reddit
Reviews at the time were ecstatic that it had near-perfect 50/50 weight ratio, so its handling was a bit better than the standard M3
PM_ME_YER_MUDFLAPS@reddit
It actually has a decent engine.
didjeffects@reddit
Ha, fair enuf.
ROU-Revisionist@reddit
Love me a shooting break.
My dad once has a Mk I VW Polo estate. It was a shooting break, and was powered by a 1.3 N/A indirect injection diesel. It did 0-60 eventually. I thought it looked quite pretty.
L00pback@reddit
Geo Storm wagon
benmarvin@reddit
Some older Civic hatches might fit the category.
