When’s the best time to tell roommate I’m moving out?

I’ve decided I need to move out to my own place, but this means my roommate will likely have to move as well as I pay the majority of the rent. She’s about to go on holiday for a couple of weeks, should I tell her before she goes or when she comes back?

Telling them before the holiday means leaving them stressing over the holiday, which isn't ideal, but ultimately you need to give them as much notice as possible.

As soon as possible. A friend did this to me and waited until 4 weeks before she moved out. I was fucking raging because I didn’t have time to sort it out and I had a holiday planned. Don’t do that to her. Give her the time to find a new flatmate or place to stay. It’s scummy to do anything else, quite frankly.

I'd tell her straight away, but I wouldn't start the clock whilst she's away, if that makes sense? So if you need to give two months notice I wouldn't start that whilst she's away, I'd tell her now and then give the two months' notice upon her return as its a bit unfair to start the clock when she can't be house hunting etc.

Before she goes would be fairer to her. Obviously I don't know what her character is like but if she gets arsey about stressing her out before her holiday she'd only switch it and say "Why didn't you tell me before I left on holiday so I didn't spend so much?" It's not a pleasant situation to be in to feel responsible also for someone else's situation but you've got to tell her some time so giving her the most possible notice is only fair I think.

You give as much notice as possible when drastically changing a situation. Before the holiday. As it'll affect what she can spend on holiday.
