Bizarre how it works, I have had a couple of times where it’s briefly come back faint so only could smell super strong things if my nose was right against it before it would go again. I’ve always assumed MS, I’ve had relapses since I was a teenager but always brushed it off since I’d mostly recover from them. I think I was about 14/15 when I started to lose my sense of smell. Wasn’t diagnosed until I was 27 when I lost feeling from the waist down and optic neuritis in my left eye that I couldn’t ignore and started my DMT a few months later.

I've had the issue for years, long before diagnosis so even longer before DMT. To me it seems like a really obvious example of myelin sheath making brain messaging erratic, because some days I can randomly smell strong things but most days, as hard as I try, I just can't smell, even with something right under my nose. But I can't actually remember talking to my neuro about it so maybe I've just assumed it is MS...

Niche, but cleaning down a wedging bench in a pottery often releases that smell. It’s the clay. If you *very* thinly smear some clay on a paving slab and leave it to totally dry (that’s the important bit), then wash it off with a wet sponge, you should get a good whiff!

A lilac tree in bloom on a warm spring day. Immediately transports me to my childhood home with the tree in the front garden. Also old fashioned sweet peas or honeysuckle flowers in summer. Freshly baked bread from the oven. Also works with cakes. Roasting coffee beans. I lived not far from the Yorkshire Tea/Taylors Coffee warehouse and when they were roasting coffee I would be in heaven. Similarly, for a while I lived in York. Driving past the Nestle factory producing KitKats was awesome. The air was just loaded with such a great smell you could taste. Your new baby after a bath, with the softest skin and hair you will ever touch. They smell perfect 💝

The intake for my spray booth has woodland behind it so I can always smell when it's raining even though the booth is a tin hut inside a building. Also all the smells of a motorsport weekend. You might like "Tonka". It's the vanilla smell that is more earthy, rather than sweet vanilla. I would go to a lush shop to smell their products and perfumes, they list the main smells so you can identify what you specifically like. That's how I learnt I'm not big into vanilla, but LOVE tonka. Also, hit up a perfume shop to sample "replica" perfumes, or order their sample pack. They have some really specific smells of real life things like "date night" which smells like rose wine and new fancy clothes, "coffee break" which is a subtle cosy coffee, biscuit and book smell, or "autumn leaves" that really does smell like autumn air without needed to wait for that time of year!

Brief story. About 3-4 years ago I lost about 80% of my sense of smell. Couldn't really pick up subtle foods or perfume and the like. Bummer. Late last year I had a heart attack and ended up having a triple bypass. Everything has gone very well. One of the crazy by-products of that experience is that my sense of smell has returned with a vengeance! It's nuts. My current favourite smells are fucking everything!

Sandalwood and Frankincense. Make sure it is Sandalwood Fragrance, as most Sandalwood Essential Oil (that is not eye wateringly expensive) is actually something called Amyris which smells the same, but can also smell like burnt wood depending on the quality. Also, there are technically a few types of Frankincense you can get. My favourite is Frankincense Serrata.

The smell of tomato plants - not necessarily the tomatoes themselves but the stems and leaves too all have the most wonderful savoury smell, it's a joy every summer

Bacon butties. Something about bacon on fresh bread with butter on. Smells heavenly! Also chocolate frosting. Spread it on a cake and put it in a tub. Then open the tub. Rich, chocolatey heaven.

I'm pregnant too but most smells repulse me now, even smells I loved before I was pregnant. Can you go into a shop and try out some of the perfumes? I miss being able to wear it, I can't stand the smell of my husband's aftershaves either which I used to love. I used to love the smell of Molton Brown bath stuff too and freshly baked bread. Get yourself down to a bakery.

I lose my sense of smell on and off (nasal polyps, yay!), and smells I always seek out when I gain my smell again are chocolate, coffee, oranges/citrus, strawberries, fried onions and fresh/toasted bread.
