Non-CG Action

I was flipping around the other day and came across Lethal Weapon. It’s a great movie but one of the things I noticed was all of the action sequences that didn’t rely on CG. They were so realistic because they were…real. I know CG enables movie makers to give the audience larger explosions, etc. and that’s great but I sometimes miss old school action. Anyone else?

I am of the general opinion that most movies made before me (6/1/73) are not very good for various reasons. I made it a goal to watch at least 1 "before me" movie a week this year. I think there's a window of great "real" action that's right in our wheelhouse, but for the most part, CG adds more than it takes away, in my opinion. Last week I watched "Ivanhoe." Most of the sword thrusts were completed off screen. As in, the stabber grabs the stabee, stabs, and the stabee falls out of view. Theres a great large battle scene, but I swear it looked like they were loading arrows in a catapult and launching them. 1952 is WAY too early for CG. It's a ridiculous example. But I'd have been able to overlook other aspects of the film I didn't like if areas like that could have been different way.

I do like the more "real" feel of older action vs. CGI, but when it was "real" it was often a lot riskier to film (the "Twilight Zone: The Movie" tragedy is a big example. If the helicopter and explosives in the scene had been CG, lives would have been spared). I've been listening to the "What Went Wrong?" movie podcast, and so many episodes mention injuries/problems that nowadays are much less likely due to the use of CGI (and of course, we tend to have more safety measures these days due to said accidents).

I watched dirty Mary crazy Larry a little while ago, and besides dying a little over the cars they destroyed in the movie. the car chases were next level.
