People of Britain: what is your memorably awful restaurant experience?

An Italian. The place was cursed for so many reasons. Massive big building. On arrival, all the staff were outside smoking. Kitchen staff, FOH, manager. All outside. They stubbed their cigarettes out and lead us inside to a building chocked full of Italian based artefacts (actually some of them were Greek.) Think, my big fat Greek wedding, but on steroids. I’m pretty sure if only could have, he would have installed a fully operational fountain in the middle of the restaurant. There was stuff everywhere. On all the tables, windowsills, the floor. You literally couldn’t see the walls for stuff. What gaps were there, were adorned with signs saying, ‘If you have a complaint, tell us. Don’t go online and leave a negative review. Any problems TALK TO THE STAFF.’ It was written just like that. The signs repeated every 5 feet. There must have been 50 of them. I ordered drinks and 30 minutes later they came. Which was baffling because we were literally the only people in there. Ordered potato skins for starters. What came out could only be described as peelings that had been fried in oil. Nothing came with them. Just a bowl of potato peelings. Ordered pizza and watched the chef ‘make’ it. The kitchen was semi open plan so you could see through a window and watch your food being made. The pizza was already made but in the fridge. It was removed and put in a pan and left. For a few minutes. Then a few minutes more. Then a few minutes more. I could see my pizza, and the pan on the stove, but the chef was nowhere to be seen. I then saw one of the waiting staff walk into the kitchen and turn the pan off. Again my pizza was still sat there, in the pan, just vibing. Chef returns and lifts the pizza up and checks underneath. It was black. He then proceeds to place it up and send it out anyway. It was every bit as horrifying as you could imagine. Throughout the meal I saw waiting staff disappear somewhere with the manager (I found out why which I’ll explain in a bit.) Another couple came in. They were similarly ignored. We actually ended up chatting with them and joined tables. I showed them my pizza and told them not to order pizza. They ordered a pasta dish which we watched be taking out of a fridge, already plated up, and put in the microwave. Oh another thing I’ve just remembered. When we got there there was one table that hadn’t been cleared. It had two half drunk glasses of red wine on it. I can only assume these people had gotten out of there pronto. Anyway, the managers clears that table just as I was walking to the toilet. On my way back I see him pouring the half empty glasses of wine back into a bottle of screwing the lid back on. At this point everybody had finished (ergo, left nearly all of their food) and the manager proceeds to clear the plates and come back with a box of chocolates that he puts on the table and walks off. This was a full size box of chocolates. We all looked at each other, puzzled. Do we eat one, do we eat them all? The box had a few chocolates missing so we assumed it was a take one and leave. We collectively decided this probably wasn’t a good idea. Now you might wonder why we didn’t complain or just walk out. The reason we didn’t is that there manager, although putting on a smile and was making attempts at being funny, had this really aggressive undertone to the way he was handling himself. He honestly gave off the vibe that, if you complained, he would slash your car tyres in the car park. So we didn’t. We paid the bill and left. A few weeks later I read in the paper that the manager had been charged by the police. Turns out he was employing 16 and 17 year old waitresses and grooming them. The reason they kept disappearing is because he was taking them to his office and raping them. Thankfully one of the girls had come forward to the police. He actually tried to say it was consensual and could prove it because he had recorded each assault using hidden cameras. It was honestly the most bizarre disturbing experience of my life.
