You can tell your own thoughts too, but I wonder what the general view of the public is, in general

I am French and we all think that a good cop is a dead one. Love from France to all of you (except cops)

Your regular police officer is nothing, compared to riot police, or MAT, as their acronym is. They are just school bullies in armor and protest stopping gear. If you know what happened in Greece last Friday, you know how and what they are. Miserable bullies, with contempt for anything that breaths.

They hate them and rightfully so. They constantly abuse their power and sometimes they are even part of mafias and criminal groups.

In Croatia most people are good lil bootlickers when it comes to any form of authority. I can't stand them though.

So... I am from Slovakia and it is part of Balkans according to German, British, etc. victorian writers.  So... We view them as incompetent, lazy and potentially corrupt. At least in Košice.

Considering the police often shakes hands with the people they are supposed to put in jail, not a good view at all,

Bosnia 🇧🇦 - The worst possible combination - living around 400 years under the Turks 🇹🇷 and being Slavic brought us some serious and negative circumstances in mentality. There is too much corruption, nepotismus, criminal both in politics and religion communities. I am sometimes speechless how bad our politicians are.

The majority of Bosnia’s political problems today come from the state that collapsed twice into brutal genocidal war twice in less than 100 years. That state is “Yugoslavia” and not the Ottoman empire.

In Turkey, most police are corrupt, powertripping bastards who look for reason to harrass people in protests or minorities. They are only there to protect politicians, and they never go and help when someone's life is on the line, and only go 30 mins after the event to ask useless questions to bystanders. And these guys can kill an innocent person in a protest but average turkish NPC will come out and say "I am with my police" every time. At least they cant use guns as freely as in USA, or we would have more police brutality deaths than any other nation

>*In Turkey, most police are corrupt, powertripping bastards who look for reason to harrass people in protests or minorities.* They used to be like that in Albania too, 15 years ago. I wonder if it’s different nowadays though…

Yeah its way different. Last week 3 police officers of high ranking were arrested for being part of an organized crime group that smuggled cocaine in Italy.

In Hungary, their main task is to fine people in traffic and sitting in cars with speed cameras to get more money for our thief politicians to steal. Their other duty is to protect the politicians and their bootlickers. They doesn't give a crap about public safety and if you have problem with gypsies, better not to call them, because they send you behind bars with hate crime. If i see one of the police cars, my first thought is not "Our nice policemen are here to maintain order.", but "Damn, i hope that they don't want to take my money for something." Oh, and they got a nice name - "Sünök" (hedgehogs), because they used a tactic against protesters some years ago, and they shouted "Sün" (hedgehog) while they circled around a protester.

Romania has basically 2 types of police systems. There's the ones that go through police academy, and they have certain more important roles and responsibilities, and those ones are more respected. Obviously, the traffic police is the most hated one. Then there's the "local police," which is basically an honorary title for some randoms that go through a few courses and they get the title and these ones don't really get any respect, as they mostly don't know the laws but like to abuse it. Having both these categories, I'd say that police get less respect also because we have a high corruption rate, which obviously gets mirrord also into the police force with cases of abuse, nepotism and general lack of knowledge when it comes to how to apply the law (if the laws are known). TL/DR: police in Romania gets low respect, but there's good reason for that.

Most people view police with a mix of contempt for them not doing their job and fear of them rightfully or wrongfully turning in on them. The general consensus is that maybe one in ten policemen are decent. Right-wingers accuse them of not doing enough, left-wingers accuse them of being systemic brutes and nothing more.
View on Reddit #50170406

LjiljaB22@reddit

Not much reason to respect them due to corruption and being mostly inept at doing much real police work
