What's the most unusual first name you've come across?

Posted by Ambitious-Win-9408@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 337 comments

I ask this as someone with a very unusual first name, usually used as a last name who has had this make things awkward my whole life.

I love unusual names, it's part of the reason I watch TV and movie credits. Cush Jumbo. Tad Williams. Cherry Chevapravatdumrong. For a while, a friend and I had a long-running WhatsApp strand about appreciating odd names we came across in our jobs. I think in terms of first names alone, Kunta was hard to beat, though the main focus was on surnames. Yallop. Skether. Rimb. Vroom.

Did they just decide it had to be English and had to be something to do with girls and that was enough? Never bothered to actually translate it? Wow, poor girl!

Yep, I’ve met a lot of Filipino people at work who selected Western names, or just random words they decided would be appropriate for names, on the advice of people over there who told them British people wouldn’t be able to pronounce their real names or would just be hostile towards them. Probably true in some cases but I was happy when people did revert to their real names; felt like Den Watts answering the phone to one woman all the time and saying “Hello, Princess.”

According to some sources, Nicholas Barbon’s original first name was the incredulously long “If-Christ-Had-Not-Died-for-Thee-Thou-Hads’t-Been-Damned”, and that he adopted the name “Nicholas” for business purposes, to avoid his name being naturally shortened to “Damned Barbon”

I used to work over in Thailand, where they have incredibly long first names. Thai's typically go by a nickname, which is also usually given by parents at birth. Two of the common ones are 'Boss', which makes me feel like I kebab shop fella when I use their name, and 'Porn' which is obviously amusing. Two less typical that I came across were 'Potter', which I couldn't help saying in a sneering Alan Rickman as Snape impersonation, and 'Shasha', which brought out my rather terrible Sean Connery

I hope you don't mind me asking, I don't mean to be rude I'm just curious. What happens if you consciously try to make the sh sound "normally" out of the front of your mouth? Can you do it but it takes a lot of effort, or is it impossible?
View on Reddit #50180873

CrossCityLine@reddit

You’re not being rude at all! I can do it but it takes some thought about mouth and tongue positioning and it sounds worse than how o say it normally. If I try to do it repeatedly I cramp up because it’s a weird position for my mouth.

Some of the African people I've met have an English name and an African name (officially from birth, not names they've chosen) the English name is sometimes an English word rather than traditional name. I was told by one person who I knew quite well that the word reflects how they feel on the birth of their child, so for eg the child is a Blessing so they name them that. So I've met an Amazing, Blessing and a Bright.

Oh this one again. I've got a memory, I'm not entirely sure it's real or not, but it's very vivid. When I was in primary school, probably aged seven or so, a new kid came to school one day and he was called Bacon. This would have been the early eighties in the north of England. The poor kid was mercilessly bullied all break time with a crowd of kids round him, I remember Gary Watson particularly gleefully shouting "Bacon where's the eggs?"  I felt really sorry for this kid and although I didn't really get to talk to him, that evening I resolved to make friends with Bacon, but he never showed up at school again. I don't remember anyone else ever mentioning Bacon, I've asked everyone I was at school with amd they don't remember Bacon, but it's not the sort of thing I'd have made up surely!?! The memory is so vivid, especially Gary Watson, fuck you Gary, your name is Gary and it's not exactly the best name going AND you were always a prick with it. Bacon, if you're out there, you're probably called John or something now, I was going to be there for you.

The 2 most unusual I've come across so far (and I think it's tied as to which is more unusual) are Concise and Comfort. I used to work at a boarding school. Most of the international pupils we had would choose an English name to go by, but we also often had kids who's parents didn't speak much English, and had just chosen an English sounding word they liked. This meant we had a LOT of very unusual names. The strangest I heard was a boy whose first name was Mister West. He had a couple of middle names and a surname, but on all registers, his first name was "Mister West". All the teachers called him "Mister West". I worked with a couple of guys from Ghana, who, like some overseas workers in the UK, had decided to give themselves English first names. Bearing in mind this was only a few years ago, I'll never quite understand why they chose Eric and Ernie.

Was talking to someone at work about this yesterday - someone they know has named Thier son "Moey-Boy". Moey pronounced like the noise a cow makes.

I know someone called Isis. Bless her, it’s actually the name of an Ancient Egyptian goddess and a really beautiful name but obviously now it’s just associated with terrorists.

I've scanned a girl named Labia, which I think was a misspelling of Laiba but unfortunately that seemed to be her legal name

One lazy, hungover Sunday watching Catfish (don’t judge, Say Yes To The Dress wasn’t on 🤣), and in separate episodes there was a Sparkayla and a Johneesha. God bless America.
