> There's no official word on what will power the Nissan Sentra, but it's possible the 149-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable automatic transmission could carry over. A hybrid variant could also be in the cards, and there are rumors of a sportier variant featuring the 201-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder found in the Rogue. I really don’t understand why Nissan won’t just put the 2.5L from the Altima in this. It’s more powerful and actually more efficient (the Altima with the 2.5L is rated at 39 MPG on the highway versus 37 MPG for the Sentra). It would be so easy for Nissan to give us a Sentra SR with the 2.5L and a 6-speed option. They already give our Canadian neighbors the Sentra with the 6-speed manual.

NEEDS__COFFEE@reddit

Because the Sentra is entry level and it’s cheaper.
View on Reddit #50030356

Own_Pass_926@reddit

It's also smaller and the 2.5 is a big engine. It won't fit in the car.
View on Reddit #50031658

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

I don’t think that would be true. The 2007 Sentra which is smaller than the current one was able to fit the QR25DD (which was also found in the previous Altima from before 2020) which is the predecessor to the PR25DD found in the current Altima. They would be pretty much identical in size between the predecessor and the current version.
View on Reddit #50032336

Own_Pass_926@reddit

Those are notorious for being difficult to work on because there's not as much room. The 1.8 was a perfect fit for servicing the car.
View on Reddit #63246026

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

That doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t share an engine. The Accord and Civic were both offered with a similar 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder (both 15B engines). Plus the Altima is going the way of the dodo by next year which means the Sentra will be the kind of catch-all sedan for the brand.
View on Reddit #50031326

NEEDS__COFFEE@reddit

The Sentra targets people who want the cheapest car possible. The vanishingly small percent of people who would buy the cheapest car on the entire market and then opt for the bigger engine isn’t worth the entering time when those people could just buy an Altima.  I didn’t know the Altima is going away though; maybe they will put it in the Sentra once that happens?
View on Reddit #50031751

Successful-Growth827@reddit

I thought their cheapest car was the Versa. Have they cancelled the Versa as well now?
View on Reddit #50032059

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

The Versa hasn't been axed yet, but it's most likely being discontinued later this year.
View on Reddit #50032450

Successful-Growth827@reddit

Interesting. Thank you. Last news I heard the only Nissan getting the axe was the Altima. I don't really keep up with Nissan though, nor do I personally know anyone who does, so I don't hear much news about them.
View on Reddit #50032579

aprtur@reddit

I'll throw a huge caveat to that - the Versa is the top selling vehicle in Mexico, so for Nissan to keep it fit the US market is basically free sales.  I'm skeptical that they'd kill it off, but it would make sense to have the Sentra take some of the Altima equipment to help differentiate it from the Versa even further.
View on Reddit #50047603

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

You're welcome. There have been 3rd party reports swirling around for a while now, but nothing from Nissan themselves. You can google "Nissan versa discontinued" and you'll see.
View on Reddit #50033162

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

I beg to differ. I know a lot of people that bought the 1.5L Civic instead of the base 2.0L Civic. I also don’t think it would take that much engineering effort either. They’ve done it before on the 2007 Sentra which also offered the 2.5L engine as an option.
View on Reddit #50032472

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

That was because the 2.0L was specifically tied to the lower trim levels (LX and Sport). So if you were gonna buy a higher trim level Civic, you were automatically gonna get the 1.5L. Also, I'd have to imagine that the buyer demographics between the Sentra and Civic are a little different. With that being said, Nissan could definitely offer the 2.5L in the Sentra.
View on Reddit #50033987

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

Right and I’m suggesting that Nissan could do the exact same thing here as Honda did with the Civic: still carry over the same 2.0L from the previous gen for the base versions and then offer the 2.5L in upper trims.
View on Reddit #50034525

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

Well, Honda no longer offers the 1.5L in the Civic. It's the 2.0L or a hybrid 2.0L now. Nissan should follow suit.
View on Reddit #50035397

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

Technically they still do. It’s offered in the Si still. And if Nissan has a hybrid version then great, but in the meantime I think like I said it wouldn’t hurt to offer the 2.5L in upper trims like the SR.
View on Reddit #50036171

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

I meant in the regular Civic. Nissan is *very* far behind most other manufactures in regard to offering hybrids. So sticking with 2 regular ICE powertrains without a hybrid offering in the new Sentra might not be the best thing for them.
View on Reddit #50036564

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

I know that’s why I said technically. And the problem I have with the Nissan of the last few years is that they tend to offer overly complicated engine options that may have questionable reliability (such as the VCT engine). That’s one of the reasons I personally would want the 2.5L because it’s about as straightforward as it comes to an engine: naturally aspirated, 4 cylinder, based on an engine design that’s already been around for over two decades. All it needs is to be paired to a 6-speed in my opinion. If they offer a hybrid, it’ll be most likely be a turbo 3 cylinder hybrid. I just personally don’t trust 3-cylinder engines for any kind of long term reliability.
View on Reddit #50037051

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit

Yeah, agreed. Like you said, Nissan hasn't made the best engineering choices...at least with their commodity vehicles. But I have absolutely no stake in the game with Nissan. There's not a single product they make that interests me.

Eh new Armada is kind of cool. Just wouldn’t pay the price they want for it.
View on Reddit #50038153

HuskyPurpleDinosaur@reddit

Easy: 1) Manual transmissions have a very low take rate 2) Ever increasing emissions regulations make manual transmissions problematic, particularly between shifts. Fixing this with a lot of rev hang can help, but annoys customers. 3) CVTs tend to offer fuel economy improvements over manuals, and these vehicles tend to focus on improving fleet fuel economy to sell more profitable vehicles. 4) The 1.5T is rumored to be used in a top trim of the new Sentra, which offers quite a high improvement in emissions (particularly idle) over the 2.5L, while providing higher peak power, significantly higher midrange torque, and higher fuel economy. 5) The 2.0 has lower emissions and is cheaper to manufacture. Its also not less fuel economic apples to apples, as has 2mpg higher combined fuel economy: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=48500&id=48186

>Nissan won’t just put the 2.5L Lol you mean the SER/SpecV. Both the B15 and B16 had the QR25 in them. The B17 killed the fun.
View on Reddit #50068147

AtomWorker@reddit

The point of carrying over the old engine is to keep the MSRP down, maintain low maintenance costs and maximize reliability. I doubt the 2.5L even fits in the Sentra, but if it did a large displacement engine doesn't make sense for a global, compact platform. Apart from the weight penalty, regulations would make it a no go in much of the world. A small displacement, turbo-hybrid makes more sense but then again, Nissan has far more important stuff to worry about than wasting money and resources on performance variants.
View on Reddit #50032536

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

I believe there would be more of a weight penalty going with the turbo 3 cylinder than going with the 2.5L engine. The Rogue when it switched from the 2.5L to the turbo 3-cylinder gained almost 100 lbs in weight. And the Sentra from 2007-2012 had the 2.5L as an option which was smaller than the current one, so I believe it would fit.
View on Reddit #50033214

Trollygag@reddit

>The Rogue when it switched from the 2.5L to the turbo 3-cylinder gained almost 100 lbs in weight. Engineering articles say the opposite. Switching to the 3 cylinder turbo shed almost 20 lbs. If you saw a weight gain, it was due to something else in the options list or how they were calculating weight.
View on Reddit #50038401

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

Ok do you have a source then for the engineering articles you’re looking at?
View on Reddit #50061357

varezhka11@reddit

Probably because they still want to release the 1.5L VC as the premium option, which no one will buy if the 2.5L is the standard. And the 2L NA base engine and 1.5/1.6L turbo sports model matches what Elantra and K4, Nissan's closest competitors, are doing.
View on Reddit #50045278

GoHuskies1984@reddit

The Sentra saw fuel economy improvements with the last refresh. Non SR models are now rated 40 hwy and the SR 39 hwy.
View on Reddit #50032939

DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)

Ah I must’ve gotten the older numbers then. But still, I think in a smaller vehicle like the Sentra they could possibly get it to also hit that 40 MPG target if in the larger Altima they are able to hit 39.

Funny. Around here, if you see a newer Altima, it is AWD 9 times out of 10. Do you live somewhere with little to no snowfall? We also see lots of AWD Camry’s, and I’ve already seen a few AWD Sonatas. We average 100” of snow every winter, which isn’t that high, but on the higher end of the spectrum.

My bias kinda agreed a little in the sense typically going the Altima route you're looking for the cheapest car in class so maybe upgrades like AWD don't sell well . But 1 in 70 sounds insane unless it's like largely counting rental car company sales.
View on Reddit #50102212

I_like_cake_7@reddit

That kind of makes sense, actually. I’m guessing that most Altima buyers are extremely price sensitive and either can’t or won’t pay extra for an AWD Altima.
View on Reddit #50040675

Nissan has become a budget brand and their buyers are budget buyers. This is the Ghoson legacy. And yes, they aren’t paying the extra for AWD. In the US, the AWD shoppers aren’t shopping the sedan, they are shopping Compact SUVs

View on Reddit #50069576

It's just no cheap enough yet. They tried to make a cheap EV with the very first Leaf and all anyone did was complain about the range. The battery to propel a sentra sized vehicle to 300+ miles costs over half as much as an entire ICE sentra to produce today. EV's that are not being heavily subsudized by governments and 3rd world labor are still too expensive to be considered entry level. That will only be ICE cars for the foreseeable future.

>This Sentra is larger than Gen 1-3 Nissan Altimas. How could you possibly know the dimensions of this prototype? BTW, the first 2 generations of the Altima were a compact car, not midsize. And while the current Sentra is wider than the first 3 gens of the Altima, it's only longer than the 1st gen. The 2026 Sentra would have to grow about 10" in length in order to be longer than the 3rd gen Altima. I just don't see that happening.
