Top selling cars in the World

Interesting š§ car sales around the world. I find this interesting in both sides. Some will say itās bad, some will say good. What say you?
Tidybloke@reddit
It's not good or bad, it is what it is. Surprised Tesla is so high, I don't see a lot of them here.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
People forget the model y is still the single best selling model in china, and that is an absolutely massive market that most automakers struggle in vs. chinese EV competition
mittypyon@reddit
No. Tesla is.
shitheadsteven3@reddit
Well, yeah, they're splitting sales between two models that came second and third. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Corolla top next year, considering chinese buyers are moving more towards homegrown companies.
defund_aipac_7@reddit
Your comment Makes no sense. Toyota is splitting sales between a Corolla and RAV4?
shitheadsteven3@reddit
Yeah, more or less. If Toyota canceled the Corolla tomorrow, a huge chunk of the people who bought one last year would either buy a Camry or Rav4. Toyota buyers are very loyal the lions' share of them would just move elsewhere within the brand if one or the other didn't exist.
stinger_02in@reddit
Buy with what? Magic money to pay for the higher price?
trackdaybruh@reddit
It's also the best selling car in California, outsold the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry
BelowMikeHawk@reddit
Its also the best selling car worldwide!
e136@reddit
That's where I live!

I forget who, but this comment reminded me there's a comedian who, anytime a movie has an outer space shot of the earth, goes to imdb and adds himself to the cast of the movie as "Uncredited extra".

PurpleSausage77@reddit
What? For it to be 2nd place? Still a metric shit ton.
Dexter942@reddit
It won't be for long when Tesla's get banned in China
GrynaiTaip@reddit
A lot of people are unhappy with Musk's politics.

No one wants these swastikars. People are protesting here in US at tesla dealerships. Plus with the dumpster fire that is the cyber truck, Tesla might not be around a few years.

Shmokesshweed@reddit
Eh. I don't think it's going to destroy the company.
It's a dumpster fire of a design, but I'm hopefully they make something more traditional with the same tech.
noodlecrap@reddit
of course: toyota is a well established maker than makes anything from off-road machines, to lightweight sports cars passing through work trucks and passenger cars. they have everything from gas to diesel, hybrid and not, they have a history of reliability and toughness and have created some of the most iconic 4wheeled vehicles in the world.
tanbirj@reddit
Iām not sure the Chinese care as much that Elon is a total bell end
c74@reddit
a lot of reddit users hate him while the x users love him. a long long way from universal hate. a vast majority of people dont give a toss who owns a company of whatever product they use/buy. dont think it would be wise to short him.
more importantly than the chinese buying tesla's is i want to know where is the roadster that supposedly has a 0-60 time of less than 1 second. let me guess - next year.
xt1nct@reddit
How do you explain a 25% stock drop in a month and sales dropping 50% in some EU countries?
hi_im_bored13@reddit
For the eu sale, they are retooling plants to build the refreshed model y
c74@reddit
stock is up ~1250% in the last 5 years. was as high as 1900% back in dec 24. saying tesla's stock performance is poor is not a hill to die on.
market cap:
tesla: 918B ford: 38B vw: 57B gm: 49B toyota: 233B ferrari: 122B
tesla is massively overvalued. people are investing in it more like a speculative tech stock than a car stock. a lot of people are still betting heavy on elon... i guess they buy into robots, ai and autotaxis? but yeah, tesla is probably worth more than all of the other car companies combined - this is a guess as i dont have time to look up every company... but the point remains.
rexchampman@reddit
Tesla is being outsold in china and their market share has been steadily declining.
Much better options for cheaper in china. Tesla will not be gaining market share there. Just the opposite.

edvurdsd@reddit
Southern California here. They are everywhere.
R_V_Z@reddit
Whole west coast, really. I'm in Seattle and see Rivians daily as well. Lucids are more about once a week (Taycans too, if I didn't see one in the work parking lot every day).

I see them all over. I'm convinced model Y drivers are this decade's shitty BMW driver.
kmj442@reddit
Excuse me, last decade was Audi, gotta go back 2 decades for bmw.
Fair_Sweet8014@reddit
Might be more region specific. Audi drivers aren't that bad around here. I'm glad we both agree that a lot Y drivers suck ass though.
NWbySW@reddit
As an autist living in the Washington State. I drove 8 miles from my doctors appointment on Friday and counted how many Teslas I saw. Given the limited natured of what I could see given physical barriers and actually having to drive, I saw 59. 3 of which were Cybertrucks, one of which was pink....

VanillaLifestyle@reddit
And not a front plate in sight
withsexyresults@reddit
Good. Front plates dont look good and avoids drilling bumper
MajesticBread9147@reddit
Every country in the world requires front plates except for parts of USA and Canada, PanamĆ”, the Dominican Republic, Micronesia, Palau and the Marshall Islands.
The pros of easier identification outweigh the cons. And the front bumper is often left in hit-and-run accidents.
withsexyresults@reddit
Required in my state too but you can just go without. Just gotta pay if fined
Gatortribe@reddit
Wow really? Because you never think of those other 5 as having their shit together.

That basically did happen lol. The British military took control after WWII and set up their own leadership. They turned it over to the West German government and it remained that way through the East/West divide, with regulations for how many vehicles East Germany could receive. At one point they even offered to give the company to Ford for free.

WitBeer@reddit
Their image has always been higher than their price tags. Now that's changing, and people definitely care about their own image (that many seem to adopt from the car they drive).
turnt-tit@reddit
Apparently tesla sales in the US actually dropped from 2023 to 2024 by a small amount. This was before the political bs. In several European countries tesla sales have dropped ~60%. While many don't care, many do. You also can't forget about the swasticar comments and vandalizm which will likely deter people from buying or even encourage them to sell.
Then if you include the cyber truck, tesla sales are going down. The only question is by how much.
Elderbrute@reddit
One thing people absolutely do care about when buying cars and certainly "premium" brands is image. And right now the image of tesla is one a lot of people do not wish to be associated with.
Maybe they will continue to do well in the USA and depending on how the trade war ends up going with China will depend on how much musk pisses them off. Europe was already turning before and will accelerate probably now.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
they hate him for he spoke the truth
michaeldeng18@reddit
You're getting downvoted, but I agree that this year doesn't look promising for Tesla sales, especially if the EV tax credit gets cut.
SPorterBridges@reddit
People keep saying this based on clickbait highlighting a single month's worth of sales. But they seem blissfully unaware that Tesla's sales are notoriously spiky on a month-to-month basis, usually peaking in the 3rd month of any given quarter. That plus the Model Y refresh this year.
The picture may not be clear for at least a few months from now.
rspndngtthlstbrnddsr@reddit
also made easier by the fact tesla sells less different types of cars than anyone else. sales accumulate on single models while they spread across different models for other manufacturers, which is why for example VW is only on there with 1 model despite selling much more cars than tesla
mbmbmb01@reddit
Where are you?
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Looks like he from one of south hemisphere. Tesla still doesnāt sell their cars in South America, Africa, and India.
kawmacke@reddit
FYI, India is not in the southern hemisphere. Only about 1/3rd of the Africa and about 4/5 of South America is under the equator. And this by land area. By population, the southern hemisphere contains less than 15% of humans. It's a sizeable, but largely irrelevant market under current conditions.
frog-hopper@reddit
Pretty much every other car is a Tesla 3 or Y where I am.
Mammoth_Cranberry815@reddit
You see a lot of them on the west coast, not so much in the midwest because the winters. Someone already mentioned it but they sell a ton in china.
dirty_harry@reddit
I'm about 30 minutes outside of Boston, MA and I see countless model 3s and Ys. Also they're very noticeable at night since most of their headlights are misaligned.
MattDaaaaaaaaamon@reddit
I'm not surprised in the least. I worked for a company making Model Y parts, and it was impossible to keep up with the volume.
joshbro4@reddit
Iāve noticed that Tesla owners are also WAY more into buying random 3rd party add ons for their cars than nearly any other brand
throwaway94890349043@reddit

Mimical@reddit

yhsong1116@reddit
i hope you guys get more orders this year.
alastoris@reddit
If I recall, Tesla was still posting sales growth. But recent report has its sales in Europe has dropped 43%, would be interesting to see if model y can retain its #1 spot. Also it's my opinion that the new one is ugly at.
Likely it or not, Tesla is still the benchmark to beat when comparing EVs.
But really curious if it can maintain it's crown for 2025 onwards.
iatekane@reddit
Seems to be really area dependent. I live in Vancouver BC and there are huge amounts of teslas everywhere, sometimes at a stoplight nearly every car ends up being a Tesla
Snoo93079@reddit

Whats the source for this data?
Simon676@reddit
Statista is a very reliable source by itself. Their only purpose is literally to do statistics for research and government organizations.
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit
So statista performs its own surveys and collects it's own data? Cool, can you show me where it determined the top selling cars in Azerbaijan or Namibia or Nicaragua?
Simon676@reddit
They aggregate and verify date from other sources. They literally make their living by the accuracy of their data, as companies and governments use it to make billion-dollar decisions, and as such have a very high expectation on them that the data they release to be correct. For them to release data that is not accurate would be extremely noteworthy.
As you will find with any research of the world, it is very hard to find data on markets such as those, and you will almost always find countries excluded for those reasons. When it comes to sales of new cars these countries would likely not make up very large numbers anyways as they rely almost entirely of imports of older cars from other countries.
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit
Ok so can you please show me where I can find those sources since they're pay walled. I didn't see any of these disclaimers in the presented data so why would one make those assumptions? Basically you're now saying the data is incomplete and flawed but users have no way if knowing based on how it's presented. How donwe know toyota sells so many camrys if we don't have complete or accurate data. Even worse when people present the data like it is and get mad when questioned
Simon676@reddit
That was why my comment was that Statista is a reliable source by itself. It is one of very few places on earth where I will take the data at face-value, because of their very long track record of providing very accurate and unbiased data.
Intended users are governments, research organizations and large companies, who are more than willing to pay for full access to this information.
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit
How are they a reliable source when you know nothing about the information or how it's collected. You even stated they have various flaws that weren't disclosed and rhe data isn't freely available for anyone else to analyze. Just because you choose to blindly trust things without verification gives no credence to the actual quality of the data. Lol. Likenyour opinion means nothing. Factually this entire data set is inaccurate to the point that no reasonable conclusion can be made. What data anywhere says the Toyota corolla or tesla model y is the top selling new car. How many ladas or Toyota 3rd world models are out there that weren't included?
FreeWinter15@reddit
Dude is on a frantic fact checking, fallacy grasping rampage just because Tesla made a good selling car. Get over it. Nightmares that Toyota got credit for 1,080,000 sales instead of 1,090,000 because they forgot to count a handful of sales on North Sentinel Island.
falafeler@reddit
https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/987/227/1f3.png
Simon676@reddit
I just know the standards they set for their data, and how good their sources typically are. I wouldn't expect anything less than world-class data from them, the reason they can put it behind a paywall in the first place. The same way a certification from a credited body can make someone trust something, even though they haven't verified it is actually true.
I appreciate your healthy skepticism, and you are fully entitled to make your own decisions from the information you have available in front of you.
odetothefireman@reddit (OP)
Thatās the problem with you all. So lazy you canāt even click a link
CondeNast_yReddit@reddit

NoFrame99@reddit
If you've ever driven a Model Y it's not a surprise. Incredibly compelling package for the price.
BTW it was the best selling car in 2023 as well.
lovely_sombrero@reddit
I just find it incredible how badly made it is. Not just the panel gaps, the inside of the TMY looks like a $15k car. The same goes for road noise and ride comfort. Until now, Tesla was just cruising on their brand image, people believe they are somehow "saving the world" by buying a personal car!? We will see how Tesla does when that brand reputation is damaged.
longboringstory@reddit
Tell us how you've never driven a Tesla without telling us.
Live-Habit-6115@reddit
His experience is accurate. The Model S is alright (I haven't driven the X so can't speak to that), but the 3 and Y are very low quality. Terrible NVH and ride quality.Ā
I'd say the argument that they're cheap so it's understandable is a fair one. But anyone that claims these are quality cars is either a Musk fan boy or has never driven anything actually decent.Ā
NoFrame99@reddit
New 3 and Y are much different. Go test drive them.Ā
longboringstory@reddit
I literally went from an Audi S5 to a Model 3 in 2019, and just bought a new Highland Model 3 a month ago. I'm quite familiar with the quality between German autos and Tesla, which is why I still don't buy that either of you have ever owned a Tesla.
Chi-Guy86@reddit
Iāve driven one and completely with him.
NoFrame99@reddit
Were you frothing at the mouth when you wrote this?
clickstops@reddit
You can get a model Y for under $40k after incentives. My family got a 3 for $26k AFTER TAX after incentives. It was cheaper than my $22k MSRP Maverick Hybrid, and costs even less to own (and the Mav is cheap!)
Thatās extremely important context when talking about build quality. The Tesla is not great but itās worlds better than other domestic products of the same price point.
garytyrrell@reddit
I think thatās kind of the point the person was making. They used to be considered premium cars, but theyāre actually just the cheapest option now.
clickstops@reddit
This is still an overstatement. He said it looks like a $15k car. It doesnāt look like a Mitsubishi Mirage. It is still better than an escape or Prius or Acadia. Iāve driven all of them extensively. It isnāt Macan levels though, of course.
garytyrrell@reddit
Yeah, the Mirage comes with CarPlay :)
clickstops@reddit

I just rented a 2022 MY from Hert and it definitely felt cheaper than my 2023 M3. My wife and I both felt that, but it was hard to explain what specifically felt different.
ToInfinity_MinusOne@reddit
I had a friend that had a Model Y and the whole thing felt cheap. Going over speed bumps it felt like the suspension was made from something out of a kids toy. The most flimsy and cheap feeling vehicle I've ever been in.

Joooooooosh@reddit
Itās still wild to me the F series is always Ā by up there, despite only being sold in the Americas.Ā
MajesticBread9147@reddit
Also while not uncommon they don't seem to be nearly as common to deserve such a spot.
Like, people who drive trucks are mostly tradesmen and stuff and some outdoorsmen who don't want a Subaru.
They get worse gas mileage than even SUVs, they're harder to park and find parking for than anything else. If you drive in cities they take up a huge amount of room in residential streets that were built before cars which slows you down trying to not scrape parked cars. The standard use of a car as something to go to work in or drag the kids around in doesn't fit them either that don't really justify the cost.
It seems like the opposite of utility all around unless you regularly need to move a furniture or collect scrap metal or whatever.
ScaredGrapefruit9027@reddit
People who drive trucks are everyone.
The gas mileage isn't that of a compact SUV. No. It's insanely better than trucks 10-20 years ago though, and more in line with full-size SUV.
Parking is harder, but it's not that bad... unless you suck at parking. The majority of truck owners don't live downtown, or work downtown. They commute in areas with easy parking for their trucks. Suburbs to industrial park.
Again, the cost compared to what? A corolla? X3? X5? Tahoe? Maverick?.
I see a lot of premium SUV's rolling around that could just be base model eco brands.
Joooooooosh@reddit
Maybe depends on location maybeā¦
I visited Colorado recently and F series trucks were everywhere. Mainly F150 and F250ās.Ā
I rented an F150 and while it was big, it was very easy to use and easy to park, even in the city. The roads were built for stuff that size, unlike Europe, where it would be unusable.Ā
The 3.5 Ecoboost V6 also wasnāt terrible on fuel, averaged around 25mpg (uk) being driven⦠like a rental, with all terrain tyres on. Not bad for a massive brick.Ā
Truck prices compared to equivalent SUVās do still seem to be less, so can see why they are popular but the lack of a trunk/boot is a downside.Ā
I get it though, living in a massive 4x4 truck, just felt right. The roads there were also TERRIBLE, so something larger did help.Ā
KingofCraigland@reddit
Alternatively, a friend with a pick-up truck is a huge upside when you need to move anything too large to fit inside a vehicle. Or anything that you might not want inside your vehicle.
N0Name117@reddit
Used to drive a sedan with a trunk and do not miss it in the slightest. The bed (even a short bed) is so much more useful.
Moynia@reddit
I think /r/Cars (and Reddit in general) tends be from bigger population centers. The high sales of domestic American stuff like trucks makes a lot more sense once you get further from the coasts and bigger cities. You get out to areas in the mid-west and the supply chain just breaks down quickly if you own something not American. Even the most rural areas you can still easily find a Ford/Chevy dealer or a part shop that will have what you need same day.

cuddlepwince@reddit
Why not? I'm buying a new model S when they refresh it

How are pickups so high on the list? Makes sense in North America. I really donāt see many pickups at all in other countries. Europe uses vans primarily.. they even have dually vans for towing/hauling heavy loads
banelingsbanelings@reddit
Iiirc Germany is #3 or #4 in new vehicles sold and had like 1/4 of USA. So yes. If a singular vehicle is sold extremely well in USA it has a good chance to be a (global) powerhouse.
Thatswhy it's not suprising to see the Model Y on #1. because unlike Toyota it finds traction in EU markets(and apparently China). Thatswhy Chevy and Dodge can still exist despite never selling anything outside USA and their car's not being even Emissions legal outside the 47 states(or w/e the number was).
N0Name117@reddit
America (including US neighbors like Mexico and Canada) buy a lot of trucks every year.
boognishbeliever@reddit
I would like to see the numbers if they combined the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra sales.
jfmdavisburg@reddit
323K Sierra sales in 2024
boognishbeliever@reddit
Thank you. Add that to the Silverado and it moves above the F series.
N0Name117@reddit
That's the case most years but it really doesn't matter to GM. Splitting the sales let's them charge more for GMC vehicles so they can rake in more profit.
odetothefireman@reddit (OP)
Itās world so why include?
AudiB9S4@reddit
Last I checked, they are both sold in the world (and theyāre essentially the same vehicle with different badges).

For reference, I got banned from r/funny for the same post and yet proof. https://www.statista.com/statistics/239229/most-sold-car-models-worldwide/

Toyota's are great, the interiors are still functional and they won't let you down. Plus full hybrid is by far the easiest fuelling method to live with.
jaaagman@reddit
I suspect this number will start to decrease for 2025, as EV subsidies are drying up in most western countries, and economies are tanking. Considering the Model Y is probably twice as expensive as a Civic, those sales numbers are quite impressive.
Workaroundtheclock@reddit
Toyota has been on this list for decades.
Will Tesla? I seriously doubt it, doubt it will be on this list by year end even.
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
I see this prediction on Reddit every year and it has yet to happen, lol

They had one bad month, it could be a trend, but it's too early to tell. These articles get posted her all the time about a bad month and the comments always predict the same thing, and it never happens
Workaroundtheclock@reddit
lol, cope.
Oneupping@reddit
Covered Musk but not the fact that there's a brand new model coming and people may be waiting it outĀ

It says ābest selling cars in 2024ā and then the description says:
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car model in 2024, topping 1.09 million sales. It was followed closely by the Toyota Corolla. Overall global car sales grew to roughly 75.3 million units in 2023, and are estimated to have reached over 77 million in 2024.
Maybe this is 2023 data?
Smart_History4444@reddit
I hate that Tesla is #1. The cars themselves are good and I understand why people buy them. Except the cybertruck. That thing is purely just a status symbol lol. I just donāt like who is running the company. He is an insecure rich prick.

You think your going to get downvoted for hating Elon on reddit especially now....
Every other post on the popular subreddits is about how much people hate him with hundreds and thousands of upvotes...
Smart_History4444@reddit
Well I am lol. Idk if those are just ppl who decide not to believe the truth.
Juicyjackson@reddit
Your being downvoted because your talking about politics in a car subreddit.
We come here because we want to talk about cars, not politics.
Elon is a dick, but that doesn't change the fact that the Model Y is one of the most popular cars in the world, or how much value it offers compared to everything else in its class.
arcticrobot@reddit
ah good old reddit.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
I'm not a huge fan of Tesla's product, but I also care as much about Elon Musk's politics as I do Jim Farley's, Mary Barra's or Akio Toyoda's.
ivycomb@reddit
My dream daily driver is a Plaid. I was 'lucky' to get one not too long ago (before this whole fiasco)
I absolutely despise musk. I hated him before, I hate him more now. Owning a Tesla when he's in charge is embarrassing.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
In the last few years, sales charts have been influenced as much by product availability as it is popularity.
As an example, the RAV4 Hybrid is still difficult to get in Australia, with a decent waiting list. There's almost certainly people who want them who can't get them.
anynonmous-User33@reddit
Wow that is definitely interesting. Not entirely sure what I was expecting but itās definitely something !! Iām not entirely sure if I think itās good or bad. Everyone has their own car preferences
