“Gifted and Talented” in schools in the 80s: were *all* of us eventually diagnosed ADHD? Or only *very many* of us?

I got Ds in first grade (mid 80s). I remember having to go see a doctor for two weeks that next summer. They gave me a battery of tests. Nobody told me why, I just had to go. I thought the tests were dumb and refused to do them. There was an Apple IIe in the corner and it had a game on it. I wanted to play that thing so badly. Eventually, a deal was struck where I got to play on the computer with whatever time I had left if I got that day's tests done. They set me up and make sure the most I had was like 15 mins but I started flying through those things. My mission every day was to get done as fast as possible to play that game. I still remember it but I never caught the game name. I was never told the results of those tests nor why I was there. It was like it never happened. Years later, when I turned 18 my mother handed me some paperwork. It was the results of those tests and she explained to me that when I did so poorly in first grade they thought I was the R word. Not sure if using that word will get me banned/flagged. Turns out I had an extremely high IQ and I just had ADD (now ADHD) really bad. My mother thought it best to hide that fact from me and everyone else. Knowing her own issues, she probably found it embarrassing. I was so angry when she told me this. I struggled in school all those years when I could have gotten some help. I *knew* something was wrong but I never could figure out what until high school when I had a classmate describe her problems and it sounded so much like what I always dealt with. She had been diagnosed and was on prescription medication. I would love to get medicated as an adult and I self medicate with caffeine when I really need to focus. It is so hard to get help now. Finding a therapist who will take your insurance and has room for you and who is willing to prescribe the needed drugs is very, very difficult. To add to that the artificial drug shortage, its maddening. So, I will just continue to struggle as I always have.
