Do you see the UK as the parent of the USA?

I've noticed a lot of Brits see the UK as the USA's parent. I've spoken with Americans about it, some of them see the foundations of the country as rooting from Britian, and some of them totally reject the idea that Britian has anything to do with them.
I'm wondering what the British consensus is?
